New Inn at Roughton in Norwich

The New Inn is our go to place. Good food and plenty of it with a varied menu to suit everyone. Staff are great. Welcoming and knowledgeable of their product. Nothing is too much trouble. Parking is available and the restaurant/pub is clean and tidy. On a more personal note...thank you for making mum feel special on her 95th birthday.

Stayed in Roughton for a week and had most of our evening meals here. The food is excellent, both me and my husband thoroughly enjoyed every meal we had. Very friendly staff, a lovely atmosphere and the added bonus of Oscar the dog, a real character.

Go here every week as do many of our family and friends. Good traditional food always tasty and good size portions. Been using for a couple of years now and don't go too many others now as it's always lovely here

We had a nice lunch here the food was really lovely, nice and peaceful sitting in the garden our little dog was made very welcome which it’s important to us. My partner had the liver and I had the lasagna it was all very nice.

Roast dinners & cottage pie highly recommended. Variety of fresh vegetables with meals, plenty of gravy (served in boats so able to add to own tastes), refills offered. Varied kids menu - choice of chips or mash, peas or beans with mains. Family group of 5 - plates cleared by all. Good service, value for money.

Called in off speck after visiting felbrigg hall. Had Sunday lunch of Lamb. Plenty of fresh veggies and the lamb was beautiful. More than enough on plate. Dessert was fab Apple pie and custard. Cannot beat an old fashioned dessert. Great staff. Can highly recommend this pub for good quality food and a nice welcome.

Stopped at the pub when travelling from Cromer to Cambridge without having any idea as what type of food was on offer. Very pleasantly surprised to find good pub grub served by a very enthusisatic and capable member of staff. The food was hot, excellent taste and not too expensive. Certainly a place to stop at if in the area. The signage outside the building could be made more eye-catching but certainly worth a visit.

My wife and I along with her cousins had a very nice meal this evening. The roast dinners were ample and the quality was very good. When the bill came it was excellent value for money. The young lady who attended us was very friendly and helpful. We will definitely revisit the New Inn next time we are in the area.

We started going there after several excellent experiences, and have recommended The New Inn to others. It was Sunday lunch with a birthday in mind. We booked. Arriving punctually we could see it was busy, but with previous experience of good service we were content to be patient. After five minutes I went to the bar and ordered drinks and asked to order lunch. Being told that someone would come to the table to take the order .. we waited ... after twenty five minutes our drinks arrived and we ordered food. Watching a number of people who had arrived after us being served ahead of us we asked politely after an hour of sitting at a baking, sunny window table for an indication of when our food might be expected. Twenty minutes later, we were told that the other customers had ordered at the bar so they had been served before us! After nearly 90 minutes the food arrived, with the briefest apology for the delay. Yes the food was excellent, but I was too hot to enjoy it, and the other family members were too frustrated to enjoy it. We also had other plans for afterwards, but.. Settling up, our complaint about the service was made. The manager eventually came and responded, "No one else has complained". I wonder if he thought this was a standard he was proud of and others were content with? Sadly, I must relate this experience to others who have been encouraged by me to visit this establishment. I regularly eat lunch with a friend and we had started coming, although it is a little out of his way. He had started coming with another friend. I doubt that they will be impressed. Happy birthday? No, a lesson learned and we learn from our mistake.

My recent dining experience was truly disappointing. The food was abysmal, lacking any flavour and made me feel sick. The service was equally dreadful; the staff were not only rude but also slow and lazy, making us feel unwelcome. To top it off, there was an unpleasant odor in the restaurant, which further diminished the already dismal atmosphere. I would strongly advise against dining here, as this establishment fails in both food quality and customer service. Save your time and money, and choose a different place to enjoy a satisfying meal with respectful service.

Food was served on a dirty plate and waitress wiped her nose when serving our desert. This was pointed out in a polite manner to who I though was the manager and his reply was along the lines of “well you’ve eaten the food now so you’ll have to pay for it.” I would say to avoid this place unless you are starving, desperate or stupid.

5 minutes drive from Cromer and well worth it. Lovely beer garden and the food and staff are lovely. Great choice of food, recommend the homemade soup, pies and roast dinners.

One of the best breakfasts we have had. Lots of toast too!! Man who serves you is grumpy but there is a sign above the bar warning you (a grumpy man and a lovely lady live here). Would definitely return

Haven't been for some time, but a friend had a good experience. It was excellent. The food was prepared on the premises and good portion size. Main course on good, hot plates and quality. Very tasty desserts. A great range of traditional UK dishes. The only sad bit was we were the only customers! Nevertheless, we were comfortable in the bar, no intrusive background noise. Customer-friendly prices. Places like this are rare treasures. We'll be back soon.

