Old Town Carvery in Birmingham

Ordered double gin and lemonade and a pint of large for me and my partner....went out for a cigarette. Came back to our table to find our drinks gone.. pub policy apparently. Spoke to cal who was useless. £15 gone in the matter of mins, literally had a sip! Wouldnt replace the drinks. Would not go back, staff are not trained and canf be arsed to deal with thinks...Apart from adam hes lovely and bouncer wayne, he is amazing

We had such a great time at the quiz hosted by Sean Wallace, the Dark Destroyer from The Chase. He was so funny and the atmosphere was really fun, relaxed, and friendly. I would have given 5 stars but our drinks were served in plastic glasses on one round which was disappointing considering the price of a pint. Other than that we had a lovely time and will be back!

I’d read a number of time that this pub did a good Sunday Roast and as it was a short walk from my hotel thought I’d give it a go Firstly it’s been decorated in a style that highlights its history and has been maintained, The rear area is obviously well used and there was a vinyl record market whilst I was there. The roast portion is a good size and the Yorkshire puddings great. My only quibble was that I found the gravy to havd a very soft flavour which was not completely to my taste. So if you in B’ham city centre on a Sunday afternoon give it a try

We were expecting a quaint "inn hotel" with a beer garden, however upon arriving it became obvious the hotel aspect was not their priority and it was far more of a busy pub than hotel. There were no clear instructions on how to check in, and even the staff didn't seem sure. We had to wait in the busy bar for a while before being seen to. The worst part about our stay here was by far the fact that they had a DJ playing hardcore drum & bass, and heavy rock music until well after 1am with absolutely no soundproofing in our sauna of a room. After the beer garden shut off around 1am, more music started (what sounded like) inside the venue. Not to mention the local nightclub that played extremely loud music until 5am!! We had one of the worst sleeps of our life, and we were furious that this wasn't mentioned at all when booking the hotel. DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL IF YOU WANT A GOOD SLEEP! On top of the loud music blaring all night, you could feel every spring in the double bed. The TV was not connected to any form of internet, anti also didn't work when I tried myself. When we first turned the TV on, the first thing that popped up were the adult TV channels... Lovely! Honestly extremely disappointed with the "hotel" aspect of our stay. Pub & restaurant were nice, but they should seriously consider improving their accommodation. Double glazed windows would be a good start.

We made a booking for 3 people upon arrival we were ignored initially, then made to wait for over 5 mins to be seated but not communicated with. We had no idea what was happening. The only time the hostess came to enquire if we were happy with our food was to actually pick up the plates but only one person in our party had actually finished. The food was lovely no complaints well cooked and served. The building it self is beautiful and any history buff would be pleased to dine within it's walls.

Was recommended to visit, but sadly the food I had was not pleasant. I can't recommend you visit this pub as my experience was very disappointing and when I imformed the server that the food was not of a good standard she apologised and said she would inform the chef, but it wasn't sincere she didn't really care or was interested in my complaint 😕

Very disappointing. It was just as cold inside as it was outside. My party ordered different meals. The fish & chips looked the best & was hot, the lasagne was tasty but was only warm & a small portion. We ordered hot drinks, but they were luke warm when we received them. I'm glad there was a 2 for £20 on some of the meals, as in my opinion,it would have been very expensive for what we had

We stumbled upon this pub while in Digbeth for the day. From the outside it looks old-fashioned but inside, it is a modern and stylish pub. We sat outside in the huge beer garden which was lovely. The food was delicious and took a modern twist on traditional pub food. Staff were friendly and very helpful! Would highly recommend!

We sat outside upstairs which was very pleasant. Easy ordering via app (save for a few technical difficulties!) Staff varied, some were helpful others less so but nothing major. The pub got very loud towards the evening as it was very busy. Didn't order food other than chips so cannot comment on that.

This is a great pub to go to with friends. The staff are very friendly and the service is good. Really good beer garden which is perfect for being able to socialise outdoors. All in all a fab pub that I would recommend!!

