We were a party of 8 celebrating an Engagement & 30th Birthday and were welcomed by friendly helpful staff. The drinks were reasonable, the food was good and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We had a lovely evening and will definitely go back again.

Family meal out. Friendly service and lovely setting. Food not as impressive. The calamari starters were cheap frozen calamari served with salad and no dressing. Burgers were huge but bland in taste. One of our party had steak pie (never seen that offered in an Italian before) plenty of meat but pastry disappointing. Side order of onion rings, once again frozen. No children's menu. Can recon the sea bass though. Shame really. Anyway been but unfortunately won't be paying another visit.

Always knew of the listed building which is the ‘Sun Inn’ at Castleford but hadn’t heard of the Palm Court Bar until I asked TripAdvisor to suggest nice restaurants whilst parked in the Sun Inn car park, as they didn’t serve food when we arrived. I always like to try unusual venues and Trip Advisor is perfect when reviews are accurate. This restaurant didn’t live up to its average of 4 stars but warranted 3-4 valuation score systems, as it excelled in other dimensions. We arrived around 3pm on quiet pre Christmas Tuesday afternoon and had the place to ourselves. The outside first impressions don’t do the inside justice. It is partly an old chapel, partly old Italian shabby chic beach cafe, and with baby piano and very rustic wooden floors and Greek pale green vaulted ceilings. The rooms atmosphere shouts out many happy times. It is in need of full redecoration and new plastic plants or even real fig or possiby orange/lemon trees, but is just still aiming in the right direction. The chef was our host and chef. We both had the salmon which was quick delivered with a smile and was tasty and tender but the vegetables in the ‘hollandaise’ sauce were reheated or certainly microwaved. The food slightly let it down but overall I liked the feeling of many good times in this beautiful old converted church. This venue is potentially 5star when redecorated, on this day 4 star, and the food, even though not pre booked only deserved 2-3 stars but with more customers and staff could easily achieve 4-5 stars. So worthy of a visit but needs more staff and a bit of TLC.

Came to the palm court for the first time , its like stepping back in time . The carvery is very good value £10.50 for two courses or £13.50 for three courses . I was given choice and choose the three meats all beautifully cooked . The vegetables were all freshly prepared . It's piping hot , with proper gravy .it was like having Sunday dinner at home. The desserts were lovely plenty of choice I will certainly come back , all the staff are friendly . The atmosphere is fabulous it did used to be the miners welfare . A lovely meal in a lovely place

We came here as a couple for my partners birthday meal and it was very pleasant. The service was great and the food was fast and lovely. There is quite a small range of wines for an Italian restaurant but you have your core flavours, however value for money on both the food and drink is great. But overall we had a great meal, I would recommend here for groups or couples as there is a lot more room inside than one might expect!

Been here a few times and the food is always lovely and hot and everything is home made. Decor is homely and nice back ground music even though we once went and the music was not on until a large family left. People who were trying the place for the first time did mention to me about the music so i mentioned it to the staff. I was surprised the chef served the table at times. Going again this week with inlaws and children and im sure it will be lovely.

I ate here tonight with a group of friends, the building doesn't look very inviting from the outside but the name Palm Court is very apt for the atmosphere inside. The decor is lovely. We were served by very friendly staff, the service was good to say we were a large group and everyone enjoyed the food. I had seafood tagliatelle which was very tasty. I would certainly go back again, I notice some of the earlier reviews are unfavourable, well I can only assume that the management have got their act together since then because I had a lovely evening, thanks. to all the staff for making the visit such a pleasure.

My partner and I visited on Tuesday 21 feb for the first time. We have often drove past and been put off by the exterior, however I am so glad that we went in and ate because the service and the food was great. I had a pizza which was freshly made and very tasty and generously filled. My partner had the steak pie which was fantastic and the chips were perfect. The waitress and the chef were very helpful and happy in their work. We will revisit and I'm told the Sunday lunch is very good. Keep up the good work 👍😁

They serve really good quality food here to suit most tastes but the carbonara is my favourite, Sunday lunch is reputed to be superb with a Carvery option although I have yet to try I have heard several good reports and booking is definitely recommended, the interior is a little unusual and a few more features would benefit the place, parking is limited to some extent, really worth a try if you are looking for a change of venue.

