New Lam Wah Chinese Take Away in Scottish Borders

I know my food, if you're in your late 40s/50s and want to sample the nostalgia of waking up on a Saturday morning in the 70s to the sight of two almost cleaned plates by the couch, with maybe 3 single rice on each and an onion if you're lucky then this the place to go to. I kid you not this brings back the taste of old school to me with the taste and the authenticity of the guid folks delivering it. I've been eating takeaways all my days almost from Glasgow to Edinburgh, Dundee and beyond and can assure you this is one of the best chinese takeaways I've had the pleasure of eating from and I've had a few meals now and thankfully is right on my doorstep. Well done chef and staff 5/5.

Our first food order fro LWC, and it was first class. Food delicious, still hot, fresh, on time and delivered by a lovely lady. Great customer service. Well done Chef too. Spare ribs peking Thai Lemon chicken Special Chow Mein Dim sum Prawn crackers free Mini spring rolls free Will be back !😋

Terrible. Ordered sweet and sour chicken Cantonese, what they gave me was raw onions, raw green pepper, raw carrot, with sweet and sour drizzled over the top, with chicken bites put on the top. The meal was cold despite eating it within 5 minutes of it being cooked. Also ordered the curry spring rolls, U get two for £4.50, it wasn't worth it they were very small and fairly empty inside with just a curry sauce and a couple of peas. Also the spare ribs were undercooked and should have been cooked longer Easily one of the worst Chinese takeaways in Hawick along with JJ express. Won't order again

Ordered a home delivery on line which they got wrong, phoned them to let them know and they apologised and sent another order, unfortunately the order was wrong again and ended up having prawn crackers for dinner ( although they were amazing) would never order from them again, utterly disappointed

We had an excellent takeaway from the New Lam Wah whilst stopping over in Hawick for 1 night. Prior to the trip, I'd checked out the options for takeaway as we would be arriving quite late and the reviews for all of the local places were hit and miss, setting our expectations low. On the evening, I fancied chinese and so I walked over to this place. I received my hot food within 10 mins, and it was all delicious. I had a box that came with crispy beef, chicken balls, sauce and rice (great value for money). The fried batter wasn't as greasy as from many other chinese takeaways which was a plus, and the veg was cooked al dente - not at all mushy. My husband had wings and chips - both good portions. Spring rolls not greasy either :) I was seriously considering a detour on our homeward journey to pass through Hawick so I could order another box. Thank you for making my evening with an unexpected gem of a meal :)

Easily the worst chinese meal ever bought. Most of it went in the bin.

Been visiting for years same food aware of the prices and cost of living. I wish the previous owners all the best and thank them for many fantastic meals New owners now. Smaller portions and higher prices. It's different and not to our taste. So based on our experience I don't think we will return any time soon.

I ordered a DELIVERY. FROZEN CHIPS HEATED UP CHICKEN WINGS FROZEN AND DEEP FRIED. ONLY THING THAT I CAN SAY WAS FRESH WAS THE 🫑 AND PRAWN CRACKERS. WON'T BE GOING BACK.

Well don’t know what has happened. Always traveled 30 minutes to get good food from here. But tonight was bad meat tasted bad sauces were bad even the free box of salt and pepper was bad for £56. Think it will be the Chinese on other side of road from now on

One hour and forty minutes waiting on a disgusting meal. Kung po with a watery sauce and no cashew nuts! Chow mein , noodles, two slice carrots,slivers of onion and chicken no sauce, no flavour. A disgrace. Felt sorry for delivery driver having to face irate customers. Pure greed taking in to many orders when not capable of fulfilling.

I wish I could say otherwise, but the only thing good about my take out was the speedy delivery. Ordered special fried rice and got a soggy tasteless mess covered in instant gravy with very little meat, lots of spam type cubes and not a single prawn. The sweet and sour sauce was just sort of a red vinegar. What happened? I've had better from here, why is it so awful now. Really disappointed.

We order duck in oyster sauce with bee sprouts it was horrid very bland and tasteless

Food has arrived really quickly which makes me think it's not cooked fresh but simply reheated. Curry sauce has no flavour and very watery. Some meat but tend to bulk it up with veg

The Kon Po beef was excellent and the crispy seaweed was perfect. Ordered and payed online, then collected from the restaurant. What a fantastic service.

Used for first time and chicken curry was OK. The salty munch box was very nice. The prawn crackers just taste of salt.. Would use again if in area.

Food was absolutely rotten a waste of money

SpecialChow mein was fine. crispy chicken with curry sauce was mega salty don't know if it was the sauce or chicken but I have just finished 40 pints of lager after eating it

Ordered chicken fried rice which looked like chicken with boiled rice rather off putting chips and curry sauce were okay . Wouldn't order from here again.

Usually new lam wah is fantastic however got one tonight and horrible isn't the word wings in bbq sauce was awful didn't even resemble bbq sauce seaweed was really soft and greasy and the sweet n sour king prawn had a really awful taste definitely think twice about ordering again spent 40 quid and its all practically going in the bin 😢

The worst chinese meal I have ever had chicken and cashew nuts awful chicken rubbery sauce bland and no colour or taste.

All I can say is GOAT. Best takeaway I have ever had, I swear to god a shrimp fried the rice. Chow mein was scintillating. Hits differently after spitting mad jargon to broads in Gala. Young lad serving us sure knew what he was doing purple devil emoji. This place really helped me get over the messy divorce I endured a few years back.

Never had any problem with new lamb wah. Good food, great service and brilliant with customers. We order from there when we want a takeaway treat and new lamb wah is our go to place. The food is always good quality and speedy delivery too. There has been more than enough times where I have been the difficult customer, changing orders and ordering a fair amount of food but new lamb wah has always been excellent and accommodating to us.

