Went here having stopped in the area. Firstly the place was tiny and no room at all which made it feel like you was sat with other people. Service was quite shocking we had popadoms before we even had a drink. We had to actually ask them if we could have a drink. The food was ok nothing special. The naan bread and chapati were terrible, they were tiny, ridiculous price and looked like they were straight out of a packet. Wouldn’t go again

Like other recent reviewers, I would emphasize that the restaurant is downstairs and in a tiny room. No mixed drinks, just beer and wine. I did not find it dingy and the waiter was attentive, not rude at all. Instead, the food was very good and -- considering it's in Mayfair and close to a lot of expensive places -- quite reasonably priced.

I've read all the bad reviews. Yes, the service is a bit surly and curt. They are not going to win any points for graciousness. But they're not the nasty creatures the reviews make them out to be. They just want you in and out. And, frankly, you probably want the same. The place is tiny (about 7 tables). It's also not the dingy den some folks are making it out to be. It's fine. Manager/staff in charge was rude and incredibly unhelpful; one of the worst-mannered I've come across. Very small/cramped space that seats less than 20. Despite stating on their website that they are accommodating of food allergies, please note that this is not true, as everything is pre-made and heated up in the kitchen. The food was quite good taste-wise, but not made fresh. Upside of this is that it arrives very quickly. Very reasonably-priced meal - came to £10 a person for 4 people at lunchtime, which is fantastic, particularly for its location. However, I was not impressed with the experience or quality of food, so would not go back again.

I have visited this quaint little restaurant many times and myself and a friend always thought it was excellent, and it still is! however for a curry meal with a few sides starter, poppadum's and beers is it worth £35 per head? I don't think so, so with a heavy heart I can only rate this a 3/5. Yes its in Mayfair near shepherds market however when the prices are that much higher even for central London then there comes a point. Not sure I will return for some time now due to this but otherwise I think its a bit unfortunate.

Having discovered the famous shepard market, we had a look around the hidden village everyone's been hyping about, and stumbled across this small jewl, tucked away in the corner like something In an aladins movie. On arrival we were greeted with warm welcomes, but had to wait for a table as it was obviously a very busy time. Eventually got a table, had drinks starters and mains.... Could not fault this place the slightest, food was VERY flavourful with just the correct portion sizes which were enough to finish. Cheap prices compared to neighbouring restaurants in the varcinity but all in all a wonderful dining experience. Would deffinatly go back there again next time we are in the area, making sure to reserving a table before hand. A+ all round. Thank you and well done!

I was hesitant to try this restaurant as I saw some mixed reviews, but I and 6 of my little party, were more than impressed by the standard of service and quality of food provided in this little Indian. I couldn't find fault in anything and I can't say how much I appreciate the level of personal attention found in a small Indian-themed restaurant in a busy capital. I ordered a Lamb Dansak at the recommendation of the waiter and I'm very glad I did. The curry was flavoursome and cooked to perfection and not spoiled by any overpowering spices, oil or sauce. The staff were more than happy to cater for two vegetarian and non-alcoholic drinker and eater in our party, offering them delicious alternative dishes. I'd recommend New Taj Mahal to any fan (or not) of Indian cuisine - Vegetarian or not. Brilliant, hidden little restaurant.

I am at least 10 countries and six months behind on my reviews but I liked this place so much that I decided to do it first. What makes a good restaurant? The ambiance? The location? The quality of the fittings? To an extent, yes. But what really makes a good restaurant is the quality of the food and the staff. The New Taj Mahal requires you to go down a flight of mirror lined stairs - they only have seven tables but the staff are excellent and the food good. If you want an Indian meal in this area, come to this place. I can see from the other reviews that not everyone has had the same experience and so it may depend on who is in at the time - I struck lucky.

First of all, Kiefer Sutherland who happens to be one of my favourite actors ( see him in the amazing Designated Survivor !) should not be reviewing Indian restaurants. I read the reviews in TA, both positive and negative and was hoping for a good meal. This is a tiny restaurant, but well mantained and very clean. Seems to be a family run affair and despite some negative reviews, service was fine.Food though was average at best, the bhaji was oily. the Tikka Masala was prettytasteless. Rice I'm afraid was microwaved (hope I'm wrong here and would be nice if the restaurant manager would confirm that the rice is freshly made) breads ordered were slightly sweet and I'm not sure how they were made. I think this tiny spot has huge potential to attract customers, investing in a proper chef and serving fresh food is all it takes. Feel bad about writing this review but hope theyget their act together and produce some excellent food in the near future.