Firstly, I can’t comment on how the food was as we walked out before even ordering. On arrival the man working behind the bar was so rude to us, really grumpy, unwelcoming and made us feel very uncomfortable, like we were a nuisance for booking a table and simply being there. After ordering drinks we were having a look through the menu when 15 minutes later the same man came out to tell us to basically hurry up and order as the kitchen closes in 5 minutes. This was a Saturday night and the place was empty, now we understand why. We left before choosing to spend anymore money here and went to eat at a lovely restaurant in sheringham with lovely friendly staff! Wouldn’t return.

We visited based on local reviews and were not disappointed! Really great, home made food with fantastic service. We felt very welcomed as a family and would 100% recommend and would definitely return.

The food is excellent, nicely cooked and presented by very friendly staff. The pub is dog friendly but only if you sit in the bar rather than the restaurant and I think I would have given this a 5 star review if we could have been in the restaurant. I get that not everyone wants a dog as company for their evening meal but if it is ok for the bar, why not for the restaurant??

Have had lunch here twice in the past month. Excellent roast (Choice of 4) I had lamb which is not very often seen on pub menus these days, 5 vegetables, roast and mashed pots, all piping hot. Excellent meal, at reasonable cost. Staff very pleasant, and made us feel comfortable, Will not hesitate to go back again.

These days, evening Sunday roasts are hard to find but The New Inn was an exceptional find. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating, the food and portion sizes were to perfection, the home made pies and puddings were traditionally English. The pub landlord and its staff should be very proud!

Popped into The New Inn, Roughton on the off chance during a very pleasant walk in this lovely area. We were greeted very warmly and shown into the restaurant area. The staff, all smiling, helpful and relaxed even though the restaurant was pretty much at capacity. Very nice selection of typical pub food complimented by a few specials which included an oriental option. Prices were very reasonable. The roast selection offered a Grandma/grandad portion at a reduced cost. Nice touch!! I had the home made, short crust steak & Guinness pie which was delicious. Vegetables were perfectly cooked, portions were generous and value excellent. The staff are so friendly, lovely smiles, engaging, attentive and helpful. For example they asked if we would like some extra gravy without a prompt when I was just thinking I wouldn't mind some extra gravy. We're in the area for a week. Will definitely be going back there.

The food is excellent traditional pub fare. Great value. We had Gammom steak and Beef lasagne, large portions and unfortunately no room for dessert.

Plenty of choice on the menu, reasonably priced, we both opted for the roast. Served piping hot, lots of different veg and two types of potato. Gravy had a funny taste and was a bit runny and the Yorkshire pud inedible. Meat was ok, but texture was like formed meat as opposed to carved.Staff friendly, full covid measures in place. Decor very dated, and no atmosphere at all. A little light background music would help.It was ok, but I wouldn't go back.

Whilst most places serve you chips, the New Inn has wonderful vegetables. A good selection both on the menu and with the drinks. Great value and great service.

Was a little put off by the musty smell but soon got used to it.Food was fantastic, Mum was unsure about ordering the roast as read a bad review and she is fussy but she had one with my 4 year son and both cleared their plates saying it was lovely. Driving through we decided to stop for breakfast. The best decision we made. The food was freshly cooked to order and there was ample food for any appetite. The coffee was freshly made from beans. I would come here again if I am in the area.

Excellent service from the lady who works here. Not sure how she keeps up with such a busy atmosphere but she got it spot on and still had a smile on her face! Live in the area, and wanted to support a local business that wasn’t immediately on the coast so came here for Sunday lunch. Dated decor but didn’t mind that, we were there for the food. Probably the worst roast we have had in a very long time. The food was dry, hard and of a level of hot only a microwave can obtain. The roast potatoes were obviously bought frozen like Aunt Bessies then deep fried, tasted awful. When we complained that we were expecting a freshly cooked meal and asked if the food was frozen and had been reheated to order, the member of staff couldn’t deny it. What made our experience even worse was how we heard (we presume) the landlady/chef speaking to one of her kitchen staff; how any employer is allowed to call somebody who was obviously working hard for them “stupid”, “slack” and commenting on their weight is beyond us, disgusting behaviour.We absolutely would not return or recommend.

I have used the new inn for a number of years. During that time I have seen all sorts of customers! Currently the person referred to as being rude is trying to ensure everyone is safe and trying to do her job under very difficult circumstances. I have seen all sorts of customers who feel they are more important than the rest of us. I fully support the person referred to and thank her for helping to keep us all safe

Rude staff - Awful service - called in at 1PM lunchtime en route from Cromer to Aylsham on hot day - looking for drinks and possibly a bite to eat - looked inviting at first but then went downhill - got told it would be over an hour’s wait for any food and too busy to show us to a table for drinks. Beer garden available but only if drinking (that’s why we were there!) Told to sit in corner and wait, and wait. Couple in bar said how rude waitress was and shouldn’t be in the service industry. He asked three times for a bag of nuts to go with his beer and got told sternly she was too busy. She couldn’t cope and took it out on customers. We decided to leave and even got told off for going the wrong way. Went to another pub and got served there. Avoid!