Externally in the daytime the venue is not so attractive and in need of freshing up. However the Trip Adviser reviews and the restaurant website encouraged us to give it a go. What a lovely venue internally - so light and welcoming. Quiet time due to it being teatime, but all the staff were so helpful, warm and welcoming followed by smashing quality food, we certainly were pleased to have gone inside and would encourage others to do so. Thank you to all the staff for a relaxing environment with quality food and service.

Relaxed atmosphere, tasty food and friendly staff. We will be going again, possibly on a Sunday to sample the carvery. I would recommend this venue to anyone with kids or elderly friends or relatives, as the owner tells us that they will cook certain things to order. So when great grandma Maureen says she just wants a plain chicken breast, that's what she'll get. Recommended!

I was encouraged to eat at this place by the reviews, and visited last Saturday with friends. I am not sure who wrote the glowing reviews, as they bore no resemblance to this Palm Court. The staff were hopeless, the food very poor, the girls serving drinks hadn't a clue, about alcoholic drinks, she never even thought to offer a wine list. The restaurant couldn't take cards, because of some problem. After demanding a reduction we were offered a small one, as the clearly had no authority to make any concessions to customers. The owner was not available, so we paid and left.Needless to say this was the first and last trip to this place.

We went here on Saturday evening with relatives. What should have been a special occasion with them was a disaster. We arrived at 7-15 to find the car park full even though the place was almost empty. The table we were shown to they had laid for eight not six.The first greeting was we would have to pay cash as the card machine wasn't working. We were asked what drinks we would like but we were not offered a wine list by the young incompetent girl. The tonics came minus ice or lemon she had no idea what beer they had.Three people had the seafood platter for first course,it consisted of a pile of shredded lettuce with a few muscles calamari and tiny prawns straight from a pickle jar.It should have come with crusty bread, when this was pointed out the waitress was prepared to argue that it only came with another starter. After referring to the menu she conceded she was wrong and brought out six small pieces of stale bread. The main courses were equally dreadful, three fish pasta dishes had miniscule amounts of fish in a gloopy tomato sauce. One persons chicken dish was pork, this was pointed out and the 'chef' was summoned, his explanation was it came out of the same box as the chicken!!.The potatoes as described with herbs etc.were new boiled. We were told it had been pointed out before to the owner that several things were not as described and she needed to update the menu I did say we expected a reduction for the meal.We were given the phone number of Maureen the owner, as the waitress hadn't got the authority to make the reduction we wanted, she did take a small amount off. This was a Saturday night with ten people in the place. If it stays open much longer I'd be astonished.

We went here by pure accident as thought we had booked for the Rising Sun next door. We were told the chefs had walked out 2 days previously. However we had an excellent meal at the PALM COURT. It is initially an Italian restaurant but also serving English food.I had creamy garlic mushrooms and plentiful they were too. Very rich flavours and piping hot, followed by sea bass and four vegetables garnished with a white wine and garlic jus.The food was delicious and again piping hot. Hubby had pate etc for his starters and a correctly cooked sirloin steak with accompaniments. There was soft dreamy music and you could hear yourself talk. The receptionist/waitress was extremely good at her job , attentive and compliant and very pleasant. The desserts looked lovely but no room at the inn [so to speak] Two very generous courses were sufficient. YES we will go again and can highly recommend,

I had the prawn and advocado starter which was delightful with half a beautiful fresh advocado and lots of prawns. My hubby had the mushrooms stuffed with cheese and he said they were nice. For my main I had the arrabiatta pasta which was very nice and my husband had vegetarian pizza with seasonal vegetables. The Palm Court is the nearest restaurant to where we live. Even if it weren't. we'd still be good customers. The menu has an emphasis on Italian food but there are British favourites available, too; the wine and lager are not expensive and there is usually an offer on giving customers 2 meals for £12 - bargain! They are also very accommodating: I don't eat meat but wanted to eat there one Sunday lunchtime when there is a carvery. I asked if I could have my favourite cannelloni from the menu and this was soon brought, no fuss, so I got my reasonably priced, three courses without meat. Lovely

