Opa Greek Taverna in Exeter

We had never been to Exeter before but the smell walking past drew us in, we ordered a halloumi gyros which was super authentic and filled to the brim. Highly recommend if you're looking for something scrumptious!

Needed a quick lunch today and stumbled upon this little gem! Who don’t like Greek hangover cure food?! Ordered a gyros burger and chips for £5.95 and I was unsure what level of food I was going to get but let me tell you I was surprised! The burger had plenty of chicken crispy edges nice flavour nice and tasty meat! The burger had fresh onion and tomato, and he made us a spicy tzatziki sauce on the spot! Bonus points for that! And it was all very tasty looks like to much sauce but actually perfect! The chips I thought were going to standard nothing fancy but in fine Greek style they were seasoned perfectly with a lovely taste and crunch but also soft n fluffy inside! Better then you’re average kebab shop chip I know! Look for a lunch takeaway it actually really hit the spot with authenticity and flavour! I enjoyed it a lot and for the price you won’t hear me complain about it at all! Service was excellent too really nice chap who made it inviting and welcoming in the shop. Today rating overall I would score it 8/10 because why not aye! It’s a little gem and it’s perfect!

Really good quality kebab best in town, lovely sauces would highly recommend for good price. Been a few times and never disappointed me it's on forestreet now as a takeaway service. Will definitely be going back.

Opa's Gyros 2 Go has replaced Opa Taverna which has now closed. The Taverna was an exceptionally good restaurant will really be missed. Visited Opa's Gyros 2 Go today, which has only recently opened, for lunch. Choice is limited at the moment but, we were told that there are plans to extend the menu choice soon. We chose a pork gyros with gyros sauce and a chicken gyros with tatziki sauce and, we both have to say, they were very tasty. Well filled, very good flavours and competitively prices. There is seating available. The venue is fresh, clean and comfortable, as you would expect with a newly refurbished unit. Staff are friendly and welcoming, just as they always were in the Taverna. We have no hesitation recommending a visit to Opa's Gyros 2 Go. We don't think you would be disappointed.

We really enjoyed our meal last night at Opa Taverna. The quality, generous portions & authenticity of the cuisine was really good . The waiting service was also informative & prompt with real friendliness. We were saddened to hear when we booked that it was their last night in operation.

Popped in for an early supper and had the early bird menu, delicious, I particularly enjoyed the beef stiffado, melt in the mouth. Would highly recommend but understand its been sold and will shortly be an(other) Italian, a great shame.

Had a fantastic meal here! Food was very authentic and delicious, atmosphere also really nice and staff were very friendly. I had feta in filo pastry with honey and almonds as a starter and chicken souvlaki as a main…both highly recommend!

Another excellent meal at this great place during a regular family visit. Simple but great tasting authentic Greek food in generous servings. Friendly and prompt but never rushed service. Would particularly recommend the baked feta/honey starter and the Lamb souvlaki. All this at a very reasonable price, so a definite 10/10.

Having looked at the reviews I took my family. I wasn’t disappointed, good amount of food and cooked well. Nice and tasty, definitely worthy of five stars. All four of us were pleased. If I lived in the area would definitely go back.

If you're visiting the area and looking for somewhere to eat but not sure where to go, I highly recommend checking out this place! We visited as tourists from Wales and were absolutely amazed by this restaurant. The food was not only delicious but also packed full of flavor, and the portions were generous. The staff was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful when it came to recommending what to eat and drink. The restaurant's hand-painted decor showcased the love and effort that went into creating this place. From the walls to the handmade tables, everything was beautifully done. Impromptu night away, I have always wanted to come here but my husband is not keen on Greek food. Following advice from the friendly server we chose the mezze. We were not disappointed it was lovely, loads of food, tasty and well presented. Had to take some away in a doggy bag. Would definitely recommend and will be returning.

Absolutely delicious! Very nice staff and atmosphere. The food (especially the lamb souvlaki) was cooked to perfection. We also had a Greek salad as starter, and I couldn't believe how full of taste the vegetables were at the end of November. Will definitely be back! Next time I need to leave space for some dessert.

Excellent food, great atmosphere, brilliant staff

We regularly go for a restaurant date at least once a month around Exeter and in 3 years + of making that a regular thing….. Opa delivered THE best experience! First time visit, 7:30 booking, greeted by the young son who was serving tables, he was a little nervous (just a teenage thing) but he had no need to be because he was polite and so welcoming to us and all the arriving tables around us. We opted for a starter each. 1 x Greek Meatballs and a portion of Pan Fried Prawns, in under 10 mins we were enjoying both starters which were red hot, straight from the pan and absolutely delicious. Enjoying the house white wine at a very reasonable £16 a bottle, our plates were cleared promptly and the restaurant filled by 8pm with a mixture of obvious regulars, families, couples and a couple of large family groups. The atmosphere was so good. With mains turning up promptly we tucked in and we couldn’t fault a single item. I had the mixed grill and my partner opted for a seafood option. Everything was absolutely gorgeous. We can’t wait to book again in January and will definitely make the most of this restaurant for future family events.

First I will say I am a regular at Opa and there are good reasons for this. The quality, authenticity and tastes are outstanding. Over the years these attributes have never faltered. 0 Opa has always delivered on every level. The house red is my drink of choice. It is different every time but there is no doubt that the owner has an eye for extremely good wines and they come at a great price. As I have said in previous posts the atmosphere has a genuine Greek feel to the restaurant and, as always, everyone there are welcoming, friendly and helpful. Today, Natalie was not there, in her place her son was serving and I must say everything was to the same standard we have always experienced. It goes without saying the meze was delicious, as always. Please give Opa a visit as I believe you will discover a real treat!

