Very friendly staff and good food. Good selection of vegetarian, which was great to see. I had the veg curry which was very nice We would return if we didn't have to pay £10 to get into the village being local ish to Clovelly.

I spent the best part of a day in Clovelly in August. It was muggy: drizzly but warm, and my partner and I could do with some refreshments. On our way back up the hill, we popped into the New Inn, which seemed cosy and quiet enough. Upon seeing the luncheon menu, I thought I might as well have a bite to eat. We ended up staying for over two hours, as groups of other people gradually started trickling in. It's a pleasant pub, nice and cool during the summer, and not too loud either. Especially after such bodily exertion, that crab sandwich was the best thing I ate all day. The service was efficient. Another good thing is that, in the bar area, they have some kind of electric contraption that kills wasps. I hate wasps.

We visited the New Inn while on holiday in North Devon. The pub is a lovely historic building in the beautiful village of Clovelly. We were made very welcome by the manager Coral and Jon. The food was excellent. I would recommend the lasagne which was perfectly cooked and the best meal out I had during our 2 weeks! We heard other customers complimenting the food as well. We would definitely recommend the New Inn.

We were looking forward to our stay at the New Inn, Clovelly. First impressions were great, warm welcome and a swift check-in; walked into our room to be greeted with a great sea view. The bedroom area was clean and tidy but would recommend the owners purchase blackout curtains for the main window and a blind for the small which although misted had no covering at all. The bathroom needs a complete refurb, although clean there are signs of mildew around the bath seal, ceiling light and walls. the staff on duty during the evening in the bar/restaurant were friendly; the bar person especially who worked solidly seemingly on her own for large parts of the evening. Food :( There is no menu on the website and I can only speculate this is due to the prices charged for what would turn out to be poor quality dishes. The burgermeat was bland and overcooked, no bacon jam as promised, cheap burger buns, onion rings that oozed with grease; I ate the meat and left the rest (not many choices in Clovelly so it was eat it or go hungry). Politely complained and 40% taken off of burger price; other guests also apparently had similar issues. Breakfast ingredients were also poor quality. Avoid for food until sorted.

Chalk board outside stated lunch’s available, however not serving food on the day we visited. The barmaid, Sandra, seemed annoyed we were interrupting her solitude by having the audacity to ask for a drink. No smile or banter one would expect from someone working in the hospitality sector. Furthermore she occupied the best seats in the bar area with her drink and book! This pub only survives due to its spectacular location. The manager should take a serious look at his staff and either train or get rid!!!!

The location is beautiful. The walk down the cobbled street from the car park is long but the view alone makes it worth it. No cars are allowed in the village so take some stout shoes to walk down the cobbled street. We asked for a room inside but were told none available. We were given a room in the building opposite to the hotel. The room took a lot of warming up as the windows were so old they wouldn’t close. The room overall needs a lot of work, painting, electrics, some decent furniture and a refit in the very small bathroom. The toiletries were good, the Tea and coffee facilities very basic. No bottle of water and no biscuits. Strongly suggest if booking ahead to insist on a room in the main hotel. The staff were friendly. More clarity needed about the hotel facilities. The food was very good. The dinner of fresh mussels was delicious. The breakfast also very good. We also had an afternoon tea with lovely fresh, warm scones. At checkout they very helpfully provided a service to return the luggage. A man with a sledge who took it to the bottom of the hill and left at the Lion Hotel reception. There is a back way to drive slowly down there!! Going back up this road there is a lovely pottery and shop. Well worth a visit. Whilst the hotel needs some work, the food and location make it worthwhile.

Without doubt The New Inn is in an idyllic setting and it is an old building, however work is needed on its general presentation both outside and inside. On approaching the building the end sitting area looked like it needed a good sweep and general tidy up, the outdoor patio area looked tired and the vegetation needed to be better planned. On returning to the Inn mid afternoon why were there still finished lunch cartons/boxes, some with uneaten food on a table on the outside veranda in full view of the passing public? In room 7 not all all the catches worked on the door to the outside balcony area, a possible security concern? The balcony itself had flower pots but with weeds growing in, next door a three foot high dandelion! The curtains in the room needed attention. The room itself though was fresh, bed comfy and the shower/wc all fine. In the breakfast room plaster was falling of the wall. The actual food served was very good but I was expecting more than just the set "Full English" and cereal/yoghurt/juice offered, a buffet breakfast? Prior to booking I noted on the website the restaurant menu changed daily.........it was the same both nights we stayed, and does not seem to appear on the website now at all! Again the actual food served was very good. The restaurant was a little cramped for space, could possibly better use be made of the Hamlyn room where breakfast is served or are there staffing issues preventing issues and innovations mentioned? The staff I came into contact with were all very helpful and courteous. Overall for the price paid of £160 p.n. for bed and breakfast I felt this stay was not value for money.

