Really like Olive. It has a really chilled atmosphere which allows you to relax while lots of delicious treats trickle to the table to share around the table. The tagine as the last dish was my personal favourite. We are all looking forward to returning for another evening.

We've been to Olive several times over several years (at all of its various locations), and Jacqui is the most personable lady you could want to meet. The relaxed informality is one of Olive's USP's: the Tapas-style dining allows you go graze and chat simultaneously, which was perfect for this group get-together. Those who don't eat meat are well catered for as many of the dishes are vegetable based, including a rather tasty veggie Tagine. Space between the tables is pretty limited but, to be honest, part of our enjoyment is chatting to folks on adjacent tables - a bit like we've done on holidays to Greece and Turkey. Being a 'one-man-band', Jacqui does a lot of her food prep before she opens up as space in her kitchen is limited; however, food always comes out hot and tasty and the salads are fresh and delicious. If you're used to more formal, main-stream dining, Olive will seem strange on your first visit but if you're up for trying something different and broadening your horizons, then give it a whirl. Contrary to popular perception, the food isn't particularly spicy (though the meatballs packed a punch :D ), though it is layered with different spices. Oh, I should just say thankyou as well, to Jacqui for sorting a balloon out for our table, as I hadn't got time to do it. In summary: fancy=no, fun=yes; tasty food=yes, sociable= definitely...if you're not up for making new friends and chatting to strangers in proximity, don't bother! Can't wait to come back :D

I have visited Olive 5 times now and have never been disappointed, even when we have brought family for special occasions. To be totally honest, based on my visit to Olive in Belper, I have absolutely no idea where all of these excellent reviews have come from. It’s certainly possible that it was a busier than usual night, or perhaps they were understaffed, but I was incredibly disappointed with my visit. I had chosen the Olive to take my parents out to for their wedding anniversary, and I was so disappointed with everything that I wanted to cry. We managed to enjoy ourselves because of how laughably bad it was but that certainly wasn’t how we intended to enjoy our evening. We were greeted on arrival and our table pointed out to us, along with a menu that was written on a blackboard, which we were advised to take a picture of so we could look over it in our own time. After sitting down it took approximately 20 minutes for someone to come over and offer water for the table, we received this after asking for it a further three times over the course of about an hour and a half. The table (very closely) next to us did not seem to have the same problem, and were also offered a plate of vine-leaf wrapped rice. Although judging by the number of dishes they received that they said they hadn’t ordered, I’m not sure this was intentional. I’m also incredibly confused about the £2 corkage fee we were charged per person at the table. I was under the impression that a corkage fee was supposed to cover perhaps storage in a fridge of our drinks, or perhaps them being poured for us. However, we had to keep our drinks on the floor due to limited space. I myself had a soft drink, my brother some cans of beer, and my parent split a bottle of wine, so I’m not sure at all what this fee was being charged for at all. Perhaps for those of us consuming alcohol but certainly not soft drinks. The food is where it becomes truly laughable. As a table, we decided to order between us to share: vine leaves, meatballs, spinach flatbread, baked brie, chicken shawarma, tabbouleh, and a tagine. We were assured that this would be more than enough for 4 people. We were initially going to order a tagine each and a few plates to start, but each tagine was £20, and we were told one tagine each would be far too much so decided to order as above. The worst part of the experience was that each dish came out at approximately 15-minute intervals and were only large enough for one or two bites each, so you never felt quite satisfied. Although the ‘kitchen’ was in view and immediately adjacent to the dining area, I never could see or smell anything being cooked, although we did see a salad being shaken out of a bag at one point. The nicest dishes were probably the vine leaves (£8), and chicken shawarma (£12) although not particularly special. The spinach flatbread was undoubtedly the worst. I do not picture supermarket tortillas folded in half over some wilted spinach leaves and what appeared to be some melted red leicester cheese when I think of a Moroccan flatbread, but perhaps I am simply not well-travelled or cultured enough. The baked brie appeared to be a lump of brie that had been microwaved in a bowl and did not look remotely appetizing. The tagine was laughable. Again, when I picture a tagine in my head I think of a relatively thick stew with more than one ingredient, and full of rich flavours. What was presented to us at the Olive was some gristly lamb in a tomato flavoured sauce, with no other apparent ingredients than one sad apricot at the bottom of the bowl, for the grand price of £20. There is nothing to really say about the rest of the items that were ordered, not special, but not as awful as the other dishes described above. The restaurant is incredibly cramped, and not in a cosy way, it’s very difficult to pull your chair out and get anywhere, and you are essentially on top of the tables next to you. In total for 4 of us to eat a very disappointing meal (including the questionable corkage fee) it was just under £90. It is entirely possible this was a bad night for the restaurant, but I have been out off entirely, and it is not somewhere I would consider eating at again, and I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to anyone I actually liked.

