it does not give a good impression of a nice place to stay when you walk into a hotel and the staircase is covered in black duct tape to patch the holes in the carpets.

We were gifted a two night stay in the hotel, the rooms were clean and warm. The staff attentive, polite and pleasant from the girl on the door, the waiting staff and domestic staff. The food good value for money. Smashing breakfast enough to set u up for the day. Some folk on here complaining about the cosmetic issues of the hotel, the building is old and to be renovated. This in no way devalued our experience and to be honest pretty petty if you ask me!

I booked a 2 night stay and upgraded to a feature room, which i was looking forward too.We arrived at the hotel just after 3pm to check in to be greeted by the receptionist who no matter what noise cough he did not look round or offer any help. A lady who was facing him asked if we were being looked after, we politely said no not yet thinking she was a staff member. The receptionist turned round and said oh i am on my own my colleague is not here. The lady requested her coffees for her conference and was told by him oh I'm the receptionist i don't do that job. still waiting to be checked in or even spoken to, another staff member appeared a pleasant man (he wore glasses) who tried to check us in while the other receptionist began having a conversation about keys which apparently was more important to the first receptionist than customers. Eventually the recepionist managed to get us checked in. I was disappointed with the room considering i had payed an extra £20 per night for an upgrade. cheekily i was told that for a Friday night stay there is normally a £10 surcharge. To be honest I would have been horrified even more if i had been charged more on top of the upgrade. The room was in very poor condition, we couldn't even open the windows. The one good thing was the thick bath towels in the room. But the decor leaves a lot to be desired. Definitely not worth the money. There was no hot water to have a shower on the final morning. I requested an iron and board on Thursday from the rude male receptionist. He said it would take 15 mins, no problem we said. We requested it a further 2 occasions. He was rude and lied, he stated that someone had come to the room and got no answer which is a lie, then he said when we requested it again that oh he had called the room and it rang out. i explained thats strange since i have been calling the reception desk getting no answer. His explanation then to me was he would have to go round the floors to see if anyone had left an iron outside of their room. I asked when he would do that or had he. He cheekily said we only have 3 irons in the hotel. I hate to say that this rude receptionist has put me off staying again in the hotel. its unfortunate as the other male receptionist (with glasses) and the female who checked us out on Saturday were very polite and friendly. The maid when i spoke to her in the corridor unfortunately couldn't understand english she said. We aren't drinkers but it would have been nice to have a night cap in the hotel bar, unfortunately the bar closes at 11pm even for guests. Bar staff didn't explain or even speak. The bar staff were a bit off too, no friendly smiles etc. Quite strange. The locals in the bar and restruaunt we went to were very friendly and aware that a simple smile means so much. This put us off eating in the restaurant to be honest. The hotel does need an upgrade. Still trying to work out why room 217 was a feature room. Maybe the gaps in the window, mould or rot on the window frame or seat or maybe the damp (think thats what it was) round the wall sockets. The up side is there is a lift if you need it, the breakfast room was nice. i marked it average as the pleasant staff on the reception desk gentleman with glasses and the maid who got got us the iron to our room on Friday and the helpful lady (maid )who was in the corridor on our arrival and gave us directions to our room. Also that the room was reasonably clean. Otherwise i would rate it lower. The room was either cold or to hot. The curtains were pointless, didn't stop the light or any of the draft coming through the holes in the window frame. Thankfully didn't see the rude male receptionist with dark hair again. Hopefully this is helpful.

We stayed at the hotel on a four night winter break booked through their January Sale Deal. It was excellent Value and welcomed our little dog. A dog bowl and some dog bedding mats were in the room when we arrived and although we had our own with us I felt this was a nice welcoming touch. The breakfast was excellent and served to us in the Caledonian Café as dogs are not permitted in the restaurant (which we fully appreciate). We had dinner in the Caledonian Café which was excellent. The hotel was beautifully clean, warm and welcoming. The twin room we had was to the back of the hotel. The room was spacious, clean and warm. The staff were all lovely and we will definitely return to this hotel.