Reservé una mesa para un pequeño grupo de amigos; cuando llegué mostré mi reserva y me di cuenta de que era para el día anterior y había cometido un error con mi reserva. En mi opinión, The Old Crown fue uno de los mejores pubs que visitamos en Birmingham en nuestro viaje de cinco días. Ubicado en un edificio del siglo XIV con entramado de madera que sirve pub Grub y Cask Ales y presenta música en vivo. Este es un pub que vale la pena visitar. Un pub increíble con un diseño de varias habitaciones con características interesantes en todo el interior y excelentes opciones de asientos. Probé a la anciana como un fin de semana de apertura de pub. Todo el personal era genial, cervezas limpias y sin duda bien cuidadas. Como nota al margen, el equipo de trabajo visiblemente más joven era agradable, profesional y una chica de cabello claro particular lidió con una pelea a fuego lento afuera que podría haberse vuelto desagradable perfectamente. Felicitaciones a esa jovencita.

Fabulous oldie worldie room, big with beams, large bathroom next door with roll top bath. No ghosts although the sloping floor gave you a funny feeling.My only moan was that although there was bath/shower gel , only hand wash was provided would rather have soap I can use on my face’Handwash’ too harsh.We already knew we would hear the traffic noise and to be honest with the TV on it was not noticeable. Other guests might like to ask for a room at the back if they find traffic noise a problem.

Stayed here 11th February 2020... Lovely place, friendly staff, great atmosphere and fabulous breakfast xDid the Peaky Blinders tour from here which was fascinating, enjoyed every minute. DAVE OUR TOUR GUIDE IS AMAZING, he has so much knowledge and was extremely informative x I recommend it.

Tomamos unas copas en este pub, una buena selección, estaba bastante ocupado los domingos a la hora del almuerzo, pero con mucho espacio para sentarse y una gran área afuera si el clima lo permite. Justo al lado del Digbeth Dining Club.

Estuve allí esta noche. Pedí comida por primera vez porque tengo una tarjeta de descuento. Pedí el sándwich de carne (que se ve increíble en sus artículos promocionales en las redes sociales. Lamentablemente, me quedé muy decepcionado con la comida. Obtienes bastantes cortes de carne en el sándwich, pero hay una línea muy fina entre medio cocido y cruda. Cuando el bistec estaba completamente cocido era muy duro, y cuando estaba medio cocido parecía crudo y tenía una textura muy masticable, como carne cruda. La carne salió fría. El bistec tenía muy poco sabor, no había carne jugos (muy secos) y el stilton dominó todo con un sabor muy fuerte, sin embargo, las patatas estaban muy calientes y sabían muy bien.He estado en Old Crown muchas veces para tomar una copa, y con las nuevas renovaciones se ve muy bien.Esto no me ha disuadido de probar otras cosas del menú en el futuro, pero probablemente no volveré a comer su Steak Sandwich nuevamente.

Have written a separate review re the Peaky Blinders experience which was great fun and informative.Would like to acknowledge the very good meal we had prior to the walk and lecture.The Sunday roast was absolutely spot on,we went for the baked ham option which was freshly cooked, great portions and sensibly priced.The Staff were friendly and efficient and kept us informed where to meet the other Peaky visitors.The Pub absolutely radiates history and is a rabbit warren of rooms, lounges and an outside area.Great visit, loved it.

Went on the Peaky Blinders Tour which was hosted by Professor Carl Chinn. A very enjoyable evening and Carl Chinn was absolutely amazing with his knowledge of Birmingham as well as the real story off the Peaky Blinders.Lovely food, really friendly staff.A great night out!

I organised a meal here for me and 8 work colleagues for a team Christmas party. Right from the outset the staff were so helpful (Eliza and Matt) both by email and phone. The night itself ran so smoothly and the food was great - The chocolate torte was my favourite! Everyone enjoyed it and said what a lovely place it was. Thank you guys, we hope to visit again very soon!

Came here again on a Sunday. Two out of the four options were unavailable, so there wasn’t much choice. The meal was good, besides from the undercooked broccoli. Service was great, very quick and friendly. Would come here again.

We popped in as a group of 5 for a work lunch on a Friday afternoon. There is a really good range on the menu, and not necessarily all your standard pub fare. That said, we did all go for the fish & chips having spied it on some other customers' tables on the way through. All of our meals came within 15 minutes of ordering and it was clearly cooked fresh. The proper chips were cooked beautifully, and the fish perfectly light and fluffy with a crispy, thin batter. Pair all that with some lovely fresh peas and chunky tartare sauce and you've got yourself some lovely fish & chips. We'll definitely be making this our regular lunchtime treat.

Great pub with friendly staff, current menu (with lots of veggie and vegan options!), large selection of ales, huge vibrant beer garden and a great cafe lounge area to top it off.

