Ophelia in Newcastle upon Tyne

The food was cooked well! However no flavours. I was looking forward to having a good eating experience, but alas! The Broth was a clear consommé with 3 large prawns and about 75 mls of soup! Served with a large tablespoon! Lemon sole cooked well, however no flavour The bread was lovely and the cheese plate, although minuscule, tasted good! Whatever happened to seasoning and chef’s tasting the food prior! Too much butter and sauces on the mains, why?

Went for Saturday Lunch, Steak Frites. Absolutely amazing! Will definitely be back.

Service was above and beyond- I dropped my napkin and it was replaced instantly and seamlessly. The food was great and presented well, particularly the oyster platter. Will certainly be back!

Lovely french food with great service.

Worth the 2hr trip up here for classic French Bistro food. The menu is small with choice of 4 starters, 4 mains and 2 desserts. But the quality and taste of the food is superb. Highly recommend 👌

Visited during restaurant week so our meal was sensational value at 80£ for 3 courses and a couple of drinks per person. Delicious food, staff were friendly, professional, and attentive, but not overbearing.

This has rapidly become our favourite restaurant in Newcastle (and probably the UK). The cooking is stunning - apparently simple (but actually immensely skilled). The wine list shows a real “foodie” intelligence as well - particularly good in lighter food-friendly reds. Add to this an efficient and friendly staff (who obviously seem to love working there) and you have the perfect place to show off Newcastle to friends from out of town.

Service was excellent. Wine was overpriced in the mid range of the wine list. Nice food. Seemed like the chef took a taste and put the same spoon back in whatever he was making, which put me off.

Have eaten here multiple times now. One of the best Sunday roasts in Newcastle. The steak frites are sensational value for money! Wines are top notch! Don’t even get me started on the sprouts and Comte mousse from the Winter set menu! 😮‍💨

How anyone can rate this less than 4 or 5 stars, I don’t know. The food is by far the best we’ve eaten in Newcastle and the staff are all brilliant. It’s a proper hidden gem that we are very lucky to have on our doorstep

The place is nice, there is a nice atmosphere and appears sophisticated, however only two stars because we had the king praws and one was not cleaned (has the black intestine), we pointed out to the waiter and they didn't even said "sorry", for that price we were expecting a bit more given that the dish was composed by 4 prawns and some mayonese. The mains were average and there was not much choice apart from meat and potatoes in different styles. We also tried the plaice but it was too buttery and you couldn't taste the fish properly. Desserts and wine were nice but for the price I expect more flavor and attention to details.

This review is for.Ophelia cafeteria I visited the cafeteria with a friend and ordered 2 coffees ( no food) which were good. My 3 stars are for the fact that 10% service charge was added We have eaten in the restaurant and was more than happy to pay the service charge added, but l have never ever paid service charge in a cafe for coffee only

A perfect example of a great neighbourhood restaurant. The wine list is fantastic and staff are always happy to recommend some interesting choices. Food and service are always excellent. Most importantly, it is obvious how happy the staff are to work there, really great atmosphere - highly recommend!

It's a French style restaurant with excellence in simplicity and I really enjoyed the Sunday dinner here. It's about £21 with all the trimmings. Unlike most places you also don't have to reserve weeks in advance. The mash potatoes were smooth, buttery and heavenly. The beef was perfectly cooked. The carrot was sweet and had bite. We went for the chicken liver pate and the moules marinière for starters but tbh you'll probably be full with just the mains. They were both great though. Excited to come back for the a la carte menu at some point.

Food and service were superb. Restaurant has been fitted our beautifully, there is a small bar area for cocktails before your meal. Great additional to Gosforth area, highly recommended!

Ophelia is a gem of a restaurant, we enjoyed impeccable service, superb food, and divine drinks. We started with a sharp well made and refreshing mocktail, followed by oysters paired with a natural and refreshing rose. We opted for langoustines and the pate with toasted brioche for starters both were extremely tasty. The lamb and duck mains were nothing short of divine, perfectly complemented by an unusual and beautiful red wine. The sommelier's expertise shone through as they paired each course with a wine that took the flavours to ethereal levels. It was a special occasion, and we were very happy with the value for money and portion sizes. Ohpelia has set a high bar and we can't wait to return.

Some of the best food I have eaten for a while!

Overpriced and average. Good wine and decor, but, food hit and miss. Dishes were delivered to the table at different times. That approach ok for Wagamamas, but you expect a higher level of service at a restaurant like this. Tomatoe and Tuna starter, simple, but lacking in precision and ultimately uninspiring. Cheese board meagre and served with what is best described as poppadom rather than biscuits. Plus point, the belly pork and specifically the sausage was very tasty. Biggest disappointment was the waitress staff. The main server particularly unhelpful and gave the general feeling that they didn't want to be there and more to the point they didn't want us to be either! Many better options available.

