New Gables Restaurant in Welwyn Hatfield

We were made to feel very welcome. The food was outstanding. We had a wonderful lunch and my mother had a great time. they all sang Happy Birthday which was special. PS I found my belt at home!

Staff nosy and patronising, repeatedly calling us ‘girls’ at aged 26 and making sarcastic comments at our order choice. Ordered a Bloody Mary as my favourite cocktail and one drink of the night and it was basic tomato juice. We were in and out in 45 minutes which all together proved a very overpriced 45 minutes. Food was good, the only saving grace.

First came here a couple of years ago after a family Christening and was very impressed.We have returned here and there for dinner and loved it every time. Great service with food to match. You can tell the staff love working there and you are made to feel part of the family.Can't wait to visit again shortly!!

First visit to this delightful restaurant; lovely ambience in the outside terrace and a very warm, friendly welcome from the owner and staff. Great menu with a superb selection of starters, we ordered most of the dishes to share between us and highly recommend the prawns, calamari and crabmeat. For mains everyone was more than happy with their choices, I had the ribeye steak, my partner the sea bass, both of which was absolutely delicious, fried zucchini was also a good selection as a side dish. Good choice of drinks, and bottled Keo, so happy days! Service was excellent. Not cheap but well worth it for the quality of the food and for that special occasion. Highly recommended, we will be back!

Returned due to previous ten out of ten visit but oh how times change! Shown to the table and had to ask after 10 minutes for a menu as I was getting bored. Then after 20 minutes after sitting down was asked for drinks. If 7-8 male waiters charging round like headless chickens can't spot a table without a menu and drinks for that long then why so many? Appreciate that they had only just reopened after all the covid precautions in place but it didn't help the head waiter going round shaking people's hands! Food was fantastic but if you can't get the service right why bother , completely spoilt my Birthday evening and won't be going back!

Another amazing evening at this restaurant! Theo and the team are conforming to all the necessary standards and providing and excellent service as always. The food was second to none and faultless as always. Hats off to Theo and the rest of the staff. Can’t wait to return.

Went for lunch for a belated birthday meal the meal was delicious the Risotto was one of best I have eaten excellent service a very pleasant couple of hours spent will definitely return

Yesterday was even more special! My boyfriend asked me to get married in my favorite restaurant nearby Hertford!Steak delicious, Risotto perfect, Wine excellent !!! I have to give my congratulations in special for the manager and all staff ! They make us feel even more special!

Absolutely fabulous meal which was delicious, especially the tiger prawn starter. Excellent service, felt very safe with regard to covid, tables generously spaced apart. Can’t wait to go again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Went tonight for my mums birthday and it was excellent. Staff very welcoming and made time to chat and have a bit of banter. Food was amazing the scallops were to die for. 4 of us all enjoyed it immensely . Dessert came out with happy birthday on plate and candle and the staff sang happy birthday to my mum which was a nice touch. Also they have extended the eat out and we got £40 discount which was unexpected. Already booked to go back

The GablesHertfordSo, after three months of eating at home and take aways a real relief to be out and eating at an establishment that like many others had to close "overnight" with KItchens full of food and Mothers day bookings canclled ,I wanted to visit and support our local eateries and as such the Gables presented the perfect opportunity and i am pleased to say that we were not dissapointedA Fresh Crab Starter for me and a Fillet stek that was simply someting really special as i made the first cut and the knife simply "fell though" the meatWith Calamari and a stunning slab of Salmon cooked on a bed of roasted vegetables garnised with strawberrys for my wife our main courses were really appreciated , to finish off and in support of UK Cheese i had the Cheese Board and my wife a Creme Caramel again nothing to dissapoint here,as we were also celebrating our anniverserry we pushed the boat out with a bottle of Laurent Perrier Rose , which was waiting at the table when we arrived chilled to perfection With Gables the menu is diverse and also ranges in cost so you have a choice as to how much you wish to spend, the team were great and worked hard to deliver great service, price as as expected and i think reflected the quality of the food that someone back of house had taken care to make sure we would enjoy it , Its a busy place, but the Atmosphere last night was really lovely to see with older people really happy to be out from Lockdown The owner is busy and on the floor all night to make sure you have a nice time

