Osbornes at 68 Gillygate in York

Friendly staff, however, ordered a gluten free meal as a member of the party is coeliac. This was also communicated to the staff member who asked when ordering. This was the only place we ate out and all food at home is gluten free, but they have had a relapse approx. 24 hours following. I understand cross contamination happens but really disappointing as we chose to go here specifically whilst visiting York as its website says it specialises in gluten free. The relapse has been quite extreme so it’s slightly worrying as it must have been quite a significant exposure. She is still really poorly days later. Another issue was that when we ordered our drinks, the coffee cup was filthy, we just chose not to drink it as my milk jug came the same. This maybe should have been a warning sign. However, as I said, staff were really friendly and the cafe was generally quite cosy but wouldn’t recommend for coeliac.

Arrived for breakfast with our dog a few minutes before opening time on our weekend break in York. The manager, very kindly, let us in and made us very welcome. Fantastic, dog friendly, lovely food. Just what we needed. We will certainly return on future visits to this lovely city. Highly recommended!

I had a missed call from the number, when I returned the call I was greeted by an unfriendly woman who denied the called and was rather abrupt, stating it must have been them testing the line. Regardless, I’d like to know how they obtained my mobile number as it’s strange since i’ve never visited them or had even heard of them, something dodgey must be going on for them to end up with my data and personal mobile number! Can’t comment on the food, as like I I said I’ve never been.

What a great find! I visit York on a regular basis and like to try new places but I tend to be over in the Walmgate area around coffee time. On this occasion, however, I was on Gillygate when I spotted Osborne’s. Why did I go in? It was the Doggy Menu that caught my eye; I don’t even have a dog!😹 The interior is beautiful and very spacious with a range of tables and seating. I sat on a lovely settee with a low table near the window which was perfect for people watching. There is also a beautiful courtyard/patio area at the back of the property. Young families welcome and baby change facilities upstairs in the loos. The entrance is stepped and the loos upstairs so not suitable for wheelchair users. Lots of doggy things throughout-even in the loos! The menu was very tempting and I settled for a coffee and piece of gluten free rhubarb and cream cake which was as delicious as it sounds. I was actually spoilt for choice as there were several gluten free cakes; so good to have a choice! The lady who served me was lovely and very welcoming; great service. I will definitely be back!

We had a lovely lunch here that provides for coeliac as well, making my daughter happy, especially with the range of cake choices available. Was especially nice to know next time we can being our dog with us as the cafe is dog friendly. Friendly staff and lovley relaxed atmosphere. Will be back soon.

Yesterday Osbornes on Gillygate catered for our wedding. They provided an exceptionally delicious buffet with plenty of gluten free dishes all labelled up. I was spoilt for choice. Other dietary needs of our guests were also catered for. They also made an amazing delicious gf wedding cake. I highly recommend them. The staff looked after us all so well and made it a very special day.

First time I've been in order a year and great to see nothings changed. Great food, friendly staff, and amazing cake. Cafe is really dog friendly too. You can tell dogs are allowed because the owner genuinely likes dogs. Been lucky enough to meet Viv's puppers on a few occasions!

Lovely little cafe - fantastic food and service and very dog friendly!

Ordered a dairy free red velvet cake for my girlfriend's birthday. It was freshly baked and ready within two days. Very tasty, my partner was over the moon with it. Felt really take care of with allergens, and the communication was fantastic. 10/10 recommend ordering from Osbornes.

Not only is this a fab lunch spot, Osbournes offers Cakes made to Order. Viv baked the most stunning cake for my partner’s birthday. We discussed flavours landed on cherry and coconut (his favourite) with real cherries in the sponge. What’s more it, was gluten free and no one at the party believed it! It went down an absolute storm Thank you so much!

Have been several times and usually enjoy the food. I asked for a big vegan breakfast without the sausage (I just didn't fancy it) but asked if I could swap the sausage for mushrooms, I said I was happy to pay full price because I was being picky. I was told this wasn't a problem. When food came the avocado was brown and tasted vile! and I only had 1extra mushroom. Didn't want to complain as there was only one young girl serving the entire place and didn't want her day to be any worse. We had to wait ages to get a second drink and later I was choking and asked for a drink of water which never arrived! The bill came and I had been charged £1 for my extra mushroom and had to point out that, that was really very cheeky and the girl removed it. So I ended up paying £12 for 1 slice of toast 2 mushrooms half a small tomato 1 tiny hash brown a handfull of beans and some rotting avocado. Disappointed to say the least and it was so cold inside the cafe, it took me all day to warm back up again. Just a side note, my friend and I have joint issues and a hand rial to help you in the front door would be awesome, thanks

Went for brunch on Saturday and liked it so much we went back for breakfast on Sunday. Super breakfast, lovely service, and dogs made very welcome.

