We cannot fault our stay at New Holgate. We were greeted by Jess who was very helpful and accommodating. The chef was brilliant and all our breakfasts were great (poached eggs especially good). The other main staff member (we didn’t get his name but the male on the front desk on Sunday 3rd dec) was also really kind and helpful. Beds were incredibly comfortable. Rooms had everything you need. Quiet spot with quick travel into the centre. Bathroom was nice. Everything was perfectly clean and well looked after. We definitely will look to stay again and I’d recommend it to others.

It is quite important when you go to a place for the first time, especially when it is newly-refurbished and independent, to give them a review. This place is brilliant. The first thing you notice is the quality and tastefulness of the refurb. I stayed in the Holgate Suite, and was greeted by very thick pillows and a good mattress, a fantastic bathroom and shower, and a very snazzy flatscreen TV with all the apps and mod-cons. When you go downstairs for an evening drink, the local produce and whisky bar, the little lounge, and the service is impeccable. Add to that, the breakfast is served in a lovely room and is of the highest quality. You will not regret booking this place, if you get the chance. I look forward to coming back and enjoying another evening in the lounge with a Yorkshire whisky or a G+T. And for the doubters, I gave a 4* for location but the free parking is a godsend, and there are buses outside that will take you around York with no problems. You are about an 8 minute walk from the city walls and about 10 minutes from the station. Finding pubs, restaurants and such is as easy here as from any "Central"-named chain hotel!

A very tastefully refurbished small hotel within easy walking distance of York's shops & restaurants. Our room was a 'double suite', very comfortable and plenty of space for two of us. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent, especially good to see that everything is as locally sourced as possible. Also excellent to see no single-use plastic anywhere in the hotel. I would thoroughly recommend a stay here.

The breakfast at Holgate is outstanding with crispy bacon and perfect poached eggs. Even better, we noticed on the menu that the chef has locally sourced all ingredients. The staff were personal, welcoming and accommodating to all of our needs and we will make sure to visit again soon. A huge thanks!

DISAPPOINTING! The worst treatment ever received in a hotel. After a long 20 minutes of raining at night, they finally deigned to pick up our phone and open the door for us. We came with a guaranteed reservation of 3 nights through eDreams and, when we agreed to check in, the guy at the reception told us very rudely that they had canceled our reservation from "Expedia" and that there was no room for us. As a "favor" he left us one that he had but only for the first night, the other two outside. He left us in the street!! Obviously we complained bitterly and contacted eDreams, who assured us that our reservation had never been canceled and they ended up putting us in another hotel. Apart from all this, the Holgate Bridge Hotel left a lot to be desired in quality, cleanliness and comfort, come on, terrifying to sleep there. It should be sealed by Health. I don't recommend it even to my worst enemy, they are shameless. Complete scam.

Great location. Staff were on the whole pleasant and friendly. For what it was, it was pretty expensive. The interior decoration looks like it was already tired about 30 years ago. The whole place is in serious need of a refurbishment. Heating was fairly non-existant, so I ended up with a cold nose poking out of the duvet - reminded me of my last camping trip. There was cold condensation running down the windows in the morning, reminiscent of a Victorian workhouse. Decent supply of warm water in the shower though. Not sure how a 'full English' doesn't offer beans. I asked for them, and the waiter said they would be added. They weren't. I've never come across a croissant so hard - I could have hammered a nail into the wall with it. However, once I'd crunched my way into it, it was surprisingly tasty. So overall, not a particularly recommended destination. York is full of hotels. I suspect most of them must be better than this.

AVOID AT ALL COST! - I stayed for two nights and paid in advance, was told the bath / toilet was shared between two rooms but there was 4 rooms on that floor!, in the room the TV didn't work, there was no plug in the room sink so you could not even wash your face, the Wifi was spotting at best, the bed light didn't work, and the back door code worked on the first day but then not on the second so had to keep on going around the building to the front door when parking the car in the car parking area in the back road, then the people staying in the next room was up till after 1pm talking / singing loudly and the person above me was up and banding about at 4.30am, Honestly I would of got a better night sleep if i had slept in the car in York centre! On the second night when i tried to talk to the man on reception about the issues his English was not great and it was just brushed over, if i had not paid in advance I would of not stayed the second night, only good thing about this place is it is cheap and has car parking but next time i am in York I would rather paid extra and stay somewhere else and have a good night sleep,

These review’s are great. I found my way here from an Old Rail magazine in the classified section from 1992. I’ve never stayed @ this hotel. It was then called the Holgate Bridge Hotel. and i quote the Ad “ Friendly family supervised hotel. AA 2 Star. Private car park. Special Breaks. Close to city centre. Even closer to ECML. 10 minutes walk to National Railway Museum. “ People complain that the walls are paper thin, The beds are squeaky, Light’s don’t work, It’s old etc etc… That classified ad is nearly 30 yrs old, so makes you wonder how old that place is and it’s great it’s still providing a service..In my book that deserves 5 star’s and a salute.

The worst place we've ever stayed in for a weekend away but was sadly the only place left. The loudest, squeakiest bed imaginable, like something out of a comedy sketch, which would erupt into a plethora of groans and squeaks if you so much as breathed whilst lying upon it. You have quite the dilemma of having the window closed and slowly roasting to death, or having the window open and being deafened by the busiest road in all of York outside. Breakfast was also pretty poor, no beans or hash browns in a full English? Mental! The staff are friendly and kind but that positive is merely papering over the cracks (both literal and figurative) of this hotel. Won't be staying here again that's for sure

I would not recommend this a place to stay to anyone the water took about 20mins to heat up.