Worst place to eat in Belper. No menus were offered. Not everyone can read the specials board on a wall, We were given a bill at the end which Expected us to pay £24 per person for one strip of pitta bread, 2 meatballs and 1 teaspoon of cheese. A bill of £384 with no drinks. I’m sorry but 1 bowl of cheese and 1 bowl of meatballs and a 1” slice of a pitta bread is not an actual meal per table of 7 adults. Empty water jug on the table and no drinks offered. I know it was busy but not everyone likes what is just dumped on a table to share. No food allergies was mentioned and I do have food allergies and luckily I know one meatball, one slice of pitta bread and a teaspoon of melted cheese would be ok but I thought a nice lamb tagine would appear but no. Never going back to waste money on bad food and terrible service. Terrible service was topped off with being shouted the owner Jacqui which ruined the special evening. I don’t think they can cope with a group of 15 split into two tables Best to Avoid there’s much better places to eat in Belper and better value for money.

This is fast becoming my favourite place to eat in Belper. I really love the relaxed, go with the flow vibe and the amazing food. Previously never a fan of salads, Olive has converted me, fresh delicious combinations of flavours, it's heavenly. What Jacqui does with beetroot is amazing! I am also gluten free and there is always lots of choice so it doesn't feel like an issue as it does in some places. This is not formal dining but this is an eating experience.

I'm pleased to say Belper has many great restaurants. This is not one of them. I was expecting something amazing based on the reviews, but what we got was not even remotely adequate. Authentic food was in short supply; supermarket pittas, olives, stale bread and desserts left me feeling like I'd just been to the local coop and bought a cheap picnic. "Flatbreads" consisting of a packet tortilla with some cheddar melted inside. Shop bought meatballs. I'm not even convinced they own basic cookery equipment aside from a microwave based on what came out of the "kitchen". The only redeeming dish was the lamb tagine, but this was overpriced and the accompanying couscous was poorly cooked. Expensive, cramped, terrible service, poor food, lazy. No thanks.

Jackie the owner is a gracious and well travelled host whose love for Morrocan food shines through with a simple but beautifully executed menu includinhlg veg, lamb an chicken tagines, falafel, a divine veg tart and gorgeous cranberry bread. Went to this little gem last night for my friends birthday and we couldn't be more impressed! The restaurant was warm and cosy, and the owner and waitress were welcoming and all around angels. They offered to bring a selection of food (after asking about allergies etc) and safe to say it was an impressive feast! It was some of the best food we've ever had! We had a full salad, falafel, baked brie, spinach flatbread, roasted chicken, and lamb tagine. The salad was crisp and dressed to perfection, with surprising bursts of mango and blueberry perfectly complimenting the salty feta and tangy dressing. The spinach flatbread was simple and comforting- definitely something I'll try and make at home now! And the falafel was so flavourful and moist- a true feat, and the baked brie really hit the spot. The chicken though, the chicken! It was so moist, marinated to perfection, and juicy and crisp- even the bed of salad it was on was dressed and tasty. The lamb tagine was decadent, lamb falling off the fork and the sauce truly tantalising- just the right amount of spice. There was nary a crumb left on the table after we feasted haha! The host should charge more honestly, because their skill is something rare to find. Thank you, Olive! We'll be back!

But the they seemed to have concentrated on quality rather than quantity. Food was very good and very tasty, the restaurant itself is quite small but very charming. The host and waiting staff were very engaging and I actually prefer an intimate place where people from other tables can chat to each other.