Wonderful dairy free Victoria sponge cake. Tasted fresh and home made. Far superior to what I tend to bake at home. Staff were very friendly, smiley and welcoming.

Great little dog-friendly cafe. We visited last year when in York and headed here again this year. Coffee & cake were great and our dog loved his sausage and egg from the doggy menu. Very friendly service and a fuss was also made of our dog which he loved 😀

Me and my husband come here every time we have a free lunch together. I love the people who work there, we have never had a bad meal or drink and I love the vibes with the dogs everywhere!

We came here for lunch today but I've been several times before. Our little dog really enjoyed the sausage from the doggy menu and we both loved our main dishes and cake. I'm gluten free and was pleased that the entire menu can be made GF if requested- this is rare in restaurants, especially with such a varied menu! Most of the cakes available were GF and several were vegan too, which is cool that everyone is provided for. I tried the lemon and rose meringue cake and it was gorgeous, albeit a bit dry (standard for GF cakes)- thankfully they served it with plenty of cream and lemon curd. Delicious! We'll definitely be back, I can see it becoming a regular lunch spot for us!

This is a lovely, super accommodating café. The staff were really friendly, gave a bowl of water to our dog, and assured my coeliac friend that they try to minimise all gluten items, including not putting any gluten items into the fryer. Food was great! I had a roast pepper quiche (pictured), my coeliac friend had a gluten-free burger (she said it tasted just like the real thing), and another of our friends had a leek and potato soup. All the portions were larger than expected, and very filling, which is a shame as the cakes looked lovely! Would highly recommend :)

Really nice people but the food wasn't very good undercooked sausages and just an unenjoyable breakfast. Club sandwich wasn't good the bread was dry and fell apart whilst I was eating it

Disappointing second visit. We came here for breakfast last year and it was wonderful. So good I ordered the same - but unfortunately it was not a patch on our previous visit. I ordered the club sandwich, which last time was on lovely thickly sliced fresh bread, and was actually so filled with crispy bacon I couldn’t manage the whole thing and had half wrapped up to take home. This time it was a small dry bread roll with one piece of rubbery bacon. I had to leave the outer pieces of the bread because it was so dry. The chicken on the sandwich was also rubbery, I suspect it had just been microwaved to be honest. It was served with crisps that were soft (I didn't eat them at all because they were unpleasant). It was such a let down after enjoying it so much the time before. On a positive note the coffee was good.

Super Dog friendly café. The staff were incredibly welcoming, gave out dog a blanket to lay on and a water bowl. We had a separate menu for the dog. The food was fantastic, and the selection of drinks was too. Highly recommended.

Really lovely lunch here. The service was excellent, very friendly and enjoyed our food! The portions were large and we all felt nice and full after. I also loved the fact the place is light, airy and doesn't feel too cramped. Thoroughly recommend here for lunch.

Usually good and food has been enjoyable in the past ok for a while. Today however food was Inedible. A real shame.

A lovely place, really cosy, fresh and welcoming. The only criticism I would give is that from the outside the lights inside looked off. All the staff were so friendly and professional. It was testament to the environment established that us holidaymakers and people having an informal business meeting could all feel they were in a space that would be right for their needs. The food was great! We had breakfasts (1 vegan). Refreshing to see young people being gjven the opportunity to creatively manage such a place.

Lovely Sunday morning brunch. The coffee is great and my rhubarb and ginger cake ( with cream) was delicious and filling. The breakfast my husband had was perfect, good local produce by the look of the sausages. The service was excellent and very friendly. If the weather had been more predictable would have sat in garden. Especially Dog friendly with their own menus and bunting.

Called in today with a friend,lovely friendly staff . I had the chicken , bacon salad it was a good portion. My friend had a spicy wrap. Also reasonable price.

Osbournes is our absolute go to for Lunch in York, it has a gorgeous hidden garden at the back where we were watching beautiful birds fly in and out the birdhouses. The food is always amazing, as is the cake! Such a gorgeous gem of the city. There are vegan options too.

Delightful little cafe. There's a lovely garden, but it was too damp and chilly for us. They catered for ouf granddaughter's birthday (ages 4 to 95!) and provided the "Frozen" cake. All delicious, not expensive, and all of the staff were very welcoming.

Nice outdoor seating area out the back to enjoy the sunshine. Really good vegan options and good coffee.

Visited here recently on a day trip to York. Staff were very pleasant but we had mixed reviews on the food. I was asked if I wanted to upgrade to chips with my meal, said yes and still ended up with crisps, no idea whether I was charged for the upgrade as I didn’t get a bill breakdown. Also ordered a fish finger sandwich which consisted of two relatively small fish fingers on a bun and it didn’t come with any mushy peas. A lady kindly got some for us but they were stone cold, unfortunately. The cakes looked good but I’d be reluctant to visit again for lunch time meals.