Very decent restuarant to visit with family as caters well for young children, albeit equally as enjoyable with friends for lunch and dinner. Sunday roast is certainly worth a try.

we booked a table for 4 last minute. We were so lucky to get in as this Restaurant was fully booked. The owner was so accommodating and we were looked after so well.The food beautifully presented and very well cooked just a lovely balance.The quality of the meat was evident in the taste.All the team made every effort to make our evening a success. Can’t thank Victor at the Gables enough for the fabulous evening we had celebrating my dads 70th birthday last night. His help and support from the day we booked, right up until we left last night was outstanding. Thank you. We hired the upstairs for close family and a few friends. The evening was perfect from start to finish. Food was absolutely outstanding. Cooked and presented to perfection. Thank you for making the night such a happy memorable occasion. We will definitely be coming back. Xx

What amazing food. A great atmosphere, certainly the Eat Out to Help Out helped make the restaurant busy on a Tuesday but we had the best food. The tiger prawns starter is unbelievable - they are baby lobsters, massive!! The rib eye steak was cooked to perfection and every member of my adult family (6 of us) had amazing meals. The owner is a former fishmonger so his fish is second to none, but from my experience, he knows his steak too. We’ll definitely be going again. Not the cheapest night out but you get what you pay for.

Having been living in our own bubble since March we chose the Gables as our first meal out. You are greeted by friendly faces,tables are well spaced out and there is a lovely outdoor eating area. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed but there is still a buzz in the air. We decided to share starters, the crispy calamari with aioli, tiger prawns with chilli and garlic and taramasolata. All tasted delicious, accompanied by a very good white Sancerre wine I was to full for a main course but my husband had the cote de boeuf with peppercorn sauce & fries. It was huge, it took time but he managed to devour the steak which he said was amazing. I highly recommend The Gables, first class food and wine in a safe relaxed atmosphere. It’s also good to support our local restaurant’s after the horrid time they have had. We have booked to return with close friends next week

Clean and welcoming restaurant. Staff were all wonderful and know the menu inside out. We had the spicy sausage and dips as a starter which were lovely and were given a generous portion of pitta to accompany. Main was the chicken skewer and lamb cutlets. My fellow diner thought the lamb cutlets were amazing. Both meats were very tender. Also great selection of desserts it was hard to choose. Highly recommend.

I’m not one to ever really take out the time to write a review but during these challenging times I really wanted to come on here and praise this lovely restaurant. First of all, everything was social distanced and extremely clean and hygienic. You can really tell it’s a family business. They very much care about making sure you’re all comfortable and happy and most of all the food was so so good. We all enjoyed every course! I had the calamari to start and it was so fresh and tasty! Highly recommend and will be returning.

Had a great evening last night, sat outside so no problems regarding social distancing. Tables were spaced out, service was really good and so was the food. Had calamari starter and lamb cutlets, followed by a gorgeous chocolate brownie. Service was very polite and efficient. Will definitely be returning soon, especially for the gin selection!!

The food was beautifully presented and was very tasty but I was very, very glad that I wasn't paying the bill!

