Palm Pan Asia in Winchester

We went for lunch on a Saturday (the day being important) and ended up walking away without even reaching our table. We'd booked a table for 2pm on the understanding that the restaurant would be open all afternoon - I've cut and pasted the following from their website 2 minutes ago ...... Saturday - Open All Day 12-10 pm We arrived 15 mins late, for which we apologised, and were told that the kitchen was closing shortly and we'd have to be out of the restaurant by 3pm as it closed at that time on a Saturday. So that gave us approx 30 minutes to order, eat and pay. That obviously wasn't going to happen so we left and found somewhere else to eat. This clearly isn't the first time this has happened as the lady on the reception desk told us she's told the owner several times that the website opening hours need changing. The booking system also seems to allow bookings up to 2.4 5pm on Saturdays, so something really is amiss. If we'd made a special visit to Winchester just to eat at this restaurant we'd have kicked up more of a stink. As it was we were just really frustrated and annoyed at having to find somewhere else last minute.

Big restaurant at the bottom end of Winchester. Easy for parking. Service ok. Large menu and staff very accommodating of making changes to suit personal tastes. Food fresh, piping hot and quick to come. The Prawns were massive! Lovely experience. Would definitely recommend and return.

The food was great and the service was fantastic with our waitress being really friendly, personable and welcoming. Lovely relaxing atmosphere - I would highly recommend for dinner.

We have dined here on several occasions both as a couple and with friends . We have never been disappointed. The menu is very comprehensive with lots of unusual choices . Service is very good and staff very friendly and helpful . Food is brilliantly cooked . We shall continue to eat here when we can . Thoroughly recommend ed .

The food was lovely as always but not very hot, there were several things not available which was disappointing the staff were lovely.

Another lovely meal at PPA. As usual the food was fantastic. I took my daughter who is a fussy eater so was worried she might go hungry but it transpires they have a really great kids menu. The staff were more than happy to adjust spicy level too which was lovely. She loved the Asian chicken nuggets and said it was now her favourite. As always, I enjoyed the massaman curry. I had a pudding today, the chocolate truffle. It was really yummy, really rich, the dried raspberries took it to another level. I can’t recommend this place enough to everyone and having now experienced it with children, I would encourage those with younger families to give it a try.

Visited last night with a friend. Food was FAB! I am a coeliac and need GF food.. no bother at all! Very knowledgeable on GF requirements etc! Thank you! Will be back again soon!!

Friendly, attentive and professional team of staff. Too bad that the signature lamb massaman was not available to half the party that wished to order it. We were advised before orders were placed, though. Otherwise an extensive range of great dishes from which to choose. Cannot fault the dinibg experience and shall certainly return.

Very happy to find an open restaurant In Winchester on a Monday. Many still closed on Mon & Tues. Staff very friendly and efficient. However the menu descriptions and website claims did not quite live up to expectations. Some dishes were very good but two were underwhelming... the vegetarian massiman curry was dull ( beige with only carrots to liven it up) and under seasoned. The vegetarian Tom Yum ( coconut one) lacking depth of flavour and had only (too large) chunks of white mushrooms in it. We will be back but with perhaps slightly lower expectations.

Everything was spot on, all the dishes were fresh and nicely spiced. Rice nice and fluffy. Service polite and unobtrusive but attentive.

I went for a lovely meal with my family to celebrate my birthday. The staff were friendly, the food was delicious (one of my favourites) and generally just had a really lovely time. I would highly recommend a visit!

We love PPA and have been coming here as a family for a couple of years, since moving to Winchester. It has been a real shame that lockdown has prevented them from operating as usual - it was great to go back tonight for a treat, just the two of us. The front-of-house greeting and service was superb, and we really felt welcomed. Drinks and food orders were taken quickly, and the waiter returned to check that the order received by the kitchen was correct (far better than risking getting it wrong). Wine was ice cold and served properly. Starters were very nice, although in our gluttony we ordered too much - the Thai ribs are melt-in-the-mouth tender meat, and the size of a small steak. Partner's lemongrass fish skewers were likewise lovely. We also ordered the tempura vegetables, which were divinely crispy and tasty and I ate too many...... My main course of coconut/cashew crusted chicken on top of mango salad was lovely, the crunch was great against the sharp fruity salad. Partner had sea bass - loved it. Far too full to consider dessert but that was our fault entirely. I have no hesitation in recommending this excellent restaurant - the fact that the waiter looked concerned at my not-competely-cleared plate (which was due to my aforementioned gluttony) and asked if everything had been OK just exemplifies how much the team cares about their customers. There was a kind, understanding smile offered when we pointed out we were completely stuffed, though! Tiny point - to conform (I think) with govt regs re: COVID-19 the ceiling fans/air con were on full blast and it was freezing cold. Management sorted it out quickly by turning it down when we pointed out the temperature issue - take a cardigan though. A really great restaurant with a really great manager and whole team. Such a pleasure to eat at PPA - we will be back.