Super friendly, cosy atmosphere, very reasonably priced considering all their delicious cakes are homemade. Earl Grey tea and cake for 2 seated outside in their deliightfully quaint courtyard was the perfect ending to our lovely stay in York. Would highly recommend 👌

Top notch service and food. Highly recommended for both meat and veggie breakfasts. I ate here for two successive days with a group of friends due to it being so good. Despite being busy (understandably so), the service was fast, efficient and friendly. The veggie sausages were the best I’ve eaten, and the scrambled eggs delicious. Also a wide selection of exquisite cakes that can be taken away. I love that dogs are welcome in the cafe too!

We did get brown bread instead of white & the poached eggs were hard

The cafe itself is beautiful with nice service however the food.. We ordered vegetarian breakfast. The vegetarian sausage didn’t look appetising and didn’t taste good. We also ordered fresh orange which the waitress promised it’s fresh but it wasn’t.

Very reasonable and tasty. Really enjoyed grabbing lunch here.

We popped in and we got a coffee table to sit at and we had terrible service from the “Karen” who is behind the counter. My sister in law bought an appletiser and we hadn’t decided what we wanted so we though it would be a quick sit in and leave. We had small cross body bags so we were all carrying a small water bottle. I was thirsty so I took a quick sip and she somehow came around the corner to tell us we couldn’t drink our own drinks. Fair enough - but it’s just water for Pete sake. Then she came around again to tell us we couldn’t have our own food in the establishment which we didn’t - literally just put away the cheesecake and forks from the bakery we just bought from. I understand it’s no Starbucks but just general service and politeness did not exist so we decided to just get the drink paid for and leave. What a shame. Hopefully your drinks and food is better than the “Karen’s” terrible attitude.

My friend and I sat in the pretty garden area and had a long and leisurely lunch. The food was great, service even better and everyone is so friendly.

I’m not one to leave reviews but this was the best breakfast I have had. Service was amazing and the dogs loved there breakfast as well. Will definitely come back when coming to York again.

Excellent service. Catered for me being vegan. Ate here with my 1 year old son and a dog, and they had menu items for them both too.

Ordered a gluten free vegan hot dog. Got back home to find it wasn't gluten free. Called up and they thought it was funny. Really dangerous, could've had serious effects on my health. The food isn't even nice. Said I could go replace it but the food doesn't look great and the hot dog is tiny. Luckily getting my money back but they should be much more careful with allergens. I would never go back there, even as a none gluten free vegan, as I would never trust they would take cross contamination seriously, or that they'd even give me a vegan hot dog. I've heard good things about this place on the vegan page but try Orinoco, The Orchid, Wawin, even Mr Chippy is a much better option. They all take allergens very seriously and would never laugh at this situation. And your response is to again, blame my boyfriend. You were laughing at me down the phone. My boyfriend DID request gluten free. In fact, it was the FIRST thing he asked for. Lying about allergens is not how you improve. I didn't want a replacement as you clearly don't take allergens seriously at all. Sort yourselves out and stop blaming your customers for your mistakes.

We went to Osborne’s for a breakfast takeaway, as we were leaving York after having a fabulous weekend. The lady in charge was very rude and made us feel like she didn’t want our custom! One of our sandwiches didn’t arrive, we brought this to the attention of the lady in charge and she made us feel like it was our fault! We had no apology.for the missing sandwich! Next time we visit the beautiful city of York, we definitely won’t be visiting Osborne’s as the welcome was extremely frosty……..the positive signage wasn’t reflected by the lady in charge!

I love this shop for the yummy cake. It has lovely sitting in the back garden. The drinks are well made. The cakes are why I come here often. The service is fast and friendly. They have wide selection of cakes that are displayed on the street window, so you can be easily lured in 😂😍. I recommend this place for a cozy, nice meeting with friends and family.

Excellent cake options at Osborne's 68 on Gillygate for our mid afternoon tea stop while pottering around the city yesterday. Only realised afterward that we had eneded up choosing vegan and gluten-free options which is testament to some damn good baking. Luckily it was still just about warm enough to sit outside in their pretty outdoor courtyard that was an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Loved this place, the warm welcome, the cosy outdoor area, the menu... and our dog got her own food and water bowls! The food was delicious, we really enjoyed the veggie hotdog and the goat cheese salad. We will be back the next time we are in York

Fantastic food, whether choosing Gluten Free or not. A huge selection of delicious desserts and great service. The garden is so peaceful it's easy to forget you're in the centre of York. Would definitely recommend!

A gem of a place in a busy City. A true rustic haven of calm. Food is superb, atmosphere just perfect and the staff are fabulous. Really feel like you are sitting in the Med with a cold beer in the sunshine a fantastic way to while away a Satuday afternoon.

Lovely little cafe, the staff were very attentive and ensured we had a great experience. The food was amazing with a great selection plus weekly specials. Highly recommended.
