OKAN Brixton East in Lambeth

Love Okan, but a bit upset about the special I ordered.. no prices on the board and ended up paying £20 for a king oyster mushroom small-ish okonomiyaki.. really surprised by that price. All right it’s got pricier ingredients (truffle mayo and ponzu) but the price is very steep! I probably should have asked before ordering but didn’t think it would be as expensive as the wagyu special 😬

Not sure if they have a chef with Korean background? Saw so many good reviews here but our visit was a bit disappointing. They claimed to be a Kansai style restaurant but why kimchi??? We ordered the omelette with eel. We thought it was an omelette roll because this is supposed to be a common Japanese dish. So overpriced because the omelette turned up as a dish with shredded eel wrapped in a thin piece of ‘egg tortilla’ (at the beginning we even thought they had forgotten to add the eel, as they were so small). Okra with crispy pork: okra tasted good but where was the crispy pork?? There were only pieces of pan fried meat. When the server brought us the udon, we knew we were going to be disappointed again. The udon was served in Korean aluminium pot which was definitely not the Japanese would do. The udon tasted alright (not that Kansai style unfortunately), not impressive at all and the portion was small. We ordered two Okonomiyaki: One Special (with seafood and kimchi) and one pork. I think they’d better put on a bit more mayo on the surface in order to balance the saltiness of the okonomi sauce. And it seems there was too much sauce cooked with the seafood in the Special that made the okonoyaki too wet. Service was attentive. Meanwhile, sorry don’t think will visit again.

Nice izakaya! We really enjoyed our hot sake! We had umasu aubergine, fried omelette yakisoba and the Yaki-udon beef/kimchi! We didn’t skip the dessert! We had yuzu cheesecake! Everything well prepared and delicious!

This is one of the two locations in Brixton. I went with a friend for lunch. We had one main each (we basically shared one yakisoba and one yakiudon, both delicious). We also shared one starter and one dessert, and had one glass of hot yuzu sake each. Very reasonable price (£30 pp). Highly recommended.

one of my favourite restaurants! really cute inside and the service is always amazing, all the ladies that have served me here have been lovely! some of my favourites would be the okra and crispy pork and the beef and kimchi teppenyaki. Both the noodle dishes are great but i love the thin omelette the omu is wrapped in and the okonomiyaki is always good and so filling! prices are also very reasonable :)

Ok but nothing special. The male server was not rude but also not helpful at all. I don’t think he even really spoke at all, just plonked stuff down on the table. Wouldn’t recommend going here.

Amazing OKONOMIYAKI& Outstanding Service at OKAN Brixton East We visited OKAN Brixton East last Sunday, and I can’t express how much we loved the experience. We had the Tokyo Shoyu Ramen, and it was simply divine—rich, flavorful broth with perfectly cooked noodles. The balance of savory and umami flavors was spot on, making it one of the best bowls of ramen we’ve ever had. What made our visit even more enjoyable was the impeccable service from our waitress, a charming Indian woman who truly stood out. She was incredibly attentive, friendly, and engaging, with a warm smile that made us feel instantly welcome. Her professionalism and ability to anticipate our needs were remarkable, yet she managed to bring a personal touch to every interaction. It’s rare to find someone who can make you feel both ease ,she made it look effortless. She gave excellent recommendations and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. Her positive energy really elevated the entire dining experience. OKAN Brixton East, you’ve nailed both food and service—thank you for an unforgettable Sunday meal. We’ll definitely be back soon!

Very happy to find this little lovely place for okonomiyaki which brings me all the memories I had in Japan. The manager Akiko is very hospitable and friendly, making us delicious high ball to go with our food. The place is filled with happy customers! No wonder this is just one of the 4 branches they have in London 🇬🇧

Been to another Okan before and enjoyed it, but the food at this one wasn’t great. My husband’s prawn, squid and kimchi noodles - no kimchi, 3 prawns and 2 pieces of squid. Basically just a plate of plain noodles and beansprouts? For the price you expect more.