Had a most enjoyable meal here with my granddaughter, the food and service was excellent. We felt really safe as they had worked to make the premises a friendly safe environment. Definitely be back.

Fabulous meal out with the family. The staff have done a great job of organising the layout of the pub to make you feel safe and comfortable during these uncertain times. There is a one way system in place which is explained to you as soon as you are seated. The food was outstanding, a few of us had fish and chips and a couple had the scampi. It was absolutely amazing and very reasonably priced. Well done to you all at The new inn. It was lovely to see you and you made our 1st lunch out in a few months very enjoyable. My wife and I have been using this restaurant for many years when on holiday in Norfolk. Always served wonderful dinners with an amazing menu every time. We called in here after visiting Felbrigg Hall - it was a Sunday lunchtime, and they had a steady flow of customers, but weren't at all rushed.The service was good and friendly. The food was basic, but well prepared and tasty - what more can you ask really? The puddings looked wonderful - proper puddings! - but we were too full to attempt one. The premises themselves are a bit tired, but I would rather have that than something bright, sparkling and artificial.I would certainly come here again if I were in the area.

we had 2 evening meals which were very nice and excellent value then the next day we had 2 breakfasts again these were excellent and super value . on both visits the atmos was relaxing and the staff ace , this inn has car parking and is dog friendly we often camp at near by chapel lake , and so will be using this place many more times

My wife and I called in for Saurday lunch. Varied menu covering vegetarian and vegan foods too. The food we ordered was perfectly cooked and full of flavour. The surroundings are a little tired but the excellent food more than makes up for that. We shall certainly visit this restaurant again.

We stayed in the area for 4 days so decided to look for a pub/restaurant where it allowed dogs. We found this one and we visited for Sunday lunch we were taken to our table and ordered our food. It came quickly and it was piping hot. The Sunday lunch was beautiful with fresh vegetables and home made Yorkshire pudding. Staff were very obliging to us and our dog. Having recently moved to the Cromer area we have tried several places for lunch and without doubt the New Inn Roughton is the best. Its welcoming, great value, and quality. We would recommend it most highly for anyone travelling through, visiting, or living locally.

A long drive awaited us and we felt we needed a proper breakfast to start the day. We have driven past The New Inn many times but have never been inside. The sign outside offering breakfasts enticed is in. We weren't disappointed. I had an omelette which was lovely and my fiancee went for the full Monty- which he couldn't finish (believe me that is a first). Service was great and fast and all in all a very lovely breakfast thank you!

The New Inn is a rare find in today’s pub market. It is a traditional pub without the pretensions that you so often find today where you can enjoy a well cooked, nicely presented wide variety of traditional pub fare that is reminiscent of the good pubs of 80 and 90’s when portions were not minuscule and you came away having having had a good meal at a cost that was not outrageous. Their menus cater for most tastes.The bar is well frequented by friendly locals. The welcome is good and the staff are pleasant and helpful without being overly attentive. We have eaten here on numerous occasions and have never been disappointed and will certainly continue with our patronage. If you are looking for pretension, pristine surroundings, obsequious service and pretty pictures on a plate that have been in a water bath for two days this pub is not for you but if you are wanting a well cooked, wholesome, filling meal at a reasonable price I cannot recommend this establishment highly enough. I wish there were still more of this kind of traditional pub out there.

Visited three times during a weeks holiday locally. Not the most friendly welcome but the food was excellent. Large portions and very reasonably priced.

Lovely lunch with my family and black Labrador. She was made welcome by the lovely Cheryl. She even put the air conditioning on for my dog as she was panting. Extensive menu. Friendly fast service, fabulous food. Keep working your magic Cheryl, you’re a star.

In response to Elle S's comments me and my family were at the new inn at the same time and that wasn't what happened. The family in question were pushing to make a problem,they overfilled their plates,were greedy and rude to other customers. When asked about the plates the waitress apologised and said oh sorry, with sincerity. As for the drink order the lady was impatient,and when she asked if they had Malibu the waitress/barmaid said oh yeah, all chipper despite being run off her feet. It's a shame people feel the need to find faults when there aren't any,it seemed to me the lady did everything she could to make people feel welcome. I for one would be happy to go back, food excellent, staff amazing, shame about some of the customers!

If you like a big plateful, this is the place for you. A very generous helping is always given which includes a large variety of perfectly cooked vegetables, a very generous portion of meat and crispy roast potatoes and parsnip. Their roasts really are a must.

Despite what the website says about an 'all you can eat chinese' or the sign outside the New Inn does not serve chinese or oriental food. The interior needs a coat of paint.

Spent 4 nights holidaying in roughton visited this pub every day for drinks in afternoon after walking and had meal on last night . Very welcoming and food was absolutely great , braising steak and veg to die for!! If you like local pubs with character, friendly staff and good food give it a try you won't be disappointed

A traditional village boozer, we were shown straight to the restaurant area by the stern landlord. The menu is not large but is supplemented by a few specials. I opted for 1/2 roast chicken.
