O Português in Reading

This place keeps coming for me to review. It has been closed up for quite a while.

Fantastic food, service and atmosphere!

I was there for a quick lunch and have to say for a Portuguese was good but not great . I was expecting a bit better quality presentation for the good. The taste was good but again they could do better I will hopefully try to go again and see if it was because of the time I went.

Called the restaurant before ordering the food to have some recommendations and the person didnt help that much at all. Literally started to read the menu by phone and finishing every sentence with the word friend in the end. Not very professional but thats kind of ok. However when the food arrived my wife and i got very surprised. We did order "camarao a alijo" and "octopus salad" to eat at home. Opening the boxes was when everything started to go down serious for our surprise the box of "camarao a alijo" we only got 5 shrimps in total (with their gut still inside which means they weren't open prior to cooking and it can be dangerous to your health) which is kind of sad since we ask to the lady if it was something we could share the lady replied "yes absolutely". Then the "octopus salad" which I don't understand why its called like this since its kind of a mission impossible to find a piece of octopus in all that "onion and peppers salad". We have been in this restaurant before and it was totally the opposite experience, definitely never ordering back again at least. To add to all of this we payed £25 for 2 starters which is absolutely ridiculous attending the quantity and quality of the food delivered.

I had a bad experience... Bacalhau à lagareiro was very salty. Lack of hygiene in the bathroom and I got very cold inside the restaurant!

We loved it. Having lived in Portugal and my wife being Portuguese, this is the closest we've come to being back in Lisbon for a long time. We had a mix of meat and fish dishes as well as a number of entradas, all were great and the family that run the restaurant are lovely. Highly recommended.

Top customer service, the owners and staff are super attentive, always with a smile ready to serve you....

Every time I come back here it onlw gets worse. The interesting items on the menu are always unavailable. If you can't buy it in a normal English supermarket chances are they will not have it. If it requires anything more that dropping it on a grill or basic cooking, they don't have it, even though it is on the menu. To top it all, they wait until your entire table finished choosing before telling you what is not available. No Portuguese beer on draft. They had only 1 red wine which is served by the glass and is a below average Portuguese wine. To top it all, the heater was off and they kept opening up the fire exit to alow people to go outside and smoke. The restaurant was absolutely freezing. This is right now the worst Portuguese restaurant from all the ones I have tried in London, Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire.

This place is amazing and the food is literally special. I’m Italian and I can say that this rice was so good. Recommend everyone to come here. The Staff is also great!

This may be a good or a bad restaurant, but certainly Portuguese it is not. It would be better to call it a Lusophone restaurant.

Always like to go here for a Portuguese coffee whenever I am around in Reading.

Great take out and cafe options in the day time. I look forward to going back to try their evening options. One of Reading's under appreciated restaurants that you MUST visit!

Excellent service and excellent food..

It is ok. Service is slow, we had to pay at the till after 15 min. waiting for the bill. The sausage as entry was undercooked. The Bacalhau com Natas was good. The music is the worst, laud and awful taste.

Lovely food to eat in or takeaway. Right next to the park so a great place to head to on a summers day. The staff are really friendly and do great beer!! Thanks

Authentic Portuguese restaurant run by a really friendly team. Good fish options, probably don't go if you are veggie or vegan. I had the classic Bacalhau a Braz and it was great. Portions are generous, nice desserts. A really nice find in Reading especially if you love Portugal. Deli counter full of pastries- you can pop in to buy them as well.

Delicious food. Nice location. Service was kinda slow. Would be nice to have some chicken options ( only in the kids section there's some chicken breast)

For a Portuguese restaurant this is a disappointing! Imagine going to a Portuguese restaurant and they never have cod , its like going to Italy and theres no more pasta available. The staff were so unpleasant and rude, 80% of the menu were unavailable. The toilet was quite disgusting, unfortunately this is not a Portuguese restaurant.

Rude, unwelcoming staff. Place was empty and instead of assisting, three waitresses dancing and looking at videos by the till. Really had to push for service and the staff cannot describe the menu at all.

The first the food is fantastic and the service good. The portions are filling and even on Sunday they are busy so pre book to avoid waiting for a table but definitely worth a visit in Reading for a good meal and fine music for atmosphere.

Staff is very nice but all the times we have been there they never have the food or starters we ask for. We have to always choose something else. Maybe is best to reduce the menu instead of saying to the customer that you don't have what they want all the time.

There is a bit of Portugal in Reading. It is called O Portugues. Amazing food that tastes great. Friendly and efficient service. This was our first visit but we will be back soon.

Manned by Portuguese speaking people and offering am array of Portuguese national items, it is a good establishment to drown out feeling of home sickness.

Our first visit, and what a memorable one. The staff couldn't have been more friendly or welcoming, despite us arriving late and the kitchen being on the point of closing. The food quality and the standard of cooking was exceptional. That, and the normal generously sized helpings, as is the Portuguese norm, left us full and very satisfied. It was the sixtieth birthday for one of our party an, to round the meal off, all of the staff paraded to our table with a cake, singing "Happy Birthday." It's a pity that the The Reading Room in The Roseate didn't extend the same welcome on the previous evening, despite being aware it was a sixtieth birthday. Full marks to O Português and we are looking forwards to our next visit.

Great coffee, friendly and welcoming.