Been getting breakfast sandwiches from here every Friday for a while, each time thinking they were going to get better however today I was charged £7 for 2 take away sandwiches - ordered 1 bacon sandwich and 1 sausage sandwich, got back to office to find we had been given 2 x bacon sandwiches. The price charged is never consistent and neither is quality, thankfully there are plenty of other cafes in the area I can take my business to.

The restaurant area here offers affordable, tasty salads and extras in a pleasant, welcoming environment about 10 minutes walk from the Bull Ring. I can thoroughly recommend visitors to Birmingham to make the effort to visit this 14th century establishment in an historical, quirky part of Birmingham.

We went to this pub as part of the peaky blinders tour. It's in a rough area but has a nice sunny seating area with music playing so quite a good atmosphere. Not the usual type of pub I would go to but worth a visit if you are in the area.

Went on the 'Real Peaky Blinders' tour with Carl Chinn. What a brilliant experience! Carl is extremely knowledgeable -as you'd expect- but is also a very good communicator. He kept us entranced for several hours in an informative and entertaining way.

Lovely fish and chips, good value for money, and friendly staff. Thanks for a good evening, would come back!

Lovely old building. Quirky rooms: you could see the sunlight through the gaps between the walls and the wooden sections. Very clean and tidy. The only negatives were the load music until 1 am and the bed was too soft for us.

Years ago,I knew all about the history of this venerable public house and it was good to see it cleaned up and smart both inside and out. The bar staff were efficient and pleasant. I chose bangers and mash, and this was a pricey mistake. The plate had green vegetable strewn all over , and the gravy seemed devoid of onions. The sausages unfortunately tasted flat and flavour less.The owners should try their own cooked food before selling it to the public. You need to get a tastier sausage. Sayers is much more inexpensive yet their sausages are great. Only the mash was tasty.

La cocina de Mockingbird y Baked In Brick estaban cerradas, así que vine aquí antes del cine. Pedí la hamburguesa de pollo y fue fantástico. A ellos, esta es una gira que no debe perderse.

Vinimos a tomar unas copas y algo de comida ligera, y aunque había un buen ambiente, la comida era mala. El pan de ajo en particular fue el peor que he tenido, solo un poco de pan plano con gránulos de ajo que lo cubren.

Fantastic pub, we went for the Peaky Tours with Carl Chinn. Carl Chinn is an amazing human being so passionate about local history, Birmingham and the midlands. A national treasure. He made each and everyone one of us welcome and part of the tour. The food we had was also, I have to admit surprisingly, very very good. I recommend highly.

First time iv being to this pub, Monday night yay, not, Got tickets to this tasting, great information 4 whiskeys to try really nice pub great atmosphere, good food great beer and better Irish whiskey, O by the way oldest pub in Birmingham

Came here on the Sunday, the staff were attentive and polite. The food was nice, I had the 1/2 chicken meal, huge piece of chicken and the meal was just great. Would come here again, it would also be advisable to book a table as the place can get busy in the afternoon and evening.

Booked a Peaky Blinders Tour (highly recommend) and met here for the talk. Friendly place with a great selection of beers and lagers. After the Peaky Tour they served a pie, mash and peas meal. The steak pie was as good as you will get with chunky meat. The rest of the menu looked very interesting. There was also a wide variety of events coming up. Wish we lived closer.

I come here alot for pre gig drinks but had never eaten here before. We ate here on a Saturday afternoon, i ordered the burger and my partner the fish and chips. The food came quite quickly, it was v quiet, but it was lovely. My burger was so tasty i had the pineapple one, one of the bets pub burger I have had. My partners fish was HUGE, the biggest piece of battered cod I have seen in a pub restaurant, i twas super yummy too. Will definitely eat here again, and continue to sample there selection of Ales.

I really was not expecting to find an old historic pub in the heart of Birmingham. Dining solo can be tricky sometimes with getting a table etc. However the service was excellent, my Steak and Ale Pie and pint of Eagle IPA was the equal of any I have enjoyed in my Lancashire homeland. This place is buzzing and would make an excellent venue for pre-drinks before heading out into town. Give it a try, you wont regret it!

Excellent burger - good service - lovely old building. Would recommend it as a good place to unwind.

My family and I had my Nans wake here and it was perfect. At a time of great sadness all of the staff here made the whole day bearable. Nothing was to much trouble. Everything we discussed was sorted for when we arrived

Visited here with my son Adam on the way to watching the magnificent Birmingham City.

