Coffee was always a bit ‘hit and miss’, but hit an all time low last Monday. Scalding hot, so picking up the glass it was in, was dangerous. The replacement coffee I asked for, was like flavoured water and still very hot. Yet another coffee shop in Wanstead where it is safer to have the teabag.

This used to be one of my favorite cafes in Wanstead, however this is no longer the case after my visit last week. I spent £8.50 on coffee and cakes and sat at the only table available then took my laptop out. After around 5 mins the owner aggressively approached me waving his hands and says 'This is not a laptop place'. He tells me I need to sit at another table with other people as I'm taking up too much space. I responded that I'd spent nearly £10 not even 5 mins ago and the 4-person table was the only one available and could he please leave me in peace. I said I didn't want to sit with people I didn't know and once I'd spent my money I was free to do as I pleased as long as I wasn't being antisocial. He said he could tell me what to do and where to sit as it is his business and invited me to leave telling me I was barred and not to return. I get that some people sit in cafes for a long while without buying anything but this man was irrational and aggressive. He should at the very least be observing his customers before accosting them and apologise when he is clearly in the wrong. So much for trying to support local businesses.

I had an extremely unpleasant experience here on Friday. This is a real shame as the food is fantastic and on one previous visit I met the owner and he was lovely and very hospitable. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of the manager who was rude to the point of abusive. The reason for this was I purchased a chicken baguette and a coffee costing £10 in total on my card. The first time the waitress serving me told me my card transaction was unsuccessful. I tried again and the same thing happened, which was odd as I knew there were sufficient funds but these things happen so I repeated the transaction one more time and was told it had gone through. I sat down and didn’t think any more of it until I got a notification for three £10 transactions from the cafe on my NatWest app. I went up to the counter and was spoken to in a very patronising way. The manager was unpleasant and seemed reluctant to act as she kept emphasising the transactions were only pending. Eventually she said she had refunded all the transactions- it was very unclear how she did this as she did not ask to see my card at any point. She said I would receive a refund in the next 48 hours. Four days later I can see that I have been refunded, but only for £10, meaning I have paid £20 for one sandwich and coffee. I phoned the cafe this morning to try to rectify the situation. The manager refused to discuss the possibility of a refund, despite the fact I have been charged double and treated consistently in a rude and aggressive manner. I told her I would be leaving an honest Google review of my experience and she claimed repeatedly I was threatening her, before hanging up. This is not about the money (although £20 for a sandwich and coffee is extortionate) but the vile way in which I was spoken to, as if I was in the wrong. I will be chasing this up through my bank as the business has refused to refund me what is owed and I will not be returning- beyond that, I will be advising family, friends and colleagues not to visit either as customer service is just as important as food to a cafe’s success, if not more so. N.B. This review was deleted by the business, who still have not refunded me. I will continue to repost this until they respond appropriately given how they have they have essentially stolen from me and I have been repeatedly mistreated.

Loved the fact that there is a kitchen in the back where goods are I assume baked. I didn't like that a lot of the displayed food was in the open without cover. Not many vegan options, only some kind of biscuit, like shortbread, so did not stay. I cannot fault the staff for this. I just wanted something sweet or savoury with a coffee to spend some time in this otherwise lovely establishment. But as there was nothing I was keen on I went on to the Larder further up the road.

Visit La Bakerie often. The food is always high quality and the refurbished space is more comfortable and relaxing than previously. Staff tend to be friendly and helpful but it is clear that recruitment is problematic at the moment, as it is for a number of places. This does mean service is a little more variable than in the past as new staff get used to their new role. Variety of food, bread and cakes is very good and you definitely get that French 'patisserie' feel about the place - great care is given to the presentation as well as the taste. This is reflected in the prices charged which while relatively expensive probably still reflect reasonable value for money. As someone who has visited this bakery over the years, I do miss some of the previous menu but I hope once staff recruitment issues are resolved, they may return.