Well there I was with a group of Swedish friends in Grosvenor Square looking for somewhere interesting to eat. Shepherds Market was a favourite area of theirs and so we headed in that direction. On previous occasions they'd been to the larger restaurants and whilst walking around we came upon this restaurant which looked interesting. Indeed, you descend the steps to the basement level it's very quirky and you have to wonder why this restaurant is located where it is.We found a table for the four of us and the lone waiter came along and took our order. The food was very reasonably priced and tasty but you wouldn't describe it as a posh retaurant. All in all we were having a pleasant evening until.....As with all service industries there's always service failures but how you handled them shows the strength of the organisation. Now, purely by accident, the lone waiter spilt some food on one of guests whilst removing the plates. More shockingly, however, there wasn't one word of apology or concern over the fact that there was curry dripping down my friend's coat. He slowly got a cloth whilst my friend hurried to the toilet to clean the mess. The response, or lack of it, from the waiter was shocking. I will definitely not be going there again do not hesitate to recommend that everyone gives this restaurant a wide berth.

In an area replete with diverse dining options, it is always a pleasure to discover a new eatery that boasts good Indian food, extremely friendly and competent service, and great value for the money. Tucked into a basement on the periphery of Shepherd’s market, the New Taj Mahal Restaurant offers a wide variety of traditional Indian cuisine. The food is prepared well and is quite a bargain considering the neighborhood. Despite being a basement restaurant and relatively small, the ambiance is airy and one does not feel cramped (well, maybe a bit cramped if stuck with the tiny two-top table shoe horned between two four-tops). The wine choices were limited but the house wines were surprisingly good and reasonably priced. Overall, a surprisingly good and certainly affordable choice for Indian comfort food.

I was in Shepherd's Market at 2 p.m. and suddenly felt like lunch. I saw the cheap prices advertised outside 'The Taj Mahal' - so went in - and down. I asked the waiter if lunch was still being served: he looked at his watch - then reluctantly nodded his head. He brought a menu which bore no relation at all to the prices outside: but I was hungry and in a rush. About ten minutes later another couple came in to eat: I then saw that the restaurant closed at 3 p.m. so I had been in plenty of time. The waiter bought them the same menu as he gave to me: the couple looked at it - then asked to see the lunch menu. This, I later discovered, had the same sort of food for half the price. The waiter had not showed this to me - and I ended up paying £25 for a modest lunch. What a stupid trick to play! If the circumstances had been different, I would have written a favourable review - but to be cheated like this infuriated me. Go there - the food is old-fashioned Indian-as-we-once-knew - but be on your guard.

We came up in this restaurant after walking around a bit looking for a place to eat. It's nice and cosy and the people are very friendly. The food was the beSt indian we've ever had. Although we stumbled upon it by accident we definitely will be going again and recommend to friends and family.

Look carefully for this little gem close by Shepherds Market. Modest menu but the food is of good quality and served shortly after ordering. Staff are attentive. Prices are good value for money. Only drawback is the limited capacity/space available. Our group of 5 ALL enjoyed themselves. We would return and recommend to anyone looking for a restaurant following after works beers

Our second visit to this restaurant and we weren't disappointed. Although we hadn't booked we were able to be accommodated even though a big party was expected. Food lovely high quality sheek kebab and puri. Main courses lovely too. Change out of £50 for two starters, two mains and a bottle of wine. Great value for its location.

Place was recommended by people we met in the pub of a nearby private club just before Christmas 2014. We love good curry, so we thought we'd give it a try. The restaurant doesn't take reservations, so we went in early on a Friday night and were seated right away, attended to very quickly, but were not given more than a minute to look at the menu before the owner returned to take our order. My wife had a couple of questions and I ordered wine, which we got right away, and as the owner served the wine he said, "I have more people coming and need to take your order". We should have left, but since it was recommended, we stayed, and placed our order. The flavor of the lamb vindaloo was ok, but the vindaloo and rice was slightly over room temperature.I would not recommend this restaurant at all.

Lovely little restaurant, great fresh food - korma flavourful but mild and naans soft and doughy. Prompt service, the place filled up very quickly so would be wise to book in advance.

We like our curries. Jet-lagged but hungry we stumbled in here, recommend by an Indian barman at our lodgings close by. Very pleasantly surprised ...super lamb rogan josh and chicken madras..fresh naan, good rice, not expensive (for Mayfair!). very small but obviously pretty popular ( someone came in with a huge take-away order while we there). Liked it. we'll be back.

Very small resturant off Sheperds Street. I have been to much better Indian restaurants, staff lacked interest, not great at waiting the table. Very cramped with back to back tables. Food nothing to shout about. Cant really recommend this restaurant. I would not return.

Yes it is tiny, but the warm welcome, great service and good food were well worth it. The house red was good quality and a reasonable price, so we enjoyed a bottle of that to accompany our main courses. We are both regular (and picky) curry eaters, and, having ordered our favourites, we were impressed with the authenticity and flavour. For this area, you wont beat the prices, quality and service, so we can recommend for sure, and we will be back.

