Onkar Indian Restaurant in East Northamptonshire

Wonderful takeaway tonight, only took 40mins from ordering to pick on a Saturday night too. Recommend the fish pakoras.

I found the Chicken tikka masala a little tough which was unusual and the sauce watery. The onion bhajees were under cooked in the middle and the peshwari nan was quite thin. The rest of the food was fine. I may try one of the special dishes next time, I went for the safe option this time which unfortunately was not to my liking.

Had dinner there recently with a friend. We hadn't made a booking but had no problem getting a table. The staff were lovely and very helpful. Great quality food and a nice relaxing atmosphere all contributed to an excellent meal.

I cannot say much as I always order same think lamb tikka, but every time I eat it it's excellent! Service is great and I presume all the food just like my favourite lamb dish. I go to Onkar regularly and always leave happy!

We hadn't been here for a few years during Covid etc and then their fire struck. The refurbishment has made it a modern environment as opposed to the usual tacky Asian vibe We decided to give it s try again this week and WOW! What a difference! The food is probably one of the best Indian meals I've ever had over many decades. The owner and manager is delightful and helpful, as was the young man assisting as the waiter. Food delivered promptly and served on warm plates, spotless cutlery and fresh starched/ironed cotton linen. The starter relishes with poppodums are the best ever and she left them to accompany the main meal, something other restaurants don't do. No background music thank goodness. The drinks are pub prices - £5 a pint (Cobra) and £5.50 for a large glass of good red wine It was fully booked by 7pm on a Tuesday! They do take-aways with free local delivery to surrounding villages. Can't praise it enough. It's now a firm favourite

I don't live in oundle but have driven past this restaurant for many years and always wanted to try it I finally did and it was worth it the best lamb tikka I've had in a very long time the lamb was fresh cooked to perfection and tasted amazing the staff were lovely and welcoming as well I'll definitely return

Had a really nice meal here. Service was quick and extremely friendly. Food was superb…one of the best Indians we’ve had in a while. Will return one day.

Popped I on the off chance (was attending a lecture in the Great Hall). Met with a smile. Clear they were busy but managed to fit me in. Quickly got me a Cobra pint. Poppadoms and pickle tray excellent. Served very quickly. Had main prawn Madazy (spelling?). Again speedy service. Great taste. Big prawns! Chapatti was massive. Medium price for mains.

Just excellent Indian food. Good serving sizes - we found 2 mains, a rice and a nan just right for 2 people. Friendly, efficient service too.

We've been here a couple of times. It's the best Indian we've had in recent memory, and the prices are absolutely reasonable.

Had a really nice meal lamb madras. It's a little hotter than I am used to but tasted great nonetheless. It's nice to see that a restaurant doesn't skimp on a lamb dish, it had plenty of meat. Highly recommend

A fabulous birthday meal. Indian cuisine is one of our favourites and this restaurant was fabulous. Beautifully cooked chicken tikka to start, followed by a gorgeous vegetable balti and chicken dish. Friendly efficient, service in a lovely restaurant. We will be going back for sure.

Really good food, great size portions, lovely staff

It doesn't matter what the food is like, you will be lucky to get through to them. The line is engaged constantly. I've been spamming the redial button for 30 mins. VOIP phone systems are £20 a month and they won't get one. So frustrating.

We were staying in Oundle and wanted to try somewhere new, having had a wander around town we decided on Onkar. We were made to feel welcome and the restaurant is light and airy. Staff were helpful and attentive but not so attentive we felt rushed. The food was delicious and servings were generous, so much so we ended up with a doggy bag to take home. We felt they had a menu that was extensive enough to enable a good choice but not epic that we felt overwhelmed having to decide. Honestly, the only thing wrong with Onkar is that it is too far from home to pop to, when we next fancy an excellent curry ... we may have to move closer.

Busy restaurant with great fresh tasting food. It's nice to visit somewhere where the spices can actually be tasted in the dishes. There's room for improvement in the starters as my sheek kebab and the paneer tikka came without any caramelised onions. They were ok but could have been amazing. Sooo pleased to be back at The Onkar! Ham & Sanita are always very warm and welcoming, the food and service was excellent.

We have visited Onkar before and had a good experience especially when dealing with a garlic allergy. However on this occasion we were told there wasn’t one dish on the main course menu that could be garlic free. Initially they were unmoving but then suggested we wait for the chef/owner who was out doing deliveries. He arrived back and agreed he could make a sauce free balti so it wouldn’t have garlic. When this came the sauce was also delivered on the side - complete with garlic. Fortunately we worked this out. The rest of the food was delicious, especially the naan. Sadly it was also incredibly slow with most other tables experiencing the same. It seemed they were struggling to cope with eating in/deliveries/take-aways. The waitress was excellent, dealing very well with a difficult situation.

We dined on a Saturday evening . It was very busy with the restaurant nearly full and many takeaways going on at the same time. This illustrates that the reviews are probably right. We are not great eaters of Indian cuisine but occasionally it’s a nice change. So it proved at the Onkar! We were greeted by a smiling lady and gentleman. The restaurant lady was very willing to describe each dish and reassured us they would season as we requested. The menu had a good choice of dishes and all very reasonably priced. Our starter of tandoori prawns were beautifully presented in an attractive and unusual way. They were very tasty and not too hot. We both chose different chicken dishes which were very delicious and full of delightful spices and quite mild as we requested. The portions sizes were very large with big chucks of chicken served with an attractive rice which was very colourful. Overall, we were very impressed with restaurant layout and lighting which had the right balance of being very up to date and comfortable with an air of good quality. Along with wonderful food, a super dining place.