We look after our friends Australian Kelpie dog regularly and although very generously they always buy a thank you present, when constantly told not to do so (!), they arranged a dinner out at this venue as the usual Italian restaurant they use in Potters Bar was closed, for the owners annual trip back to Italy.Neither of us four had been to this Mediterranean type venue previously, but will certainly visit again after the meal and service experience we had last night.A very warm evening, with one side of the restaurant opened up to an exterior courtyard, where tables were also laid out; I suspect that this kept the background noise level down, as it was very full. Restaurant is large however, so a quiet meal, as required could be arranged as required.Antonio, the Portugese Restaurant Manager, was an entertainment turn! Joking when taking the orders; super service by all the staff and the food really to die for..fresh and all cooked exactly as requested.I had an unusual, chicken liver starter, thinly chopped livers on a broach type base, with a 'juice' of vegetables, followed by perfectly cooked (rare) lamb chops with lovely fresh French Fries and a roule, plus spinach, with dressing. The chicken skewers with fresh vegetables and Salmon and the other main dish for one of our part,y a fresh white fish dish; all beautifully prepared by their chef.Too full for a sweet, but fresh various coffees, finished us off!I'm not sure of the actual cost, with a bottle of Pinot, a lager for me and two large glasses of house red, as despite my protest, the bill was paid by our hosts.When selecting our fayre from the menu, the prices are fair I feel, for the general ambience, service ethic and food quality; perhaps moderately higher than similar Hertfordshire Restaurants, but certainly worth it I feel.General reviews seem to support this view, apart from one, where given the 'cheeky' banter of the Restaurant Manager mentioned above, I feel the reviewer 'Mr', misunderstood, for the banter I had with Ricardo (if it were him), was enjoyable and fun,with a consummate professional. I think most of the general waiters are encouraged to interact with clients in this way, which in my experience, adds to the event!In a previous life, prior to retirement, I was involved in financing many businesses, Plc's, Corporates, manufacturing and the Service sectors: I can recognise a business with a sound Service ethic, as this establishment demonstrates. Lovely restaurant. Food was fantastic, would really recommend. They were extra busy (which is a good sign) and therefore a little slow, but couldn’t apologise enough. X

Hadn’t been there for several years but decided to go for Sunday lunch with 4 friends who had never been before. We were made to feel very welcome by the staff and shown to our table. Our drinks order was taken quickly and arrived promptly. We did take a while to order as we were busy chatting but we were not rushed and the staff just popped back every few minutes to see if we were ready. We all order a different starter which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Five of us had the rib eye beef roast dinner and one had calves liver. What impressed us was we were asked how we would like our beef cooked. When our lunch arrived it was presented beautiful and I would say one off the best roast dinner I have had in a long time. The beef was cooked perfectly to our liking and the home made Yorkshire puddings were to die for. We then all went for dessert and again they were delicious.I can not recommend this restaurant enough. The staff were friendly the atmosphere was great and the food just perfect. Ok it’s a little bit on the pricey side but when you get such good food who cares ! It’s worth every penny.We’re definitely going back more regularly

I had two starters and it was delicious. Not particularly cheap but worth another visit. I hadn’t been here for ages but was glad I came back. Parking is easy as well.

This is a good restaurant for all occasions and definitely the best restaurant in the whole of Hertfordshire!!!!! Been here twice and had very good food both times. Go for the fish seafood type dishes. I had the grilled octopus and the seafood linguine. Pan fried brill was cooked to perfection. Sticky toffee pudding is just yummy. The service is friendly and excellent. Highly recommend.

We came here with friends for my husband’s birthday and we weren’t disappointed.

We enjoyed a really lovely meal here with friends, the service and food, all three courses, were nicely presented and delicious. The only thing I would say is that the singer and music were too loud , could not speak freely across the table.

We have eaten here quite a few times and the food has always been excellent. The staff are very friendly and really care that you enjoy your meal. Last night I had the sea bream chef's special and it was out of this world. The wine list is great, and of course Friday nights with the live music are great fun and brilliant for a ladies night out. In fact I've even been here for a ladies book club evening (minus the books!)...!!

We celebrated here for a 60th birthday, with a party of 26 people. We couldn’t have asked for anything more every aspect of the evening was perfect. Thank you Theo and your wonderful staff. We will certainly be back soon.

My sisters and I took my mum for a Birthday lunch, the restaurant is stunning it's looks like it was once a house ….you enter a hallway and stair case, then go though to the main restaurant which is beautifully laid out. The waiter was very attentive with a good sense of humour, the restaurant was quiet so we didn't have to wait for anything, The food was fabulous I had the seafood salad as a starter which was a good portion and delicious, main course I had the mussels which came in a really tasty provincial sauce.