I have eaten here quite a few times over my 25 years living in Wanstead, both as La Bakerie and before that, The Nice Croissant. I think it has got better each time. Most recently twice in the past fortnight when I have had an excellent apricot almond cake and Quiche Lorraine, and on Friday some superb scrambled eggs with added back bacon. The eggs were buttery and creamy, perfectly cooked and served on delicious sourdough. The bacon was out of this world. The only let down was the drinks. My dad asked for a large Americano with large hot milk. He was brought a large black coffee, no milk. We reminded the server who I assume must be new? Guy with long pony tail. He was then given a small cold milk, eventually after calling over as we saw it was going to be a small hot milk from where we were sitting, and couldn’t be bothered getting up to the counter yet again, it was correct. I ordered breakfast tea. It came in a small red pot that wasn’t even half full. The cup was minuscule but there wasn’t enough tea to fill it, the water didn’t even cover the tea leaves! The minute amount of milk needs to be increased as again a tiny thimble like jug was nowhere near full. I got some extra hot water but no extra milk arrived and I couldn’t be bothered with it anymore. Overall excellent for food but more training and attention to detail needed on drinks.

We came here to try the choux bun and we were not disappointed, along with Maitre Choux I would rate this as the best in London, the guy is simply put, a genius. The bread is outstanding, the sandwiches are delicious. But when you're waiting 45 mins for things that don't even need to be cooked...just a simple choux and a basic coffee, that's not great. The coffee is the weak point of this place, it's just not up to scratch. Yes, the server can do a decent latte art but when the coffee itself isn't up to scratch thats not enough - not when Wanstead is full of exceptional coffee bean options. The milk- you can tell by listening - is constantly being burnt and the staff are not skilled to the point they can blindly prepare a coffee without measuring the dose. I have seen an espresso poured in less than 14 seconds for someone here which shows the dose and tamp is incorrect.Fix this issue and the place is a winner, as it is, don't come for the coffee come for his baked goods which he makes himself. It's worthit.

The food is good - nothing to rave about in creativity- but good quality ingredients, the cakes are VERY yummy indeed...and look really inviting.Coffee is just above the level of a Costa, this is NOT a place for serious coffee lovers. Real coffee hasn't come to Wanstead yet, I'm still waiting. But what they serve is fine and they have a good selection to choose from, cheaper and better than Costa in my view, which is great! If only there were a little more attention to customer service...I would rate this little cafe higher, but this is my third visit since it changed hands and it's the attention to detail that count for full marks. Mostly locals come in, so I suggest as a business you get to know them...smile...be happy, remember we are spending the money, there is a lot of choice out on the High St. try asking if there is anything your customers need when serving food to the tables, acknowledge the customer's needs, offer advice when taking orders, can the menu be changed for different dietary needs/likes/dislikes etc. I like this place, I just want it to be better - I want it to be great!Lastly I've been served food there three times and no napkins - odd?

Been having coffee, snacks and meals here for 17 years. Disappointed to read today notice of plans to charge minimum of £5.50/person from April 1st, between 11.30 and 4.30 pm at weekends. Often pop in mid afternoon at weekends for coffee and more often than not share a cake between two. Guess we will go elsewhere!

So fortunate to have such high quality taste of France on the doorstep. The owner has pedigree as a patisserie chef in some of the top London hotels and it shows in his produce. He has plans to upgrade the shop front and interior but these things cost money and I cant blame him for approaching this one step at a time. If you want mass produced refrigerated products and tasteless coffee served up with multi million pound marketing budgets then Costa and Starbucks are nearby. If you want truly mouth watering food and outstanding coffee in a warm, hospitable environment Nice Croissant should always the your place to go.

First impressions are good, but go down the back of this dated little eatery and you see it is in need of some money being spent on the decoration. Wall and ceiling are very stained and your eyes are drawn to this while you eat.I also asked for tea with soya milk, didn't get it. Not very impressed.

I was a regular for coffee and cake for over 15 years and always loved it, sadly now, the love affair is over. Have been in a few times since the new management took over and have experienced varying degrees of disappointment. They have prawns on the menu in a salad but would not make me a prawn sandwich?? I went in on a Saturday at about 3.30 and was told that the kitchen was closed? Forget it, there are so many places in Wanstead for drinks and snacks, why would I bother?

This place is simply awful, been there three times in a month, same tramp outside with his worldly possessions in two suitcases sitting outside eating his breakfast out of a small box as you enter (maybe he is the owner?). The shop needs money spent on it, holes in dirty ceilings, filthy and worn floor, dirty walls, rickety old tables, toilets so bad, beyond belief, yet the prices dearer than the spotless Costa up the road. Saturday gave it one more try. I had a Croque M and a cup coffee and a cake , all mediocre, cost me over a tenner! Had to balance on a broken chair, served by the most miserable Chinese girl with a serious attitude problem. Every time I've been there they have place the same old record over and over again. Very unwelcoming to say the least. I am sticking to costa from now, having tried to give this independent a try.