This was our second visit this year out of holiday season and we stayed for several nights. This is a truly beautiful part of the world, with breathtaking scenery. The hotel is within easy reach of many attractions and the harbour is lovely. As the manager mentioned in response to my previous review, there's an extensive re-decoration and re-fit of the the hotel underway and this is starting to pay dividends. We had a lovely feature room with a newly done-out bathroom. We thought we were really onto a winner, especially since the breakfasts on the first few days were also a real improvement on previous experiences and the staff were more friendly than usual, if a little reserved. However, we were once again disappointed on our final couple of days in Oban in a manner that seems to be a pattern for this hotel. After a long day out we returned to find that no-one had been in to tidy our room and bathroom, replace our milk and tea supplies or empty our bin. We're pretty tidy people and these are basic services. The next morning, the staff in the breakfast room were different and not as helpful as their colleagues - this was reflected in the service and the food. Some of the breakfast items appeared re-heated, we were brought the wrong items and then had to wait a very long time. I am a massive fan of what this hotel could be. Clearly there are improvements being made but yet again I leave feeling so positive about the area and quite deflated about the hotel.

The toastie had too much cheese in it and it went soggy. Then to my horror I found 2 big black hairs in the salad. I just left then. Will not be back

Popped into Caledonian thinking we would get a quick lunch whilst exploring the city. Two people ordered soup of the day (lentil), two ordered sandwiches at which point we were informed that the soup came with sandwiches! Not wishing to look a gift horse in the mouth one of the group then ordered nothing thinking they would eat the extra (soup qualified) sandwiches. The fourth person in our family stuck with their original order of a sandwich, which was very nice. However the ham and mustard sandwiches which came with the soup were appalling. The mustard was far too strong for the processed ham and how to eat it in tandem with Lentil soup? Just dreadful. The soup was delicious, but they need to adjust their thinking on extras.

Excellent value deal with a feature room. Clean, comfortable and best views ever over the harbour. Yes its a bit dated but adds to character. Would think twice if we had to pay full price for sea view.Breakfast when we eventually got this was very good - wouldn't like to see it busy. Nibbled on the continental buffet while we waited. Asked for a croissant as plate empty at 9.15, advised at 10 breakfast finished - no croissants.!! We had arrived in Oban earlier than expected on a Sunday and started walking around the town, searching for a breakfast place near the ferry terminal. The Caledonia stood out prominently so we entered the luxuriously appointed lobby and were ushered into the dining room. Given a choice between the cold breakfast buffet or a cooked to order breakfast, we chose the cooked to order. Very good and a beautiful view of the harbor.