Could be a good place , first of , they should really decide , they either do delivery or they open the restaurant, both they can't really cope. We asked for drinks and food at the same time drinks took 25 minutes to arrive , Food came 1 hour and 10 minutes mark (the entrance ) main plate arrived half hour later. They got my order wrong, the rice was soaked in oil , the good part was th pork ribs ( only thing I ate ) My wife they didn't even bothered to serve because they forgot to make the order / or it was missing from when we asked ( the girl confirmed the order twice ) Half of the menu was unavailable because of the delivery , and to be honest their variation were poor for my taste. We're a simple rice with beef and fries bring charged 15 pounds and I could have done it for like 4 pounds at home , but I guess you pay for the service ( being sarcastic )

Amazing food, amazing staff, amazing cocktails and great place. What more can you ask. We were blown away by how amazing the service was and how kind all the staff were. Unfortunately we couldn't finish our meal with the rest of the party as my daughter was unwell. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating. When we for home we could finally enjoy the food and it delicious and portions were generous. Thank you all to the staff for being so amazingly kind tonight and hats off to the chefs.

Long wait for food, rude aggressive staff, unhelpful and billed incorrectly. We have visited here a few times for the cafe and had no issues. Last night 10 of us went for dinner, we waited around 20 minutes for drinks to be bought to the table and 15 minutes after taking our food order they came to tell us they had no hot dogs for one of the meals. One dish had an issue which we highlighted to the staff, everyone else enjoyed their food. Staff made such a big deal about the issue meal that they even got the chef out to argue with us! The manager stated that he doesn't take criticism very well and that their food is the best. Kids menu states a meal and dessert is £6.95, on the bill we were charged £6.50 for the meal and £4 for the dessert! We ended up with 4 bills as the manager couldn't work his own till. One female staff constantly rolls her eyes at you and speaks with so much attitude! One of our children is extremely fussy and would only eat fish fingers, dinner came out and they were fishcakes not fish fingers, might not sound like a big deal but our son would not eat them and ultimately it is false advertising!! They will need to work on taking criticism as they wont always get it right, they will loose a lot of customers if they continue to treat customers like that, we certainly wont be returning. Also £3.95 for a 330ml bottle of Superbock? We also ordered a cake as we were there to celebrate a birthday, the cake had the wrong name on it and wasn't particularly nice! Not a great experience overall!

They charged me as a special dish ( almost double) when I requested them the dish of the day which is half price. And when I asked more details, they told that their dish was the best in The UK. 😊 I have eaten better Feijoada for less price in UK. Don't order Feijoada if you don't want to end up paying 17.50 for it.

My first time time there today... it was so good, the place so good looking and tidy...friendly staff and the food just amazing...If you go there, go with time, not because they are lazy, it's because good food takes a while to be prepared...I love it and I strongly recommend...please keep up with the good work...I will definitely go back there again...many thanks....Vicente

I’ve been to this restaurant, 3 times and every single time I had to wait 1:30 hours for my food, the first time the food was very oily and the other times a bit salty, one of the times i asked for a sangria and it tasted like water, send it back and when it came back tasted exactly the same! The staff are nice apart from one of the owners, she is unfriendly, rude and arrogant, I do not recommend this restaurant and I’m not coming back

The waitress doesn't speak english in a restaurant situated in England, bad move. Barely understand what she is saying. Long waiting for the order to be taken, and after you canceling the order because they have nothing available in the menu, you waking up with the order, obviously not as you asked for it. Food is tasteless, not done as required and overall bad bad bad, never again! One star is too much!

One of my favourites in Reading. The food is excellent, home cooked, authentic and great value. The service is friendly, quite relaxed.

Food was INCREDIBLE! I went with my partner who is Brazilian, so I could practice my Portuguese. The staff were so friendly, patient and supportive with me placing our order in my beginners level. Muita obrigada!! I cannot wait to come back for more amazing food and Portuguese experience.

If you like a portuguese experience, this is it! Vibrant, noisy, friendly staff & traditional fayre. They answered phone in portuguese, which is fine if you speak language!

The food was tasty and something different than the usual fare available in reading, chicken had a great flavor but a little to charred for me still ate it 😋 worth a visit, has a nice bohemian atmosphere.

First time in the space, attentive service without a doubt. Exaggerated prices, a £3.50 SuperBock? The worst part was when I left I bought some cakes (£1.30 each😱) and when I get home happy to give them to my son I find that the cakes are dried out for at least 2 to 3 days... total disappointment and certainly my last visit to space.

The worst experience I have ever had. We booked a table for 4 people at 2 pm. We got there ten minutes late and they had already seated someone else. They asked us to wait for a while ( 20 minutes) but 30 minutes later we were not seated yet. Finally, half an hour after we arrived, we left the restaurant and the waitress did not even apologised for it. We ended up in another place were we could eat! They still have a lot to learn about how to treat a costumer. I am not sure if next time we book a table we have to trust that we will end up eating there or in another place.

Food was lovely, in traditional Portuguese style and staff friendly.

Of the portions we chose, steaks with mushrooms, alheira, shrimp wake up and grilled entremeada, I wouldn't choose the entremeada again as it was just 3 small strips, not enough to present in a restaurant. The atmosphere is great, the staff is excellent, very willing and friendly people, we really liked it! xx