I brunched at Nice Croissant on a Saturday with a friend and liked the place (no fuzz). The staff is very friendly, the place is little yet cosy and the food is ok: I really enjoyed my butternut squash and goat cheese tart but my friend was disappointed with her scrambled eggs (which rather looked like an omelette).I wouldn't call it an authentic French patisserie though...

Excellent service, scrumptious pastries and perfect coffee. A must visit cafe! The owner and chef is a great man. Always very friendly and helpful. Explains all the ingredients of each pastry and is very welcoming. Staff are very attentive. All the pastries are fresh and there are lots of varieties. If you wish to get the taste of France and French pastries - this is certainly a place to visit. :) :) :)

This is a regular coffee stop for me so very disappointed that recent visits show this looks like another Wanstead haunt that's being taken over by the Yummy Mummy set. I'd like to enjoy coffee with friends without the incessant noise of children and parents who seem to park up and then let them run wild. The addition of a sofa area is not a good move in my view. Too 'Costa' and just not necessary. Bring the tables back! This might deter pushchairs in every spare corner. The coffee is good though and the cakes and bread worth a visit. The toilet area could do with a make over.

Has the best croissants in London. So fresh and crispy This place is fantastic whenever I'm this side of london and awake early. It's great for breakfast or a afternoon coffee. They do great coffee and excellent pastry. It's all fresh every morning the pastry chefs are French and superb at what they do.For almond croissants tho you have to be early by 2pm the days batch has normally finished. Staff are nice. And the place.

Have been here several times with my daughter and young grandson. Please don't be put off by the decor - Fabien produces real, genuine French patisserie and the baguettes have the true taste and texture and are not just baked off supermarket ones. The staff are friendly. The range of cakes available improves each week. Try the new cinnamon bun - yummy. Child friendly and some good toys.mmlovely spot tobaitvoutsidexwhen the weather permits

For the almond croissants, nice is an understatement. They are so crisp and tasty, other pastries and bread are also good. Excellent coffee and pleasant staff make it the cafe to pass the time in Wanstead High Street. Will try lunch there soon but, please, smarten up the decor and especially the toilet.

What's more, the staff are all lovely, charming, delightful people and make it a treat to go in there on a regular basis. If you're anywhere near this part of London, you really do have to go, because you honestly will not regret it!!

Although the staff are friendly they truly are quite incompetent. It takes forever to have food delivered to the table and the coffee isn't particularly worth waiting for. It's also rather cramped and if the food was worth coming for that wouldn't be a problem, but overall the place is a disappointment.I think the owner's presence behind the counter would be more effective, and would certainly enable customers to give him immediate feedback. We had the worst croque monsieur ever yesterday, microwaved and yet still cold and inedible. The cakes look lovely but are really nothing special. The only thing I go in for generally is the almond croissants and even these aren't quite the same anymore, as they allo look like a ile of boxes have been left on top of them.

This could be a great place but sadly isn't. On the upside the new owner is much nicer than the previous miserabilist regime. On the downside quality has not improved. Shame! This is a great location but I would always walk up to the other end of the high street and visit Larder in preference.

Great stop on the high street for amazing French pastries on the way to work, or stop for lunch with some delicious soups and a beautiful slice of quiche. The interior might be lacking some of the frills and charm that you would want from a French Patisserie, but the food on offer more than makes up for it.

Saw the cafe, read the reviews and didn't have high hopes however outdoor seating was attractive and made me think of European cafés so thought I'd chance a coffee. Prices were reasonable so also ordered a salmon and prawn salad. Coffee arrived promptly and was good, salad was freshly prepared and a generous size. Prawns were frozen but plenty of salmon and dish was unexpectedly served with two fresh bread rolls which was a bonus. The salad came dressed and seasoned so if you're particular about dressing and seasoning your own food, might be as well to say when ordering. Interior was bright, spacious and fresh and not too noisy inside despite full tables. Though service was efficient, a smile or greeting would have been appreciated when taking my order though when food was delivered, received pleasing personal service. The cakes, eclairs and biscuits in the display looked very tempting but didn't indulge so can't comment on taste but they displayed well.Less than a minutes walk from the main parade of shops, enjoys a deep pavement so further from the road if you're sitting outside and fewer shoppers bustling past. I'd visit again.
