New Regent in Kingston upon Thames

We are local and have used this takeaway a lot over the years. It has gone down hill recently. We had a bad meal a couple of months ago, and we put it down to a one-off... Tonight's meal was awful, greasy spring rolls, soggy and chewy crispy beef - most of the meal went in the bin. The restaurant wasn't busy - it always used to be - so we should have read the signs.

Just eat wouldn't let me leave a review so just wanted to say best chinese restaurant near here, by miles, you deserve it thank you

The place was virtually emptly when i visited , always a bad sign. Unfriendly staff and in my opinion average food. Avoid.

Just ordered our first takeaway (based on reviews from our local Facebook group). Really impressed with every aspect, food arrived on time, piping hot and tasted amazing. Based on our experience tonight, we will be using The New Regent as our new takeaway delivery and couldn’t recommend them more highly.

I have had lots of meals at this restraunt , but feel it has really gone down. The food is so tasteless & bland, very expesive considering most of the food is vegatables. Staff are not very cheerful or chatty. We will not be going back any time soon & unfortunately not be recommending to anyone.

Very mediocre food. The cabbage wrap filling was bland and tasteless. Veg dumplings were again without any flavour or taste. The only item of any flavour was Singapore noodles. The beef stir fry was OK. We left the whole plate of the filling was uneaten the staff did not even have the courtesy or decency to ask why. Service generally was not praiseworthy. Pricing is not cheap and definitely not worth considering quality and service. Will never visit again.

I’ve had take-always many times from here over the years and although pricey, it’s been worth it. Tonight it was really disappointing and I’m gutted! Sauces were watered down. Quality of ingredients is poor, but funnily enough the huge cost was the same. This was a birthday treat and sadly was not good. My daughter even found plastic in a chicken ball which broke her braces. Never again - there’s definitely more reasonably priced Chinese takeaways around. This restaurant is definitely worth avoiding and must of changed hands recently as no where near the quality of food as before.

We really enjoyed our meal at the New Regent, the only restaurant where we have had our temperature taken on entering, which made us feel so safe. We were celebrating a birthday and had the set meal, which was perfect. Although they shut at 10pm we were not rushed out, it was very relaxing and we will definitely return. Many thanks to Ann for all her help.

We only went there as it was only chinese restaurant in the government scheme locally. It was excelent experience all round. THe food was superb and the staff very polite and attentive but not pushy. Will definitely being going back soon

My family of 6 visited here for my brother's 15th birthday. The food and service was great. We each had a set menu. It was great food! It was all very flavoursome and not greasy. The service was friendly and helpful. Thank you and we will be back soon!!

Absolutely Delicious, finally we have found a good Chinese take away after living down south for 8 years. Full of flavour, hot and fresh. Can’t wait to be able to eat in when normality resumes. Will be taking family and friends there and recommend to everyone!

Nothing has changed in this very smart looking restaurant. One is always worried whether the food and service are going to be as good as the last time when you visited. It has a very wide menu. We startedwith the two mixed starters followed by a half a crispy duck. As main courses we chose shredded beef, chicken with cashew nuts, sizzling beef and ginger and finally had sweet and sour pork. All were excellent. We had the house white which balanced with the food. Another restaurant to go back to sometime in the future. One waitress appeared to be having a problem evening,but the others compensated for this. I did think of giving this four starsInstead of five, but as the food was excellent I thought that this would be a bit mean. Another restaurant to come back to.

The food is consistently good at the Regent and this visit was no exception. Lovely, relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, great food and no msg. Our go to place for excellent Chinese food.

I have eaten in the restaurant a few times but have had numerous takeaways over the years as we are local.The food is always excellent, and the staff are most accommodating in letting you make the odd change to the set menus which are great value.Portions are generous, and takeaways always have a generous helping of prawn crackers which are of high quality.Altogether a local gem!!

We have been here multiple times and have had numerous take-away/deliveries - the food is always delicious and tasty. Restaurant has great ambience and the service team are well organised and knowledgeable. S/S Chicken Hong Kong Style is a winner with me and never fails to please. Will return as our Chinese restaurant of choice.

