A great addition to the Chillingham Road - very good variety of food, and good coffee. Well worth a visit for fresh and unusual food, a change from the usual, and you can tell the quality by the number of people waiting outside for their orders!

The owner and chef, Richard, has carefully curated the menu based on his past experiences in serving at different countries. Don't be deceived by the seemingly miniscule menu; these exact choice dishes have 'dished' a near perfect string of 5-star reviews in Google Reviews, and fourteen thousand Instagram followers. 🥙Tofu Katsu Bao Bun (Curried Mayo & Pickled White Cabbage) - The fluffiness of the 'Bao', the crisp of the Fried Tofu, the crunch of the White Cabbage; it's evident that the combination of textures and flavours were masterfully curated. The taste is incredible. Even the presentation of the dish is just beautiful - minimalistic and classy at the same time. 🍪Warm Miso Cookie - House Made Malt Ice Cream & Salted Caramel - I heard the rumblings of a machine as the dessert was being prepared. It turned out to be an Ice-Cream machine! Richard prepares the ice-cream FRESH. It's the ideal dessert. Try to imagine the culmination of different senses involved in a single mouthful of this - the warmth of the Miso Cookie with the cold freshly-made ice-cream, the sweetness intermingling with the salty caramel layer atop the cookie.. Only 2 dishes from the menu and I was already blown away. Mind you, should you attempt to come, it is safer to make a reservation. The cozy bar only fits a handful of people, and it often is fully booked.

My second time here - first in lockdown. I was once again - blown away. It's just simply delicious. I ordered a couple of different dishes - very tasty.

I ordered 2x the beef burger sliders. They were very reasonably priced at £12 in total. The quality was superb. Some of, if not the best burgers I’ve had in Newcastle. Will definitely be ordering again!

Ordered a beef slider with a portion of chips. The preparation was quick and super tasty. The people are extremely friendly. We are really happy with our order and will definitely be back. Highly recommend it !

Just had the Katsura curry & sticky rice takeaway tonight and absolutely delicious! The different levels of spice and taste was fantastic and can't wait to try the other menu items once this lockdown is over, don't miss the opportunity to taste the best at value for money rates, fantastic!

A little hard to find among the other brightly lit places on the same street but definitely worth the effort! It's a little pricey, but the quality is great!

We went here for a quick lunch bite and didn’t expect it to be so small. The restaurant/bar is all bar stools I’d say in total could sit 12 people, so I’d say we were lucky to get a seat! I will definitely be reserving a table the next time. The food was lovely albeit small portions but non the less left feeling comfortably full. Highly recommend.

Sought out this place after reading the Secret Diner review and we were not disappointed - what an amazing place! Tiny restaurant, reminiscent of the Izakaya style in Japan, it has limited bar seating but bookings can be made in advance as the seats next to us were reserved. The bao were exceptional - between the four of us we ordered 7 bao and 3 small plates which was more than enough. Literally would be hard pushed not to order the same choices again next time as they were so good - my Dad particularly loved the haggis bao though my Mum says its all about the duck spring rolls! I'm not sure you can pick a wrong choice as all of it was fantastic. The staff were great too - very welcoming and helpful in explaining the details to my parents and in recommending items for us too. Will most definitely be back for more, and soon!

Really impressive meal for Valentines with my boyfriend. They had a set menu and were kind enough to make some adjustments to cater to our dietary requirements (pescatarian). Ten delicious, imaginative courses made fresh and presented beautifully. Nice interior with a chilled, intimate vibe and modern decor. Staff friendly and far cooler than we’ll ever be. Definitely recommend if you’re after something a bit different to your usual meal out. Thanks Bao Bar!

What a fantastic place. The food is exceptional, house wine was delicious, atmosphere was great and the chef / owners were so friendly. We went on a Saturday night and would recommend booking as the venue only holds 10/12 people. Expect to be sitting in bar style seating but they are comfy high chairs. There were just 9 choices on the menu but gosh wee they amazing. 4 bao buns (1 chicken, 1 veggie, 1 prawn and one unusual) the 5 small plates. All very reasonably priced for the quality. We had 4 bao buns and 2 small plates to share with a pint of Asihi beer and a house white wine = £41. Would happily visit again. But definitely book! Well done, a great small business.

We were working away from home and stumbled across this place, we hadn’t booked and we were lucky to get a seat. The food was so good we booked for the next night, we ended up eating there three night on the bounce. I love my kids and can’t wait to see them but I was hoping our job would drag on so I could eat there the fourth.

Great value, incredible quality and delicious ingredients!! The staff were fantastic and even gave us free desert as it was the end of the week!! Such a special gem in Newcastle. We are lucky to have them. They definitely deserve every success.

Really good - the chicken dumplings in Asian broth were one of the best things I have eaten in a loooooong time - even the kid enjoyed it!

Reservamos de antemano ya que éramos una fiesta de cinco, sin embargo, es bastante pequeño, así que buen trabajo fuimos a las 12 del mediodía. Cumpleaños tardío almuerzo ligeramente borracho con hija. Pequeño lugar, un tercio de los cuales es la cocina. Comida deliciosa: todo lo que comimos estaba perfectamente preparado y delicioso.La tentación es sobreordenar ya que las porciones parecen pequeñas, pero la única razón para hacerlo es porque quieres probar todo.

