A small, very busy restaurant with welcoming and efficient staff. The menu is not large but offers a good variety that would offer something for everyone . Puddings particularly good, but all our dishes were well cooked . We recommend

Most wonderful dinner. The food was exceptional and the service excellent. The trout was one of the best fish dishes we have ever had. Overall could not find any room for improvement. Would certainly go again when in the area.

Had a lovely meal at Number Twenty One comprising fresh local ingredients served with a modern twist. Excellent options for vegetarians and meat eaters and the service was very friendly too. Thoroughly recommended but book ahead as it was full when we visited!

We just dropped in for dinner without reservation, rather than bar meal in our hotel. A small restaurant right in the town centre. Nice friendly staff. Quite a small but well thought out menu, which I like. BBQ mackerel followed by Salmon "schnitzel" were both delicious. If I want to be really picky, a wedge of lemon with the Mackerel and more garlic in the aioli needed, but hey . . The creme brulee was utterly delicious. Wine list is unremarkable but reasonably priced. Absolutely recommended. Go there!

We recently had dinner here with friends. It is essential to book in advance as the place is quite small. The table in the window is worth a request. The food was excellent and the waitresses were pleasant and helpful

My wife and I had the excellent pork rib, which was both generous in portion, and full of flavour - accompanied by an accomplished apple sauce [ ? with hints of fennel/aniseed], some brilliant part fried/part roasted potatoes and a creamy celeri strip side dish. A group of 8 of us visited Number Twenty One. I can honestly say it is some of the best food I have ever eaten at a restaurant! The service was excellent and it didn't cost the earth. I would definitely recommend a visit to this restaurant. I hope to visit again the next time I am in Machynlleth.

I've been eating at Number 21 since they opened but shamefully never written a review. My husband and I visited again tonight and I'm glad to say that the food was excellent as always . I had the mushrooms to start which were delicious and the beef main was beautifully cooked. Sam is an accomplished chef. Defintely the best restaurant in the area. Long may they continue. The staff are attentive and charming. A credit to Machynlleth.

We came for dinner on a busy Wednesday night for a romantic meal out we had 4 starters total (couldn't pick) so we had the mutton which was melt in the mouth amazing! Then we had the mushrooms on toast and the mushrooms come in an amazing little parcel which really locked in the flavour. We had aranchini starter and also the risotto starter which was amazing creamy and moorish.For mains we had the sticky glazed beef and the pork belly both of which were exceptional the beef in particular was out of this world. We also had 3 puddings as well (I know I know that's a lot of food for two people) the donut was so warming and comforting the mousse was smooth and indulgent, the crumble was an amazing take in the classic. All in all we were so incredibly full it was unreal. But what a night of amazing food.

We visited number twenty one on recommendation of two of our guests. We have passed by but never tried, we have definitely been missing out. We’re waited at the entrance to be greeted by a lovely young girl who asked us to wear a mask and sanitize our hands which we were very impressed with, she showed us to our table and gave us a drinks menu lots of good choices for non alcoholic drinks as I was driving. My partner chose a bottle of red wine which he really enjoyed, we ordered focaccia olive oil and balsamic and crab ravioli as a starter which was really nice focaccia was freshly made and the crab ravioli was amazing. We both ordered the lamb rump for main course which just melted in our mouths served pink the best lamb we have ever eaten. My partner had blackberry pavlova for a dessert which he said was full of flavour. We can’t recommend this restaurant enough and when we have friends come to visit us we will be visiting again . Well done to all the team fantastic atmosphere friendly service from a young team who make this a little gem. Congratulations to you all.

Second time eating here, this was my first dining experience out since lockdown and this venue handles the Covid safety precautions extremely well.Booked time slots are staggered to ensure people arrive at different times, tables are well spaced and the the setup reinforces that the venue is Covid Safe.All courses were excellent, however, I had to settle for the honeycomb ice cream (which was really nice) as there was only 1 crème brûlée left, so obviously had to let my mum have that. :)Will go back.

Didn't put a foot wrong. Everything rocked for a pleasurable dining experience. Despite the social distancing and hygeine requirements, we felt cherished and valued. I even broke my rule about no puddings for the affogato - awesome truffles!

