Papillon in Liverpool

Nice atmosphere (although music choice might need a rethink). Service was really good. Unfortunately was one of the worst Thai curries I've ever had.

Terrible experience. Dec 22nd, I had booked a pre- show meal at 6pm for our family. This table was booked during an unplanned visit to Papillon with my wife in early November, at which time the Maitre D, (I think his name was Jack) assured us that the table we chose was ours for the December visit. On the evening of December 22nd we arrived 10 minutes early to be greeted by a different Maitre D named Connor, and found that another family were having a meal at the table we had booked 8 weeks earlier. When I explained this to the Maitre D he said ‘oh sorry’, and took us to another table with no other excuse or explanation offered as to why our original table booking was not honored. Shortly after, I approached the Maitre D whilst on my way to the Gents, because I didn’t think he understood or appreciated why we were not happy with the situation. I calmly explained to him that we had took time to book the other table with his colleague in November, to which he said ‘oh sorry’ again, with the added dismissive comment ‘well everyone books their tables in November’. I replied’ well I don’t think you are sorry’ and walked off to the Gents. I would like to make it clear that during that brief conversation I did NOT at any point raise my voice, use foul language , or intimidate the Maitre D. I was simply an unhappy customer, wanting to know why the table we had booked was allocated to another group of people. On my way back to our alternative table, the Maitre D then approached me and said that he was so sorry that I was unhappy but ‘ if you are going to speak to staff like that, maybe we should cancel your order and recommend somewhere else for you to eat’. I declined his suggestion, but he repeated it knowing full well that I had explained to him earlier that we were attending a show and were time constricted. I once again declined the offer he was obviously trying to pressure upon us, and said we would stay. I thought this summed the whole evening up at Papillon. Our booked table given away, a dismissive attitude to my complaint, and the cowardly behavior of the Maitre D, towards a family that was already unhappy with the Maitre D treatment of them, but dared to raise the issue. After we had left, I explained to my wife, who was unaware of the conversation I had with the Maitre D, and the disgusting offer for us to leave, and we both agreed not one more penny of our money will be spent there. Of course, we will also be sharing the story of our experience with family, friends and colleagues to prevent them from experiencing any similar treatment and disappointment. So my message to other diner’s is, if you just want to be a ‘walk in’ for a quick bite, this is suitable, but quite over priced. If on the other hand you are planning a special meal with family , such as to kick off the start of Christmas celebrations, and expecting a little respect and decency from the staff, then this venue is not for you and should be avoided. I did explain to the Maitre D during our conversation that I would be leaving a review, and here it is. I wonder if the management team or the owner will be equally dismissive of this. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were upon now reading some of the previous 1 to 2 star reviews for this establishment, and attributing to staff attitude towards customers. The Nicholson family.

Worst Christmas dinner ever, stale hard roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. Gravy like value tasteless , the chef needs sacking. Dry tasteless no stuffing or bacon on the turkey. Waste of £70 should have gone the chippy.

Terribly disappointed at such a nice venue. Great staff. Friendly enough even the FC one. The Manager did all he could to appease the situation which went downhill fast after such nice starters which were Olives Bread and oils and absolutely delicious Chorizo. Mmmmm Chorizo. Two Turkey Roasts and One Beef was ordered along with One Vegan Pie dinner. They arrived and the it looked fine. That’s were it ended though. The cutlery we were given was not up to the job. Something from Black and Decker would have been more suitable. All 4 dishes were sent back and replacements came. This time the chef was entering the stage of ‘ I just want to get home and play with my miniature fire engine set. The 4 replacements came and were equally as bad. Some were cooked and some were as hard as nails. One dinner had no gravy on it at all. The other three had had an abundance of it. That is unforgiveable. You have yes. You can see. Anyway all 4 were sent back and that was that. Two pizzas arrived later and well the least said about them the better. But apart from that excellent. Dessert time was well we will call them this but they are not. We tried but what was served up was nothing like what the menu said it was. So to summarize. Great staff and venue who have been sorely let down by Chefs with cooking disabilities.

