New Inn Public House in North Devon

The food and service from Justin and Julia are fantastic. They are consistently brilliant. The food is warm and hearty and although the menu is extensive, each meal is of the same quality as the next. Last night we ate the Mediterranean carrots, mushrooms in Stilton, fantastic fish pie (Julia’s nan’s recipe), massive lamb chops and pork fillet and they were all beautiful. Try your best to leave room for dessert but if you don’t have room, order one anyway… You’ll want it once it’s there.

Spending 4 nights in the area with my husband and son. We booked dinner t the New Inn for our 1st evening. It was so good we came on our last night too! Justin and Julia were extremely welcoming and it was difficult to choose from the varied menu. Absolutely delicious, fresh home cooked food and large portions. Starters, mains and desserts all amazing. Booking advised.

I honestly can’t even begin to tell you how great this place is. We have been coming since 2018 and always visit whenever we are in the area. This visit it was my birthday and we were treated to some incredible food. My favourite ever main course was a braised pork chop in a leek and bacon sauce… WOW! It melted in the mouth. Everything is cooked to perfection, piping hot and tasty. Service is incredible. My favourite place to dine!

Tucked out the way in rural Goodleigh, but, well worth a visit. Friendly welcome with a wide choice of menu. Incredible food and good service throughout. A must go, if you are in the Area.

Tried this lovely little pub on Saturday evening for dinner. Intended on only having 1 course, but it all looked so gorgeous we went the whole hog. I had the mushroom and Stilton popper for starter which was beautiful, my husband had the home made mackerel pate which was so tasty. Followed by sweet potato curry and Cajun chicken, both were delicious. We were nearly defeated but couldn’t resist sharing a gorgeous homemade pavlova for afters. Highly recommended . Thankyou

Wow!! This place was absolutely incredible. It happened to be pretty much next door to the air bnb we were staying in, so we thought we'd try it out without any real expectations. But we were SO impressed by the food and service that we went back again a couple of nights later. They have a really great menu with so much choice and it's all completely home made and with locally sourced products. The portions are HUGE so make sure you turn up hungry and be sure to book in advance as it fills up really quickly!

Found this gem while visiting the area for 3 days. Wish we had been staying longer as we would definitely have returned. We received a warm welcome and the food was fantastic, Not the usual pub grub and everything freshly cooked and delicious.

Had a fabulous dinner here last week! The Fresh Cod with a White Wine Creamy sauce was to die for along with a beautiful fresh salad. I finished my meal with the heavenly homemade honeycomb ice cream. The food was great and the service both knowledable and friendly. Thank you both so much, cant wait to come back.

Called up to cancel a booking due to ill health was met with nothing but rudeness and the man who answered to phone proceeded to hang up on me while I was mid sentence !!

Great food and service. Really wide choice on the menu. Helpful explanation from Justin. Good sized portions, with both chips and new potatoes served along with veg. Didn't have room for pudding!! Nice selection of beers and wines.

This gem of a pub/restaurant absolutely 'made' our break to Barnstaple area recently. It is almost tucked away and you would never believe such great food would be served here. The owners are really lovely and the food produced by the lady chef is outstanding and excellent value. They don't even have a menu, just a chalkboard with the dishes on it which the owner explains in detail. Amazing dishes such as rabbit, cottage pie with venison or whatever has been sourced that day. We ate there for 3 nights and had 6 different dishes all of which were delicious and very good value. Can't speak highly enough of it. A tiny suggestion would be to vary the vegetables perhaps? Believe the 5 star reviews of this place, it is great. My only regret is missing the chicken and spring onion pie! Can recommend the pavlova dessert, yum. Eat your heart out Tom Kerridge. This is what proper decent pub food should be.

Booked here on a Monday thinking we may be just among a couple of people and why book for a Monday? We had the best experience EVER Do not be deceived by the narrow roads and tight access to car park Beautiful, cosy country inn . Warm and welcoming. Proprietor and lady waiting member of staff so courteous and helpful. Menu on a board as it changes frequently. The proprietor explained the choices that may be unfamiliar like cottage pie made with venison and goat curry to name but two. All food is home made! I settled for chicken dijon and spring onion pie.Large oval dish crammed with chicken thigh meat ,petite pois peas in a wonderful creamy sauce! Covered with a lid of crispy pastry and served with a separate dish of new potatoes, carrots and broccoli. My husband had a large cajun chicken breast, salad garlic mayo and a seperate huge portion of crispy fat chips. All the food was beautifully cooked and served piping hot For dessert I had,sticky toffee pudding and ice cream…..the toffee sauce was to die for!!! My hubby had a large choux bun filled with a caramel cream and covered with a dark chocolate sauce which he told the landlord was not big enough ,because he wanted to eat it again! The whole meal was excellent. If ever we visit Devon and Barnstaple again, we will make a bee line for Goodleigh and The New Inn.