On arrival we managed to park our car directly outside the hotel (as we arrived after 6pm), Parking is free until 9.30am the following morning. The receptionist on that evening was extremely helpful, he advised us that the standard rooms were all fully booked and had upgraded us to a sea view. He asked if we need access to the Wifi and then provided us with codes that would cover our length of stay. The room that we had was very nice with a lovely view over the bay, room was tidy and clean and had all the necessary facilities required. DOG OWNERS INTENDING BRINGING THEIR PET TO THIS HOTEL PLEASE READ THISI decided to write a review for this place as I have noted someone else remarked how well they were recieved with a pet.Okay here goes, We bought a deal to stay at the Caladonian Hotel through "itison" for an overnight stay. We decidecd to take our pet dog (small spaniel). My partner phoned the hotel prior to make sure all was fine with bringing pets. They assured us yes however would have to pay a suppliment for the dog which we did not hestitate to do so. They did not disclose the following remarks. On our arrival at the reception we were greeted by a friendly host and were booked in accordingly. After that it all went downhill from there. When we attended evening meal we were informed that our dog could not stay in the room and had to come with us. We were then shown through to an empty cold isolated room alone with no atmosphere or music. We were placed a few yards next to the kitchen where we could here the on going clanking and movements from the staff working. After the meal we asked if we could have a drink in the bar area but were refused because we had the dog. However if we wished to do so we could sit in the same empty room from where we had just eaten in. We declined this and decided to head into town where we were all given a warm welcome at other establishments. The following morning my partner asked the reception staff where we had to go for breakfast as we could not leave our dog in the room. He advised that since the room we were in the previous night for evening meal was closed then it would be okay to allow us to take our dog into the main dining area just for breakfast. As we entered the brekfast area we were stopped by a female staff member who patronisingly said we could not bring the dog with us. My partner explained to her that the reception staff had ok'd our dog to come in but she refused and she asked us to wait further and she would go and set up a table in the empty room where we had eaten the previous night. I decided enough was enough and declined any further hospitality from the place. We booked out 15 mins later. My partner passed her concerns to the staff at reception who duly listen before replying that this was hotel policy.Overall : This place was a nightmare if you have a pet. They have no real arrangements made at all.THEY DO NOT MAKE YOU FEEL WELCOME AND WILL TREAT YOU LIKE A LEPERIf they had given this imformation over the phone prior to our arrival then we most likely would have booked elsewhere. FOOD : OK 2/5 ROOM : Clean but tired looking (Curtains broken) Squeaky bed.Bottle of complimentary red or white wine on our arrival had already been chosen for us.......and already openedHotel Interior Appearance (Upper and stairwell) Worn carpets, misted and dirty windowsHotel exterior Apperance dated and tired (Circa 1970's) Staff were all friendly but you can sense they see and feel the way we were treated. An old scottish word to describe the experience we recieved "GADZ"I am sure the management will have some kind of excuse at the ready after my post. But please be aware of my comments if you intend to bring your pet. Thank you.

We stayed here for 3 nights, the only good thing I can say is that the bed was clean. The windows were dirty, from the inside, dust everywhere, the shower didn't work, the toilet door lock didn't lock and the door would just open on it's own. Whether it's subsiding but our room was on a slope and so was the bathroom. It had stripy wallpaper so all the furniture plus lamp were all leaning to one side... As for the food, we only had breakfast and it was awful... It's such a shame because it's such a wonderful building and it's in a prime position.. It really needs a bit of money pending on it to justify what it costs to stay there. When we were checking out they didn't ask how our stay was they just said you're getting some money refunded because of the faults.

After almost 2 weeks touring Scotland this was our first awful and very disappointing experience! Until now we had only good and very good experiences.Arriving late afternoon in Oban, we only wanted a cup of tea and a coffee and something to eat with it. The "restaurant" is in a part of the old fashioned hotel and looked quite good to us. First thing you had to order and pay at the bar before being served (a bit like in a pub), but this was the restaurant of the hotel ! The single espresso - that I had to take myself to our table - came in a big cup (!!!) which is not only ugly but also got it cold in no time. My tea was in a tiny pot which filled exactly one and a half of a tiny tea-cup. The apple crumble arrived "only" more than 15 minutes after the coffee and my partner didn't eat even half of it so good was its taste: the custard didn't have any taste, the crumble was a soggy mess, the apples just boring and tasteless ... - of course no one of the staff asked why he didn't finish and left more than the half of it. My garlic bread consisted of 2 tiny slices of bread toasted and sprinkled with some morsels of parsley and garlic (as I'm a vegan this was the only option to get at least something to eat). While we were waiting we had the afterthought that you had to pay first because otherwise you wouldn't wait for "hours" to be served ! (Do you think it surprising that the reception didn't had a business card?)If you can than try to go somewhere else when in Oban !!!

We were treated to the local high school's marching/pipe band that was performing outside and then literally walking through the dining room/bar where we were seated while they played. That was exciting and they were great!

We stayed here for one night. The location is across the street from the train station thus a good location for visiting this small sea port town. The room was clean as was the bathroom. I had trouble working the shower but the front desk person came up and helped me. The internet connected ok but all the web sites came up "this page can't be displayed". The TV surely dates from the early 50's. The whole hotel sorely needs a make over.