We had a nice dinner while on the SW Coast path trek. We did 12+ miles today and were staying up in High Clovelly, about a mile away. Had great service, fish, mussels and crab. All awesome. Best part was the trip back to the Old Smithy was going to be a tough one as we were exhausted from walking. Asked the bartender for a local cabby number and they told us they Dick Turbun nature if the cost for a cab. Like 40 pounds for a mile. The waitress, who I’m so disappointed we didn’t catch her name, offered to drive my wife and I back up as it was on her way home. We learned later she lives across the street from the New Inn on the cobbles. That was sooooo nice. Such a lovely young lady to help us out. We will come back.

Very disappointed. A visit to the village was supposed to be one of the highlights of our holiday. After a wander around we decided the New Inn looked a good place for lunch. However we didn’t get any further than the bar as when we asked about food we were told they stopped serving at 2pm. We arrived just after. We were offered crisps or a cream tea instead - or go to the visitor’s centre - which also didn’t serve hot food after 2pm when we asked. Annoyingly if the time had been displayed outside we’d have gone straight in as we’d walked past the pub earlier. It seemed so odd that they were willing to turn down money rather than make a couple of baguettes (which were £10 each so not cheap) Given you have to pay a substantial entrance fee just to get in the village not being able to get a sandwich there at 2.20pm did feel a bit like rubbing salt in the wound and very unwelcoming.

Despite the fact that I checked when I booked, and they advertise vegan options on a chalk board, outside the Inn, there were no vegan options on the menu.. The waiter said that he would speak to the chef and see what could be offered. I also advised him that I'm lactose intolerant The curry could be made vegan, although the waiter had no idea what kind of curry it was, so I passed. He said that the mushroom tagliatelle could be made vegan with oat milk. I asked if they used fresh pasta and he said he would check. Fresh pasta contains egg. When he came back, he said that the chef normally uses fresh pasta, but he did have some dried pasta. I said OK to this. The dish arrived and it was a watery mushroom spaghetti. No flavour at all. I complained and said that I wasn't happy with it, it was tasteless and I really didn't want an alternative. My husband said his fish and chips were lovely, so I was happy to stay until he finished. The head waiter came to us at the end of the meal, and apologised. He said that the chef had tried to give it flavour by adding pesto! I told him that pesto wasn't vegan and his response was that he didn't know about intolerances or allergies so couldn't comment! Surely it's his job to know about this! I will definitely not recommend this restaurant for anybody vegan.

Had high expectations of this place, especially from the positive reviews and pics on this site From the outside - ticks all the boxes Even the signs enticing you with “freshly caught fish served here” Inside - ok, bar is what you expect Downstairs seating - hmm, the sticky table tops weren’t what I was expecting To be honest, I should’ve spotted the red flags like the wooden cutlery There’s a great big blackboard with the specials of the fresh catch…..doesn’t say ANYWHERE that it’s for evening service only So, what you get for the lunch time menu is extremely limited Seafood was on our mind, so the closest thing that resembled that was cod and chips Now….i didn’t order a take away, so I was expecting cod and chips and even garden peas on a plate - especially for the royal sum of £17 What we received was a cardboard box containing a piece of battered cod and chips along a with a piece of lemon and a paper tub of tartare sauce Positives - the barmaid was friendly enough I get that it’s a tourist trap, staff shortages and inflation can’t be helping….but come on, try harder please?