We went to the new inn recently and the food was excellent as usual everything warm. food .plates etc lovely atmosphere and julia and justin very professional and slso friendly cant rate it enough.

When you visit a pub often you can take it for granted and get used to high standards of good food and service. Then you go away and have an indifferent experience and you appreciate what you can enjoy often. And so it is with The New Inn , always a new item ot two on the ever changing menu, served hot and fresh every time. Justin and Julia always make you very welcome and notice when your glass is nearly empty! Currently on the menu is a venison pie which is delicious., highly recommended.

Amazing food Thankyou! Good home cooked food ,we dined here to celebrate a special birthday last night and the food was incredible. The owner came to the table to go through the menu, he explained each and every dish, - I can thoroughly recommend the poached carrots seeped in a wonderful Moroccan style dressing, chickpeas and herbs and spices, this was my starter followed by the best moussaka I have ever tasted. The minced lamb was cooked to perfection inside an aubergine casing. Mmmmmm I refrained from a dessert as I have to watch my sugar intake but the desserts that came out looked just lush! You need to book if you wish to eat but once there you are greeted in a wonderful Devon hospitable way. My sons eat frequently there as they live in the next village and the prices are very reasonable given the quality and quantity for each dish. There is a lovely warm real fire and the pub building is seeped in history, someone has even done a researched genealogy and pinned it up on the notice board. Parking can be awkward as the carpark is at the rear down a very narrow road but there is spaces in the carpark. We can thoroughly recommend you try this gem of a pub. 5•••••

We drove up to this pub in the dark and went inside and was worried we had made a bad choice as no one was In. We couldn't have been more wrong, the welcome was friendly and warm and within a few minutes lots of other people arrived. The menu had a great selection and it was super tasty good. The food was cooked fresh it was hot, flavoursome and we had fabulous service.

We came here on the night of our wedding, there were 10 of us in total. Firstly the service was fantastic. Justin was so friendly and helpful and was there just when you needed a refill or needed something, but wasn't in your face. We had a variety of starters, mains and desserts and we had adults and teenage boys with us as well as the dog. The portion sizes were very generous and the veg was cooked to perfection. Every single meal was delicious and the flavours were gorgeous. This is a great place to eat and if we are in the area, we will definitely return.

Greeted as soon as walked in . Place was spotlessly clean , lovely , cosy atmosphere. When presented with menu board , we had all the meals explained to us . Drinks promptly bought to our table . Food was exceptional, presented beautifully, sides in seperate dishes . The food was absolutely delicious . We then ordered desserts which were to die for , again beautifully presented and delicious . Nothing was to much trouble . Very relaxing evening , fantastic , friendly service , delicious food , lovely clean surroundings. A bit off the beaten track but well well worth it . If we are ever visiting Devon again we would not hesitate return for a meal here . Cannot recommend this place and the owners service , friendliness enough .

What can I say.. This place is just brilliant. Menu was incredible AGAIN. Justin and Julia cannot do anything wrong in my eyes, great service and great food. We were lucky enough to visit The New Inn for dinner last week and it certainly did not disappoint. The host of our air bnb had recommended this place as the local pub we were desperate to try it out and so pleased we did. This is a very popular place as we found out so book in advance, will be worth the wait! Lovely welcome by the owners, Justin and Julia. They have the most amazing pub menu we've ever seen. All homemade and products sourced locally. We went for a three course meal. Our mains - Rose Veal Chop and minced Venison Pie were incredible. We also met some other people on the table across who were delighted with everything as we were. We left with very full happy bellies and very merry! Cannot recommend enough and really hope to visit again one day. Thank you!

What a great find! That great we went twice whilst on holiday. From the moment you walk in Justin makes you feel welcome. Once drinks have been ordered he brings the menu over and goes through all the dishes explaining exactly what everything is. Everything we had was delicious and all cooked to perfection by his wife. We have been here a number of times over the past couple of years and every single time we’ve had a brilliant meal out. Justin and Julia are fantastic hosts and make you feel instantly welcomed. The menu is great and we’ve tried a number of dishes, all of which have been exceptional. The trio of lamb chops are a firm favourite. We love coming here for a special occasion and it never disappoints.

