A popular cafe opposite the Parkinson Steps of Leeds University. Coffee is good, service pleasant, gets quite busy.

I recently visited with my Daughter and we both drink soy milk. To my surprise they charge 40p for soy which makes two latte's £6.40 - a bit steep for a cup of coffee. We probably won't go back on this basis, especially given the amount of competition round the area. All the major coffee houses no longer charge for soy now (though I don't actually buy coffee from them), Caffe Nero used to but had to stop after being inundated with complaints. Given a carton of soy milk is 85p this is a bit much!

Coffee, made properly, is served by committed and charming staff. Definitely the best way to kick start your morning from that side of town!

Coffee ehre is great - lots of attention paid to making sure they use good coffee and also make it to the best standards. The food is the main let down though - nothing particularly special (in the past have had some quite dissapointing, bad tasting toasties) and very expensive. Small ~2x2" chocolate brownie comes in at £1.40. Staff can take a while too as the place is often understaffed.

So I'm probably being stupidly fussy, but if I order posh cheese on toast, or as was advertised a croque monsieur, I'm expecting it toasted through so all the cheese melts and certainly no cream cheese blobbed into the bottom of it. I wouldn't order that again. I did however really enjoy the flat white coffee and the bit of daal that my wife was eating. I'm willing to accept that the place is great, and I just ordered the wrong thing.

so vegan friendly! with really amazing choice of sandwiches and salads and actually good ones too. i had a mushroom pate sandwich which was so good! not had mushroom pate ever before and i was impressed. like having quorum pate or something! great coffee and good selection of teas. all the packaging is biodegradable and they're generally as environmentally friendly as possibly! apparently they have a vegan desert sometimes but they didn't when i went in.

Always come in to get coffee, it's the best around campus. Cakes are really great too. Can get very busy though and not always well organised, otherwise would have been 5 stars! Price is average/little bit pricey.

The quality of the food and service here in no way justifys the price. It's also a shock that a cafe that prides itself in being opposite the university, full of students, which could be a lovely working lunch/meeting environment has such poor internet - the wifi turns itself off every 2-3minutes. Ultimately, you can see what they're trying to do, and the coffee is occasionally fantastic, but there are better places nearby now.

Visited with my beautiful wife and daughter on the occasion of my daughter Tessa's graduation. Tessa seemed to be very familiar with this establishment , making great recommendations. The coffee is the best I've tasted for years and the Brie, and bacon on ciabatta was really tasty. Great ambience and excelent value Well done.

£3.10 for a not so large "large" soya latte is just too much! I need soy due to milk allergy and hate that I have to pay a lot more for it. The prices are already a bit steep to begin with. There's a male staff on most weekdays who also tends to burn the soya so I will check if he is there and skip it if he is. Other staff just aren't that friendly and the place is pretty grubby. I go here as friends often like to meet there, but I'm very reluctant now. I'll be heading to nero across the road where I can get the same sized coffee for £2.15 and they might not do fancy latte art but it tastes nearly as good.

I got to Opposite very often, the main clientele are students and university faculty, being that it's right across the street from Leeds uni. So expect a youthful, laidback and not too fussy atmosphere. The coffee is generally very good, however, I only find this when a female barista is working. The male members of staff seem to always over heat the coffee, resulting in a bitter and barely drinkable cup of coffee. The cakes and pastries are very good and early in the morning they have ample free samples for the taking. On a Saturday morning, sadly the whole cafe is taken over by middle age mums and dads and very often their children too, from the local park run. It really changes the atmosphere from student digs to weekend warrior baby creche. So avoid then unless you want to hear about people talking about the latest Coldplay song and their new pushchair. All in all, Opposite serves it's purpose as somewhere to grab a coffee and a quick bite.

Great food, always lovely soups and stews on the menu and the coffee is always good but the cafe itself needs a facelift. It's not particularly warm and welcoming but the food and coffee are good to take away. Service can often be a bit patchy and the tables are often not cleared/cleaned.

What a pity that arguably the best coffee shop in the city just cannot get it right 9 out of 10 times. On its day when you get a barista that knows what they are doing and the place isn't filthy and the queues aren't 20 mins long and the coffee isn't burnt or too cold...etc etc... then it's a good place. Sadly this is rarely the case and most of the above problems are always there. I have given up with opposite cafe and now go elsewhere for these reasons.Same old story, a cafe opens and tries hard to be the best then lets its standards drop and becomes rubbish. This is the opposite cafe. I would recommend you go elsewhere as its a spent force.

I visited here recently during my lunch hour and the place was packed, it was difficult to find somewhere to sit, and when we did the tables weren't clean. The coffee is great though - worth coming back when it's quieter.

Had an excellent flat white here which was prepared by a young guy who obviously took pride in his work. With a single server and heavy footfall, you can expect to queue for a while to get your coffee but in my opinion it's well worth the wait.