I have to say we were so looking forward to eating out on xmas day. We had opted for the second sitting at 3pm. On arrival, the tables were still being cleared from the 12 midday sitting. Eventually we were seated and it all looked very promising. Very nice starters (we ordered 2 smoked salmon and 3 garlic mushrooms) although one person waited so long for their garlic mushrooms to arrive that the rest of us had finished. However, the main course was served as a carvery. There didnt appear to be any system. Some tables got up and started queuing we had expected that we would be asked to get up in some kind of order..no, this was not the case. When it came to our turn to be served,(which by the way it was now 5.15pm- 2 and a quarter hours later) there was no mash and no roast potatoes left. The man serving didnt say a word he just disappeared. He did return shortly afterwards with very lumpy mash and some decent roast potatoes. The cauliflower cheese was black on top and the sausages were done to a crisp to say the least. The deserts were served chaotically with the wrong things being brought to the table. All in all, I think the problem was they took on 2 sittings. We would not go back again because of this. And at £45 per person I did expect better than this.

This place is a hidden gem! Visited on Saturday 31 October at 4pm as we weren't able to visit in the evening. The restaurant was open, and for a while we were the only ones there, so we got to pick our own table. The man in charge was very welcoming and gave lovely service - he offered to make recommendations, brought us drinks and made sure all our needs were catered to. He even put the music etc on for us, so it was a little like hiring the whole restaurant out! The atmosphere is really nice. The building is grade II and is decorated in a very cute, shabby chic way, with a piano in the middle of the room. To start we had funghi alla crema, which was absolutely delicious (the crusty bread was even warm) and insalata crapese (mozarella and tomato) which had ingredients of a really good quality. For our main courses we opted for the fillet steak and peppercorn sauce, which was a little more cooked than my husband typically likes his medium rare to be, but that was made up for by the yummy sauce and excellent homemade chips. I went for branzino a gamberoni (sea bass and prawns) which came with beautifully seasoned new potatoes. The sea bass and prawns had been cooked in an italian style with basil and rosemary seasoning and was mouth-wateringly good. The dish also came with plenty of vegetables. I'd have liked it if the vegetables and potatoes were also cooked in with italian seasonings if you select an italian dish from the menu, but I can see why these come cooked in the standard way when people also have a choice of english dishes too. For desert we decided to go with the apple pie and custard, and the eton mess. Both were decadent and indulgent. The perfect end to the meal. The value for money of this place is great. They also do a Sunday carvery which we think will be our next treat!

My partner and I initially went to the Rising Sun next door in search of a cheap evening meal as we had been on the road most of the day and not dressed or ready for and evening out. We were disappointed that we couldn't have this dish for 40mins until the menus changed at 6pm so decided to pop through to Palm Court somewhere I have dined before but almost 8yrs ago. The restaurant was empty so we had a choice of table - the proprietor popped the music on and we sat waiting for 2 lasagne's a house salad and home made chips which we shared. We were concerned by the ping of the microwave as although you expect this at a supermarket restaurant I would not be happy with this at an Italian that boasts home made food. We were assured that this is to defrost only -skeptical we waited, we were not disappointed -the food was delicious pipping hot and so plentiful I took half of it home. The salad was dressed perfectly and the chips perfect. We will definitely return and try the Sunday lunch and the all day breakfast. We then ordered the lasagne and a pizza for mains, both where great! The service was very friendly and it felt like I was a loved guest in someone's home.We also had a bottle of wine and the whole meal came to around £34, a price you would never expect in this day and age!The card machine didn't work so we had to walk to the cash machine to cash, which we didn't mind! All round great experience, will definitely be visiting here in the future!