Lovely food and great service. We came a couple of years ago and remembered a lovely atmosphere however this evening it was quite cold due to the air con and there was no music playing so definitely did not have the same atmosphere . However food still lovely and meeting friends we hadn’t seen for so long we still had a lovely evening .

We enjoy meals here. Regular visitors. Welcome needs to be little more warm. Face covering is compulsory. We all know it is govt regulation. They send you back instead of providing one if you forget to get one. It costs 25p only. They an easily provide one and ask to put money in charity box instead of sending customers back

We are so pleased to be able to lunch at Palm Pan Asia again, we have missed you so much during lockdown. As always the service and meal was excellent today, wish you were a little nearer to Whitchurch where we live! Operating with a slightly reduced menu than before the Crisis PPA still has all the favourites delivering excellent dishes beautifully presented, backed up with attentive and friendly service. Back at its best

Pro's -Polite staff Exceptional tasting rendang. Lovely coconut rice.Changed a dish to chicken on request when ordering. Cons -On arrival we were just left waiting at reception.Remnants of food on the floor under our table.Starter portion sizes small Food presentation nothing like in the pictures. King prawn dish difficult to eat as prawns rubbery & overcookedChicken a bit chewy.Not offered desserts or coffee.Service charge! All in all i would not return again if i came to winchester as I did not find the food reflected the photos that they show online. The quality of food was just average, nothing that I've not tried in most other Thai restaurants. Service at the beginning and end were poor and we were not even offered a dessert menu. Or even the bill. We had to search for someone to ask for the bill. Did not pay the hefty service charge as a) i hate that some restaurants do this, it should be the customer's choice to tip. B) The service was just not worth it.

Firstly, one of the best beef rendangs ive tasted. Beautifully cooked and tasty. Changed a dish from beef to chicken upon request for my sister. However, we were disappointed in the service near the end of the meal. Sat trying to get attention for about 20minutes. Not offered the dessert menu or the bill. Service charge automatically added to the bill which i didnt like. I would much prefer to give a tip based on the service provided. Nice food but probably wouldn't return as there was no 'wow' factor. Nothing I havent tried before.

We visited on Wednesday evening. Great first outing after liberation. Staff were very professional, food was delicious with some new dishes on menu. No problem catering for dietary needs. Thoroughly recommend PPA.

I checked the reviews which lived up to expectation, we received VERY good service from our waiter and waitress, they were very well trained and very attentive. The food was great quality. We started with calamari which came in a very light batter and fresh chilli, we then had beef rendang and two sides of vegetable with aubergine and sticky rice. This was plenty for the two of us. If you would like a gorgeous meal this will be a great choice.

We enjoyed our return to PalmPan Asia today with a tasty tapas set 3 option from the varied menu. The manager was very welcoming and helpful . Very happy to be back inside this restaurant & glad they have kept the tapas set options as they are great value .

Great tasting food with lots of flavour. The only disappointment was the portion size of the duct spring rolls. For £7.95 I expected more.

Lovely meal and excellent service. Food is great. Had the Balinese chicken which was subtly flavoured and not overpowering with a coconut rice. Highly recommended.

Wow! The food is fantastic. Great staff, great food, great place! This is a gem of restaurant and in now one of our favourite places to eat in Winchester. We had the tapas and could not fault it, perfect!

My first visit to Palm Pan Asia and I was not unsatisfied with the food. The vegetable tempura platter was delicious and crispy. The king prawn green and Massaman curries were rich and flavourful, although the potatoes in the Massaman curry were stiff and insipid. The coconut rice was fragrant and was ideal to absorb the sauces.

Food is good and place is nice . We were reserved from 6pm to 8 pm and we’re aware of that but staff came to tell us 4 x that we’re only up to 8 pm and it was only 7:30 pm.. People are not stupid enough to be reminded how many times .. for the record !!! We left at exactly 8pm !!!