Popped in for cream tea on easter Saturday which we enjoyed and was reasonably priced at £5.90 for two.Went back for sunday lunch but wasn't at all impressed. The food was cold and was not enough and for some reason they decided to make the veg into a ratatouille which was awful. The menu stated gammon potatoes and veg so we expected a nice home made dinner but to be honest it was awful and not worth the price of £9.95 for two courses. The Eton mess didn't even resemble Eton mess it was a mush of cream and strawberry jam.All the staff were foreign and struggled with even basic English. We expected more from a sea front hotel

Came in with my girlfriend and to be honest it wasn't great. We both had the 1/2 chicken which came with barely any vegetables with no option of extras.Service wasn't the best either, we expected a little more from a hotel associated restaurant.

My partner and I popped in for a cream tea whilst on a mini break to Oban. Oh my giddy aunt - how can such a beautiful place get such a simple thing so wrong. The cream was so old it had almost turned to powder. The scones had the appearance of really cheap budget supermarket variety and the jam was a congealed mess of the cheapest, nastiest strawberry flavoured (I say that because be assured there were no strawberries in it) jam known to man.The scones were stone cold and crumbled into a hundred bits with the one knife between two (I kid you not) provided to spread the revolting jam and cream. Sure it was cheap enough but I'd rather pay more for better. Never again

Food was great but service was just awful.. very Fawlty Towers...quite entertaining. They have great offers on the menu and the prices are surprising good considering the "upmarket" impression given by the hotel and the lovely location.

Came in here for dinner with my Gran. We were staying at another hotel at the time. Everybody was very friendly but sadly it seemed that they were quite understaffed, yet they were all so nice and worked so hard that they almost made up for it. The food was quite good. I had a starter - The Brie wedges with a coating (maybe garlic and rosemary) and red pepper salsa - and it was brilliant! (and pretty). For the main I had a chicken tikka masala although i'm sad to say it was nothing special. My gran had haddock and chips and I thought that was brilliant though (and massive). We both had dessert although I didn't think there was a wide selection. The food was all quite simple. I would say this was a reasonable place with a nice atmosphere (and really comfy seats).

In the heart of the town right across from the train station and port. However we felt for £155 a night we were ripped off !! Room was large and bathroom also. But wallpaper was coming away from the walls and the bathroom could do with a revamp and grouting. We paid extra for a sea view ( advice from this website) and glad we did ! But just didn't feel it was worth so much ! Staff were helpful and friendly ! I'd book a table in town for a meal as its busy this time of year.

The hotel is in a perfect location. The room was OK but was not properly serviced - tea cups not washed and bed straightened rather than re-made. Food OK. Lounge looked nice but none of the sofas were comfortable.

In our opinion not recommended The location is ok, right in the center. Some of the hotel's own parking spaces are in front of the door We didn't like anything else in this hotel. It was probably the worst hotel on our entire UK trip. We booked a better room with a view. I don't want to know what the standard rooms in this hotel are supposed to be like, but the room we got was dark, very worn and very dirty. Even though the relatively friendly manager at the reception assured us that it was the best room in the hotel, we don't want to believe him: firstly, because it would be a real shame for the entire hotel, and secondly, because it's not true: us We've already seen that there were rooms facing the sea in the same category, where it certainly wasn't as loud. And our room had a window facing the promenade with several bars and cafes, so it was very loud until late at night

Best part: rice is available Worst part: butter chicken tastes sweet, like coconut, like a pumpkin soup. With pieces of chicken floating in watery broth. As an asian tourist, i recommend you come here only if you need some rice in your system

Food was of a high standard and reasonably priced. The mussels were the biggest and plumpest I've had in a long time. Would definitely recommend although they do add a service charge on to the bill automatically, irrespective of the size of your party. It's a bit presumptuous, but i assume you can ask for it to be taken off.

Great ice-cream parlour! Lots to choose from! But it's overpriced for what it is frozen water and flavour can't be expensive! To make but it's alright I would recommend this place more than "vanilla" next door 🚪
