Popped into Olivia’s for a coffee and a bite to eat. Informed of a wait on food due to a backlog. Agreed to wait. Food ended up taking longer than notified, and wasn’t notable either. The cafe staff were lovely but it seemed very obvious there was no manager around?.. they seemed very stressed and running around. Also, there was no music on in the background - it was very noticeable, the cafe was not even really full and when there was a lul in general conversation it seemed oddly quiet; not a great atmosphere. Also, for what I judged to be a 40 cover (at most) cafe, I think a 35 minute wait to expedite a fry up is a bit much to ask. I know it’s not a greasy spoon but hm, the ‘chef’ must be inexperienced. This place is in a great location, and is quite a nice little spot - and, as I say the couple of girls that served us were lovely and a credit to the business. However, they are being let down by poor management and they are having to face a bunch of customers and tell them there’s a wait for food because of problems in kitchen, as well as rushing about the place running food, making coffees, plating cakes and clearing tables. All these things need done, yes, but with only two people doing it - the service was slow. It’s unfair on your staff, and a poor experience as a customer.

We visited Olivia's on a Sunday lunchtime and had a pleasant time. We had our 2 year old with us, so were pleased to find a high chair available and plenty of tables to choose from (also space in the corner for the pram). There doesn't appear to be a kid's menu - that would be a good addition. However, we ordered a ploughmans and a sandwich and there was plenty of food on the plates to share with the little one. The ploughmans was particularly impressive - a good varied plate. I like that they halved the pork pie and scotch egg, and provided two kinds of cheese and two kinds of mustard. The olive bread was tasty, which I guess you would expect from an artisan bakery. My wife's first two choices of drink and also choice of bread were unavailable. Not a major issue - perhaps it's a Sunday thing with no deliveries? Overall, a nice place, well located near the minster. A good atmosphere, but not too over-crowded at the time we visited.

The plates of food that seem ubiquitous in most cafes these days (quiches, panini, toasted sandwiches) are served here too, large plates (with side salad and crisps or similar) and well filled sandwiches which makes this cafe good value. Tea is served in traditional tea pots with flowered cups and saucers, slightly in contrast to the more robust wooden tables. It is warm, comfortable and round the corner form the eastern end of the Minster, so well positioned. Service is a little slow but acceptable. There is bakery side ot the business and the loaves and cakes look very good - I might nip back to check that out soon. Overall, a fairly average sort of York cafe that I am sure could lift itself a bit higher.

Came in here for a bite to eat ( coffee & sandwich) around 13.20pm...went to the till ordered and paid, then went to sit down,10 mins later the waitress came with my coffee and cleared the table from dirty plates and cups from previous costumer but no sign of her afterwards to wipe de table so I waited and waited for my sandwich! 14.05pm (25 mins later) my sandwich arrived on a white bread when I specifically ask for their brown seeded bread as I don’t like white bread too much...the waitress apologised and asked if I wanted to be changed...I said no I will eat because I don’t want to wait another 20-25 mins for a sandwich to be made as I am very hungry! she left and no sign of her with cutlery and a napkin...no sure if she thought I would eat coleslaw and salad with my hands,so had to ask for that too! Disappointed with the service and had to eat something I didn’t ordered...I am sorry to say that I will not go back to this cafe and will recommend to anyone!

We called in because the window display of bread looked so inviting. It was a Friday in December so although York was busy this cafe wasn't full so we thought we would be able to have a quick lunch. We both ordered a sandwich and a coffee. Twenty minutes after ordering we were still waiting. When my sandwich finally arrived it looked fine because the bread was nice but when I started to eat it I was a different story! It was supposed to be a Christmas sandwich of turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce - £5.99!

This cafe has waitress service, but there was no menu on the table so we just had to ask the waitress what was available. I have only bought bread from Olivia's before, but thought I would call in for a coffee yesterday. Despite the fact there appeared to be plenty of staff on (some of them moving like zombies), I had a very long wait at the counter, and really wished I hadn't bothered. Looking round there were a number of empty tables, all piled with dirty crockery, which the staff appeared to ignore. I finally ordered a simple Americano, which arrived at my table looking 'muddy', and with no crema. It tasted even worse than it looked, and I eventually abandoned it. Poor value at £2.45. Sorry, I like to support independent traders, but there plenty of better places to get a coffee in York, and won't be visiting again.

We called in for cold drinks on a sunny afternoon. Unfortunately it took 10 - 15 minutes to bring a couple of bottles of soft drinks to our table. It was not busy so can't really understand why it took so long. If we had not paid 'upfront' we would have left.

Lovely sandwiches on their own sourdough bursting with well-balanced fillings served with salad (good mayonnaise) . Delicious cakes and good range of teas . I only had coffee there once and am willing to believe its weakness was a fluke .

Could be a lovely place, in fact I would have considered going back but for the poor hygiene! Cups and cutlery dirty and chips in saucers. Table was dirty as was the floor. It wasn't particularly busy either.

My Boyfriend & I stopped here whilst visiting York & had a lovely lunch. Lots of tasty options, including vegetarian options & delicious baked bread! The cakes looked amazing too but we were too full to try them! The staff were so friendly & helpful, I just felt really bad for them as they were obviously short staffed & really busy...they were doing a fantastic job though! The food took a little time to arrive, but we were in no hurry & it was worth the wait! I would definitely return & if I lived in York I feel like 'Olivia's' would become my local coffee spot :)

Excellent for a quick meal with plenty of choice of bread types, fillings and cakes. Very busy when we went there, but we were served quite quickly

Really great chippy. The large fish was massive. Its a bit pricey but otherwise ok. Not much waiting time depending on the day/time.

Incredible food and service! This was our first time at the Red Lion, we called in on a Wednesday lunch time as we were passing through the area, we expected decent pub grub, what we got was nothing short of the best lunch we’ve ever eaten! The garlic mushroom gratin is fresh, full of flavour and big enough for 2 to share! We then had the yorkshire puddings, one with beef, one with chicken - both were amazing. The portions are huge (they’re more than happy to give you boxes to take your leftovers home) the meat is very well seasoned and tender and the chips are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and seasoned perfectly - no need to add salt and pepper here! We will be back and we will be telling all our friends and family this place is worth the trip out … what a find! :)