I always call here whenever I'm walking past. They do filter coffee usually roasted by Has Bean, which is great and is a very good price. The soups and stews available over lunchtime are very good value and are always delicious. Think it's around £2.50 for soup, and £3.50 for stew. Best place for coffee and food near the university!

I thought the coffee was average bordering on bad, rubbish was left on the tables long after people had left and the lady working was openly leaning on the counter and texting instead of doing her job. I don´t like that the cafe prides itself on eco packaging when it could avoid the use of packaging at all by providing eat in customers with actual ceramic cups. Additionally, the staff throw the cups and packaging straight into the waste bin afterwards. I dont think it counts as eco packaging if you dont recycle it after you use it.

Just popped in here for a quick coffee on my way home. It had been recommended to me by a friend, so I felt I should give it a go. I'm always on the lookout for independent coffee shops, being very averse to the horrible big chains - Starbucks and the like, who can't make a decent coffee to save their lives. The best flat white I've had in recent years was at a tiny coffee shop in Norwich called The Window, and the one I've just had today at the Opposite Cafe certainly equals that one. Will be making it a regular visit on my shopping trips in the future.

I have returned numerous times to this excellent cafe, since being spoilt by their coffee I have found no other compares, their coffee is simply how coffee should be and tastes exquisite. I have also enjoyed their porridge and yogurt. The staff are helpful and always friendly. I love this place.

A regular haunt during an extended stay in Leeds, the coffee was consistently good and the staff always friendly. The cakes are a little pricey, but lunch and breakfast items are more reasonable.

The Opposite cafe is located in a beautiful area of Leeds with some very nice high class shops near by. It is a perfect place to take a break and have a chat with your friends/family whilst shopping. Saying that the coffee is second to non. An amazing blend which is smooth and luxurious. 100times better than the high street coffee. Amazing care is taken with your coffee. First weighted and timed when the shot is made. The male Batista was very friendly and someone who you could speak to for a very long time about music, coffee, food and probably anything under the moon. The prices are in line with what you would expect in Leeds but the coffee is much much better than what you would expect from the likes of Costa, Cafe Nero, and Starbucks. I highly recommend the next time you want a coffee in Leeds take a trip here rather than going to your local chain brand. Much better tasting, support the independents, and very friendly staff. I wish I lived in Leeds so I could go there more often

My wife and I visited the Opposite cafe in the Victorian Quarter. Myself being a fan of coffee done right, I was excited to try the place after well-regarded opinions online.I ordered a latte and an espresso, and my wife not being a fan of coffee inquired if there was any vegan food options available and was told there wasn't, which was fine. The seating area was completely empty asides from ourselves, and as my wife had nothing to drink or eat decided to eat a snack from her handbag while I finished both my coffees. There were signs on the tables stating only food purchased at Opposite may be eaten there, which is fair enough, but as the staff member saw my wife eating the snack she came over and replaced the sign on the table with another identical sign, and walked away.Talk about passive aggressive - it's not my like wife didn't enquire just minutes ago if you had any food options available for her, which she should have purchased. It's not like it was busy and my wife was needlessly taking up a seat of another paying customer. After that, I finished my drinks and first experience of Opposite and vowed never to return. I honestly left feeling rather angry. The coffee wasn't bitter, but the experience was.

Opposite cafe is wonderful - their coffee is ten times better than any coffee you can get at Costa/Starbucks/Nero's etc. They do lovely cakes and sandwiches and salads too. There's always great local art on the walls and it's always packed. The staff are friendly and cheerful. The smaller city centre Opposite in the Victoria quarter does equally wonderful coffee.

If you like coffee the way it's truly supposed to be made then you'll like the opposite cafe. Using the best ingredients and equipment the espresso based drinks are top quality and set the stanard for coffee in leeds. However, frustratingly the standard of cappuccino/lattes served can range from michelin star to just okay depending on the barista making it and how busy they are at that time. Some of the baristas are real pros and some are average and this lottery can be annoying! The standard has slipped in the last few months but the opposite cafe still serves the best coffee in the area.

Used to be lovely but new owners don’t have a clue. Whilst the food is okay, everything else has gone down hill. Menu wise I’d suggest you advertise a quiche as a quiche, not a tart. You don’t stand a chance of hearing your party, the acoustics are shocking. As for the clientele it’s full of screaming and I mean screaming brats. So if you fancied a nice relaxing lunch with friends, I’d suggest somewhere else because it won’t happen. And the owners don’t care, that’s the sad part. Perhaps you need to advertise that you are more of a crèche than an overpriced cafe.

Called in for drinks, one weekend night out. I thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing, as I used to come here clubbing 20 odd years ago. Brilliant atmosphere & choice of drinks. Superb building too. Will be back again sometime soon hopefully ...

Buena comida, buena relación calidad-precio, gente encantadora a cargo, un entorno agradable, recomendaría totalmente el café BLT a cualquiera.