Loved the reviews so booked an Anniversary dinner at Twenty One, the first Out Out dining experience since March when Covid-19 lock downs began. 100% satisfaction from booking to paying. Service was impeccable even with isolation screens, sanitizer etc. The Bistro Cafe style works. Modest menu, great food, sensible prices.Personal recommendation the Mussels followed by Pavlova desert.Highly recommend 2 people, 3 course with wine £80. No rush required just chillax and enjoy

We booked this for our anniversary whilst on a break in Mid Wales. From the off the telephone call was polite and reassuring re Covid safety. When we arrived we were asked to hand sanitise before being shown to our table. Unobtrusive Perspex screens are in place which make you feel safe without feeling clinical. The staff all wore masks though out service and were brilliant with table cleaning and hand sanitising.Now for the food. Delicious crab ravioli starters and superb Welsh lamb rump for mains. Not rushed nor left waiting. I wish we had have eaten here the night before as well as this is how you deliver superb food with a great level of safe friendly service. Many thanks

We've really missed Number 21: the amazing food, the atmosphere, the fab staff. We ate last night....and it was almost worth the looooong wait since March :) Steak, homemade burgers, halloumi and of course we had dessert...check out that blackberry pavlova. Solo visit as I’m passing through with work. Dinner was absolutely delicious, great friendly staff and the eat out to help out scheme made it incredibly cheap! Wonderful presentation and came out really quickly. I was lucky to get a table quite early outside, and it was getting busier as I left. I can understand why it’s a very popular place! Thank you!

We were lucky to get a table without booking at this superb restaurant and we were wowed by the food throughout our meal. There was a superb choice of dishes using regional produce and good quality ingredients that was expertly cooked and we thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation and make sure that you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Having just moved back into the area we were excited to see what this little place that is always packed had to offer. We eat out a lot and this place is way up there in all aspects. Ambience, staff interaction and food were all top notch. Great seeing a few locals in there too. If you’re in Mach then don’t miss out on lunch or dinner here. It’s a real treat.

Staying at The Royston for our wedding anniversary we opted to dine out. Clive recommended we try Twenty One and weren't disappointed. They kindly sat us in the window which I'm informed is the best table to be. As a starter my husband had the smoothest chicken liver pate ever, it melted on the tongue and packed a real punch! Myself and a friend had a starter from the specials of beetroot, goats cheese and sticky walnuts and our other friend had the whitebait. All of us left our plates clean. Maincourses were two rolled and stuffed pork belly with sweet potato and cabbage, duck from the specials board and the 20 day aged rump steak. Again all very delicious but perhaps our late lunch meant we couldn't completely clear our plates if we wanted pudding!The four of us shared 2 puddings, the honeycomb icecream with fresh honeycomb which was every bit as sweet and delicious at it sounds, and a vanilla affogato with dark chocolate truffles and in my opinion WOW!As we had a taxi booked we couldn't linger over coffee but we certainly weren't disappointed by our visit even if our waitress was concerned we didn't manage to eat our maincourses. Worth a visit if you are staying in the area.

We booked one day before our visit, for three people including requests for gluten free and vegan meals. On arrival, we were warmly welcomed, led to a perfect cosy table at the back, gluten free options explained and a hand written vegan menu offered. Brilliant! Starters - beetroot plate, celeriac and apple soup, v good. Mains - roast chicken; mushroom risotto with truffle oil; and local trout with greens. All excellent quality, local and seasonal and v enjoyable. One pudding only managed - chocolate truffles with cafe affogato. Drinks reasonably priced - Diamondback stout recommended.The staff are lovely, personable and did a fine job altogether. We spent a relaxing couple of hours, good atmosphere, good food and drink...we’re glad we went! Thankyou.

We visited as a party of six including two children to celebrate a birthday, everyone enjoyed their meal, and everything was cooked to perfection. The food overall was fantastic and there was excellent service though not it was not overbearing. We would thoroughly recommend this restaurant and we are now looking forward to our next visit.

Excellent lunch for the five of us. We had booked ahead for lunch on market day and were glad we did as the team had to turn away countless potential patrons who weren’t lucky enough to get a table.Would recommend the burgers, rarebit and chicken schnitzel -superbly crispy! The restaurant is small. We were squashed between three other tables effectively in the corridor to the kitchen with the loos also accessed from here.The portions are also small. We ate on a themed Mexican night but were underwhelmed. The massive plus was the hanger steak which I chose and had to swap half way through with my wife whose chicken wrap dish was so disappointing.

