I am starting my review with the following statement that gets added to the bill so reviewers can see how this restaurant operates without having to read the full review ' 10% TIPS INCLUDED - FOR PARTIES OF 1 OR LARGER, 10% GRATUITITY IS APPLIED AUTOMATICALLY. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS SPEAK TO THE MANAGER' We had 4 tapas and some bread and also ordered a bottle of wine. We asked for a bottle of Rioja that was listed on the menu but we were told that was not available, so we moved to the one above it instead. We waited for our wine but then we were informed by our waiter that instead he could offer us a different red and that it would be £40 (approx.) I said well the wine I ordered was around the £30 mark and didn't really want to pay £40 - mainly because I am not sure why the customer should have to fork out an extra £10 because they cannot locate the wines they have listed on their menu. He informed me that he would knock the service charge off the bill. I thought this is strange because we are only a table of 2 people, why would there be a service charge? Thankfully one of his colleagues located the bottle of wine we had ordered and the issue was resolved. Our food arrived and we must say, it really was mediocre. The gambas were incredibly expensive for the size of the portion and the size of the prawns. When the bill came we could see that they had added a 10% service charge with the statement on the receipt ' 10% TIPS INCLUDED - FOR PARTIES OF 1 OR LARGER, 10% GRATUITY IS APPLIED AUTOMATICALLY. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS SPEAK TO THE MANAGER' What a strange approach and way to manage tips - tips SHOULD be discretionary, not mandated. Tips should be left based on the service received and the dining experience. Secondly, stating that 'for tables of 1 or more' automatic tips are applied, you cannot get tables of less than 1 so basically this restaurant is stating that all diners will have this automatic tip applied. Would we have left 10% for the food and service received , no we wouldn't have done. Will we be back or recommend this restaurant? No we will not.

We absolutely love coming here. The food is authentic and tasty. You get plenty of food and drink for your money. The service is exclemplary. Tonight we were served by Lauren who could not have been more attentive and personable. She truly is a credit to the business. Lovely atmosphere in a period building in the heart of lincoln. Cannot reccommend enough!

Nice old building near castle. Steps inside are very steep, but it is part of the charm of the restaurant. We were on the top floor, so we used all the steps and got our climbing badge!! Service was friendly and attentive but not intrusive. The food was amazing and full of flavour, and it came out at a nice pace, too. Loved the prawns in garlic, lemon, honey, and chilli. Every dish was great. My only small minor negative was that the seating area at the table was a bit snug, but by no means impacted our enjoyment. It was definitely worth the price, which was reasonable

I was wondering for a few days how to rate the restaurant, but I have to be consistent with the whole thing ... Unfortunately, the food did not make any impression on me, it was bland, we ordered sets which consisted of many tapas and steak and tortillas with potatoes, so ... The tortilla was cold and completely unseasoned, barren in taste, besides, you could feel that it was not fresh, the potatoes had been cooked some time ago, when it comes to tapas, the price in comparison to the quality is very high, I asked the waiter about the fish if it was made in the restaurant, unfortunately I did not get an answer but I knew that it was a ready-made product in industrial breading and it was very noticeable, industrial olives, in a negligible amount and olive-basic sauce in which only balsamic sauce reigned supreme, I missed good Spanish olive oil which should stand on tables at guests' disposal, they did not ask about the degree of doneness of the steak, which was a surprise ... I did not have a culinary trip to Spain and I really like this cuisine and I often visit Spain, unfortunately I cannot recommend the Olivares restaurant as a showcase for good Spanish cuisine.

Excellent! Hadn't intended to originally eat here but so glad we did. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, the food was excellent and we had a really enjoyable time. The next time we are in Lincoln this is the place we will go to eat. Quirky in that it originally was a three storey house on Castle Hill which has been converted into a restaurant/tapas bar. Highly recommended...