Me and my partner visited here for a meal one day last week and I was so dissapointed after reading reviews I was sure it would be lovely however the beer was awful the food was ok but nothing special but the main thing was the exterior the building looks shabby with green carpet on the floor outside plastic garden chairs and rubbish down the side. The entire building could do with renovation we expected much better judging by the reviews and photos

Visited for lunch and really enjoyed the quality of food and value for money. The restaurant from outside does not look the most inviting and I have driven past on a number of occasions but this place is well worth a visit. We had a lunchtime special which was 2 meals for £12. We had fresh pasta dishes which were really good, we also had a garlic bread which was lovely and would encourage me to have pizza next time I visit. The staff were really pleasant without being in your face.I would certainly recommend to others and will be trying again on an evening next time.

What lovely staff, they made us feel welcome and it was like visiting friends, they were more than happy to chat and answer our questions about the building. The food was amazing and I was disappointed that u couldn't fit in a pudding. Not bad price either. On a day out on Bank Holiday Monday and needed somewhere to eat to avoid the Diggerland cafe. Stumbled on this place and gave it a go based on some good Tripadviser feedback. We weren't disappointed. Slightly antiquated and quirky surroundings in an old hall but good service and tasty food with very reasonable prices. Have always been a bit loathed to pay through the nose for Italian food which for me is often simply pasta with a sauce but felt the prices were realistic. No doubt will return if we are ever in the area.

My dad found this by looking for reviews on Tripadvisor and what a find. From the outside it looks quite small, boy was I wrong it was very large and can seat a number of people. The staff are lovely and very welcoming. They also gave us a brief history of the place that we all found very interesting. To start with I had calamari fritti, very reasonably priced and was cooked perfectly. For mains I had alla Palma del cortile calzone. Really enjoyed it and it beat me, I couldn't finish it.All of our party had a lovely evening and will certainly be going back.

Found by chance as we were killing time in Castleford. Looked on Tripadvisor and decided on the Palm Court which, we were informed, used to be a miners institute. Not well signposted and walked in the pub first of all but eventually found the restaurant. It was Valentine's night and we had not booked but as we were early, there was no problem getting a table. The staff were friendly and helpful, there was a good selection of food which was hot, reasonably priced and of a good quality. Limoncello not served in iced glass though but I don't think they got a lot of requests for it. Owner kindly popped the bottle in the freezer though! The inside was unusual and quirky and we would definitely visit again.

Booked for mums 70th birthday on Saturday evening at 6pm, February 7th 2015.We had to increase the numbers from the original booking - this wasn't a problem and ended with a table for 14.Booked early as there were a few of us, drinks were purchased at the lovely little bar, we all seated and then orders were taken, all the starters soon arrived, followed by mains. The restaurant was quickly filling up by now with another birthday party in that night too.All agreed the food was delicious, we nearly all had different dishes so too many to list, pasta, pizza, chicken, steak, etc - I have to comment on my Pepper Fillet Steak and amazing hand made chunky chips, brilliant !. The only tiny thing was we had to ask a few times for desserts as the restaurant was now full, but apart from that it would have all 5 stars. My compliments to the kitchen and waiting staff, We will be back and recommend to anyone.

Great place for pasta and pizza, and we love the Sunday dinner too, which is often accompanied by a live pianist. Myself and my friend went last night. We have both visited the majority of local Italians in the area. We can honestly say that the food here surpasses all the others. The lasagne and penne pollo were beautiful and the baileys cheesecake to die for.Yes , take Palm Court for what it is, a quirky place, a bit of a strange set up, but the staff couldn't be more friendly and the food gorgeous. Give it a try.

We reserved a table for a family rendezvous, the family having Italian roots. The car parking is very limited so I parked on the road. The building interior is very nicely presented and interesting. The menu is comprehensive and the chef / proprietor from Italy so we were very encouraged. The first course was beautifully presented, of good quality ingrediants and contrary to the usual experience of square plates, the content was very adequate. The main courses we all agreed were superb in flavour and easily met the standards expected in Italy. We finished on the home made Tiramisu and that was spot-on.Throughout the meal the waiting to table and light hearted banter was very professional and unintrusive. One helpful comment to the proprietor would be to replace the dilapidated heater and hand-dryer in the Gents toilets. Not expensive items and legitimate business expenses at that.In conclusion we are already planning the next family get-together at Palm Court.