Stopped for a bit of light lunch , got a nice table in the corner the staff was super friendly we both decided to have Welsh Rarebit and it was very nice the only thing that spoiled it was the rock hard lump that it was cooked on I really wanted to ask for a steak knife to saw my way through it as the knife supplied was not up to the job . We visited Number 21 as part of our weekend away with our motorbike club. I contacted them (at very late notice) to book a table for a small group. Every member of staff from chef to manger did all they could to accommodate us and were a delight to deal with. Unfortunately the weather put off many of our group and after all their efforts it was just myself and my partner who made it for lunch. And we are so glad we did. What a beautiful resturaunt! Everything about it from the decor, the atmosphere, the staff and the food was outstanding. Compliments to the chef for our fish finger sandwich and courgette and feta frittata. The food options were original and exciting and we had a hard time deciding what to try. It is a shame we live over 3 hours away or we would definitely be back.Thank you all so much for taking the time to try and help us. We are just sorry more of our friends didn't come along.

We ate at number twenty one on recommendation of the place we were staying. The food was delicious and well priced for the quality. We tried to go back the following eve but unsurprisingly they were fully booked.

4 of us visited for lunch on a horribly rainy day when the cafe was pretty busy. Nonetheless, everything about this place was great!

We booked for a party of 6 for a birthday. I'm a vegetarian and there were two vegetarian mains options on the menu. Neither of them were very inspiring and I was told that one of the options was not available. That left the nettle risotto. After it came and after a few mouthfuls it was obviously undercooked and chalky. Everyone at the table tried a bit and agreed it was undercooked. Three quarters of the way through the meal the assistant manager asked if everything was ok I told her about my meal. She apologised and asked if she could get the chef to cook me something else. I explained that it was too late as I didn't want to eat on my own. She said that I wouldn't have to pay for my meal which in hindsight is no compensation for not eating. The waiting staff were fantastic throughout which is why the rating isn't lower.

Nice little cafe offering food selection of freshly prepared food and good coffee. What is surprising in a town with no banks and now only 2 cash points is they still prefer cash. I would have thought excepting debit cards for less than £10 would save the owners a long trip to the bank and pay for itself. We had to walk to the cashpoint and back before we could get two cups of coffee. Loses one star for this - sorry!

Came in for lunch on the offchance and what a delight!! Unpretentious place with welcoming staff and an inviting and inventive menu. Had the mackerel special which was exactly as we hoped, spanking fresh and perfectly cooked. I very rarely have pud but this place merited a try of a kir royale sorbet - sublime! We had a family reunion meal in this Bistro ,there were 6 of us one with complex food allergies and one vegetarian. The staff made us very welcome and bent over backwards to deal with the food allergy.

Overnight en route home to Cardiff and found a restaurant worthy of any city centre. Quite small but perfectly formed to coin a phrase. We had flat iron steak (quite tender) and Chiken Kiev. Yes I know it’s a throwback to the 60s but I was intrigued to see it! And it did not disappoint. Really tasty served with a mound of peas cooked with crispy bacon bits. The dessert however was a triumph and worthy of a photo. My wife had homemade doughnut with an insert of whinberry jam - odd taste but she liked it. I had chocolate mousse made with olive oil (really smooth) and adorned with honeycomb and edible flowers. It looked and tasted deeelicious!!

With stylish décor and a very modern menu, this is probably Machynlleth’s trendiest restaurant. We enjoyed all three courses here, including some excellent mackerel, though the highlight was certainly the chocolate mousse with olive oil and edible flowers. The interior is small but we were very happy in our window seat. Service was friendly and food presentation impressive.

We were staying a short distance from Machynlleth and although we found several excellent eateries in the town Number 21 stood head and shoulders above.

We wanted a light lunch at a reasonable price, we got a fab light lunch, great service and fantastically cooked fresh food.

Freshly cooked, lots of local ingredients. Not pretentious, just nicely done. Pretty good for vegetarians and vegans as well.