Not had a takeaway from here for ages. Decided to order as far too much MSG from local restaurants which are causing my headaches. Lovely duck, great rice, and sweet and sour chicken. Minimum order for delivery £20

We had a set meal for 4 while working in the area, and overall it was very enjoyable good quality meal, and we all left happy

Ordered takeaway for Father’s Day treat. Waited over an hour then order arrived wrong !Had to ring up twice and asked for items to be replaced. By third time they came we were basically told we should of ordered by number not actual items basically saying our fault. Food was really not up to standard and you normally get satay sauce with satay chicken not curry ! Very disappointed cost us 55 pounds Asked them for some money back

Went with a group of friends and had one of the set menus (without fish). Service was in general good so have no complaints there. Food, however, was very average. No one dish stood out. They claim not to use MSG etc etc..and maybe I am so used to having Chinese meals with MSG, this probably contributed to my review of the food being somewhat unexciting. Perfectly pleasant evening with friends BUT would I go to the restaurant again....NO.

Having written about the terrible service and food at the Orient in Esher, it is great to report on this excellent restaurant. Indeed its location, does not do it justice. The welcome, service and food were all top rated, it compares well with the Good Earth in Esher, and whilst not cheap, is excellent value. Well done.

Historically the Regent has had an excellent reputation including allegedly having Cliff Richards as a frequent visitor (& he lived nowhere close). It has had its dips but this return by us after a couple of years showed it is back on top. It was full including many chinese but the tables are not so close that noise prevents you chatting or hearing. Cramped & noisy eating is a real hate of mine. The service was good although the constant & somewhat pushy filling of glasses is slighty annoying. The staff seemed happy to interact & chat briefly which I personally like. The food arrived quick enough and was all beautiful. The girls wanted to have the starters & then decide how much mains they wanted & this was OK.All in all a good experience & to be repeated. The Regent is not cheap but local chinese restaurant standards but is worth that extra. Perhaps for speacial events or t o impress guests. Certinly our guests were blown away.

Amazing food when going in to eat. Great service, friendly staff. Let down: limited parking around the are, but can be a good thing so you can drink without driving. Recommend: steak in black bean sauce with rice

Gone down hill big time, the last few years it’s declined, used to be the best Chinese in the manor. Not much else to say really!

I cannot believe this is the same restaurant we have been using for the last 20 years. We have always previously enjoyed the good food and service provided by the New Regent. Unfortunately service appears to be going downhill, I have noticed the repeated change in staff recently. We ordered a takeaway for collection, (set meal C for 2) we was told the price and advised it would take about 45 mins, I just got in my car to go and collect as I was leaving my drive a car pulled up outside my house with the takeaway, very puzzled I got out of my car to check. The delivery driver handed me the boxes, I told him I was on my way to collect as we haven’t paid yet, he also handed me the receipt which then sounded alarm bells as it was much more expensive. We then phoned the New Regent to ask why the order has been delivered and was different. They then told me I had it wrong and would not accept that in fact they had messed up and would not allow us to pay for the food, which is now going to be wasted. Need a new Chinese restaurant. It’s a shame you have to select a circle.

Ordered a takeaway they said 1-1.5 hours which i said was fine but then when this time passed they lied about how much longer it would be and 2 hours later still no delivery. Appreciate it’s nye but don’t lie!

Nice atmosphere , great friendly staff and really good food. A great and varied choice to suit all tastes. Really easy to park and get too and from, right near to A3.

I eat here quite often and always love the food and the service. I am vegetarian and find plenty of choice for my taste. I often eat the Monk's Vegetable Hotpot which is delicious. I never manage to eat it all so take the rest home and eat it later! The service is always friendly and courteous. The prices are not the cheapest but the quality of the food is worth that little extra.

