Excellent top quality tapas style dinner. Every dish we had was delicious but try the pork cheek. Good quality wine and sherry too. JV

Delicious and inventive tapas, the kind of quality you would expect from a West End establishment at local prices. I will be going again!

Having previously (pre flood) visited and thoroughly enjoyed the tapas I was so disappointed by Number 22 (post flood). We were literally squeezed into horrible seating where the bar jutted out to the extent that it almost touched our collarbones, this is despite asking to be moved (half the restaurant was empty). At the end of a pretty mediocre meal- a heritage tomato salad (over 5 pounds) ended up being one beef tomato and 4 cherry tomatoes, barely salted and hardly oiled, I mentioned to the manager how uncomfortable the seating was. He agreed, admitting to have spotted this issue when he had first arrived at the restaurant, but a run on bookings meant the table was utilised. I was to be reassured that snagging would be complete in January and the bar redesigned. Very poor and cynical customer service.

I have visited this small buzzy tapas restaurant a number of times and the food and service are always excellent. Number 22 is definitely the best restaurant in Herne Hill.

Fuimos 6 para cenar un miercoles. Estaba lleno.

Vale la pena ir a ver si nunca has estado.

Back with a new look and feel, Herne Hill’s Number 22 has the potential to become a well-established local favourite. Large windows, tastefully coloured walls (bold yellow in the back part of the restaurant, acts as a perfect foil to the light blue in the main part), a banquette around the left side and a beautifully tiled bar in the centre create an overall sense of warmth and welcome. This is somewhere one could easily pass any part of the day or indeed even the whole day. Owner Chris Adnitt and...

Our first visit to Herne Hill and I am hooked. Four of us out for a nice meal and were pleasantly surprised! Along with traditional croquettes, they offered some nice options off the beaten path. The baby squid were amazing...deep fried and perfect...the pear and stilton toasties were a pleasant surprise and we fought over the last one! The cod was perfectly cooked and left us wanting more! So, bottom line...order whatever and you won't be let down. The atmosphere is open and airy and had a nice modern flair. The wait staff is wonderful with recommendations and we left feeling satiated and not stuffed. We retired to the bar where we finished with a chocolate martini, espresso martini and traditional martinis and all were made with great care. Great wines too but I can't remember the name of the one we had...long name. Not cheap but worth every pound!

I feel very lucky to have had Number 22 as a local restaurant for a few years now. It never fails to delight with delicious food and a failsafe and well-thought out wine menu. I often go for special occasions with a few friends, especially for the paella.Well worth a visit.

I love this place! It's that simple. We took friends last night and it was a joy to see them revel in their first visit. They couldn't fault one single dish or one glass of wine (and we had a lot of each!). A simply wonderful local restaurant - I can't recommend it enough.

I particularly love this restaurant as the weather gets colder - they have a real fire! It's such a lovely cosy little spot with fantastic food - on last visit highlights were the squid stuffed with black pudding, pork cheek in red wine and, of course, the classic padron peppers. We always try and come around Christmas as a festive treat.

Last week's meal provided yet another a reminder of why we've always loved Number 22. Our previous visit was for a delicious paella on terrace on one of this year's rare sunny Sundays. This time we had a selection of great tapas dishes, washed down with a delicious red. Favorites were the king fish with celeriac, caramelised onion and pine nuts, and the iberico pork cheek in red wine. If anything I think the food was better than I remembered, and the friendly atmosphere and service are spot on for a local restaurant.

I went with for dinner with a friend recently and we were both very impressed with the menu. The roast partridge was cooked to perfection - still deliciously moist and worked well with the sharpness of the sauce. The pork loin was amazing - which you expect with Iberico but again it was cooked well (slightly pink) so was melt in the mouth. The surprise hit of the evening for me though was the Squid, potato and jamon Serrano stew - really warming and packed with flavour, it worked so well as a dish.I thought the service was spot on - not too fussy but attentive and our waiter was extremely knowledgeable about the food with extra details and info on any dishes we asked about. Will definitely be going back again soon!

We popped into Number 22 by chance and I am very glad we did. The Thursday evening was quite busy, but the waiters were both efficient and knowledgable. This is NOT your bog standard local Tapas Bar. Roast Partridge with Escabeche sauce? Wow,Mojama (Air dried salt Tuna) & Caper berries, and Iberico Pork Loin were highlights. There are plenty of other classics, all with interesting twists. Love it.

But has slipped lately. Decor has become shabby and menu Has become expensive. And even for tapas some portions are tiny e.g. 1 pork rib for seven quid. Dinner for two cost me over £130 recently for a largely unspectacular meal (admittedly with 2 x bottles of wine) Shame because used to be really good and interesting restaurant. It all feels a bit tired now. It does still have a great wine list and the service is good. The menu needs a revamp and the prices need to be more sensible then it could quickly be great local restaurant again. I'll give it one more chance. Here's hoping.

We've been going to number 22 regularly since it opened, spent quite a few quid here over the years, and usually had an excellent meal and drinks. Sadly, our most recent experience was a real disappointment. The food was ok, nothing special, and the prices are now ridiculously high. What was really unacceptable was the compulsory service charge - when the waitress brought the card machine over to the table, she had already entered the amount to pay, including a 12.5% service charge which we were not told in advance was mandatory. My partner objected and was 'allowed' to pay a bit less.Note to Chris (owner) : If a service charge is automatically added the restaurant must, by law, warn you of this before you eat. The charge must be clearly displayed on any price list or priced menu inside or outside the restaurant. The entire place could do with a bit of a freshen up, especially the courtyard - pots of weeds and half-dead plants are not a good look, and the tables need a good scrub. Recently the light in the ladies loo was not functioning and for weeks afterwards a single nightlight was the only available light at the sinks. Sad, as we really liked this restaurant but we're unlikely to return and would not recommend it.