We had a wonderful experience for our 50th wedding anniversary party. Although the restaurant was really busy, the service was excellent as was the food. I would recommend it for a special occasion like ours.

Having visited this restaurant tonight with friends I have to say how uncomfortable we were made to feel. Our orders were constantly challenged and questioned very loudly in earshot of neighbouring tables. The food was adequate at best although overpriced. However, the big bugbear was the appalling service. You are NOT meant to make your customers feel uncomfortable. Or talk down to them. The constant upselling is also off putting. We are not children. Asking for more water, substituting mash for fries, asking for parmesan on a pasta dish should not have invited personal comments from the waiting staff.

We live near and it is always a fun night out at The Gables... I love Italian food and they deliver well... it isn’t necessarily an inexpensive option, but it is consistently good.

Always so very welcoming by every member of staff, you instantly feel relaxed. Food is delicious every time we visit. Service is superb.

I have reviewed this restaurant before each time giving 5 stars. Well we have not had the chance to go here for a year or so but returned tonight and is as good as it has always been. Theo and his team looked after us with great attention and the food was sublime, the BBQ duck starter is wonderful as was the chilli king prawns. The main courses of Steak, Liver and lamb cutlets were cooked to perfection. Hope to be able to return soon!

We ate an excellent meal for three. Impeccable service and very tasty food. We would definitely recommend the fish as the owner is extremely knowledgeable and buys the fish.

My husband and I visited on a Friday evening. The service was excellent and the food was amazing. We had the Octopus starter which was on the specials menu and the Calamari. The fish was delicious and fresh- one of the best Calamari dishes I have ever tasted.

Went for dinner with my daughter last Friday and had an absolutely fantastic meal. We had a table at 6.00 as my daughter is 5. We have been there many times and as usual the service is always fantastic and all the waiters make a real fuss over my daughter. The food was outstanding, calamari and crab to start followed by rib eye steak and prawns. Every dish was faultless. I can’t recommend this place enough!

Fabulous. I arranged a birthday dinner for 16. Theo organised one large wide table - it was perfect! Theo and his team were professional courteous and very accommodating . The food and drinks - as always was wonderful - fresh, well presented and delicious and perfect timing. The entertainment was spectacular to listen too - but we also had a good dance! We had a friends birthday lunch here today and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Adapted to my dietary needs perfectly and fun too. Yummy food and everyone’s meals looked lovely especially the lobster linguine special!

I don't often write reviews but we have recently started to re-visit the Gables on a number of occasions and we are always made very welcome, almost a personal touch, friendly while professional. The young gentleman who makes the most fabulous cocktails is charming and clearly knows his stuff, try the caramel porn star martini!!

I booked Gables for a business social dinner for 12 of us, some of our guests from the USA. The service was exceptional and staff so friendly and attentive making the evening superb. The food was beautifully presented and absolutely outstanding in every sense. I highly recommend this restaurant, it is truely awesome. My group couldn't stop talking about their dinner the next day. Thanks Theo and your staff, it was a fabulous evening.

Okay, we’ve lived locally for many years and never ventured in. Tonight we decided to, straight back from holiday and we can only say that it was sensational.. Starters, mains, desserts, wine, service... Everything... sensational. Loved it. We are going back for sure, got our eyes on the Sunday Roasts!! Theo was very attentive but not over the top and we couldn’t fault the waiting staff.. A1. Can’t wait to go back!

In the quiet countryside there sits a buzzing restaurant with outstanding food. We were so impressed by this gem and will travel out of London to come back again!

Great food, wine and a charming atmosphere, but it was the service that was exceptional. I was really impressed by the staff: friendly, cheerful, respectful and knowledgeable. I had a duck starter and a lamb main, but there were lots of other interesting things on the menu so I hope to be back.