By far our favourite place to eat in Newcastle, nothing comes close to the food or atmosphere. The Bao is the best we've had!!!!

Fantastic little spot tucked away but well worth finding. Food was delicious - tapas style asian dishes. All food prepared right in front of you and nice atmosphere.Highlight for me was the prawn Bao bun and chicken katsu curry but couldn't fault any of it. Will definitely return

Made an unplanned visit for the first time last night. The space is quite small, with a good sense of style and atmosphere but still a little deceiving as despite all this, we were not prepared for the food that followed which was absolutely outstanding.We had a selection of the buns and small plates - around 50% of the menu - and each dish was stunning in both presentation and taste.Currently one of the best kept secrets in Newcastle - I would be absolutely shocked if this business isn’t expanding in the next 12 months - whether you live in Newcastle or just visiting, this place is a must!

I visited tonight for the first time and the food was unbelievable I can’t remember the last time I had food that tasty!!! Would absolutely recommend, I will definitely be going back..... perhaps tomrrow!

Great spot for a bite to eat in Heaton. The restaurant has an intimate ambience and lends itself to an informal dining experience. Seating is around bar style counter with half the room directly overlooking the open kitchen. The menu offers a selection of small “Asian-tapas” style dishes ranging from a selection of Bao buns to a small but varied choice of specials. We sampled probably just over half of the menu between two of us. All of our choices were very flavoursome and presented to an impressive standard, with the pork bao probably edging it as the highlight. To drink, you can choose from beer, wine, Japanese whiskey, sake and more.The music accompanied our experience well, as did the welcoming service. Prices are definitely reasonable for the quality of food. As mentioned in other reviews, it is cash only but there is a cash point less minute’s walk away.

Cool little sit up bar restaurant with a very small number of seats so it doesn’t lend itself to large groups unfortunately. The food is great & very reasonably priced, another great addition to Heaton’s eating scene. Hope it’s here for the long haul!

Have been here twice now and have been so impressed both times! Everything is absolutely perfect from the food to the atmosphere. The owners are super friendly and the food really is something else. No where else like it in town. Looking forward to many more visits :)

Had a lovely meal here last week. Food was all delicious (especially the chicken dumplings!) and the beers were ice cold! Decor and music also lovely. Will definitely be returning soon.

We had a fantastic meal here for 2 people. We shared about 5 dishes all together and it was quite enough for us. The steamed bao buns are amazing. The dumplings are so tasty. The combination of flavours are delicious. They are the best we have had and we have had them in Shanghai and London. I also tried kombucha which I enjoyed. The bar is very nice but very small. It’s very intimate. It may even be too small for some people as we saw 2 couples leave after being seated. All seats are high stools at a bar either looking into the open kitchen or the back of the restaurant. It’s not really suitable for big groups because of the seating capacity which is approximately 12 ? So you may have to wait to be seated but it is worth the wait. We will definitely go back and take our son when he visits from London to show off a great Newcastle eatery. The staff are very friendly and helpful but the restaurant only takes cash no cards. I wish the staff the best of luck for their new restaurant and hope they open one in Gosforth so we can enjoy a drink and great food nearby.

This little place to eat served me one of the best meals I have had in ages the flavours were so perfectly blended together. I sincerely hope you take time to try this place out. All the very best to the guys there

Quirky little bar serving up delicious freshly prepared asian small plates - nice cold beers and great tunes too.

We had an amazing meal here. A great and original addition to the area. The food was fresh, tasty and beautifully presented. Classic and unique combinations of flavours with a great blend of textures and colours. Best meal we have had in ages! Good drinks selection also and friendly and attentive staff. We will be back! A very small space, nicely decorated and specialising in steam buns. The food was lovely, particularly the salmon. We all had a lovely meal before moving on to somewhere where we could sit around a table and chat.

We had visited friends in the area and popped in on way home. This is a hidden treasure, the food, service, decor was all excellent. We both had a trio of oysters which we enjoyed so much that we had a second order of them. The shrimp roll and bao bun were excellent too. Very reasonable, good quality food, well presented and great service. Highly recommend.

Not exactly spacious but everything is put together with love down to the very detail! Beautifully decorated, and the food is really something! It is a real upgrade for chili road and we've heard they're going to open another Bao Bar somewhere in town at some point! Excellent!

Visited lunch time on a Wednesday. The food was truly delicious and the service was great. As for the venue, it is small and quirky, with a classy yet chilled vibe. I will definitely be returning.

Travelled to come here as we heard a lot of hype about it, we weren’t disappointed, the bao buns are unbelievable, the flavours are paired perfectly! Can’t wait to try it again!!

One of the best meals I've had this year. So, so tasty. 5 star food for normal prices. Got chatting to the owner and they used to work for a Saudi millionaire; that's how good they are.

Nipped in for breakfast and had a lovely time. Full breakfast with Americano. Bacon, black pudding and sausages were delicious. Would have liked to have brown bread with breakfast and this option was made available. Asked for no mushrooms and not offered an additional piece on breakfast. Slightly expensive for the amount of food although did get a small glass of apple juice with it. Next time will just have a Sausage butty as they were delicious! Will be back. Worth a visit.

Had 7 tapas today. Fabulous ingredients very poorly cooked. Prawns were raw and the crab was off. The staff were lovely and waved the bill