Have visited on 5 or 6 occasions, and usually at quiet times. Always a satisfying experience. On the most recent visit, a Weekend evening, they were almost entirely full and I'm sure any other restaurant would have declined to seat just one person. However nothing was too much trouble and a table was found, the following excellent meal and conscientious service at this busiest moment of the week deserves praise for the whole team at the New Regent. Highly recommended.

Was in the area and have always had superb food all be it expensive. This time proved to be my last. Reheated food. 2 separate dishes both had been microwaved. No one could convince me otherwise. Service for my take away was superb. Unfortunately the food was far from it !

We have just bought a set menu A for the princely sum of £36 and have just dumped it in the bin you couldn't chew the crispy shredded beef with chilli it must have been re-heated and it was tough, the spare ribs were dry again obviously heated up. in fact most of the meal had been re-heated several times and was ineradicable. The rice was stodgy and well overcooked. The only edible thing was the seaweed and prawn crackers.We strongly recommend that you do not purchase Chinese food from this restaurant. We did read the previous trip adviser comments and ignored them, now we know the comments made were correct,poor quality food at very expensive prices, needless to say we shall not be going to the ever New Regent again.

This restaurant lists some 13 different allergens which it can omit from dishes on request. The food is tasty, and there is plenty of it, but it is not cheap. Good service with friendly staff, will certainly go again but will order fewer dishes.

Always enjoy a take away or eat in at the New Regent. Great service from attentive staff and always with a smile. Good selection of food and drinks, although can be considered at the more expensive end of the spectrum. Large. Ircular table at the far end of the restaurant which is great for family occasions. Will pack up any leftovers for you to take away!

Well well I’ve been to Hong Kong 11 times and I must say I’ve found a gem of a Chinese restaurant here. Food was amazing the service fantastic. Now I now it’s had some bad reviews on take away delivery meals but trust me this restaurant is a hidden gem. Crispy chicken was unbelievable, peking spare ribs amazing. The prawn toast is to die for and I hate prawns... We had to take a 15 min break for the mains. We had a set menu A the mains dishes were incredible. Highly recommended 5***** is not enough for this little family run restaurant. Many thanks and we will be back...

Possibly one of the worst take aways I’ve ever had to suffer.....£40 of greasy, soggy barely warm food - restaurant informed after delivery and consumption, unfortunately, but may be not surprisingly, they didn’t seem too concerned! Certainly will not order again!!! 😡

We will never order from here again! Terrible service, actually lack of service! Ordered at 7.10pm last night and told an hours wait. This was fine but still waiting 1.5 hours later. Phoned to be put on hold 4 times with no apology or explanation! Arrived at 9pm, demanded a discount & reluctantly given 10% but then realised food was missing! 10% doesn’t even cover it! No apology or offer to bring missing food! Expensive mistake to make, they will not be getting our business again!!!

We order regularly from here and have to pay for the delivery as we live over 3 miles away. Not a problem as the food is worth it. However, after ordering at 7.15 tonight, we checked where the food was at 8.25 to be told it was a few minutes away. Called again at 8.45 to be told it would be leaving shortly. We obviously weren’t very happy about this and told them so, to which we were asked, ‘do you want it or not?’ Not one word of apology, just a woman shouting repeatedly, ‘do you want it or not?’ Absolutely pathetic! We’ve spent thousands here over the last couple of years, both eating in and having food delivered. The Customer Service has just got worse and worse. Another Customer lost I’m afraid!

I have reviewed this restaurant many times. As in previous reviews we thoroughly enjoy this restaurant at least twice a month (often more). In all the years we have visited, we always choose the fish dishes that are all wonderful, from the on the shell scallops to the steamed prawns, steamed sea bass etc. Fabulous.I am a lobster lover and never in my imagination thought that when you order, you are truly getting the freshest, a live lobster cooked to order. Absolutely delicious! Highly recommended.With 2/3 days advance booking you can also reserve live crab.The restaurant is looking lovely with Chinese New Year celebration decor. Year of the dog this year.I read a review from November I believe, a patron, Complaining everything laden in noodles.... the menu is quite clear. You chose your laden noodle dishes. Look past your everyday Chinese takeaway and you will be very surprised.