We came with friends, (who had been before and loved the food), for a quick pre theatre dinner. As we were early we took advantage of the early bird special, 2 courses for under £20. We were warmly welcomed and the menu explained to us, drinks arrived promptly. I had garlic mushrooms to start , which were really yummy - a tiny bit of bread to mop the sauce up would have been nice. The star of the show was the vegetarian moussaka, one of the best I have ever had, and nicer than the one I had recently made at home, this was a perfectly sized portion with lots of delicious topping. The other 3 in our partly were equally impressed with their meals. Would love to return again when I'm next in Exeter. The restaurant was busy, but food served quickly and no delays.

Fabulous welcome by Natalie. I just wanted a quick meal for one being here on business and not fancying the hotel food !!! I had lamb souvlaki… absolutely delicious… perfectly cooked pink the way I like juicy lamb. No fatty sinew. So lean , served with salad, pitta and tzatziki with home made fries. What’s not to love ❤️ xx

My partner and I were blown away with the friendly atmosphere and the amazing food. Natalie our host was so lovely, and very helpful. Food was beautiful and freshly made. Lots to choose from the menu it made it difficult to decide as wanted most of it. We will definitely come here again so qe can do the menu. Great place to come as couple or with group. If you live greek food and imported greek drinks this is a must to place to go.1

We had a family meal at Opa this evening. We arrived close to 6.30pm and were immediately told we could order from the early bird two course menu. With a choice of about 8 starters and main courses I can honestly say I wanted it all. Excellent choices all round. Between the 6 of us we ordered an array of starters and all were great, really tasty and large portions (the Greek salad could easily be shared with another). Four out of the six of us had chicken souvlaki. Again really good portions and very very tasty although I was slightly jealous of the Stifado which looked and I gather tasted fantastic. Overall I would highly recommend this restaurant. Great service, superb food and very reasonably priced. If I'm in Exeter again I will return.

The lady running front of house was brilliant and the atmosphere was good (they had a special running for first part of their evening and so restaurant was half full), marking it 3 stars as the food wasn’t great. Largely under salted / seasoned unfortunately.

On a brief visit to Exeter and needed a bite to eat. After a quick look around Opa Taverna was selected. It did not disappoint. On an overnight stay in Exeter, we came to Opa for dinner. It has a real taverna feel. We opted for a selection of starters which left us completely satisfied. Everything was done to perfection and some of the traditional starters had interesting little twists which just added to the deliciousness. Greek classics with a difference, all served by a knowledgeable and very helpful waitress called Natalie. She took great care with my allergies without making me feel like 'a problem', which is what a lot of restaurants do. She even educated me about the prevalence of sumac allergy which I wasn't aware of! 10/10 all round and wish we could come back sometime. Thank you!

This taverna gives exceptional service. My daughters gave me a surprise Greek night in my garden and ordered lots of food from here. The chef went above and beyond to cater for us and everything we ordered was freshly cooked and very yummy. If I could give 10 stars I would. Well done Opa!

Ate here this evening. Had the dolmades (delicious), Greek salad (pretty good but more leafy bits would have been nice; also it was probably a serving size intended for two people but I enjoyed it all) and vege moussaka (also pretty good). Overall very happy with the food but this place has really terrible acoustics — hard walls/floor and no treatment installed at all — and it only took ONE noisy table for the whole place to be overwhelmingly loud and harsh. I left immediately after finishing my moussaka as it was just too much. Some absorbent acoustic panels on the walls would really help make this place be less harsh and more comfortable to dine in.

A fantastic place to go for a night out, the food was excellent as was the service, very friendly and accommodating. A beautifully furnished establishment, so clean and tidy and a pleasure to visit. Definitely will look forward to going back very soon.

Went in for a birthday meal and the food and ambiance were amazing. We had a starter and main each and were both too full to even contemplate a dessert! Service was friendly and very efficient, and the decor and music made you think you could have been back on your Greek holidays. Even had retsina, metaxa and mythos beer!

Great place for a family celebration. Warm welcome and friendly, helpful efficient service. Food, good range and very tasty. We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary with family and friends and Opa Taverna took the trouble to decorate the table which was really appreciated.

Excellent home-cooked, authentic Greek dishes served by friendly staff. Portion sizes are generous and there’s a good selection of Greek beers and wines.

We booked for a party of 10 at rather short notice and they fitted us in, the food was amazing and the service was brilliant, even though they were going through a rather harrowing experience at the time. Would recommend for anyone thinking of eating out in the area.

Food was really nice and reasonably priced. Early evening men 2 courses for £15, good selection to choose from. Drinks and alcohol prices on steep side (£3 for a small bottle of fanta.) We have been to this restaurant twice now, the staff are lovely and friendly. The chef is amazing, the food is traditional Greek food, the best Greek restaurant we've been to in the UK.

Last minute booking (only contacted at 12 noon, received confirmation at 5) amazing considering there were 10 of us to accommodate! Friendly family run establishment, amazing authentic Greek and Mediterranean food. Well worth a visit, we will be back.

Been meaning to come and try this Greek restaurant. Highly recommended. Very authentic Greek cuisine and family owned. Customer service was top notch very friendly and helpful. Came here for a lads night and we all loved the food. Very tasty and they even had proper Greek and Cyprus beer (Mythos and Keo), both good beers to try. We ordered the calamari, saganaki, feta psiti, and loukaniko. Great starters. For mains the souvlaki and stifado, tasty but felt portion sizes could be bigger. And desserts... can't remember what they were, but good. If they could serve free bread, that'll make it VERY authentic (but we still got full haha), and their pitta breads are homemade. Will come again if I can.