Onkar you never disappoint! we had a fantastic meal last night.. the boys tried a recommended dish by the owner Ham…Chandigar chicken if you like spicy this is the one! My favourite is Punjabi chicken. The team always give excellent service, thank you!

Such joy! Such taste! I’ve recently moved here from Australia and high on my list was to enjoy a local Indian. And my oh my. What an incredible takeaway… from the classic butter chicken to the saagI aloo. I’m just so happy haha!!

We had a super meal on Friday. Surprisingly busy for 7.30 but the staff were pleasant and efficient. We had poppadoms with a very good chutney tray then my husband had onion bhaji which were good and plentiful. For our mains we chose chicken dopiaza, coconut rice and tikka mixed grill ( enormous portion.) The food was so tasty and good value for money, probably the best Induan we've had to date. Constructive criticism: sauce to go with Tikka dish would be good and lighting could have been dimmed a little. None of this detracted from the fab meal.

Coming from Manchester and the Rusholme Curry Mile tonight's meal exceeded anticipation. Put aside the ample serving the flavours were exceptional. Well done.

After reading the reviews, I was really disappointed with the food I received from Onkar. The onion bhajis were undercooked inside and the curry extremely watery with hardly any flavour. The rice however was seasoned well and peshwari naan was okay. I expected a lot more from this place but unfortunately will not be coming back as my first time here wasn't a good one at all.

Visited this evening to collect a takeaway, we have always heard great things about Onkar, but haven't had the chance to visit. Now they have reopened, we decided to treat ourselves and that we did! The food was absolutely fantastic! We look forward to dining in also for our next visit as even though the service was brief whilst waiting, it was very friendly and efficient! Just spent a great night enjoying good food and drink.served by very-pleasant attentive waiting staff. We ate from the al la carte menu. But on a previous visit enjoyed the mid week deal . Well worth a visit

Great food and relaxing atmosphere!

My wife and I visited whilst staying in a local hotel. We both love Indian food and we both enjoyed the food and there was plenty of it so make sure your hungry. We had Onion Bhaji and sheek kebab to start, followed by Chicken Dansak and Chicken Dupiaza with rice and Nan. in both dishes the chicken was very tender. Would definitely visit again if in the area.

Onkar have reopened their restaurant after the lockdown, they have done a brilliant job with the decor. We visited on Father’s Day and we weren’t disappointed… they were very busy but the wonderful Anna looked after us and the food was absolutely superb! Our 90year old father loved every minute of it. Highly recommend, well done the Onkar team!

This place has been here for years, but we have got into the habit of visiting this restaurant regularly as the food is great, good portion sizes and the Chicken Tikka is the best. All the curries are tasty and everything is reasonably priced. They have a mid-week deal too so win win. It is very much has a family run spirit to it and the food is home cooked. At the moment it is better than any place in Stamford or Peterborough we would highly recommend this place.

We love this place, every time we visit Oundle we come to Onkar. The staff and owners are so friendly and efficient. The food is outstanding! You won’t find better!! Highly recommend.

Visited last year, waiter a little unsure if the menu, samosas were delicious and came with a choice of dips and plenty of poppadoms, curry was good but chicken a little dry, I would like to visit again and try more of the menu.

We had a lovely meal - poppadums and onion bhajis were tasty, and the main courses were delicious. Best of all we’re the naan breads - nicest we’ve ever had. Definitely worth a visit!

This is my favourite place for a quick meal when on the way home even New year's eve found us a table and once again the food and services was spot on.

First ever visit on Saturday. Best Indian food Ive had for a long while. Definately going back again soon.

We've had a take away from Onkar a few times now and it's just not what you would call traditional. Everything is over loaded with artificial colours. The curries are all so dark, full of oil and pretty much taste the same. The rice comes in a multitude of colours no matter which you order. The onion pakoras are just heavy dough that have been over fried.

The food here is great - you will not be disappointed. Everything else is a bit unusual - the decour, the layout, the rather odd lack of staff quite a lot of the time. You do sometimes feel that you are in someone's home - but that might not be what you are looking for on an evening out. Prices are quite deceptive too - I went for a 'deal' promising three courses for £12 - but ended up paying almost £25! Were my 'extras' (one beer, two poppadoms and a naan) really that much? I could not read the scrawled bill and did not bother asking. Just worth nothing: ask before ordering and perhaps just go for takeaway....? Probably busier on Fridays/weekend.

Lovely place to eat, authentic food and the naans were perfectly cooked, curry was delicious and the atmosphere was very Indian. If you come to Oundle for a bite to eat I would recommend Onkar for a romantic meal or large parties, and recommend to come during the week since there is a 3 course meal for a steal of a price.

We have been living in Oundle for the last few months and have visited this restaurant to either eat in or collect a take-away at least once a week. The food is always delicious and the service is excellent.

We ordered 2 starters and 2 mains and I must admit they all turned up piping hot and not too long to wait! This Punjabi food was not as oily as a lot of Bangladesh dishes can be. This was quite refreshing and did not lay heavily on our stomachs all night.

Lovely food, felt a little rushed at the end of the end of the evening.