This used to be a wonderful restaurant with magnificent koi carp pond inside the restaurant many many years ago. Now its as tired and worn out as it surroundings, chipped tables, grubby carpets etc We sat with our family at the large round table in the back of the restaurant but again the surroundings seriously let this place down, chipped crockery, carpets frayed and dirty walls. The food is still good but prefer mine as a takeaway due to the grotty surroundings that ruin the atmosphere and good food.

The restaurant does not sell non-alcoholic beer or similar drinks. Could be a lot of "over the limit" drivers leaving after a meal!

Awful restaurant all meals padded out with noodles. Pretty uninspiring food, very bland, chinese in name only.

This is undoubtedly our favourite Chinese restaurant in Surrey.We don't visit to eat the popular dishes that the general public like to eat. The deep fried dishes, dishes that are served in many other restaurants. We go here to eat freshly cooked fish Chinese style.Delicious steamed and grilled dishes, Sea Bass, Scollops in their shell, prawns etc.Fantastic.Wonderful family run restaurant, exceptional service always!I understand that the dishes we like to choose aren't for everyone's budget but do try them for a special occasion.If you like seafood you won't leave disappointed.

We had beautiful food delivered yesterday evening. Probably the best I have eaten. Delivered piping hot. We had a variety of dishes. Our grandson has a cashew nut allergy which we told the restaurant at the time. They even rang us back to verify the oil that some of our food was cooked in...very impressed. Definitely using this restaurant again

Ate here on a Wednesday evening so was fairly quiet. The menu had a good choice and the food ordered was nice, although asked for no prawns in soup and got them to which it was sorted out. The restaurant and service was good. Not the cheapest at £71 for 2.

My partner and I went there as many friends had recommended it. The food was acceptable, just but nothin like I expected it to be. Several friends had raved about how lovely the food was, pricey but first class. If it was first class I wouldn't have minded the price but to be honest my local takeaway beats this place hands down. That said staff were polite and courteous, even though I was addressed as Mr Patel when we arrived and said we had booked a table in my name, which clearly is not an Asian name, nor do I look Asian.The restaurant could do with a complete refurbishment as it clearly needs updating.To summarise: Food OK but over priced, clearly needs a makeover-takeaway Chinese was nicer

A bit disappointed on this occasion. Salt and pepper squid to start was tasty but rather rubbery. Crispy duck pancakes were good. But Kung Po chicken failed to hit the spot - not particularly authentic and lacked both kick and depth; the chicken itself was not best quality (or possibly over cooked). Bean curd with sweet and sour sauce was similarly underwhelming. We didn't particularly enjoy the wine - Macon Village - maybe it had been kept (poorly) too long? It lacked youthful vibrancy. The house wine was better! Sorry - won't be back for a while.

The service was incredibly slow in our section and people arriving after us left well before us.After an age, the "sizzling beef" came out and it was cold and congealed. We asked them to take it back and to not just reheat it, but cook us a fresh portion. Unfortunately it was reheated and we should have sent it back but due to the long wait, we tried to eat it.There was no sign of customer service from any of the staff and they still had the gall to add 10% service charge on.When we remonstrated with the manager he was apologetic but unwilling (or not empowered) to do anything about the food and the service.We had been there a number of times before but we will never go there again and hopefully many people will read this review and act accordingly.

We have been customers of this restaurant for many years and so familiar I have always forgotten to rate it!A lovely Chinese restaurant, we are huge fans of their fish dishes.Steamed Sea Bass, whole scallops in shell, prawns... everything is beautifully cooked and well presented. Service is fantastic always. Thank you! We know you know the Bosetti's love this restaurant.For anyone complaining about take away, I read one, there are certain things that one should know are not a good take-away option. Prawns, scallops, sizzling dishes etc need to be consumed straight away. How you could think of ordering as a take away is a bit beyond me, and to complain after...Nothing to complain about here. We will continue to return time and time again for years to come I am sure.