Stumbled across this place while wandering about London. It's a tiny downstairs closet of a restaurant that you could easily bypass if you blink. The food was fantastic. We ordered the daal, the lamb vindaloo, a couple varieties of naan, rice, and the tandoori chicken. All of it was lovely and quite good. I will certainly return here the next time I visit London.

Absolute perfect spot for a late night ruby after a night out drinking around Shepherds Market. All the usual British favourities. Not the largest restaurant probably holds around 20 people. Tricky descent into the basement restauarant. Biggest quibble is the lack of pint bottles of lager - despite several requests - they still only serve small bottles.

We were staying at the Naval Club in Hill Street, and just wanted a casual place for dinner as the club wasn't doing dinner. Walked down towards Piccadilly and found this place by accident. No one there when we arrived, but it did start to fill up later. We loved it. The food was much better than our local Indian in Crawley, the waiter was efficient and friendly (said we'd made a good choice on the menu) and it was just the right amount. The flavours were authentic and you could really tell the difference. We've been to India and we thought the food was very good for London - it wasn't India, but when in London....Tap water provided, wine Australian and a good price. And the toilets were clean.

This boutique Indian restaurant is just off the beaten path, I almost missed it heading for another curry place. The décor is unique and adds to the atmosphere. Menu has plenty of choices of curry and non-curry cuisine. The waiter was very attentive and made excellent suggestions based on my tastes. Would definitely go again.

Well having visited the Winter Wonderland and then the rather nice trio of pubs in Shepherd Market, we figured a nice curry would perfectly round off the evening - but we were rather let down by this venue.I wish we had done some research in Tripadvisor first as previous reviews are spot on and absolutely fair – take heed and you will not be disappointed.7 of us tipped up to an almost empty restaurant (dead give-away 'bad sign' at 9pm on a Saturday night). The seating area is in a basement, 1 level below the street. We ordered a range of curry's from Korma to Vindaloo with a few trimmings such as Onion bhaji and naan bread. The poppadum’s were OK but I was rather put off with the usual compliments having already spotted them on our way to the table, hanging up from the overhead glass rack of the bar in the open topped quad of stainless pots. Got to be a hygiene issue there? The meals were very slow in arriving, and one was a good 5 mins behind the rest. They were clearly prepared from cold into dishes that were then microwaved. One dish was well over-nuked given the cream was puckered in appearance and starting to separate. It wasn’t very nice. The other dishes were acceptable however my vindaloo was not only lacking in temperature, it was remarkably mild in spices and in my experience wasn’t even at the level of a madras. The onion bhaji was little more than what you’d expect from a supermarket, and the Peshwari Naan was certainly not cooked fresh and was filled with soggy coconut, tasteless, and one ripped off corner was ample. The prices were quite reasonable given it was in the Green Park area and to be honest that is its only plus point apart from the pleasant elderly chap who has owned it for the past 30 years.Overall? Not recommended, there’s dozens of Indian food restaurants in London, walk further.

We got recommended this place by the hotel concierge and the local pub. A great find, and very small and cozy. Food prepared from scratch in the kitchen, and good service. I`ll be back again for sure.

We visited this Indian restaurant on the advice of a friend. It is a very small restaurant in the basement holding only 16 diners in very close quarters. Luckily for us there were no noisy or offensive diners when we were there. The food is good but nothing to rave about. There is an extensive menu so everyone can have their favourite dish. The prices are a bit high for the quality and the location. The service is attentive and the food arrives quite quickly after being ordered. Nothing bad to say but then nothing to rave about either. The area is quite quaint with lots of winding streets, unique buildings and lots of pubs/restaurants.

the best thing is that you are served 5 minute after you place your order. maybe it happened because there was no one else (a very bad signal in itself), but you get the impression that most food just need to be warmed up (the naans for sure). not worth 30 pounds. to eat below street level is not pleasant either. not to recommend, but not a tragedy. you'll easily find something better

We had such a delightful time at this restaurant! Aatri, our host, was incredibly friendly and took great care of us. She went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed, checking in to ensure each dish was just perfect. Her warmth and helpfulness truly made us feel at home. The food was absolutely delicious, and her attention to detail made the experience even better. We’ll definitely be coming back—highly recommend for anyone looking for amazing Indian food and outstanding service!

A big shout out to the Ceo of Golden Shalimar alongside his staff who catered for us last night after we've been to the Derby County game. The service/food was absolutely outstanding 👏 & were even provided with complimentary drinks. The restaurant is definitely a 5* rating for a unique fine dining experience by far!! Thanks once again J

I had dinner here with a friend the other night. The food was the best Indian food I have had in ages. A real 5/5 in my opinion. Service and ambience very good, too. Prices reasonable.

It had been a long time since I had enjoyed a Balti after many great experiences in Birmingham. After last night delivery, I had to check whether my memory wasn't failing me. Sorry but what makes the base of the real McCoy is Onions, just like bread for a sandwich. The £13.95 dish I ordered was anything but a Balti.