Como nota positiva, el personal fue atento y ajustó nuestra factura para reflejar nuestras preocupaciones. También parecen estar asistiendo a otros grupos que experimentan problemas similares. Insto a los propietarios a considerar estas observaciones. Tienes un lugar maravilloso en una gran ubicación. Proporcionar alimentos de buena calidad a un precio justo no es difícil. Es mejoraría la experiencia tanto para sus clientes de pago como para su personal trabajador.

Lovely atmosphere with a small band playing lovely music. Food was good. I had the red Thai curry which was delicious. My wife had the salmon and loved that too. The staff were attentive and efficient. The Pinot Noir was very good. Would definitely go back

What a nice place . Well situated near the Philharmonic hall and the cathedrals . The food was excellent and served by efficient waiting staff . We would visit again

Giving this a 5 purely on the service from Mia. Really nice person efficient at he job We walked out of the quater next door. The one painted green .....how are they so busy when the menu wasn't upto much, old looking basic furniture, not comfy and a n abrupt manager or sever ( slim built little nark . He needs to relax) anyway go to Papillon, it's warmer, cosier and a better atmosphere too. Food also good.....

As a non-alcoholic drinker I seen this place and I came in. The atmosphere was amazing absolutely gorgeous and her and I walked up to the bar and I got served by this amazing bartender called Chloe lovely young girl highly recommend getting served by her. I asked her for a drink that she would highly recommend for a non-alcoholic drinker and she said leave it with me. I will get that done and she came back with this beautiful mock tail. It was absolutely sensational.

Absolutely abysmal poor quality Sunday Lunch, the beef was as tough as old leather boots! Potatoes soggy & non existent overcooked veg. I really don't mind paying these prices but I do expect good or even reasonable quality food. The service was attentive & good. I will obviously not be returning.

Had a couple of afternoon drinks sitting outside enjoying the sunshine. Also does good but we were just chilling. They also do Sunday roasts.

On a lovely bright and sunny Sunday afternoon we very much enjoyed a relaxing lunch sat outside watching the World go by. The food was extremely tasty and the service was prompt, professional and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. To top it all, we had 4 excellent main courses, 2 pints of Guinness, 2 halves of cider and a bottle of very nice Pinot Grigio for a very reasonable £102! Bargain!!

Great breakfast to a great sunday morning soundtrack. Music just right. You could hear it without it being intrusive. Breakfast was delicious with good sourdough toast. Staff helpful and attentive.

Just to say how much we enjoyed our lunch at Papillon. Weather was atrocious during our short trip to Liverpool so we decided do both cathedrals and my daughter picked Papillon from a short list provided by our Liverpool resident friends. How lucky we were! Very warm welcome and delicious, sensibly priced food. The linguine was well balanced and the vegetarian curry just spicy enough for me. Our lovely waitress, whose name we sadly missed, was so helpful, chatty and professional, we promised to return! The restaurant filled up with a mix of family and friendship groups although I can well imagine it's rather more hectic in the evenings. For us, it was a really congenial lunch which set us up for our damp cathedrals excursion! Thanks to the team at Papillon? We will be recommending you!

We popped in for a couple of drinks and a snack in-between visiting both Cathedrals. We couldn't fault it, staff were lovely, nibbles and drinks were great. Beautiful place to visit, next time we are back in Liverpool we'll definitely pop in.

Making the booking was fine the interaction was nicely done however me and my partner were running late and for life of us we couldn’t find a single contact number for the venue and number we did find was not recognised luckily enough we had another member of family going to keep the table so we didn’t loose it and we didn’t get charged for not showing up. As we were sat there we waited for a waiter, and 15/20mins had passed before my partner had to get up and ask for a waiter to come take our order and the waitress who took our order was so lovely and we didn’t wait long for food the food was a 10/10 and portion size was just perfect for all of us! Well done to all the chefs truly amazing!! Then in the next breath once we’d eaten and palates were cleared we sat finished our wine and waited a bit but not one single waiter or waitress came past us and again my partner had to get up to ask for the bill the service was the only thing that let papillon down everything else from the wine to the food was truly amazing. I’m sure this most probably down to lack of staff which is an ongoing situation within hospitality but the main thing to do in that situation is to place staff in sections to make sure all guests are attended to correctly, nothing is missed and service is top quality from start to finish.