Food was tasty though fairly pricey for tapas. Nice cosy spot on a cold night. Service was good. However was annoyed by bill which said that a 10% service charge had been added "for all parties of one or more" ie everyone! It said if you wished to discuss then to speak with the manager...which we did and a new bill without the 10 % surcharge was issued. Shame that our memory is one of annoyance rather than of a nice meal out

Fantastic place to enjoy some varied and delicious Tapas! The setting is cosy but there is a nice atmosphere and buzz about the place, particularly helped by the staff who are very friendly and couldn't be more helpful or attentive. Ordering 3 dishes per person is probably a good place to start here as it can quickly become filling. If you're having starters or considering enjoying one of their brilliant desserts then definitely don't stretch yourself and over order on mains. Thoroughly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy some good food in a nice part of the city - especially when you can walk it off around the Castle/Cathedral area afterwards or slip in to any one of the fantastic nearby pubs for a drink to end the night.

This was our first visit to Olivares, and it certainly didn't disappoint. Our daughter recommended this place to celebrate my husband birthday and it was wonderful. Cosy and relaxed atmosphere, fabulous food with such a great choice catering for every taste and plenty of vegetarian dishes. We had a selection of tapas dishes including chicken, stuffed peppers, prawns, potatoes and aubergine, all were delicious and went well with the red house wine. Our waiters Jem and Jack were very attentive, professional and good fun, nothing was too much trouble, and they really did look after us all. Having read all the reviews I had high expectations. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. Oh dear. We were really looking forward to our visit. I had initially booked a different restaurant, but cancelled to dine here instead. I really wish I hadn't. When booking, I had requested a booth as I struggle to hear when I'm in a wide open space. On arrival, we were told to go up the stairs and ask for table 15. It was a table for 2, in the middle of a room of booths, on the top floor. I asked to change and we were issued a booth. First issue sorted. We'd be sat about 3 minutes and asked for drinks order, made a decision on the spot. The drinks had barely touched the table before the waitress ran (litterally) away. Food order was taken with equally as much urgency. Waitress seemed frustrated that we were slower at ordering and asking for help on what some dishes were. Food came at different times, which we do expect at a tapas bar, so not too much of a problem. However, our potato dish was incorrect, so that had to go back. My chicken in "white wine sauce" was a red sauce. When I questioned this, the reply was "it is incorrectly described on the menu" (not helpful). Our manchego did not arrive. Plates cleared we asked the dessert menu, which arrived in the now apparently normal rushed manner. Nobody came to take our desser order, so we asked for the bill. 10% service is added but can be removed. I also asked for the missing manchego to be removed. No new bill, just word that it had been removed and a new amount verbally issued. I did try to speak to the Manager upon leaving but I couldn't see him and I didn't want to take this up with a Waitress as I already felt like us being there was an inconvenience. Notes to the manager: If you have a "special requests" box on your online booking form, please read it. If I had been told I couldn't have a booth when we asked to move, I could accept it. But getting one just shows me that you either didn't read my request in the face place, or you didn't even try to accommodate it. Slow down a bit. This is tapas, not KFC - we expect a slower service. This is a lovely restaurant but it is not relaxing for us at all. Give us time. Help us when we need help. Ask if we would like water on our table and stop charging about while we are eating. If you need to rush about like that, there clearly isn't enough staff to cater for your customers. I was exhausted when I left.

Fab, quirky little tapas restaurant set on different floors, very near Lincoln Cathedral. Ideal for small groups, couples, and, if you are a solo diner (able to climb stairs) - request table 7 (suitable for 1-2 people), tucked into a corner but still with the opportunity to people watch. Cozy atmosphere and plenty of choice on the tapas, desserts & drinks menu.