We did the full Clovelly visit, and called in on the way up. Handy layout, given we had our Dog with us. Quite an eclectic menu, it appears they can offer most hot or cold lunches. We put this to the test by asking for a jacket potato with crab (I steerclear of bread) and my partner wanted fish fingers which were on the kiddie menu. Slight consternation over crab with a baked potato (even though tuna or prawn are listed). The fish finger sandwich neccesitated a call to the kitchen, but we were ON! The crab jacket was fine - plenty of butter. And salad. The fish fingers were definitely packet, and the bread seemed somewhat 'Tesco value'. Nevertheless, it all turned up quickly, with cheery service, and pleasant.Prices were stiff, but i appreciate the costs involved in providing good fare in such a challenging location. Would go again.

A historic pub beautifully nestled into the white cottages of Clovelly, offering good honest food served promptly by friendly staff. Offering an unpopular opinion I’d like to suggest that this pub doesn’t need updating due to its tiresome appearance but rather it needs backdating to reflect the ancient fisherman’s village in which it is located. Perhaps something along the lines of The Prospect of Whitby, London.

What an unusual place is Clovelly; well worth a visit just to experience the curious culture of the village. Of course the architecture and environment of the place is unique, and the regulation flower boxes are amazing, along with the paintwork and cleanliness of the exteriors. (Literally 'regulation' flower boxes - apparently the owner of the village descends and has words with you if your floral display is not up to scratch!)Meanwhile the inside of the New Inn is tired, with ancient faded pictures (of no particular historic interest) poorly hung, mould in the bathroom, an old TV that struggled to show a decent picture, mediocre service, etc, etc. Tired and unloved were the words that came to mind as we pondered our review.Walking around the village and poking our heads round the other public places provided similar observations. Yet of course it's a very convenient place to stay if you're walking the coast path and, unlike the authors of The Salt Path, you're unwilling to wild camp in a quiet corner of the estate ...!

Didn't explore the village as it poured, not the fault of The New Inn, who did their best to ensure that we had a good stay. Hope to return in the spring.

We visited Clovelly and saw this place on the way down the steep slopes of the village. We decided to treat ourselves to a cream tea on the way back up to the top and we really enjoyed it. The lady in the inn was very friendly and the cream tea was delicious. Price was good and it gave us the energy to reach the top!!

We had dinner here in September. The food was very good and the range on offer was reasonably priced British Pub style meals. The eating area is very intimate and adjacent to the Inn bar.

Lovely location and food very good and plentiful. Although a fairly basic menu, the food was of good quality and service good. We were very surprised at the competitive prices for this unique location. Highly recommended.

Stopped off for a cream tea but bar service was slow and lady was rude. We then had to chase our order because it was forgotten about. No apology. Not the way you treat customers, would do back to Clovelly but not this inn. They seemed understaffed but got the feeling that's normal. Also wouldn't recommend having a sign saying

Felt understaffed, waiting at the bar to be served for quite a while. One of us ordered a seafood platter, and unless I am much mistaken, the smoked salmon included may have lived in a river. It was a small amount of salmon, some prawn cocktail and a the remainder garden salad. One quick google search for seafood platter would cover what most might expect in such a dish. There were a table of French visitors and we felt embarrassed at what they may have thought of the dish! The remaining meals were average.

Lovely peaceful garden to enjoy our well deserved cream tea. Great value at about £9 for two and we had two amazing scones each. They were so light and had been warmed through. The clotted cream was sooooo delicious and the jam was lovely and sweet. Would definitely recommend.

what an amazing find. We stopped here for a Sunday carvery. What a lovely meal! 3 meat to choose from and there was plenty. all sorts of veg and the potatoes were to die for! can’t recommend enough! we especially liked the desserts and the hosts were lovely. We were served by a young lad who was so polite and helpful.

We ate here a few months ago and it was ok not really inspiring, we re-visited last week and were very impressed, there was menu with plenty of choice and also a set menu for £20 for 3 courses, we ate of this and it was brilliant, lovely dishes, presented very nicely and the service was much improved also.

Service very good. Food excellent value, also Weatherspoons tries to buy locally produced food if possible and also ethically farmed food, RSPCA approved. Quite comfortable, but can become noisy. Good coffee. Toilets upstairs... quite a long walk if in a rush!

Last Thursday, I ordered a Black Forest hot chocolate and specifically requested it be made extra hot with a foil lid to keep it warm. However, by the time I reached my car, removed the foil, and went to sip my drink, it was lukewarm. Despite the staff assuring me it was extra hot, it wasn't. Perhaps the staff should focus more on meeting customer expectations rather than chatting about non-work-related topics."