Should've gone to McDonalds! Worst Japanese meal ever. Very Disappointing. Everything was bland and inauthentic. A curry udon that tasted of nothing but Chinese Five Spice with maybe 5 pieces of very thinly sliced beef. A Miso Udon was equally underwhelming and had to drowned in soy sauce. A squid and prawn noodle dish contained all of two prawns and required soy sauce just to make it taste of anything. When we asked for chilli sauce we were told we would have to pay extra. No thanks! An aubergine starter was extremely undercooked (raw) a grilled chicken start (£10) was more padron pepper than chicken; a measly portion! The kimchi had no kick. I'd be embarrassed to serve this kind of food and call it authentic or delicious. The one saving grace of this 'meal'? We shan't be returning. Ever!

Disappointing, not up to Japanese standards

staff were super inattentive, we were the only table and it took more than 10 minutes to take our orders. we had the miso onigiri and the seafood Okonomiyaki. food pricing is ok but they’re both too salty. it’s a generous amount of miso which is good, but please adjust the portion so that it’s edible. disappointed and will not visit again.

Great restaurant, delicious food ! We had the pork gyoza, okra, onasu, and spicy miso udon and it was all delicious. Lovely service and nice neighbourhood feel. Asahi on tap also a bonus.

Excellent food, but unfortunately, the service was disappointing. Had to ask for everything, including napkins, cutlery, etc. Drinks were forgotten. 3 out of 4 dishes did not have the ordered ingredients, and one was served lukewarm and was sent back for heating. The experience would have been a lot better if the service had matched up to the food quality.

Absolutely shocking service from the minute we arrived.. The staff were so rude and not accommodating to the simple request of extending the table with a free table nearby as we were having more guests arriving to eat. We had to go inside to order food and drinks, ask them to serve us, it took forever for the food to come when it was eventually ordered, and finally, one of our party ordered rice and chicken, and the chicken arrived at the end of all of us dining, so she had a bowl of rice for dinner.. To top it off, the rude waitress refused to take off the chicken that arrived as we were getting up to leave.. And ultimately very uninspiring food. Never again.

The portion is very small, the food is served very slowly, and it’s not delicious.

Cheryl made the experience so amazing, gave us great recommendations. Can definitely recommend the Unagi Onigiri. Had lovely noodles and beer. Great place to catch up with a friend!

Me and my family had a lovely time here at Brixton East's OKAN, the food was fresh, delicious & made with care but most memorable was the service & people inspite it being a cute small place and manned by only 3 people (1 of which is the chef constantly cooking) the staff all manage to make it feel personally inviting! Special mention in this regard goes to Emi / Cheryl our server she was so gracious and polite and had a real warmth to her character that made me and my families time so memorable! Arigato Gozaimasu! 🙇🏻‍♂️

The wagyu okonomiyaki is the best meal I can remember in a long time. Takuma was very helpful in going through the menu and giving his recommendations. Also much quieter than the restaurant in Brixton Village.

Went for lunch on a bank holiday weekend. The service was quite slow, but there was only one person taking orders, cooking and I assume washing dishes as well, so the place was understaffed. It took a long time for the food to arrive. I hope more people can be on staff to support the service next time. The food itself came in large portions. I ordered the beef noodle okonomiyaki. I felt the okonomiyaki had too much okonomiyaki sauce and was too salty. Not enough beef and the beef was overcooked and tough.

Absolutely perfect meal. Takuma looked after us so well, lovely guy. Not been before but will be going back very soon! All the food was great but the eel onigiri special was incredible! A must try if they have it!

It's everything a local place should be, accessible, unfussy, friendly, great service, well kept, great decor. I've come at various times, often stop on my own when I'm between things or late home or just passing and don't feel like cooking :) The food is always good, especially okonomyaki, always specials, range of sake is great. Tonight had an unfiltered sake which was delicious, service from Sakura was great, she's been here two years and according to the grapevine is something of a legend! As a great man said... I'll be back.

Plan has been one of our favourite restaurants since moving to London. The spicy udon miso is a balm for the soul and the onigiri is just a delight. Takuma and the reast of the team are lovely hosts. Try the plum wine. Oof yummy!

Great cozy place in brixton, delicious sake and amazing japanese tapas, if you want to try real japanese food not only sushi oriented, this is your place. Many veggie options. Takuma was a great waiter and explained very carefully all the dishes and recommendations. Really enjoyed it!