None of the 4 cubicles in the ladies toilets had any toilet roll and the disabled toilet was locked. For that reason alone, I wouldn't go there again. On Sunday lunchtime it was very busy and I had to wait quite a while at the bar to get served. Most people were ordering coffee but there was a long wait. I cancelled my coffee but it came anyway. I ordered Sunday lunch, when it arrived everything was lukewarm. The gravy was watery and the vegetables really hard and crunchy, even the roast potato was only just cooked. I needed a steak knife to cut through the vegetables. There as a very nice big Yorkshire pudding, but the beef was just one very thin slice. Not very good, would not recommend.

Teníamos dos hamburguesas, una española con chorizzo y una griega con hallumi que estaban en el 10% superior de hamburguesas en Birmingham y una excelente relación calidad-precio en 8. 50 cada uno. Fiable buena cerveza real - mi compañero tenía proseco.

Vinimos aquí como grupo después de jugar Ghetto Golf justo al lado en Custard Factory.

La atención fue magnífica desde el primer momento. Siempre atentos de nuestras necesidades y con una sonrisa. Esta a 10min del centro (1.7mi) y el edificio parece una antigua taberna inglesa. Muy recomendable!

Después de pasar un buen rato investigando en algún lugar para detenerme a comer antes de un concierto al que asistíamos, mi novia y yo decidimos que este era el mejor lugar para ir a cenar un poco.

Birmingham's oldest pub is full of character and charm. If you are looking for a great atmosphere in the heart of Digbeth, I would recommend calling in here. A great selection of lively events and themed nights which are perfect if you are looking for something different.

We left after 10 mins , pub was overcrowded and dirty , staff walked past us a couple of times and ignored us. Didn't feel welcomed at all so went somewhere else instead. Wouldn't recommend !

The Old Crown is the oldest pub in the area and it's got a cosy welcoming charm. The food is very good traditional pub menu fish and chips, burgers etc. all done really well. They've got a great gin selection which works well for me as a gin obsessive! Staff are really friendly and knowledgable especially the manager Matt and the girls in the cafe.

It was quiet on the wet and cool Sunday evening when I arrived. I only intended to have the one Guinness, but the quality of the pint and the fascinating stories of Birmingham's oldest pub told to me by Amy and Eliza ensured I stayed a little longer.

Lovely old building in the busy, industrial 'Creative Quarter' - just a short stroll from the city centre; very honest, characterful and unpretentious, without being grotty (which is sometimes a difficult balance to get right - the Old Crown has it spot on); friendly service; the roast was very good value at under a tenner - my partner loved her pork, whilst my Vegetarian Wellington was essentially a huge chunk of veggie pie, crammed full of veg - delicious! As is often the case, the massive home-made Yorkies and jugs of gravy act as plate fillers, which can seem a bit cynical - but, to be fair, there was plenty enough of everything to come away feeling nicely full.

So we came across the old crown on a thursday evening, after two family arguments, our mother tripping on a pavement kerb and my brother Giuseppe having lost his brand new cap which he bought in Bristol recently:(. We were extremely hangry, so pub grub sounded good for us. However when we ordered there was a small wait. When the food came, Giuseppe was a bit disappointed as he ordered the pie of the day, which had stated it came with chips. However it came with mash instead! But he got over it. Tasty steak and REALLY nice environment, so nice to see a local boozer being so hip dip jump the frog LIT. Not quite five star but still very gOoOoooOooOd indeed. Pretty nice, chill staff. A good ol’ find in the middle of this mordern city! Hee haw!

We loved everything about this place, can't believe we haven't been there before! This is the oldest pub in Birmingham and we came to know about it because we went to Ghetto Golf and they had recreated part of the pub as one of their holes because they loved it so much. Great pub, it's like a little maze inside and outside they have a lovely beer garden, perfect when the sun is out! We had lunch there and the food was great, all the staff were really friendly, service was great and the customers were lovely and friendly too. A great place and one we'll be visiting regularly from now on!

beautiful old building, our room was so big more like a suite than a double room. We had burgers for lunch which were lovely, the staff were all so friendly and helpful, we would definately stay again. The website does say they have parking on site but they dont, but there is a 23 hour car park a two minute walk away which did cosst about £10 but as the room was only £70 for a double ensuite with breakfast that was still pretty good. Huge garden with lots of places to sit, big screen outside for the footie and wimbledon, lovely decor inside, spotlessly clean everywhere.

