I am not really keen on tripadvisor, but I am writting this review now for the main reason to warn people away from this pub. When me and my partner visited for food for the first time we had an atrocious experience, after waiting for almost an hour at the bar for our table to be ready in the dining room, (even though we had booked and arrived on time). The beer at the bar was ok, I had a shipyard ale and my wife had a gin and tonic, or should i say just tonic. They splashed a couple drops of gin into a tiny little glass and poured a double shot of tonic on top. After finaly making to the dining room, which was a crammed as a clown car, I couldnt even hear my self think, never mind being able to have a conversation with my wife. We were greeted with rude and unhelpful staff, not helpfull with food choices at all and constantly rushed. The starters are what some would call a joke, the portion size is fit for a newborn child, accompained with an unfresh tatse. For around £8 a starter this id ridiculous. The main course was luke warm at best and followed suit of the starters, unfresh, stale and tasteless. After complaining to the owner he gave us nothing but grief, he even came off as quite intimidating. We soon payed and rushed out of there to never return. I am writting this to help people decide whether to consider this as a nice place to go, and personally I would say avoid... there is an abundance of nice places local which trump this place.

Horrible food terrible experience; dining area was the highlight for a nice romantic meal however listing to loud pop music wasn’t. Starters are expensive and small portion, salad was dry and not fresh. Main chilli beef was beef jerky cooked within an inch of its life and covered in salt, turned to dust in my mouth, sent back for a udon chicken and it was far too spicy. I like spice but when your lips burn just eating it, it’s just unnecessary. Service was bad and their allergy advise was worse. Shipyard ipa was stale, flat and tasted off. A horrible experience. Avoid

The manager on duty was unprofessional and lost their temper when we had issues regarding the track and trace app, to which he started having a go at us unnecessarily. We felt threatened and left immediately. When we asked to speak to the manager regarding an issue, they just said that he’s not interested. We’ve been coming here fairly regularly but not again after this!In addition they haven’t been enforcing mask wearing when appropriate, even the staff need to learn how to wear masks correctly. Honestly don’t bother going.

I have no words for what happened tonight. The rising sun, a pub that I go into a lot. A pub that I give a load of money to. The way they treated me and my mate tonight was absolutely unnecessary. They discriminated against me about what I was wearing ( which was smart / causal ). I always wear a hat. Everywhere I go. I’ve worn a hat in the rising sun many many times but tonight was a problem for some reason. They gave me horrible attitude as soon as we walked in the door. They were horrible. I cannot stress this enough. That one bloke spoke to me and my friend absolutely horrible. I feel so unhappy. The told me to either take off my hat or leave. I’m absolutely disgusted from the way they have treated me and my mate and their attitude towards religion and disability. This is disgusting behaviour. Absolutely vile. I cannot stress this enough, the one bloke that spoke to us like that, he deserves the sack or a firm talking to. I feel harassed. I feel horrible. I feel like crying. The way we were treated tonight has no excuse. Absolutely no excuse. I will not be returning to the rising sun Thame and I do not recommend it to anyone.

Ordered a few bits from the Rising Sun, this evening, first of all they got my order wrong. Secondly that's the worst Thai food I have had. It was no better than the local Chinese. The Thai place in Covered Market, Oxford is much more authentic and a 10 times better than the Rising Sun.

Excellent all the way! The staff couldn’t be friendlier or more helpful - shout out to our waitress Ruth who was fantastic- she knew the menu inside out and was good fun whilst being completely professional. The food was superb - very tasty, lovely fresh flavours and clearly good quality ingredients. They were incredibly busy (eat out to help out night) and every member of staff was clearly working their socks off without getting stressed and keeping all the customers happy. I can’t fault this place! Thanks for a great evening.

Typically I like Thai food and the Rising Sun does it well with good service and quality . I decided to come for Thai tapas by ordering a range of starters . We thought we would have something different as a Christmas Eve lunch and so headed to our nearby Thai. The main restaurant area was bedecked for parties later on and so we were in the ante bar, basically the corridor to the loo. Hence 4 stars. Though a simplified lunch menu the fishcakes and prawns were particularly good. And the Brakspear is excellent beer (though not Thai!). And very friendly and good service. We have been to Pad Thai previously in the evening and the greater choice dies make that the better option. But excellent value whenever!

Started off well, phone answered quickly and food ready in 15 mins. Lovely. However, the fishcakes were very rubbery and whilst the mixed veg was cooked nicel, the sauce was very watery and a bit bland. Pad thai was a very mixed bag of odd flavours, an almost solid lump of noodles and just a mush of nothingness. Won't be going back, shame as it promised much! £23 for 4 prawns, 4 fishcakes and two small boxes of noodles and veg was very expensive.