Ordered tonight online. A chicken chow mein, chicken fried rice, and thin noodles. Asked for no mushrooms in chow mein, and no veg in chicken fried rice or thin noodles. I will admit mistakenly I had ordered thick noodles, but surely they would know what I meant, but no the order came completely wrong. The fried rice was correct, but the noodles came with beansprouts, and the chow mein came with veg like normal but no beansprouts. I called and explained what had arrived, they seemed to think the confusion came from the fact I ordered thick noodles, which really makes no sense considering all noodle based dishes had vegetables in them. They were willing to correct the order, which they did. Only this time the chow mein had a couple of beansprouts, and the noodles had beansprouts again. At this point I thought "eff it". I couldn't be bothered phoning yet again. So I put gravy on my chicken fried rice (yes i'm weird). Sat down to eat it, and found my rice all slimey, so spat it out to find that the gravy was full of little slimey bits with the consistency of phlegm. The chow mein was literally swimming in grease. Absolutely rancid. I then called and said I was going to bring the food down to the restaurant, and collect a refund for my order as it was completely inedible, I wouldn't even serve that to a dog. I wish I could explain in more detail how disgusting it was. The young boy was polite enough but when I said I wanted a refund a lady came on the phone, I told her what I planned to do and that the order was wrong yet again, she told me very rudely that the chef had been working over 20 years and that there is nothing wrong with the food so I would not be receiving a refund. Top class customer service. Isn't the first thing you learn, that the customer is always right? I told her I would be writing a bad review, and she told me she didn't care, so here we are. Hawick doesn't offer a great standard of Chinese as it is, but this was horrendous. AVOID AVOID AVOID. Funnily enough I'm not usually one to complain but this was completely ridiculous. Perhaps time to hang up your chef hat pal, cause your food is revolting. Any restaurant would accept a justified complaint, and deal with it in a professional manner.

Good tasting food and delivery service

Have known this take away, on and off, for a few years. Initially it was of good quality but this started to decline until it reached its lowest point last night. The appetiser box for two contained ribs that were so dessicated they looked to be verging on being cremated...the rest of the box we threw away. The duck fried rice: duck over salty and rice greasy...a few nibbles and this was also given to the bin...a good standard if you are wanting to cut down on your food intake.NOT FOR THE DISCERNING DINER.

Curry was really runny, rice was greasy, chicken and sweet corn soup had a strange taste to it Partners chicken chilli garlic was extremely salty and underwhelming, would not order here again

This is the best Chinese me or my partner have ever got. It’s so flavoursome and the portions are massive. We got a takeaway from New Lam Wah a week ago and loved it so much we got another this week to confirm it honestly is the best. 10\10!!! If you’re in Hawick go get one and definitely order the crispy chilli beef 😍❤️

I've been ordering home deliveries from The New Lam Wah for many years now. Always very quick to deliver, the food is excellent, reasonably priced & piping hot. They've been a successful business for 30 years here in Hawick, & it's easy to see why.

No sauce when we ordered for the second time

Love it, great Chinese takeaway and great staff. Always have your order correct and happy to change certain parts of your order. Quick delivery also. Munchies box is well recommended

New Lam Wah has been my go-to Chinese place for the past 3 years or so now after moving to the Borders, lovely staff and brilliant food.

We always order from here and are never disappointed. Food is always ready on time, and very tasty.

Ordered a chicken chow mein and spicy chips. By far the worst I've ever experienced. Noodles were more like super noodles and the chips were soggy and had no taste. I'd give it 0 if I could

Worst food i have ever ate by far the menu was misleading and the pictures were not of any of the food they serve as the owner told me and instead of using the difference sauces as advertised in the menu they just use sweet & sour on everything when I complained the owner was incredibly rude and said well what do you expect it's not going to be as nice as the food pictured in the menu. This was after they forgot part of my order aswell non of which I got an apology for. My advice avoid this place it's not worth it!

We love our local Chinese, it may only be over the road from us, however, it could be miles away and yet still be the only Chinese we'd go to

I had to give this place a star! I'm not a local....feel free to check all my other reviews but by far this is the WORST CURRY i have ever had in Scotland, England or Wales!!! 930pm shop dead... And I've never ever seen curry so thin that it was more comparative to watery soup.....£1.70 wasted. I really hope Hawick has better than this chinese for future visitors - DUSGUSTED!

By far the worst take away i have ever received. Bbq spare ribs were torturous too eat, would recommend using them for an interrogation tool. Thai red curry was equally as awful, bland, sore on the eyes and i was also given what im convinced was auncle bens microwable rice. Highlight of my meal was my fortune cookie however it could have given me a heads up on the lack of fortune I was about to encounter.

Very friendly staff and great food. Highly recommend, the salt and spicy chips are the best ever along with the salt and spicy chicken

Friendly service and fab food will definitely be back, we all really enjoyed our meal including our 2&4 year olds great little kids menu.

Ordered for delivery, took almost an hour to arrive. When it did it was a main meal missing which restaurant denied I had ever ordered. Cost an absolute bomb. All rice and chips are extra racking up the cost. The meals we did get were average in the least, lemon chicken tasted like sweet and sour, beef in the satay was more fat than meat and the chips were soggy. Very poor.

The chicken dish was lovely however I asked for fried rice and got boiled, can't stand boiled rice so did ruin my meal a bit, also got chips and the chips were 90%ultra crispy I u derstand u need to use them up but not all on the same customer please. Chicken dish was lush tho!