Perfect place for catching up with old friends, which is what we were doing last Saturday when we relived our time in North Africa. Food is very good (Berber chicken was amazing) and the atmosphere is unhurried tranquility despite the place being packed out. The owner/cook somehow manages to talk to everyone and is very welcoming. Bring your own wine was an added bonus and we certainly did (sorry for filling up your recycling box!). If I lived nearer then Olive would be my favourite place. Thanks for a lovely evening.

We managed to eat here last Saturday night although we hadn't booked - we were very lucky and got the very last table. I would advise booking in advance which is what we've done for our next visit. It is clearly very popular as every table was taken. It isn't very large but manages to fit in several tables all dressed with interesting pottery, china and glassware and the drapes and décor set the scene to help you imagine you are in a distant place rather than Belper Market Place. The owner is very personable and talked us through the menu and was able to make recommendations and tweaks to what we requested. She is also the cook and very good she is at it too. There is no licence so if you want alcohol you have to take your own which gives you a lot more flexibility and choice. The other point to note is that it is cash only so go prepared. We loved our food and are now looking forward to taking another couple with us next time.

Jackie is the most welcoming of hosts. A really good selection of starters and main courses. The flavours and overall experience of the food never fails to surprise. A very well priced meal for amazing home cooked food. Don't miss Olive when in Belper.

Love olive, Jackie always makes us feel special and familiar. We were one of two tables in the restaurant which has had a re vamp not that it needed it. We took our own prosecco which she kept chilled for us. Food was as gorgeous as always. It will remain one of our favourite places in belper.

Unusual little restaurant which was delightful, with lovely relaxed atmosphere and morrocan themed decor. The restaurant was full (Saturday evening) and had a nice buzz and the food was very good. Four of us shared four different mezze dishes, mains... three had the Lamb Tagine with Couscous and one had the Morrocan Vegetable Pie with a lovely salad... all delicious and generous portions. The staff were very friendly and the owner/chef makes the effort to have a chat and make sure you are happy. Restaurant is cash only and bring your own alcohol which is fine with us.

Visited with my Fiancee on Saturday evening after reading about this place on Trip advisor. The reviews that we read were very promising. The restaurant is small, cosy and very inviting. The decor is obviously a traditional style Moroccan theme.

A fantastic night - food was excellent and lots of choice. Dissuaded us from over ordering- you really don’t often get that honesty. Thank you for converting my friends to olives and dates! Like being at a friends house for a evening full of fabulous food, love and laughter. Thank you!

First visit and wasn’t sure what to expect but it was excellent. Quirky interior, compact which meant guests were chatting to each other. Most dishes were gluten free so lots of choice. Highlight was the lamb tagine - perfectly cooked tender meat and so flavoursome. The courgette and spinach flatbread was so great I asked for recipe.

My husband and I were heading to another restaurant when we stumbled upon Olives. The cute decorations (fairy lights, mirrors and fancy goblets!) and tasty looking menu tempted us in. We met the owner, who is so friendly and lovely! Throughout the meal she was really keen to make sure we were enjoying it, was really thoughtful and obviously had a great attention to detail.

I had read the excellent reviews & Olive definitely lived up to them. The food was delicious & tasty. This intimate restaurant is relaxed, friendly & styled to Moroccan authenticity, the candles & coloured glass give a mystical feel to the place. We were hosted like friends, Jaqui is warm & welcoming, can't wait to return for more of those lovely plates of pleasure. Thank you.

Simply the worst fish and chips I have ever purchased. I'll not say eat as I didn't get that far. They went in the bin. Arrived at tea time. Not busy. Ordered mini fish meal with curry. Told me the fish would be fried fresh. I didn't see the fish and chips being wrapped. I was stood outside the shop, collected my order and travelled the short distance home. My suspicions should have been aroused by the amount of oil that was seeping through the wrapping paper onto the mat on my van floor. On unwrapping, the fish was a burnt brown colour, soaking in oil with not a hint of crispness to the batter. The oil that was not soaked in the fish was the colour of, well I've seen cleaner oil come out of a gearbox. Chips were soggy, oily and again awful. All this for £11. I'm not sure but if you order the items individually it is cheaper. I'll not be checking as never going back.

Quick visit for a pint on an autumn evening. It was on my list to visit, but had to make a special effort as it doesn't open until 4.30 pm midweek. It was worth the effort. Good real ale. Nice fire. Nice atmosphere. Very friendly barman.