On entering the Palm Court, it looks lovely. An elderly lady sits playing at a grand piano and the tables are laid out nicely. Its a very old building, that used to be Arthur Curier Briggs Hall, but they done it out nice. My friend doesn't eat red meat, so she telephoned to ask what the carvery meat would be, on being told turkey would be included, she booked us a table. But turkey was not on the carvery, after complaining, the chef cooked a piece of chicken for my friend. The chef wasn't wearing a hat and his "whites" were dirty. I went to the loo and a stack of tables were half blocking the fire exit! The food, was awful. The meats were ok, but there was no stuffing to go with the pork, the cauliflower cheese was mush, not even a lump in it, the mash was solid and tasted instant. There was a dish with 1/2inch of oil in bottom with, what turned out to be, mushy parsnips in! The roast potatoes were soft with no sign of colour and the carrot mash also mushy. On a side table were 4 sundae dishes containing sauces. The apple was like baby food, obviously from a cheap jar! The savoy cabbage was overcooked and the Yorkshires cold. The gravy was ok. Several members of staff went up to the carvery and picked up meat with their fingers, and ate it! The bill took some sorting out as they wanted to charge us for drinks, which we purchased from the bar. Most housewives could have produced a better lunch and the £6.99 price was certainly not worth it. When we complained, the chef said "its hard to keep food warm on a carvery, shall I microwave it for you". I don't think so, my friend was very embarrassed, so I didn't complain further, but I will never go again.

Where to begin with this cute little place...a potentially excellent restaurant with dedicated staff and, sadly, an owner with her head in the clouds. So much potential is lost here because the owner is essentially playing a game of "restaurants", often too busy walking her dog or, bizarrly, looking after her disabled sister who is sat watching TV in the restaurant itself. It is, to be honest, an odd set-up. But put all of that aside and you can enjoy a real gastronomic treat, with pizzas to rival any you will find in Italy, and an array of excellent dishes. The chefs here are desperate to get this adorable little gem the reputation it deserves and which it would have, were it not for the eccentric owner. Prices are very reasonable and, if you can take a good dollop of patience and tolerance along with you for the times when the owner is around and slowing things down, the food will make you glad you did! Give it a go!

My Mum and I visited for lunch approx 4 weeks ago, following a recommendation and reading some good TA reviews.Unfortunately for us, it was a disaster and we left without eating due to poor service and uncleanliness. On arrival, we were given menus and ordered 2 soft drinks, a diet coke and a lime and soda. When the drinks arrived, the lime and soda had 3 beer flies in it. This was promptly sent back and replaced. When we came to order, we were both looking forward to an authentic Italian pizza as we knew the restaurant had a pizza oven. The owner/chef informed us that a pizza would be 35 minutes as he hadn't switched the oven on. When I asked why, as this is an Italian restaurant with a menu containing many pizza options, his response was that he only switches it on when people order but that he could do pasta straight away.As we had already decided that pizza was our choice, this was not only disappointing but very strange. The owner/chef seemed unsure of everything, there were no other staff present and he seemed completely out of his depth, rushing about and sweating.Given these issues, we decided to leave without eating, left our drinks and a token payment on the table to cover a few mouthfuls we'd consumed. No-one tried to approach us to apologise or ask why.A very poor and disappointing experience. Our subsequent hot paninis and chips at the New Wheatsheaf down the road were delicious and most welcome!

Well we have been for lunch today (5 of us) for a nice Italain style long lunch. We are an Italian family so know how we like the Italian foods and Giuseppe did not fail us. This is an amazing restaurant the food is all freshly prepared and cooked, it took a little bit of time to get to you, but it was definitely worth the wait!! There were 7 of is we all had starters, mains and many beers and bottles of prossecco and the bill only came to £160 . Very reasonable I thought the bill was wrong and we had been undercharged, but it was correct. We will now go every time we want to have a fantastic meal out without going into leeds etc.