We were given the keys to our room only to find the room had not been cleaned after previous guests had left (this was to an extreme where sanitary pads, mouldy milk and dirty bed sheets were left). Furthermore, the SHARED bathroom door did not lock and after making the staff aware of this, they were poor in their attempts to resolve this major issue. If this isn’t bad enough, my friend had an awful experience at breakfast.. she was given a completely raw sausage, undercooked eggs & the man serving the food had a dirty bandage on his thumb which touched the food on her plate. It was extremely hard to get in contact with the ‘desk staff’ and there were several other issues where staff were rude, unhelpful and targeting so I would definitely advise against staying here.

Arrived at the check in time to be told rooms not ready, which wasn’t too bad but when we did manage to check in our bathroom light wasn’t working. The bathroom had no window nor a light over the sink, therefore pitch black, reported to gentleman on reception who said would be sorted. Came back that night, still no light. Reported again at breakfast time, explaining this is second time. Went out for the day, came back at 4pm to change for dinner, still not fixed. Reported to reception again who then came on 3 request but was unable to fix it, electrician needed. On checking out following morning, explained what had happened & was told the manager would call on Monday. On Thursday we received a call to say that £25 would be deducted for the inconvenience from the £250 bill! Needless to say we were not impressed & will not be returning or recommending

The double room was adequate, but sadly the heating did not work. We were given a small heater which helped. On returning to our room early evening drenched the handyman did not know how to operate or the tv.At 8-40 that night the owner came and was cocky about getting the tv on and as we complained about the heating he suggests me and my husband ( we are 66 &71) move to a different place. Next morning after a lovely breakfast in a freezing dining room , where my husband had to wear his coat, I complained about that to which he said if I get the heating sorted out what else are you going to complain about which I said nothing to which he said to me again to leave. As we were only there 2 more days wasn’t worth it, he never got any heating fixed. We have stayed at lots of places but never been treated like this before. So if you do stay there remember don’t complain, abysmal way to be treated especially as we payed up front !

Of the 27,000 people of York I’m pretty sure half of them travel in front of this room either by car, bus, or foot traffic. This Bed and Breakfast met none of my needs, the staff seemed nice enough but we had to call them from our phone for them to even check us in! While I here the breakfast is good we did not stay so I have no comment on that however, the room is a different story. The room is so unbearably hot that you have to keep the windows open overnight, right next to a busy street making the lock on the door somewhat pointless. There was also blood on my bedsheet which was not welcoming to say the least, mold on the shower, and the bathroom itself smelled like cigarette smoke. While this isn’t the worst Bed and Breakfast I’ve stayed in it is in the top 5. Would not recommend this. Sincerely, YoshiWorld

Decor tired, kettle in room wouldn't fit in sink to fill up. They also had someone in the room we were supposed to be staying in so moved our room, then they charged us twice as the manager couldn't work the card machine or replace paper in it. I asked to use the microwave and was glad when staff allowed me to steam sterilise some baby stuff but was horrified when I saw that the microwave was coated in grease inside, thankfully I was using microwave bag. Pros, the staff were friendly but seemed to get all confused one of the days and get peoples breakfast orders wrong. When the Italian guy ran breakfast he didn't go through any options it was just cooked breakfast or not. The breakfast was tasty. The location and parking were good. On arrival you arrive through to the reception area and greeted by a rather nice young lady who gives you the rules and key (even though she forgets to ask for it when you check out). First impressions of the room were good, clean, pleasant and great view on to main road. There seem to be lack of plug sockets and had to take the TV plug out to charge my camera. The wardrobe was broken and didn't tempt fate in case it collapsed. TV needed retuning (something hotels forget to do everywhere). Breakfast was excellent, the chef Pasquale is a lively chap and cooks a splendid breakfast. We had an issue with the waitress when we asked for no egg and tomatoes, sent it back still got the egg, she was later seen on her phone Facebooking. The manager was very accommodating and was very helpful. I would recommend his hotel if you wanted to visit York, near all amenities and easily accessible.

Very nice B&B close to York Train Station. I had a share bathroom but it was close to my room and a great rest. Very good for the price.

Traditional English b&b with English breakfast. The service is very good and pleasant. The bad thing is that it is a little far away and the price is a little high.

Don't chose this hotel. If you re a female and need to use your hair dryer its definitely not a place for you. I stayed there for one night. The room was ok and tidy however as soon as I started using my hair dryer ( its a roller dryer actually so it doesn't produce any air coming out only hot steam with the reaction of wet hair) the fire alarm went on. After second time it went on I was told not to use it again. Not mentioning the fact the landlady would keep banging on my door several times complaining and jumping in my room drawing the curtain up ignoring the fact I was standing there only rapped in my towel. She did not accept the fact that my hair dryer was not to blame but they had a really bad fire alarm system. What happened in the morning was even worse. I made the attempt to use my hair dryer again thinking maybe they have fixed the problem and needed to finish my hair so the fire alarm went on again and I had a man at my door threatening me he would call the police if I use "this thing" again. I reported that to my company who booked that hotel for me and they will never use them again. I had very stressful time, the staff was unfriendly and will not to recommend this place to anyone.

For the price, I was expecting a bit more. We had room 14, which is the first room off the corridor so the fire door slamming gets annoying at 6am when you're trying to have a lie-in. The bathroom light was a joke; it's a small shaver-socket style fitting with a very dim bulb, you may as well shower by candle light. Also the shower cubicle had someone else's hair on the wall. My wife commented that there was no full length mirror, and there's nowhere to do your make-up as the lighting is inadequate. The whole place needs bringing into the 21st century. Breakfast was okay, nothing special. If we were to go back to York, we'd stay elsewhere. We won't be recommending this establishment to friends or relatives.

I didn’t really expect too much from my order, as I placed it way after midnight; From experience, food places that stay open this late, usually serve any old stodgy grub to anyone drunk enough to eat
