What a downfall this has had. It used to be a vibrant pub with good drinks on draft etc, now it's just a shell that smells. They serve cans and bottles mostly that they buy from tesco and there's only a couple of drinks on draft, not sure what's happened but it's a shame as it used to be a good night out.

Really nice location in Altrincham’s historic market centre (now slightly ruined by the main road). Good ales at good prices and a cracking jukebox box setup. Just needs a bit of love and excitement to draw punters away from the usual market, etc

Great pub.. fantastic live entertainment in the shape of the amazing classic rock covers band 'ONE IN TEN'.. 😎🤘 A good choice of beers, although I have to say.. a disappointing choice of 0% beers for us drivers.. please rectify this, increase and show off your range.. attract the drivers in.. we all don't want sickly soft drinks! Guinness 0% is particularly good! 👍 Other than that.. a great pub!! 👍

Total dump. The place is falling apart! Looks like it will be closed down soon, if not it should be. Just one customer when I went in. No music, no food and not an enjoyable place at all. Wet seats too. Overpriced beers, nearly £5 for a pint of standard ale. Lady behind the bar was pleasant enough though. Looks like the live music (if there still is any) is the only thing keeping it going. Steer clear otherwise.

Visited with friends on a tuesday. What a fall from grace for this once great real ale pub. The land lord (a large man in a green shirt) just seems to sit at a table barking orders at the (pleasant) staff. Beers are now average at best, Place is cold and although it's had a paint job, it still has a weird smell and needs a total gutting. Toilets are horrific. And the beer garden/smoking area is a death trap. Only saving grace is good staff and the better pubs nearby... what a pity

This is one of the nicest if not the nicest pubs I have ever been to. The people here are so lovely and there are puppies!!! They have just released a vegan menu and the chilli alone is a reason to visit. It has quickly become our ‘local’ and we will be coming here for years to come. Pints are cheap and the atmosphere is amazing.

I came here because I heard the Sunday dinner was lovely .. 2 for £10 You can't really go wrong. You have a choice of 3 different meats and it comes with all the trimming. The meat was lovely, the only thing was the pub was VERY quite and the potatoes tasted as if they had been heated up 5 times and were very hard. But for 2 for £10 it was well worth it.

I was visiting this place as they had booked an up and coming popular Manchester band on Friday 09th March who as always proceed to take the roof off the place, the place is packed, everyone is up and dancing and singing, the bar is rammed. The stage power cuts out and so there was no more electric for the last seconds of the last song of the set, but that doesn't stop us, the whole pub finish the song word by word to the beat of the amazing drummer who can still be heard in the back ground. The bar staff then RUFUSE TO PAY THE BANDS the agreed prices and try to pay them less than 20% of the agreed price. This figure wouldn't have even paid for their taxis there, absolutely pathetic, especially when that night was probably the busiest that pub has seen for an extremely long time, if not ever, just the five people in my taxi would have spent more than the original agreed price, we were all understandably angry and I felt like demanding all the money back that I'd spent, as it felt like it was spent under false pretences and I would have rather preferred to donate the money I spent on alcohol to the bands. The whole pub had been packed for the full duration of the two performances of the two bands, (now empty again once the live music has ended), with all these people who would never have stepped foot in this pub for any other reason, who have piled money behind the bar all night and would have continued to do so if the night didn't take a sour turn. The members of the bands (along with their families and friends) received absolute abuse from the bar stuff and regulars (and some of them were seriously scary - trust me, you wouldn't want to run into one of them in a dark alley) when trying to speak to the bar staff and get their agreed money, they wouldn't hear any of it and was just telling them to take it up with higher management and then kicked everyone out after threatening to physically do it themselves (none of the regulars who jumped up screaming, swearing, squaring up to people getting in their faces and swinging their arms around got thrown out though), bear in mind the band members are about 18/19 years old and some of their mums and dads (even one of their grannies) were with them. The staff members were absolutely disgraceful and unbelievably unprofessional and now they have the cheek to go on about the conduct of the bands - I think the lads were more than entitled to be annoyed about the fact they were lied to and conned into wasting their time and effort, but there is no excuse for a "professional" establishment trying to lie, cheat and steal from hardworking lads and then to threaten to knock them out when they are rightly trying to negotiate and get what they were owed. The reasoning from the staff members for not paying them seemed to be that they didn't play a full set - err, yes they did! The power may have conveniently gone off during the last song (we feel like this was their plan all along), but as I've already mentioned earlier it was literally the last dying seconds, we all wrapped up the end of the song, the lead singer still did his shout outs, thank you and plugs at the end even though he couldn't be heard and all of us in the audience spent a good amount of time cheering and clapping (normally we would encourage an encore, but obviously couldn't under the circumstances) and they had been playing for more than their 45 minutes allocated time and did their full set list, but even if it were the case that they may not have technically completed their set, how could they be blamed for the electrics "failing" and not being able to physically continue?! Shame on you. What a big con. Ripping off young adults trying to earn a living. Oh and if that isn't enough, this pathetic excuse of a pub is the definition of what a "dive" is; the place stinks, the stench hits you from the moment you step through the door and the décor and furnishings are revolting, dirty and tacky. Don't put your poor nose and eyes through it.