It’s about time!! Gosforth has a proper restaurant with good food,service…..the full package start to finish!! Can’t wait to go back!!

I have seen some mixed reviews for this place and I felt that I really needed to chime in with my experience. I booked at the last minute for a Sunday Lunch. The service we received was absolutely fantastic. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. I thought the food was absolutely delicious and I keep thinking to myself what excuse I can make to go back. Who can I invite this time? The decor inside is very trendy and clean. On a Sunday we had a starter, main course (sunday roast), dessert, glass of wine each, 1 soft drink, and service charge included. The bill came to a total of about £110 which was about £50'ish each with a tip included which I was more than happy to include. I thought what we had for what we paid was excellent. See you soon. Genuinely the best Sunday Roast I've ever had!

Good food, great service. Was a nice birthday treat.

From the moment we walked in for supper we were greeted by excellent friendly staff, such good service throughout the meal . Cocktails were fab. My main course was so tasty and each element well prepared. Dessert again was extremely good . Very impressed by this new place . Very well run. A very enjoyable meal.

We came out a bit disappointed with the food, especially the mains, which seemed very overpriced for what you get compared to the starters and snacks, which are more fun, interesting, varied and overall more nicely priced. Service, drinks and atmosphere were great.

Just what Gosforth needs! Visited on night 2 of opening weekend and given how poor hospitality seems to be at the moment I expected some hiccups however service and food was fantastic and we had a great evening celebrating my birthday. Sure, the à la carte is expensive for Newcastle but the table d'hôte menu was well priced as a cheaper alternative. Stand out dishes were the oysters, steak and Toulouse sausage. Love The Patricia and love Ophelia. Will definitely be back. Also shout out to the super friendly barman who chatted to us as we had an after dinner digestif at the bar. Vive Ophelia! Bravo team.

Having booked a month ago for a fun meal out with friends we were really excited. Having enjoyed our much loved local sister restaurant The Patricia many times and had only wonderful experiences we were really looking forward to our evening at Ophelia and we were not disappointed. Chris and the team were really welcoming on arrival with the option to sit at the cool bar or our table. We enjoyed delicious cocktails at our table. Although the staff were busy with the buzz of Saturday night service they were attentive whenever we beckoned them over. The wine list is superb. We had great recommendations from the Sommelier, her choices were spot on and the Chenin Blanc was excellent value. The food was of course delicious. Ophelia has raised the bar for dining out in Newcastle. We can’t wait to return!

I'm shocked at the terrible service my partner and I received tonight. Having booked in a month in advance for a special Valentine's treat, and having attended the sister restaurant The Patricia previously and had only wonderful experiences, I was really looking forward to the evening. When we were still waiting for our table half an hour after our reservation time, my enthusiasm had started to wane. We were seated with only slight acknowledge of the wait time (thank you for waiting, not, sorry for your wait, and no explanation), served our wine without a word, informed we should order vegetables with our mains as they didn't come with any, the dessert menus plopped in front of us without asking, and got to enjoy the show of watching the serving staff drinking together while waiting for the bill, which I had to ask for twice (service charge included of course), Truly gobsmacked.

Having booked a month in advance for Valentines dinner with my wife, and having loved the Patricia, I was excited. From entering to being sat was 45 minutes. Then another half hour to get food. Food? Better than Wetherspoons? The sourdough bread was good. Everything else was really very average. Overcooked for the most part and yet still a bit cold on arrival. Wine was way overpriced for what you get. The audacity to add a service charge without asking was hilarious. Wouldn't recommend, far better places in Gosforth.

Superb! Absolutely fantastic food, all the starters mains and desserts we had were perfectly cooked and so tasty! Lovely ambience, friendly staff and the Sunday menu was great value. Best of luck to them!

Lovely venue, great service and top tier food.

I had high hopes for this restaurant, having enjoyed Patricia, but I left feeling disappointed. The ambiance, decor and staff were a fine start, as was the starter, but the main course and wine list were very disappointing. I asked for a medium- rare fillet steak and was told "that's how we always cook them" i.e. no choice, but it was medium when it arrived, and slightly on the tough side. The red wine list contained no 'value' wines (the Crozes Hermitage I selected was £80, very pleasant but not an £80 wine even in a restaurant) and one of my favourite French wines, a 2015 Mas de Daumas Gassac, was marked up to £700! I won't be rushing back! To end on a more positive note, my wife enjoyed it.

A long dinner, very friendly staff, really good potential, no choice for how you would like things to be cooked (steak) and then a bit chaotic for pudding, didn't arrive, but overall, nice venue with a few teething problems which hopefully resolves soon.

Best steak tartare I have ever tasted! The chicken fricassee was delicious and the cheeses were a great mix of tastes and textures. I am so happy this place opened up. Cannot wait to visit again and try the other menu options.
