Nicolson’s Bar & Kitchen in Inverclyde

Today my sister would have been 60, so my other sister and I chose your place to eat a meal in her memory and raise a glass to her. My sister Caroline was fierce, exacting and had high standards - you wouldn't cross her! Cancer tried to tell her she had six months, over two years later she was still telling it to 'do one' in her own determined way. She would have approved of your venue, the warmth we received from your staff when walking in was lovely. Caroline would have also liked the staff member who greeted me (like a long lost cousin) on arrival and looked after us all night. The amazing food we had tonight would have been a big hit with my sister, did I mention she LOVED food. After one of her operations I was visiting her in hospital. It had been a long operation and she was clearly still in pain and tired. She had her own room. Out of nowhere she asked me to hand her the cutlery and push the table up the bed. I didn't question it, I just did what I was asked. Suddenly the door opened and in walked a lady with a tray of food. I swear my sister had a sixth sense where food was concerned!!! Lol, I sat (in astonishment) as she polished off a three course meal 🤣🤣 Anyway, back to YOUR gorgeous food, I had the chicken pie and it's the best pie I've ever eaten, hands down! Just the right amount of pastry on top and gallons of tender chicken inside. That sauce , exquisite! The al dente seasonal vegetables - sublime! I'm a fully qualified chef and pastry chef - so your chefs need to take my remarks as a HUGE compliment from someone who really knows food. Would I recommend your establishment - YES Will I return, in a heart beat! What could you do better - nothing at all. The entire experience was a delight from start to finish. My other sister doesn't even stay in Greenock but (as we drove off) she was already checking out train routes in order to bring her husband over for a meal!! Thank you for ending a difficult day on a high. Caroline would have definitely approved 😉 PS the dogs will try the doggy menu too next time

Hi, I dined at 1 Bruce Street recently with my friends. Food was nice, table service was very good, however I overheard the woman owner/manager being very rude and degrading to her staff members. I must say not a very nice way to speak to the hard working employees and for this reason alone you have lost a returning customer.

Firstly, I would like to say that this is no longer referred to as Nicolson's but One Bruce Street. We searched for a dog friendly place to eat lunch and this venue popped up. We visited on 11 August . On arrival, we were met by a very friendly young woman who confirmed that the premises were dog friendly and we could choose to sit in the beer garden or the right hand section of the bar. We chose to sit indoors. Our party consisted of my husband and I and our daughter and husband plus their dog. We were then attended by a very polite, friendly and charming young man. In conversation, we discovered that the couple had taken over the pub in February and had worked hard with family to decorate and refurb to an excellent standard for opening on Feb 14th. The choice of menu was excellent, giving us a choice of the main menu and a lighter brunch menu. My goodness, the quality was excellent and the quantity also. We all chose from the brunch menu and I selected soup and panini , thinking that this would consist of a small portion of soup. How wrong was I ? The soup was home made and delicious and a full portion. All the others were delighted with their choices also. We were just passing through on our homeward journey but if we are ever in the area again, we will without doubt revisit. This couple deserve to be well supported in their new venture and we only hope that they reap the rewards that they deserve. Keep up the good work - they have all it takes to make perfect "mine hosts".

New owner, new look, new menu. Food and service were great. Seats inside and out and dog friendly (inside and out). Owner working a shift and came out with food to the tables. Mac n Cheese, Philly Cheesesteak and Chicken Pie all hit the mark. Nice vibe and would definitely recommend. Will go back.

Went to Nicholsons for lunch there since its been taken over and food was absolutely brilliant Portions were massive and was only £41.50 for two meals, two desserts, two drinks and two cups of tea Recommend the steak pie. 5 stars *

Incredibly disappointed with the food and service. Second visit after a wonderful lunch last time. I had the Philly Steak again which was superb last. My food arrived on a soggy ciabatta with a wee chunk of steak at the end. It was mostly onions that felt like they were put on the roll and allowed to soak through long before serving. Hardly tasted the steak. Chips were great. My daughter had macaroni cheese which was Luke warm, tasteless and served in a cold dish. She ate about 6 pieces and gave up. Fish also was poor with the batter not being crispy. The waitress asked if everything was ok to which I said no not really, then she left. I complained about the Mac cheese and was offered a mighty 80p off. After some considerable time debating the quality of the food it was removed from the bill. Not the only one complaining yesterday either. Very disappointed there was no concern shown over the quality of the food with the comment I’m sorry it’s not up to your standards…..I’m not sure it would be up to anyones standards, I’m sure most people would expect seasoned and some cheese taste to the white sauce…. It’s a shame as I thought it may be a regular haunt for lunch, maybe a one off bad day, or the chef maybe off, but I can’t see me returning.