We booked a table for 9.30pm online several weeks beforehand as we were attending a concert at the Cathedral which is very close by. When we arrived, we were blocked from entering from an extremely rude waitress asking what we wanted. We explained that we had a table booked for 9.30pm. Our watches at this point said 9.31pm. She then went rambling on about how the kitchen was now closed and she had called and left a message - when we checked, she had left a message at 8.50pm. My husband calmly explained that his phone was switched off because we were at a concert. Finally, and reluctantly she allowed us inside only for us to be looked up and down by another waitress whilst the door blocking waitress explained rather loudly to the kitchen staff that she had agreed to allow us in. We sat down at our table feeling embarrassed and also feeling pressured to order quickly, which we did. She said that once we had ordered we could stay as long as we liked but the kitchen would be closing so we ordered a bottle of wine to go with our meal. We were then told by another member of staff at 10.15pm that we had 10 mins as she wanted to close the restaurant.- it appeared every other member of staff had now left. So, we then had to gulp down the remaining wine quickly. We got up to pay and could find no-one - we were calling out but nothing. I popped my head outside to find the remaining member of staff having a personal call on her mobile. We are always keen to support local businesses as we know it is a struggle and they have had many challenges since COVID but oh my goodness, we do not expect to be treated so rudely and made to feel so very unwelcome. The only reason I am giving two stars instead of one is because the food was actually nice but as for the staff - they need some manners and some training. And if they don't want people arriving as late as 9.30pm for dinner, then they should get their online booking system amended to reflect that. We certainly will never return.

Very nice quaint place, four of us dined here on Saturday, very nice food although didn't quite seem to have had enough to warrant paying 140 pounds ,in total we spent 250 pounds, perhaps a little more food , but overall we enjoyed it but wouldn't reccomend it as a place to go often , I even paid 4.95 for a small bottle of lager, I was expecting a pint ,food quality is good but nothing over the top to say what we paid, white wine was just put on the table ,no ice bucket etc, service was ok and the service charge is included so you just have to hope you get good service an extra dish of homemade Spanish meatballs would have gone down well with 34.95 a head menu ,overall we had a good day but with a much lighter wallet .

My partner and I ate here for her birthday, the atmosphere was authentic and cosy. The cocktails we ordered were delicious and very big so you most definitely get your moneys worth. The tapas selection was vast and varied, there’s something for everyone. Every plate we ordered was a great portion and tasted incredible- there wasn’t a crumb left by us! The service was great, we were left alone to enjoy our meals but attentive if we needed anything, our server was lovely and friendly. When you leave the restaurant, the location is on the doorstep of the castle and near the cathedral where you can enjoy a walk with fantastic historical views.

We visited Olivares on a Friday evening; old friends back in Lincoln looking for a cosy place to eat and catch up. The layout is very quirky and we liked our little nook. It was quiet which doesn’t always bode well but it was very small and not easy to see if there were other tables elsewhere. The waitress was quick to tell us she was only 16 and knew nothing about the wine. Fine. The house white was drinkable and pleasant. However, 16 or not, she should have known something about the dishes on offer so she could make recommendations and answer questions. Instead she was completely clueless and just shrugged her shoulders when asked about specific dishes, as if it was fine to have no idea. Some of the food was very tasty; the breads, olives and cheese dishes were lovely. However, I had ordered a mushroom dish that said it was in a white wine sauce. It arrived and was 100% tinned, creamed mushrooms. No doubt on this. Pretty shocking. Additionally, we ordered a couple of tequilas and were charged for two 50cl shots but received 25cl shots. They did adapt the bill for this but many people may not have seen the measurements and would have been short changed. Overall, I don’t think I’d go again and would advise such a quirky little place that could be very welcoming and unique to get staff that have a clue what’s going on.