My husband and I were staying at Long Crendon Manor and this is a short walk from there. It was busy for a Wednesday night, always a good sign, and we were delighted with the meal and the service. We had a sharing platter to start with chicken satay, pork skewers, pork dumplings, crispy seaweed with a selection of dips and prawn crackers, all beautifully cooked and presented, our mains, chicken stir fry and Thai green curry with pineapple rice were equally as good and plentiful. Our bill with a drink each came to £40, excellent value. Very pleasant locals who are clearly regulars also indicate a great place to eat.

We visited the rising run on a Friday night, with a booking at 8pm, being in Oxfordshire for the weekend. It was busy and clearly a popular place for the locals. We were seated and had a drinks order taken. Within a few minutes our order was taken - a curry each and a pad Thai to share plus a side of rice. The first curry arrived within 5mins, before we’d even had our g&t’s. there was then a short wait before the rest of the food arrived. To be clear, this restaurant is a “small plates” kind of place - where you’d order a starter and then 2 dishes pp to share , or maybe 3 dishes Each if no starters. This became apparent when we looked at the tables being served around us, with numerous sharing dishes. Having ordered just prawn crackers , our curry each and pad Thai to share wasn’t sufficient as the plates are small sharing portions.I wish the waitress had let us know as we ordered, but instead rushed us through and generally just made us feel like they wanted us in and out as swiftly as possible. We ended up ordering 2 puds because we were still hungry after the mains. Nobody goes to a Thai restaurant for the pudding. The food was good (vegetable jungle curry to be proceeded with caution - v spicy, whilst the chicken Penang was mild rather than moderate heat). But the rushed service let it down as well as the lack of friendliness and guidance from the waitresses. As a pub, we returned to watch the football on the Sunday and it was really nice.

This is my second visit to The Rising Sun and even though it was a Tuesday people that hadn't booked were being turned away as it was so busy. The food was good and not bad value. Service was good too. My one gripe is how they cram in so many tables. We were dismayed to find we were seated at the same table as the previous visit. It's crammed into an alcove with the barmen now right next to you thanks to the gold fish bowl like window. In order for my friend to sit down the diners at the nearby table for four had to get up and push their chairs right in and stand to the side as it's impossible for anyone to be seated at our table without disturbing those next to you. You then spend the rest of the evening with those dinners sat with their backs up against you; hearing every word of their conversation (and presumably vice versa) I know if I went with my partner he'd refuse this table and given the chances of another being free we'd end up leaving. I can understand that they want to get as many dinners in as possible but this does spoil what would otherwise be an excellent visit and how it's not a fire risk I'm not sure!

The than green curry was presented without rice or noodles. We were the last customers of the evening,, arriving there at 10pm. We asked if they were still serving and they said yes. However, they were clearly keen to leave, cleaning around us as we ate, and hovering to pounce the second we finished. A shame because the food was good, if a little expensive (our bill was £275 for the 8 of us), and the service at the table also good. The evening was spoilt by issues with the beer and with the bar staff. Our group are keen on real ale, I like most well kept beers and am a CAMRA member. The hand pump beer when we went was very poor - old, stale, and just about undrinkable. This for me was not in itself a big issue - any decent pub will change a poor pint on request and this would have been a satisfactory result for us. Sadly the bat staff refused to exchange our pints for lager, a decision which was a poor one for us, and for the restaurant. I hope that they take a more enlightened approach in the future.

First visit to the Pad Thai sat in the back of the pub in the conservatory restaurant and had the mid price set menu. It was realy good with five starters mains and a pud. Service was friendly and attentive and prices very reasonable. The curries had a bite but were not too spicy hot to over power the flavours.Definitely be going again.

I have eaten here many times and the Thai food is always excellent and not as expensive as some. The service is very good and unusually for a Thai restaurant you can get a good pint of real ale, along with all the usual drinks you might expect. They also operate a good takeaway service. It is basically a traditional old pub with a modern restaurant at the rear. I thoroughly recommend it

The rising sun is a proper old inn that serves an excellent quality and choice of Thai food, topped off with great service. Wether you choose to eat in or Take-a-way the quality of the food is fantastic and consistently so. Over the last 10 years we have enjoyed brilliant, flavour packed, fresh , quality food with great service.

Great Thai food and have been here often - the food is delicious but the service wasn’t great this time and we had to wait 50 mins for our starter but once we reminded them we were served quickly - again another delicious meal

During a kitchen refit I spent about 6 to 8 weeks having lovely takeaways whilst visiting here about 3 years ago, so I had no hesitation popping in recently. The service was great, but the food was spoilt by the amount of oil in all the dishes?I literally could see the meal shining under the light. The taste was ok but after trying to eat it I started to feel very ill due to the spoonfuls of oil I was digesting.Maybe I caught the chef on a bad night but I will be in no hurry to return. Shame!