How can one add something new to what others have shouted. Immediately made to feel welcome & at ease. Good wide menu excellently explained by "mine host", well timed service, good sound quality food cooked just right. It's really pleasing when we get real food as opposed to the factory food that is the norm nowadays. Justin & Julia clearly enjoy their pub and make us look for an excuse to be in North Devon again.

We stumbled across this lovely place on line while looking to take my father out for a birthday meal. We didn't want just the usual pub grub - I can cook better fayre at home. Visited The New Inn with my family and had a wonderful meal. We all had different meals off of the fantastic menu, including starters and desserts. First meal of our week in Devon and what a start. Lovely pub, friendly greeting and the service was excellent. Meal for my wife and I on a busy Saturday evening. Started with one portion of the prawns in garlic butter for my wife and I had the homemade mackerel pate with sourdough bread. Very tasty and beautifully cooked. Main courses were one portion of veal and one special of crab and macaroni cheese. Both excellent again, well cooked and seasoned, quality ingredients.We shared a choux bun for pudding - devine chocolate experience.I then encountered an overly reasonable bill, I even thought I had been undercharged.What a fabulous place, run by friendly people offering great service and good food at a good price. We walked here for an evening meal while staying at Coombe Farm B&B, with our three teenage children. The menu had a good range (nicely talked-through by the owner) with some daily specials - all home-cooked. The kids really enjoyed the steak, the chicken and leek pie and the macaroni cheese - and they are normally picky eaters! The cod in a mild curry sauce was great too. We boldly went for puddings which were delicious but be warned, they are big! - the pavlova and the profiterole were especially tasty. Our bill came to £125 including drinks - not so cheap for 5, but excellent value we thought considering the impressive standard of food.

We visit the local area quite frequently and as soon as lockdown eased we had to make sure we visited our favourite haunt. This time I had the chicken liver parfait, AMAZING! The spinach and ricotta dish next was stunning and followed by a fork favourite the lemon posset. Justin and Julia are fantastic, they make you feel so welcomed and at home. Every dish made is homemade and delicious. Thanks again, we will be back!

We went as a family and I have to say everything we all had just superb. The kids both had steaks cooked perfectly, I had the parfait then mussels which were truly amazing. I couldn't fit in a desert but the kids had 2 amazing looking dishes which were both gobbled up. We will definitely be going back there again soon. PS I had a few 'Proper Job' IPAs which were lovely too. I can highly recommend it and it also felt very Covid safe, great as an elderly gent.

We had a fabulous meal. Best steak I have had in a long while. Super friendly service and great selection of wine. The crab macaroni and the parfait also get a special mention.

We went on the wettest October day on record and our evening here mor ethan redeemed the day for us. Goodleigh is a fair way outside Barnstaple especially on a dark and very wet night but it was well worth the effort. We parked immediately outside.This is very much a family owned pub/restaurant and it showed in both the entertaining, pleasant attentiveness of the service and the quality of the food. We shared a baked Camembert as a starter (kindly served without garlic as requested). My partner had the moussaka and I had the trio of Lamb chops . We then shared a choux bun which was superb - so I ate most of it. The portions were generous and the meal including drinks was just £67 for the two of us which seemed very good value. We would very happily return.

Such a fantastic safe environment during these times and you can tell that the menu not only uses local produce but all serves local recipes. I am not aware of any other pub/ restaurant that does this so well.

... the welcome is warm and homely. The menu is incredible. Ham hock was so tasty, mackerel pate, light and delicious. Trio of chops, specially cut are cooked to order perfectly. Two beautiful pheasant breasts, veg and chips. Nothing is too much trouble. We squeezed a creme brulee & a crumble. Go hungry as portions are generous and save space for desserts! Great Covid security too.

Justin and Julia made us feel so welcome and the food was first class. Not your average ‘pub fare’ here. Everything thing we ordered was delicious. We tried to book in a second night, we enjoyed it so much, but understandably they were fully booked.

Starters, main courses and dessert were excellent. The menu is very good with lots of choice , we really didn't know what to pick. The veal, prawns, fish,stuffed fig in parma ham and the waffle were very tasty. Service is brilliant , with the host explaining the the menu to you which was a nice touch. Felt very safe with the covid rules with all the tables socially distanced and the hand sanatiser on entry. The food was on a blackboard so no need to touch a menu. The fig and goat cheese starter was amazing - probably the best starter i have tasted. The main course was beautifully cooked - my only disappointment was there was no room for a desert!. Would definately recommend this place to anyone visiting the area.
