Northern Soul Grilled Cheese in Manchester

The BEST Mac n Cheese in MANCHESTER!! Never fails to hit the spot, very friendly staff and a warm welcome greeted us. Ordered an ice cold strawberry milkshake, my wife had lemonchello spritz, we had trickles to start 😋 followed by New Yorker and house fries 👍😋💯 all very nice and 💯 recommend a visit by everyone.

We were recommended to go to this restaurant after a free tour. Food was good, so was the place’s vibe. The problem was that when we were given the bill, they said we had to pay an extra 10% for being 6 people. Even though we complained about it, they said it was the restaurant’s policy and that was how things worked there. We checked the menu to see if they wrote about it somewhere to aware the clients, nothing about groups was written there. We said the manager if they could, at least, say it in the menu for next clients to be aware about this mandatory 10% extra. They said the next version of the menu would say so. I doubt it. Moreover, the manager told us that we should be happy about this 10% cuz in many other places they would charge 12% only for being 4 people. This mandatory extra tip never happened to me in two years living in Manchester. There is no doubt that waiters work super hard. But this is not the way to make clients pay tips. And a group of 6 people, in my opinion, is better for the restaurant than being just 2. Hope with this review you think about changing this 10%

Here comes the third one. We had good food, not great, but good. Exactly what we expected. But at the end, we were charged an extra 10% unexpectedly. Apparently, because we were a group of six. We weren’t informed about this in advance, it was only mentioned when the bill arrived. We didn’t think that was fair. We paid it anyway, but we should’ve been told beforehand. That way, we would’ve had the choice to stay or go somewhere else. And sure, it was “just” 10% this time—but why not 20%? Or 80%? If we’re only told at the end, and expected to pay no matter what, that’s not right. To be clear, this is absolutely not the employees’ fault. On the contrary, they treated us exceptionally well. But the employer has a responsibility to be transparent. If you’re worried about what a bad review can do to your place, here’s a simple solution: don’t surprise people with hidden charges. Where we come from, tips are earned through great service, not forced. Just treat your employees fairly and pay them what they deserve.

The food was good, even though it took a while to serve us, but the worst part was this: when it was time to pay, they forced us to pay 10% more for being more than 5 people. They excused themselves by saying that since it was a large group, the staff should provide better service and it means overpaying for attention, making it more difficult to serve. They say the tips go entirely to the staff (this last point is something I think is great), but if you want your staff to earn more, pay them more and don't exploit them. Tips are given when you think the service is exceptional or better than expected; it's not mandatory. Besides, this is something that only happened to us at this restaurant, even though they said they would charge us an even higher percentage than theirs in all restaurants. In the end, it was a shame, since while we ate well, it made us feel a bit ripped off. I hope this helps and doesn't happen to other people.

Really good food but upon paying they informed us they just came up with a 10% surcharge for parties larger than 5 people. That should've been told to us before, at the beginning, BEFORE ordering food, not at the end when taking the bill.

Absolutely great stuff! It has its own soul, the food is fresh, delicious..our first visit to Manchester and we immediately hit on a great establishment. Thank you, we will come again!

Our first visit and apparently a new menu, but regardless, the food was great. We have fussy eaters in our house and they were very happy with their food. The service was great, friendly and helpful from all the staff.

Don't really understand how a place that mainly serves sandwiches sells out of sandwiches two hours before they close 🤔🤔🤔 and then only tells people that when they've sat down 🤔🤔🤔

I came here last year and was reminded to leave a review when i tried to go here on easter sunday but was closed - i had the mac cheese toastie and a milkshake - the meal was incredibly tasty - they items were also decent sized so although i had to scavinge off my girlfriends plate for more - this was a good portion. as of last year the prices were not overly expensive for such nice food so i was not complaining on that aspect ( not saying its dirt cheap) will come back in future.

I went to eat the famous kashar toast and was very pleased. The lady in charge, whose name I cannot remember right now, took very good care of me. He recommended the package which included toast, drink and fries. I paid £10. It is recommended.

It was my first time visiting as it was recommend to me by a colleague. It did not disappoint in any way. I seen to straight away but Lizzie who got me a nice seat by the bar. Elliot explained to me the menu very clearly and he was very patient with me even though it was practically completely full. Within 5 minutes he came back over to take my order which was also a very easy and smooth process. The food came earlier than expected as I could see it was busy. I ordered a Chorizo Grilled cheese Sandwich with a side of Mac & Cheese. My plates were cleared very promptly after I had finished. All in all it was a brilliant experience. Shout out once again to Lizzie, Maisie, Elliot and everyone working there that day.

Las papas fritas tenían algún tipo de recubrimiento / sabor en ellas que todavía estoy soñando! El rancho de ajo era *chefs beso* también tengo la limonada de fresa que es una necesidad absoluta! Super refrescante! El servicio fue increíble - tuvimos Maisie que nos sirvió con una sonrisa! Estaban muy ocupados .. chefs trabajando muy duro y todo el personal asegurándose de que todos estaban contentos. Waited 1 hour for food, and even then it didn't all come at once.

I try to come here every time I'm in Manchester, what a spot! The soundtrack, flawless. The friendly service, flawless, the flavour creations the come up with, flawless. Always service with a smile and a good chat! Come here for unbridled vibes and a happy stomach! I will always fly the flag for this place!

Good food nice the grilled cheese sandwiches delicious the fried potatoes crunchy and the ambiance cool and trendy. We arrived quite late to lunch and no problem. Quick service they lacked nothing from the menu. 10 out of 10 experience we will repeat in our next trip to Manchester

Used to tell everyone that if you're in Manchester you have to go here but our most recent visit left us doubting that. It seems as though they've changed their recipe because it's not nearly as greasy as it used to be, I mean you ain't going to cheese grill place for a healthy meal. They've got rid of their draft taps so it's only overpriced bottled beer left, they've stopped doing milkshakes too take away, and they mixed up our dishes and ended up giving my vegetarian mother in law a sandwich with bacon in it. Couldn't be more over it now.