We had dinner here last night. Normally we go for the easy option of the set menu, but decided to go "off piste". Good plan! The food was delicious - we loved the corn-cake starters, the staff were friendly and attentive. After our meal we moved into the bar area for a drink. It was busy, but had a lovely "local" feel.

We have eaten traditional red and green curries here and my husband says they are amongst the best he's had after years of travelling the World and eating Thai cuisine wherever he goes. On this occasion we had the grilled sirloin steak and king prawns in red curry sauce. Beautifully presented with fantastic taste. The staff are friendly and the food is great! Don't miss this one.

The rising sun is a cosy pub easily located and very accessible in Thame High Street. At the rear of the bar is the Pad Thai resteraunt. The Food is excellent and the staff are very friendly. The acoustics of this room mean that if it is full it can be somewhat noisy. Especially if ther is a table of 8 or more. On this visit there were 2 very large parties with virtually no other tables in use. T he net effect for our party of 4 was that we could hardly hear ourselves talk over the general backgound of 30 odd people talking. We experienced this once before with an office group at Christmas enjoying themselves but making a din. Whilst I would not wish to be a kill joy the management would be wise to alert guests at the time of reservation that they have very big party in to give the option of choosing a different evening or table in the Bar area.

We had a takeaway from here. A lot more expensive for a takeaway than we would usually pay (£21.95 per person set menu) but the food was great. Only when we collected the food and got home (20 minutes drive) we discovered that the dessert part of our set menu order was missing. Disappointing for the price we paid

We ate here whilst visiting family that live near High Wycombe and did really enjoy the food! The restaurant itself is in a small pub, I wasn't so keen on the bar bit at the front but the restaurant around the back was quiet and decorated nicely.I ordered the pad thai and spring rolls and really enjoyed it, the rest of the family really enjoyed their meals too (and they've visited a few times since). Even though we arrived about 9pm, food quality was still great and served quickly. It's maybe not as authentic as other thai places we have tried, but it's still nice! We then moved round into the pub bit at the front, it was crowded, loud and almost made me feel claustrophobic, so I won't be back to the pub itself but I'd definitely visit just for the restaurant!

I regret the money I spent in this place. I went with family and friend and the food is overpriced and we found a piece of plastic in the soup! The waiters were chatting all the time between them and placed our orders incorrectly, In the end they blamed the kitchen. Not a good attitude. The food portions are small and with bad quality for the pad thai. Was greasy, the coriander leafs were rotten and yellow and the flavours artificial. The only positive note was for the bar service and the great Pimms made by the bartender. Even if they discounted the price of the soup with the glitch, it's no worth it and will not go back for sure.

Good proper pub with a great Thai restaurant merged into one.The combination works well and creates a lively atmosphere. The food itself was fresh and as expected, full of good flavours with extra spice if you ask.I great remedy for a dull and wet day, especially as it's on our door step.

on Friday evening the rising sun was very busy , great atmosphere and the food was excellent as well . The range and quality was ideal and the service was friendly as always . Just one small point : they needed the table for a second sitting ( we dined early) and this had not been mentioned when booking . They were flexible but it should have been mentioned . No doubt I'll be back . their pad thai is ( as you'd expect with their name ) the best in the area , and the other dishes have flavour and a great balance of meat and veg . I always enjoy sitting in the old historic part at the front of the pub next to the bar - nice historic atmosphere

Called in on the 18th of June having travelled to Thame from Oxford for an evening meal. Most of the places we looked at in other villages on the way to Thame seemed to be shut or just doing carvery meals on a Sunday evening. But when we got to Thame the Pad Thai was open along with The Thatch which was a bit further up the road. The Pad Thai was air conditioned and has an extensive menu. We ordered the LAAB GAI, Chicken Salad, It’s described on the menu as “Supreme chicken minced and tossed with fresh mint, lemon grass, galangal and lime leaves with toasted ground rice. The outcome is deliciously refreshing hot and sour salad.”It’s rated at two chillies on the menu. We ordered the same for both of us, thinking we’d eat that and then see what else we might haveWhen it came out it was a very small dish of food, more like a "starter size". The food was terrible, the chicken was just heat, no subtle flavours at all and practically uneatable due to the heat.It was so bad that neither of us ate more than a third of the salad, we told them we'd finished and they looked surprised with what we'd left on the plate and told the waitress it was awful and just tasted of chilli heat and then we asked for the bill and paid for what had been brought to us and left.It really was that bad!!!

A traditional English country pub serving traditional Thai food, it shouldn't work but it does. What feels like a family run business giving a nice pub atmosphere and seriously tasty Thai food at a very competitive price. The service was friendly, efficient and informal in relaxed surroundings. I ordered the chicken tom yum and chicken Penang with sticky rice (as normal) I throughly enjoyed it and would recommend this establishment. As a package, they deliver exactly what they set out to, good food, nice relaxed atmosphere and reasonably price, hence the 5 stars.