Some friends and i visited the Old Market Tavern on the last Friday before Christmas and were pleasantly surprised at what we found... This pub is located on the main A56 road from Manchester and the grand tudor style building sits above Altrincham... The pub is few mins walk up from the train, metrolink, & bus station, and easy to find... The pub is massive and the decor is mainly wood themed... there are plenty of places to sit plus an area for bands to play - this venue has gigs on most weekends... A band called XL5 were on from just after 9pm the night we were in... the band was great and the music added to a lively atmosphere and resulted in the pub being packed... some may feel the pub was too full but we found it about right... The pub is also well known as a drinks venue with a great choice...  There are about ten handpumps and several real ale favourites including Black Sheep, Cumberland Ale, and Blond Witch were on when we were in... there were also ciders, lagers, wines, etc for those who prefer something else... We enjoyed a good night out with great ale, good music, and a lively atmosphere... we think the Old Market Tavern is well worth a visit...

About 400 metres from this pub is Altrincham Market Hall, a venue that has been transformed from a traditional market into a trendy and expensive eatery appealing to the local hipsters. We wandered in there on Sunday feeling hungry and found a noisy, chilly shed with no seats available and food offerings such as mushrooms on toast for £8 a portion. So off to the sanity of The Old Market Tavern where a freshly cooked and generous Sunday roast cost £6.95 and could be washed down by a variety of very good hand pumped ales. Sadly it was almost empty, all I can say is that the fashion victims of South Manchester must have more money than sense.

I think the market tavern gets overlooked because of the new market hall and the various eateries within. the markettavern overlooks the old market place, mentioned in Thomas de Quincey's Confessions of an Opium Eater. For that alone, it is worth a visit.

Visited with some friends for a drink recently... the pub is quite large and is well known for it's real ales and music in the area... The pub has about 10 handpumps offering mainly real ales like Landlord, Deuchars, etc, plus some local ales... as well as the real ales there are ciders, lagers, bottled beers, etc... There is also music on offer a couple of nights a week - usually Thursdays, Fridays, & Saturdays but check in advance... Food can also be purchased, and whilst we did not eat, friends commented that the food is usually good here and reasonably priced... that said, this is more a pub than a restaurant... worth a visit...

If you want quality on a plate, this is not for you. If you want a full plate of filling, hot food for a very fair price then this is it. We were staying across the road on a Sunday night prior to an early morning flight. We had a Sunday lunch in early evening with a choice of 3 meats with trimmings and about 6 different veg on our plates plus Yorkshire pudding. I think the mash was Smash and veg from the freezer but the meat was fresh and it all tasted great. My wife has a GF allergy but that was no problem here. Thanks.