Quick service and tasty, colourful plates of food in a vibrant atmosphere. Really enjoyed a family birthday meal out before the second lockdown starts.

Just spent a couple of days in Winchester and booked a table here for dinner. Food was very nice, we had the prawn and mango salad and fish cakes to start and sea bass and lamb for main both very tasty. Staff were very attentive and friendly. Would recommend if you are in the area.

1st visit, couldn't be happier with the quality of our meals. Great service and covid19 safety measures in place.

Chilli everywhere . We taste 3 different main course Duck,sea bass and rack of lamb. Couldn’t test the sea bass or duck too hot with chilli ,and lamb was quite dry ,well over cook .

The Best around for authentic Thai food. Have been several tunes and it never disappoints. Visited for wedding anniversary in September and the staff were very professional and the place set out well following guidelines.The food is spot on and plentiful. A great variety of dishes to suit everyone’s tastebuds. We will be back!

An excellent experience. We felt the cov8d health precautions were just right. The staff attention was exemplary. The menu was very good and of course the food was amazing and reminded me of our visit to Koh Samui, just perfect. Well done and thank you to all at Palm Pan Asia

Always Delicious genuine Thai food ( loved the calamari in the mixed sharing starter) and excellent service. Great variety in the menu and reasonably priced.

Every time I go to Palm Pan Asia, the food is excellent and so is the service. That's why we keep returning. We took friends this time as they had never been before and the only downside was it took them ages to decide what to order as there were so many dishes that they wanted!

Really delicious lunch to celebrate my mums birthday , plenty of choice from the tapas menu or set menu and great value . Staff were charming and helpful. We will be back very soon .

This is our favourite restaurant in Winchester by some margin. Always great food and great service in a really nice environment. I honestly can’t recommend this place highly enough.

This restaurant was recommended to us and did not disappoint. We both enjoyed the Lamb Shank Massaman, good flavours and very tender meat. The staff were friendly and the restaurant was fully COVID-19 secure.

Exceptional visit for lunch. Staff knowledge and awareness of the gluten free options was excellent and the range of gluten free food available on the menu was the largest I have seen at a Thai restaurant. Both of our meals were very tasty! We will definitely be back soon!

Delicious food and wonderful service! The duck pancakes were the best I’ve tasted. The food was of high quality and with complex flavour sauces. Service was prompt and friendly without being obtrusive. Great value also. We rounded off with espresso martinis that rivalled my own! Great evening.

Went last Saturday and was totally impressed with everything.The food was superb and I was blown away with the presentation and taste.A free birthday drink, £10 off the bill, ice cream with a candle and a shot (all free) was fantastic.staff worked really hard to ensure our safety and provided great service.

The food is so tasty, the staff offer a fantastic service and I would highly recommend. The relaxing atmosphere is great for girly dinner dates, couples night and we recently took are two children. Great choice and I cannot fault anything!

The food we received was absolutely fantastic! We all enjoyed our dishes and took some home to enjoy for the day after! The only qualm we would have was the service was very rushed. We arrived two hours before service stopped so it was very strange to feel as though everything was being pushed on us. The servers paid no attention to us wanting a few more minutes and kept pushing the menus onto our table and they took away my plates and cutlery before I had finished. I would definitely go there again for the food but I think maybe a friendly atmosphere especially during this time wouldn’t go amiss

My friends and I got food to go, we are new to the city so trying lots of places out. Collection service was really easy, massaman curry and rendang were amazing and so full of flavour. Will dine in next time as the restaurant looked clean and welcoming.

We really like this restaurant. Always friendly service and good food. I particularly like the tapas style options allowing for variety without overeating. Beware the 'hot' signs mean HOT.

The staff were exceptionally well trained and the atmosphere was very good. The food tasted good, was well presented and the portion size was good. The price was refective of the location. I would return.

We booked into this Thai restaurant on a busy Friday night and although crowded there was plenty of room. The service was excellent and food superb. The staff were polite and attentive. I would certainly recommend this restaurant if you are visiting Winchester.

We were on a coach holiday to Isle of Wight from North West England and were given a 90 minutes break in Winchester at lunchtime. We came across Palm Pan Asia just before their closing time and were so glad we did. We had a small selection of the tapas including mixed tempura vegetables, prawn crackers and duck spring rolls amongst others which were excellent with very good portions. If ever we find ourselves in Winchester again we will head for Palm Pan Asia.