Good food, not the nicest looking place, but they have a great chef who cares about his trade. Worth the wee walk from town centre.

Have visited several times now for lunch with a group of friends and everyone has throughly enjoyed their meal - great choice on the menu ,warm welcome and friendly service ......and excellent value . The evening menu looks great as well . Highly deserving of the recent gastro pub award .

We ate here twice on a recent visit to Greenock, 28th and 29th May. Meals were very good and a good atmosphere for all ages.

I’m always torn with Nicholson’s. It’s a first class venue. Staff are always really friendly and polite, food is always outstanding and the decor is spot on. Gorgeous beer garden which has been renovated and a car park for designated drivers. The only reason why I’ve given it 3 stars and not 5 is because after a certain time in the evening the clientele age demographics change significantly. Majority of these patrons are lovely and I cannot blame Nicholson’s for being attractive to teenagers as a perfect party spot. I’ve observed police there on a few occasions when the patrons get a little out of hand but to be fair the bouncers are very swift and again polite. These younger patrons income is often disposable and they tend to go out in large groups which can only be a positive thing for Nicholson’s and I’m genuinely happy for them that it looks like they will be able to ride out the pandemic storm and continue trading . If you’re 30+ I would recommend visiting pre 8pm and probably head somewhere after. Maybe I’m just getting old!

We visited on a week night and were the only customers in the restaurant with lots of people in the adjacent bar. The restaurant was very cold on a chilly evening outside and I kept my coat on. We were served by two different staff members, a young man and a young lady. They looked genuinely pleased to see us with lots of smiles and enthusiasm. Our meals were really good both in terms of quality and portions. Both meals and drinks were served extremely quickly. Neither cubicles in the ladies would lock and the door of the cubicle in the gents worked but the lock area was badly damaged. I expect these will be fixed but it created a poor impression. Dogs are allowed in the restaurant and normally I wouldn't eat in a place offering this facility however they do try and seat customer with dogs in one area. I would award at least a rating of 4 if the restaurant was warmer and the toilet doors were restored.

We both had the steak sandwich with 1 being Cajun spiced. The portion was a great size and the food was lovely. Service was quick and staff friendly. 2 other tables in who were served quickly too. Will visit again and recommend it. Restaurant and toilets also clean.

Lovely wee find! Service was impeccable! Food was delicious, massive portions too! Cleanliness throughout to a very high standard, especially the toilets. I highly recommend and will certainly visit again, 5 stars!

Very slow service and staff were not attentive. We waiting ages on our food order being taken (despite only having 4 tables seated in the restaurant). Food came out greasy. No one came to check on food/ask us how we were. Had to approach the bar for our bill, think we would still be sitting there if we waited. Won’t be returning in a hurry.

Waited 40 mins to be served our first drink , when ensuring as to what the hold up was , we’re told by bar manager “ they’ll get there when they get there mate” . Normally enjoy Nicholson’s but not this time and totally unprofessional response to a simple question

Service is pretty shocking, waited nearly half an hour to be served for our first drink and when the waiter arrived he went to another table and sat talking to friends after telling us his card machine ran out

The good lady took keep here for my birthday on 8the January. First time we had visited. Beautifully redesigned inside. Very welcoming atmosphere and the staff were very attentive throughout our visit. Both of our mains and desserts were awesome and we will be back.

What a great night. Great atmosphere with a band who played everything from modern day back to the 80's. They certainly knew how to get a crowd swinging think they were called the Lovelles 👍.

Super atmosphere and lovely staff. Have been several times now and never dissapointed. Food is superb, especially loved the nachos and the fish and chips.Lots of entertainment too but does not distract from the quality of the food service, staff are very attentive.