Always love going here for informal fud when in the northern quarter. Great sandwiches and service in a relaxed atmosphere. Shame the draft IPA wasn't on but other than that all perfect for what we wanted.

Brilliant food, served quickly and with lovely service. We ordered a lot and the portions were VERY generous so we left in a glorious sleepy, cheesy haze. Delicious all round, no notes - just great comfort food.

I love going to Northern Soul for comfy, cozy grilled cheese with friends. The servers are very friendly, even when it's busy they're attentive. All the food is great, one grilled cheese is definitely filling enough, last time I shared bits just to try more. The tater tots are amazing also 🤩 Music can sometimes be a bit loud for my liking, but it's vibey music so it's ok :)

*VISITED JAN 25* My friend and I came for the Tenner Deal (The Soul sandwich, fries and a drink for £10) but I also treated myself to some absolutely superb, lip-smacking mozzarella sticks. I NEED to have them again. Service was friendly. I was so excited to come here on a homemade food tour, and it did not disappoint. * Sticking to a classic, a friend and I shared The Soul, with no fillings (though you can have up to 3 for free). The cheese…phwoar. Just beautiful. There are all sorts of snacks and sides to get involved with also, but it’s just got to be The Soul. You can either sit in, or there’s another door for food to take away.

Incredible atmosphere with great attention to detail. Our server Lissie was professional, attentive and bubbly and made our 1st experience unforgettable. Popped in for lunch on a cold Wednesday and was welcomed into a warm, busy restaurant with a great vibe (and music!). The food was incredible, Mac & Cheese very flavorful and the sandwiches expertly made, service was quick too. Despite the menu mainly being grilled or fried, the food wasn't too heavy and I was left feeling satisfied rather than overfull. Just goes to show how high the quality of the ingredients they use are! Would highly recommend for a quick bite or a sit down meal to avoid the crowds of Manchester.

Excellent spot to grab a Cheese toasties. This really is the ultimate of cheese toasties. Staff were so helpful and friendly. Great vibe with fabulous soul music. I had the 3 cheese toasties and my daughter opted for the mac n cheese toasties. We also had mac n cheese fries and mozzarella stick on the side. Everything was the ultimate in comfort food.

We have been coming for years after accidentally stumbling across it, always been given a reason to come back, quick and easy and staff are always very accommodating. 5 stars doesn’t do it justice.

We entered as first timers, scared and confused. Dan guided us, like a shaman through a Grilled Cheese ceremony that we will never forget. The service was perfect, the food was amazing and the music - slapped. We will be back.

Great welcome and a nice interior, feels a bit like you're stepping into a New Orleans diner, great music to vibe to. We ordered the Soul with extra jalapeños and tabasco sauce, The Combine with mac 'n' cheese, a mozzarella stick and 3 chicken tenders with Baby Ray's BBQ sauce. Mouth watering and soul pleasing. The mozzarella stick is a stealer along with the perfect Ray's BBQ sauce. I'd say if you're totally famished, the Combine is your go for, my friend practically inhaled hers. While the Soul is an all taste buds pleasing choice if you don't like massive portions.

Don't be fooled this is a food venue not a dance venu. I turned up and asked where the dance floor was. As all could only see tables .No we don't have a dance floor.i said but its Northern soul. She called for someone I think she wanted to throw me out straight away I left sadly disappointed. I get you would want to listen to Northern eating a meal but don't get angry if someone turns up wanting to dance to Northern. I won't be eating there because of the attitude I received..this was over 6 months ago so please don't blame the percent staff . Still not eating there even if the the food is great .I think you should educate your staff. And I will try and be a bit more understanding and polite.

Great food, good prices and good service. Had the Barbecue Ray Grilled Cheese and it was really good, lovely melty cheese and lots of BBQ sauce. Would recommend the Tator Tots as a side too, they’re lovely! Staff were attentive and really helpful. Would recommend as good place to swing past for a bite to eat. Milkshakes looked great, but didn’t have a chance to try.

Absolutely delicious! Good selection of dishes. They were busy and we were asked to wait, but this wasn't more than a few minutes. Staff very efficient. The wait was well worth it! Great atmosphere, friendly staff and a satisfying meal! Highly recommend!

Been visiting ever since this was a pop up with queues round the block on Church St, and it never fails to deliver. Food is always high quality with a regularly rotating menu, today’s visit being the Christmas menu so I went for the Brie Wish You a Merry Christmas which was outstanding and as cheesy as you’d expect!

Came here over the weekend for some hearty food after raving at WHP and it didn’t disappoint! The service was excellent - all the staff were really welcoming and friendly. The chorizo ho-ho sandwich which I ordered was superb and definitely left me feeling satisfied! Would definitely come here again!

I’ve nipped into here a few times over the years. I was served by a lovely gent called Dan. The service was second to none. Such a chill relaxed atmosphere and all the staff are fab. I cannot recommend this place enough. Over the years the sandwich’s have changed but staff have always been friendly and inviting. If you a chance over the Xmas period try the chance try there chrimbo sandwich, mini roast on a toastie! DELISH!

Parada para almorzar aquí durante el fin de semana, el lugar estaba lleno, así que nos sentamos fuera, que era grande que no nos importó, el personal era amable y el servicio era rápido. Tenemos dos tostadas y dos lados con dos cocas, terminó siendo £ 44 (€ 53 ! ! ! ! ) que era una locura para dos bocadillos! La comida era hermosa, pero no justificaría los precios para lo que tenemos!