We were 4 hungry ladies last night, and made our way through olives, and toasted broadbeans (delicious), mussels x 2 (we didn't read carefully and found ham in them), a white fish (this came with black pudding which was a suprise), aubergine fritters, duck, patatas and chips. All was beautifully cooked and presented; but we wished we'd been warned about the meat content of the fish dishes. Service was good. We will be going again for sure.

We had a lovely Saturday night in here last month and I would have given an overall rating of "very good" if only the portion sizes were bigger! They were too small for the prices being charged - especially the quails (we had about 2 mouthfuls of meat each, if that!). That said, the food was very tasty and the service was spot on. It's just a shame we had to eat some crisps when we got home to fill us up!We will definitely go here again to try the paella on a Sunday or to have a couple of beers and some pintxos (or croquetas - they are delicious), but probably not for tapas.

We live locally so have visited this place over a number of years. It has really good service and good value wine. The tapas are delicious and good quality but don't change very often and can sometimes run out which narrows choice. Recently is only opens from mid week to Sunday which is a shame. Really good Sunday paella offer. It has a large extension at the back which is lovely for summer dining.

Number 22 is leagues apart from most local restaurants. The food, décor and service all smack of a restaurant competing with the best in the heart of London. Which makes Herne Hill very lucky indeed! I was there on Sunday and spent a really enjoyable couple of hours working my way through the menu of pintxos, cold and hot platters. The portions are more generous than the likes of Morito or some of the newer tapas joints, and I personally think the food is of a much higher quality than that found there or the much-lauded Lola Rojo. The quail, pork belly and salt cod were my favourite dishes on this particular trip, washed down with a superior bottle of rioja from the great wine selection. I'll definitely keep going back here!

Number 22 is a fantastic restaurant to have on your doorstep. The selection of tapas is constantly changing, but the seared tuna and lamp cutlets we had on our most recent visit were both real winners. Service is knowledgeable and pleasant, and the room is a lovely setting to settle into. The highlight for me is the sherry/wine list. Some real gems on there at a very reasonable price. I look forward to going back (again!) as the weather improves to enjoy the patio.

Maybe I am biased because this restaurant is at the bottom of my road BUT! the tapas and wine are of the highest quality. Gets quite crowded so do book in advance, food is nice but it's pretty expensive.Bottle beer is about £4.5, cocktail is £7.50 - we had 2 drinks each.Tapas portion but with main course prices! We had bread, black pudding, padron peppers, cold meats, seared tuna, scallops (just 2 for £8.50), potatoes, chorizo, 2 desserts (£6 each!!!! So not worth it!).. all including service adds up to £96.50 and we're still slightly hungry. Not going back anytime soon.

Number 22 is simply the coolest Spanish-themed restaurant in South London.Unlike many others, it stays away from the clichéd image of Spanish restaurants everywhere; the decor here is tasteful and understated: polished dark wood, flattering lighting, an open fire (in winter), local artwork on the walls. Not a single bull / matador / flamenco dancer / terracota tile / bunch of garlics in sight!. The atmosphere in the relatively small dining space is relaxed an intimate; no Gipsy Kings blaring out through the speakers. The staff are young, attentive, polite, helpful and always make you feel welcome. Due to its popularity, booking in advance is advisable, especially if wanting to go on a Saturday. The menu is very much based on the ubiquitous tapas, but with a difference. We are not talking greasy platefuls of deep fried squid rings and re-heated paella here, but a well chosen assortment of simple yet delicately prepared dishes designed to seduce a more discerning clientele. The meal on my last visit included padrón pepers (an absolute must and never as viciously hot as they can be in Spain), crispy paprika squid, baby potatoes with "mojos" (dips) and a plate of surprisingly good rabbit fillets with "sobrasada" (a type of spread made of cured pork, salt, paprika and other spices). The dishes arrived separately and just at the right time, perhaps to allow for the small size of the table.Wine seems to be Number 22's weakest point; the selection is not terribly exciting, with most decent wines on the high end of the price list (above £20 for whites and £25 for reds). While on previous occasions I have ordered a bottle of albariño (a crisp and delicious white wine produced in the North of Spain - the wine list has two and I always order the cheapest of the two, which is very nice), this time I just fancied a glass of red, which was a mistake, as the wine I got was quite underwhelming and the only poor note on an otherwise excellent meal. Having said this, the restaurant has been organising wine tastings and other wine-related events for a few months now, so here is to hoping. All in all, Number 22 offers excellent value for money and it is definitely worth the journey, especially if you live in South London. A meal for two, with a bottle of wine and service, is usually around £50-£60.

Table service is extremely slow. The man waiter (to describe him accurately, he is the man who is on the heavier side of the weighing scale, with a beard and wears glasses) is rude. The said waiter initially said food will be served in 30 minutes. At the 45 minute mark, food was still not there. When i told him that I will only be paying for coffee because I had to leave, he literally said “I told you so that it will take 30 minutes.” I told him that its been 45 minutes since I ordered and he just said “Well, thats how it is.” Food is actually good. Very bad customer service. If you are happy to wait for about an hour for your food, by all means.