First time visiting here with a group of friends from work. We arrived around 6pm on a Wednesday evening. There were only two bar staff on (sometimes just one) and the service was awful. We were kept waiting for ages, to the point of being blatantly ignored. After having waited for over 15 minutes and watched others turn up to the bar later but get served before us, we had to ask if we could be next! There was no apology or acknowledgement, just stroppy faces. It was almost like they didn’t want to serve us because we clearly weren’t the usual “in crowd” in our office wear. The only reason why this isn’t a one star review is because the beer was good, the venue/beer garden great and the food (and the man who served this) was fab. Get more efficient and less stroppy bar staff. We were minutes away from walking out.

What a top spot to watch the World Cup footie with a huge screen at one end of the big urban beer garden. Plenty of different beers on offer from Hop House 13 to Wainwrights Ale. The food is pretty darn good with some interesting ciabattas in three different sizes (medium size is still huge).

If you like your Pubs old with timber frames and creaky floors then this is the place for you. I thought I sensed the presence of two ghosts, one male and one female dressed in typical 1600's clothing in the doorway leading to the lounge area but it was a hot day and maybe I just imagined them! It was my first visit here and I was with my friend celebrating her 65th birthday. Unfortunately we both wanted fish & chips which weren't available so I had the hollumi burger which was nice, and my friend tried the fish finger sandwich- which was ciabatta bread and she said was tough and she couldn't cut it. We had 2 glasses of prossecco and the total came to £35 which I thought was a bit steep! The Ladies loo is boarded up shut so we had all had to queue for the disabled loo.

It was like stepping back in time, the pub is full of old photographs and memorabilia, the real ale is great and the food is proper Birmingham grub. The staff are all very friendly.

This pub has a long history, with the year 1368 painted on the wall outside. Inside it has a old comfortable feel, and there is an ancient well in the lobby to the courtyard.

We were there as part of a Peaky Tour. It is a great old pub with lots of space and atmosphere - good food and beer.

Fuimos a la corona como una decisión de último minuto para conseguir comida (vivimos localmente). Nunca tuvimos una cena con asado allí antes y fue increíble, demasiada comida, no es realmente una crítica, sin embargo el personal del bar es un poco desorganizado pero agradable de todos modos.

Precioso edificio histórico a 10 minutos andando del centro. Estuvimos en el flat (apartamento de 2 habitaciones, baño y salón) que está estupendo para 4 personas. El desayuno muy bien, se puede elegir entre english breakfast o continental. Muy cómodo poder cenar en el pub por las noches.

Visitamos el Antiguo Crown para unos tragos el sábado tarde. Recibió vacía botella de vino, restos de comida y vasos vacíos en el suelo en la puerta de entrada. Bar señoras eligió para servir a aquellos que sabían antes de nosotros aunque obviamente estaban al lado. Aseos, tanto hombres como mujeres, estaban sucias, malolientes y sucias con pañales, latas, vasos de plástico - obviamente no había sido revisado por el personal. Una pena que esa pub histórico es presentado a los visitantes en una manera tan pobre.

Nos alojamos aquí el fin de semana. Era más barato que los hoteles cerca del aeropuerto y el NEC. Mi habitación era el comedor antiguo, así que era grande. Tenía una cama doble y una individual sólo para mí. El armario en la esquina me pareció el inodoro era un armario lleno de teteras, etc.

Llegamos a este lugar y me dijeron mi habitación había sido cancelado. A pesar de que llamé el jueves para asegurarse de que todo está bien, y así era. Está a unos 20 minutos andando de la plaza de toros y todo Birmingham tiene que ofrecer. Fueron un evento estilo oktoberfes. última noche que parecía realmente bueno. La habitación estaba bien. Bastante básico pero al final del día lo único que queríamos era un lugar para dormir, así que estaba bien. Decoración de paredes finas como el papel, cansados y necesitan un poco de cariño. sensible No me di cuenta de que tenía un baño compartido, así también la smallprint! ! Decía que estaba bien. Went here for the first time last week and will definitely be going back. Really welcoming, friendly pub. Staff were really helpful. Food was delicious. The sort of place you could just walk into off the street and feel at home.

Beautiful old (oldest) pub. Such a comfy nice feeling to it, nice beer garden, attentive staff. Well worth the slight walk from the town centre. One of my favourite pubs in the area. Looking forward to trying to the food at some point!