My partner and I went on a Saturday night for our monthly date night and wanted to try as we’ve always walked past it and it wanted to try it. On first impressions, it looked like a cute, cosy wood panelled tapas place. Sadly, this was only the facade. Yes the food was amazing but the staff and service let it down. Clearly the restaurant only employs students from the university that don’t care whether they give good service or not, they just want to use their time at work as a social occasion. We were sat on the first floor, to the left at the top of the stairs. We were given a table that looked into the staff pantry/clearing area and had to hear their staff’s ‘boy troubles’ whilst going on their phones and eating food that had been cleared from tables across from us! We saw them clear plates and set them on the shelf in the clearing area and then tuck in. The pot wash and the male server were the only saving grace (they seemed to do more work than all the other staff combined), the other female staff dumped the food down without even a description or a smile. We saw a table across from us inform their server that they hadn’t received all their food and the server came back to clarify what else they needed - clearly it wasn’t put on the order in the beginning! Drink and desserts ordered were taken and new drinks put down without clearing the old glasses. I could go on. Get rid of your poor staff and employ professional servers who actually want to be there - otherwise you’ll lose customers.

Booking made and confirmed. Arrived early but happy to wait. However, another couple arrived early too ( same booking time) and shown to a table. Immediately I was not impressed by the flippant attitude of the waitress. When we returned for our table, again we had to wait. Clearly a misunderstanding between the staff because their attitude and bickering amongst themselves was very unprofessional and uncomfortable for us. When shown to a table another couple had to move off it. During the whole meal we were subjected to listening to the staff fall out and moan about their jobs etc. We were seated on the ground floor nearest the door. The food was good and enjoyable. The waitress had no idea if we had had all our tapas as she asked us if we had???!!! We were over charged for two beers so do check your bill. Overall, shambolic service, disorganised staff and unprofessional behaviour. This spoilt our whole evening. There are plenty of restaurants in the city that offer a much better experience and value for money. Very disappointed.

Nice but not great. Lovely food and atmosphere but shoved in and shoved out, food served at the speed of light and told 4 times that we had to be out for the next booking.

We ordered a set menu and it was excellent. Great variety, beautifully cooked. It is so good to have authentic Spanish food prepared by a Spanish chef. The service was fine and the ambience lovely.

Good food in wonderfully atmospheric surroundings. Small & cosy, with a distinct Alpine ambience, the tapas options were varied & very tasty. The restaurant is situated in a delightful area of the city, very convenient after visiting both the Cathedral & the Castle.

Quirky building, really nice tapas and quick service. The bottle of red wine we had was lovely too.

Lovely setting and fantastic Tapas. Staff cheerful and helpful. Couldn’t fault it here. Just a note for anyone visiting with mobility issues, ask for a table downstairs. Olivares is over 3 floors with steep stairs, it’s a lovely old building.

Surprisingly good - decent selection of classic tapas alongside some more unique items. Fresh and well seasoned. Wine list is brief with a few gems. Solid choice for dinner in Lincoln.

Olivares tapas bar was an absolute treat! I had booked this restaurant for my husband’s birthday whilst we were visiting Lincoln for a few days. It was quirky but comforting inside. The staff were pleasant and accommodating. But the food…. It was so delicious! We had the set meal to share and there was a lot of food! Each and every individual part of the meal was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing! What a birthday treat my husband had. We will most definitely be visiting again if we find ourselves in or around the Lincoln area again!

Beautiful food, authentic Spanish tapas, in a beautiful setting in Lincolns historic Bailgate. Great service and food came fast. Love the little booths and Spanish music adds to the atmosphere.

Great tapas! Better the Ole Ole's. Vibe was good and staff was good. The building is small but I think it fits the atmosphere. Will come again :)

Visited with a friend for dinner and, unfortunately, was underwhelmed. First impression is how claustrophobic it is inside. Accessibility is really difficult with how steep and narrow the stairs are. Luckily, none of us had mobility issues, but they didn't ask either, so not sure...

What a beautiful restaurant in the heart of Lincoln , took my brother for his birthday , the food was absolutely amazing, cooked to perfection , we all went for the set menu sharing platter for 4 people and can honestly say it was worth the money and ample amount of food for us all . The staff were attentive and friendly, the owner even gave my brother a birthday present which was a really nice touch . We will visit again soon