Warm welcome when we arrived, superb service throughout the evening and fabulous food. Sadly not local so will have to wait until next time we are in the area to visit again.

Visited the restaurant for our anniversary dinner for the first time. The restaurant looks really nice, there were social distancing measures in place and all the employees wore masks. We got served quickly and the servers answered our questions really nicely. The food was delicious and also served quickly. Loved the overall experience!

The atmosphere of the restaurant was buzzing. It was quite noisy, but that can be expected for a Saturday night. Food was amazing - portion sizes were probably slightly too big. We would go again, and next time would probably share a main!

I will say that the measures in place are fairly robust, we were a few minutes early for our table and i think its understandable to be turned away and not accommodating slightly early guests causing overcrowding. The food was pleasant, although we did ask for Tofu with our Pad Thai and it never appeared. The meal was of a good standard. There did seem to be an inordinate amount of hussle behind the bar, probably required behind the bar, but it seemed in dramatic short flourishes and then inactive talking than a considered approach to a busy Saturday night and this practice was encouraged and displayed by the restaurant manager on the night as well.We chose a bottle of2016 Albarino from the menu priced at £34.95. this hastily appeared at our table in a wine cooler opened and was left to pour ourselves in two unmatching wine glasses. As I poured I noticed it was in fact a 2019 bottle of Albarino we were now in a situation where if we have been shown the bottle in the traditional manner we could have avoided the whole episode. When I brought this matter to the restaurant managers attention he claimed that he couldn't have the menu reprinted to show the correct year because of Covid and beside "what was my issue as everyone knew the 2019 was better than the 2016 and more expensive. So we should in fact be paying more" That unfortunately wasn't the basis for my selection. The matter was again handled at pace. The barman appeared offering as free drink of Lemoncello, something that I probably hadn't considered after an Asian meal before. I politely declined as he speedily came back with an offer of a Bailey Cream, another drink that I didn't want but was pleased he was at least attempting some form of rapid customer repsonse. After waiting a full hour for the bill appear as the restaurant manager deliberately and at break neck speed deliberately avoided us we resumed our stand off when the bill finally appeared. He was only willing to take £4.95 off the bill. In practice he could have avoided the whole situation by correctly serving the wine. He actively enjoyed escalating what turned into a uncomfortable confrontation. He was probably frayed from the Eat out to Help out campaign and operating at the same speed and indignation as the previous month, however all he was required to do was apologise, perhaps recognise he wasn't that busy, take a breath, reflect on the mistake in procedure and not use the death of 44,108 people is this country as an a pitiful excuse to serve the wrong wine to someone who didn't want it.

Thoroughly enjoyed our evening here. Delicious food and efficient,friendly service. All staff seemed to be very Covid aware. Felt very safe.

Whilst in Winchester last week I dropped in here for my evening meal and must say I was really impressed. Friendly welcome and all the staff were really nice. The food was superb. Chicken Pad Ga Prow was tasty and spicy as requested. Even though it was September they were still offering the 50% discount which was an added bonus. A really enjoyable meal.

Lucky and the team are fantastic - food was delicious (always order the platter to start) and their customer service is excellent. As a SME business owner I take tips for this team! Fully recommend.

All food was really good, especially the starters. We got three to share between two of us and they were all so nice. Restaurant was nicely decorated and clean and service was good. Only negatives are prices are a tad above average and the service charge is added to your bill in advance which I don't like. I want to be able to decide how much I want to tip.

First visit here during Covid. The building is nice and airy. The manager or owner who was on front of house was a bit stressed because of some people complaining about not being able to sit where they wanted - coronaidiots basically. But once we got chatting he turned out very friendly and explained the dishes well. Food was really good, especially Massaman curry which he said was slow cooked for more than a day and was super tender. Will be back again definately.

Great tasting Thai Food - ranging from the Massaman to the Papaya Salad. Tables were nicely seperated between tables to be Covid compliant. The staff were attentive and polite.

The food was absolutely delicious, we agreed the best takeaway we’ve ever had. They were accommodating on my bespoke order and also the Koong Chu Chi was exceptional! Can’t imagine how lovely it would be if we had eaten in. Highly recommend and can’t wait for our next time!
