Octopus Lounge in Newport

Thought we would give this place a try not the best to find / park once we got close we didn’t even think it was open it was abandoned we went on in and straight away we was hit with a massive stenchy smell of a butchers shop along with a mix up of grease my partner then decided it was best we left quick so got out of there

Had the valentine savoury/sweet picnic benches. Hot food and the desserts were lovely. Maybe just check in to see everything is ok. Would return and good to support local businesses.

Booked here for hot festive bench for 3 of us. 1 vegan, 1 gluten free and 1 standard. Server was friendly and messages to book were all helpful and friendly. All benches were enjoyed with good options. The vegan main bench wasn't as full as the other two but everything was tasty. The gluten free sweet bench wasn't as full as the other but again enjoyed. Sat by a heater which was nice otherwise I think i'd have been cold. Maybe a bit overpriced (£25pp) for what you get but we all had a good time and it is something a little different. Good portion for lunch/brunch.

Hot food was cold, a small Yorkshire with a little bit of meat and stuffing inside, 3 mini pigs in blankets snd 2 Brie things. Little amount of hot food, Cakes selection was good and a good amount I think this place should stick to cakes as the hot brunch certainly wasn’t a hit and was very expensive for what we actually had I terms of hot food! They made it look bigger on the pictures Wouldn’t return I wasn’t going to do a review but if I can save some wasting money on the hot dining bench that’s great as it was a waste of money.

We had the hot dining benches which were lovely. The service however was poor. We were half an hour early but asked if we could sit down anyway, no one else was in there. Not a problem. After 15 mins we went and asked if we could order drinks, which we would pay for. We were told our unlimited drinks couldn't be served before our time of 12.30, that was fine we were happy to pay. The hot dining benches arrived around 12.45pm. To be fair they were lovely & the food all piping hot. There was 4 other tables by this point. I had to go and ask for our tea & coffee. This didn't arrive until we had finished the savoury benches. The table was half cleared & then the dessert plates came out with no where to put them. We never got offered another drink & weren't asked once if everything was OK etc. Even when getting up to leave there was no goodbyes or anything from the staff that were stood by the counter.

Took my niece and nephew for ice cream here. Nephew (7 years old) was stuck between flavours and politely and confidently asked if he could sample one of his choices before deciding, but he was told that they didn't do samples. Fair enough if this was being said to an adult, but to a child it really knocked his confidence. Particularly as previously when he visited a different dessert place in the city and when stuck between choices, he was offered a sample.

Came here with my friend and both of our children for the sundae school, what a fantastic idea!!!!!! Children got to make their own sundae… the ice cream is the best I’ve tasted. Absolutely fantastic hosts and will definitely return

We enjoyed the ‘Hot Dining Bench’ which along with the service was fantastic. As for the selection of taster festive desserts and my sweet tooth, I was in my element. Gareth & Sarah were great hosts and we will be returning to enjoy their food, company and good honest service. This was a great finish to a great weekend in Cardiff & Newport.

Fantastic atmosphere Fantastic sense of Humour Excellent Chicken and Bacon Paninis. Dave who probably is not a Dave warms to my humour. Wish they were open Mondays and Tuesdays. Also wish they would do evening meals Ala Carte. Mary, Daves wife tells me it is coming along with bottles of Jam Shed Shiraz. Cant wait.

Took the boys and my nephew for brunch. Food was cooked fresh to order. I immediately regretted not ordering the waffles. Food was served quickly and absolutely delicious. Will definitely return. What a find!

Visited yesterday for a catch up with 2 friends . I had xl breakfast, the others had a pizza and the loaded fries …. We then followed it off with overloaded waffles … portions were satisfying, food was tasty it’s just a shame it’s out of the way and kind of hidden. Looking forward to our next visit

When it’s just soft whip ice cream with “cookie dough” syrup over it. Considering there is a full range of Joe’s ice cream available, with cookie dough being one of the flavours, I think it’s fair to assume that we were expecting more than soft whip and syrup (flake and wafer comes as standard). Staff were fine and gave us a refund but it was a shame as we were really looking to going and having a fab ice cream sundae 😞

I want to be kind about this place but to be honest I don’t know how it survives. It’s not easy to find, being off the road on a footpath along the river. We’ve visited twice for breakfast and been the only customers and I’ve often walked past and it’s been empty. The coffee is mediocre, the bacon roll average, cleanliness not brilliant and the furnishings are a bit worn and shoddy. The staff are pleasant and I’m sure it’s probably great for ice creams on a sunny day. Should be a nice venue for evening dining too but I can’t comment on that. But I really wish them luck. Newport needs decent cafes/eateries.

Had another smashing breakfast this morning! Complete range of breakfasts between us: full cooked; avocado and mushrooms on ciabatta; and, a freshly made waffles with bacon and maple syrup. All were freshly cooked and absolutely delicious! We've also been here later in the day for ice cream sundaes and other sweet treats. The range is phenomenal and, if it's not on the menu, the staff are fantastic and will probably create it for you! Great location on the Newport Riverfront walk. Perfect to walk off the ice cream afterwards! 👍

This is such a nice, welcoming and friendly cafe. The staff were incredibly kind and the food delicious. I 100% recommend going if you're in Newport or by the river. Perfect spot for any occasion.

Came by on a weekday just after lunch, so it was really quiet. Was greeted by a number of staff within seconds of arriving and made to feel very welcome throughout. I had a cheeseburger and a coffee, both of which were of great quality and quantity, topped off by a really nice Turkish Delight ice cream. Lovely location and views, topped off with the great customer service made the whole experience perfect. Would highly recommend.