Visited for the first time as it was Chinese New Year. The food and service were fine. Had a set meal , there was plenty of it. The staff talked to us about horoscopes and gave us a copy of each of ours. I greatly enjoyed the occasion and recommend.

We visited this restaurant for our anniversary. Firstly we booked a table as we know it can get busy. We were seated straight away and drinks received within 10 mins we ordered our food nothing was too much trouble and the food arrived hot and delicious as always. Thank you will arrive again soon x

Having ordered a takeway and collected it we were excited about trying a different restaurant that was local to us. We always to to the amazing Kim Hong. We had little in the way of time as I collected the order at 9pm as a 2am departure to the airport loomed later. When I got home I unpacked our food to find an over cooked starter of Chilli prawns which were like rubber... They went in the bin. The Chicken in Ginger wasnt much better and the rice.. well that was like a round of bullets. On call I asked if they had temp in the kitchen. The first answer was yes... Then a pause for 3 mins and then it was "absolutely not "... It was rubbish food literally.............

Really good Chinese with nice food. The staff are all really nice people and it's always a nice experience eating in.Highly recommend for Chinese food in the local area.Only downside and why I haven't given it a 5 star review is that you can't pay by card over the phone for take away, cash only! Which is a little inconvenient on a Friday night if you fancy a take away last minute.

This is a remarkably large restaurant, with up-market leanings. Heavy carpet, golden (gold plated?) cutlery, and low, deeply upholstered chairs, and plush carpets. The decor has seen better days, but it is still better than a lot of places.Prices here are not as cheap as some, but generally justified by the quality of the food when eating in, although take-away is sometimes less appetising for unknown reasons. The food which should be at the spicy end of the scale can be a little disappointing and seems to have been tempered for the local palate, but on the whole all very good, and apparently authentic cuisine. And they make a big thing in the front of their menu about not using MSG.On the first visit the staff were quite remote, but having returned a few times they are now friendlier. If there is any criticism it is that the seats will be unusually low for most people and uncomfortably low for some, but there are a few spare cushions if one asks.

Really good, fresh food in a family friendly restaurant. The staff have always been nothing but welcoming making for a lovely dining experience.

Totally reasonable Chinese restaurant. Vegetarian spring rolls, Prawn Dumplings and Sesame Prawn toast were totally fine. Singapore noodles were also good.

Up market Chinese. Food is excellent. Ambiance is calm. Very comfortable chairs more like armchairs than restaurant chairs. Food is superb. We have been a lot and will return again and again. Waiting staff are attentive and knowledgable.

Myself and some famiy and a friend came to this restaurant on my birthday. We booked a table as it was on a friday night, good job we did as the restaurant was full. There is a small car park round the back which customers for the shops on hook parade can use. We were seen to really quickly and drinks were ordered. The restaurant proudly advertises that they do not use any MSG's (monosodium glutamate). Our order was taken by a nice polite waiter and took about 30 mins to arrive but as it was busy thats fair enough. We had ribs,bit chewy, prawn toast, nice, seaweed, not much and smoked chicken, ok. My Dad and friend ordered some prawn dish that was £14!! They liked it. The main meal came and we hadn't ordered much, it as very expensive and we were full by this point. The chicken in yellow bean sauce was very tasty and I really like the crispy sweet chilli beef but my sister said it tasted like vinegar, funny how our palates are all different. My sister had asked for a birthday cake on the phone but something got lost in translation. They didn't offer us dessert or coffee but put the after dinner chocolates on the table and hand wipes as if to say we'd finished. We sat there a bit longer when all of a sudden they bought out a chocolate cake with a candle on it and played happy birthday music, very embarassing but lovely and a nice surprise. They then told us the cake was complimentary, we were very happy with that. So all in all a bit of a mixed bag, food was average with a few high points, the prices too high in my opinion for the average food. Toilet was not pleasant and needs redecorating. If I was invited back I'd go but I wouldn't rush back. I notice on Tripadvisor that there is a listing for this reataurant under the name 'chinese restaurant and takeaway' but it says it is closed, it is very much open.