Have to say was very disappointed with the food and service. The service was very slow, waited half hour for drinks. My starter was a lamb dish and was a very strange combination of flavours. My main was the burger which was okay but nothing to shout about. Very underwhelming.

We visited for a family meal. The food was fabulous. We had a selection of the nibbles to start. Followed by fish and chips, Greek chicken salad and sweet potato chick pea curry. All were delicious. Service was great and the staff really friendly and attentive. Only niggle - lighting was turned down too much for eating food but was turned back up on request and the pork scratchings were disappointing for £4.50! We will definitely return though.

You must go here and try the fish and chips, best I’ve ever had. Portion size is huge so go hungry and enjoy! Worth every penny.

Great spot mfor a pre-show dinner id you are visiting the Philharmonic hall ... but you will need to book. Des[pite being very busy ... the staff looked after us extremely well. Food was served promptly and it is freshly prepared and quite delicious. We tried the hummus and the chorizo bites for starters - ...both wonderful. we played quite safe with teh mains ... a burger (cooked just right) and the fish and chips with excellent proper chips and mushy peas. All washed down with a bottle of white rioja. Great stuff!!

Whilst staying in the Hope Street Hotel we decided to go for an evening meal at Papillon which is literally across the road from the hotel. Papillon catered for the needs of us by ensuring that items on the menu which contained Sesame were highlighted so that these could be avoided, in fact my starter which would normally be cooked in Sesame Oil wasn’t ! The menu contains dishes suitable for all tastes including vegetarians and vegans. If you are not keen on spicy food, we’d suggest that you avoid the Chickpea and Butternut Coconut curry, we find that a Coconut curry is usually a lot more mild than others, unfortunately this was not the case in this instance, a couple of bowls of plain yoghurt were just about sufficient to counteract the spiciness. The serving team were excellent

stopped here yesterday lunch time as the weather was so nice and we could sit outside in the sunshine. We were only intending to have a coffee but decided to have homemade soup and roll instead. It was absolutely delicious. Staff were very attentive. We would definitely return.

We went in for a drink and was recommended the roast dinner. We booked for Sunday lunch after being told the roast dinners were 'banging'. There was nothing banging about the roast dinner!!! Looked amazing but thats it. Veg was bland and boring with no taste. Beef needed a steak knife, tough as old boots. Gravy had no flavour. It was really underwhelming. There are much better roast dinners in Liverpool which are also cheaper. Staff weren't very attentive or friendly. Music was nice though but that's about it!

Struggled to get a table in the city on a busy Saturday. ‘Fell back’ on this place, which I thought was more pub than grub. Table of 5, everyone delighted with food. Pulled lamb starter for me, with possibly the best fish and chips I’ve had in restaurant or pub. Mate who travels and eats around the globe was full of praise for food. Lovely helpful staff, reasonable prices. No trouble to look after us when unexpected additions rolled up. Lovely vibe.

Meal was ruined by the member of staff with the worst attitude I’ve experienced in many years. Main course plates left on the table for over 15 minutes. A member of our party had to leave the table and found the waiting staff chatting behind the bar, they asked for the sweet menus. She arrived at the table and we asked for the table to be cleared, so she offered us a choice clear the table or take the sweet order. She said “I’ve only got one pair of hands” So we decided to end the meal and paid and left. Never ever again will I or my family darken the door of this establishment. I only gave one star as you can’t give anything less.

We visited yesterday as a party of 10 for a birthday celebration. The place itself is big but feels cosy at the same time, the staff were welcoming and service throughout was great. The food was fresh and tasty - I’m vegetarian but try to eat more vegan when I’m out so I had the vegan arancini to start and then the falafel sandwich that comes with vegan feta and sun-dried tomatoes, both were lovely and the Prosecco was delicious. There are gluten free options on the menu as well as the option to make some of the dishes gluten free if required. They accommodate for babies and allow dogs too, the toilets are downstairs but there is a disabled toilet on the ground level and baby changing facilities. Great place and I will be back to taste more off the menu

Poor breakfast, I ordered eggs florentine and my eggs were undercooked, when I broke the yolk a load of white ran out. Coffee was good and the staff were friendly but for a breakfast that cost nearly £10, the food was poor.