We visited early evening and took advantage of a discounted main course menu. We chose full priced starters and shared a sweet. My wife had garlic mushroom starter and it was well cooked, with the button mushrooms still being firm but cooked. The garlic creamy sauce was well balanced and tasty without being too rich. I had a seafood salad. Probably decanted from a pre pickled batch but it was tasty and the components were good quality. For mains we had spaghetti carbonara and penne pollo. Again well cooked and presented. The pasta was done just as I like it, not too soft. Portions were ample but not out facing. Despite that we were both full enough that we shared a sweet. We chose the tiramisu. It appeared to be homemade and was certainly fresh. Again the portion was generous. Maybe because we were sharing?Service was attentive without being intrusive. The bill was under £40 and represented good value for what we'd had. The venue is an ex Miners Welfare Hall and whilst high ceilinged has some atmosphere and original features. It would benefit from some TLC and more parking. Neither of these issues detracted from our visit.

We had booked for 5.30pm on saturday but when we turned up their was nobody in. The restaurant looked like an old village hall however it is tastefully decorated and has a pleasant atmosphere. The beer and cider we ordered wasn't the best we've had, however this was our only complaint of the night. The food was really tasty, freshly cooked and a good helping. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The bill was really reasonable. The menu has a good choice of Italian dishes and pizzas as well as a wide English menu as well. We had read the reviews and went in anticipation of a pleasant evening. The waitress told us to take a table! then left us alone for 10 minutes before offering us a menu. We selected 2 starters and 2 mains. 45 minutes later we still had no food. The starters were Avocado vinaigrette and salad caprese (2 minutes to prepare). The table next to us had been sitting for longer and only three out of five pizzas arrived together. My wife and I left, with two, by now tepid, white wines on the table. The only waitress was outside walking a dog on a lead. She was very apologetic and told us two staff had not turned up that night. Might have been OK had she explained that early on, offered some bread or olives to nibble, but nothing for 45 minutes. I have never walked out of a restaurant after ordering but that was the only sane response.

We visited this restaurant for the first time with family and were a bit apprehensive when we arrived and found only one couple eating here on Saturday evening. We need not have worried, the food was good, well presented and hot. Whilst other guests arrived later it was not busy for a Saturday. It did not have the usual atmosphere you associated with Italian restaurants but non the less we enjoyed our visit. We would not hesitate to eat here again.

We went here for a family meal recently as we fancied a proper meal in a nice restaurant rather that in one of the numerous chains in Castleford. Despite the restaurant being quiet - no doubt due to it being Mother's Day the next day, it was a very comfortable atmosphere and a lovely environment to sit and enjoy a family meal. I was wary of the fact that both English and Italian options were on the menu as in my experience both cuisines suffer when this is the case however the food was excellent - our table ordered pasta, pizza and an English dish and I sampled all for future reference in case we returned and all were equally good. The desserts are beautiful and the drinks prices reasonable so all in all I would highly recommend this restaurant for any type of occasion. It's a shame so few people know about it.

We visted here on a wednesday night a few weeks ago. Very nice decor and some nice features in the restaurant. Waitress was very friendly and the service was very good. Nice to go to an Italian restaurant and have an actual Italian chef. Me and the Mrs had Calamari, Antipasto and Bruschetta for starters to share and then we shared Penne Pollo and a Pepperoni Pizza. Food very good, especially the Bruschetta and the Pizza which had loads of tomato sauce and toppings. We had two good bottles of Pinot Grigot which were £9.99 each so cheap compared to other restaurants. I would say its very good value for money as they also offered 2 main courses for £10.00. Mr and my wife will be definately going back again in the near future especially as its the only real authentic Italian restaurant in Castleford. I have given the place a 5 out of 5 based on service, food and value for money.

Not surprised this restaurant has closed. They describe their cuisine as fine dining but they obviously do not understand what fine dining is. Slow service, dreadful pizza with undercooked dough (how come they can't produce a good pizza in an Italian restaurant?), tough chicken, lukewarm vegetables. Poor choice for vegetarians.