Visited Gables On Friday evening, The service and the food was very nice and well presented. The staff not only looked after us but also went out of their way to make sure that we were looked after. I strongly recommend this restaurant. Lovely atmosphere nice food and excellent service.

What a disappointing experience we had, we had a table for 10 for a 50th Birthday and from the moment we arrived it was awful.

Had Calamari to start, perfectly cooked not to rubbery, just lovely.

Went for a friends get together there was 6 in the party. Food was great, so much choice. Three of us had the crab and advacado starter, others went for trio of dips and soup of the day -was so delicious. For main I had the calves liver and bacon which was melt in the mouth. Friends had the Oxtail and the other had the Salmon, they gave the dishes top marks !! We were recommended a great red house wine, service was very good. Would definitely recommend. Will be visiting again very soon

Six of us visited for Sunday lunch. Both the crab and salmon starters were very good and followed by the excellent roast beef. The only criticism would be that the Yorkshire puddings were a bit hard and needed more gravy. Staff attentive without being over barring. Price about right for the quality of the food and service.

Not sure how this restaurant has such good reviews as the food was virtually inedible. My mother and 3 friends went last night for a special birthday meal. They had the crab and avocado starters, which was tasteless and definitely not fresh, followed by calves liver with bacon and mash. The liver was over cooked chunks, the bacon like shoe leather and the mash watery and inedible. Pudding of brownie was ok. The waiters were surly, and the bill on a par with top London restaurants at £130 per couple with one bottle of house wine and no extra drinks (though they did actually add on extra drinks to the bill that hadnt been consumed. Really do not bother with this place, it is NOT good.

We are so glad that we chose The Gables for our family lunch! This was our first visit, and now we can't wait for our next meal at this beautiful restaurant. After a warm welcome, we took time to choose from the excellent menu. Two of us chose monkfish and one chose the lamb cutlets. Everyone was delighted by the taste of everything, and clearly the chef is a master of his craft. Vegetables were included and each one was cooked to perfection. Desserts were equally top class. The wine list is extensive, and prices very fair. Service was friendly and professional, and I must give a special mention to the owner, Theo, who clearly loves his work and treats customers extremely well.

After the Christmas and New Year Hassle this place is just what we needed. We were three couples and we all enjoyed it. Nice atmosphere, a place where you can go and enjoy a lovely quality meal. The menu has a wide variety. Definately something Where you can chat and enjoy a lovely meal. Reasonably priced. The staff were eager to please and looked after us well. I give this place 10/10.

This was my second visit to this lovely little gem of a restaurant. The first was a ‘test’ of sorts as I was looking for a venue to host a surprise birthday lunch for my mother’s 80th birthday. The Gables fitted the bill perfectly so today was a party of 21 diners for a surprise lunch. Theo, Carlos and the team pulled out all the stops to make the event special and memorable. The food and service were excellent and everyone had a wonderful time, especially the birthday ‘girl’. Great job, thoroughly recommend the restaurant, great food, service and ambiance.

We went to Gables on Saturday night for my birthday celebration, the food was fantastic special my scallops my sister calamari was nice and crispy very tested. Really recommend lovely place with very good service

Really not up to expectations food adequate kitchen let waiting staff down. The shepherds pie is unique, and not genuine British. (pulled lamb, no baked potato topping.)

First visit. A Sinatra tribute act. Quite busy and noisy. Went for a seafood starter with Monkfish for main and so did my wife. Unfortunately, neither of us were impressed. My opinion is always that regardless of musical nights for entertainment, if a venue is first and foremost a restaurant, then the food is the reason you visit and your expectations should be met.

Lovely evening with friends - my first visit here. Delicious food - Shame I found shell in my crab & avocado starter as it was otherwise superb. Everyone else enjoyed their food too. Staff are friendly & welcoming & they obviously have a lot of regulars. Not sure the chef understands the concept of vegetarianism though as most meals labelled V on the menu are fish based! There are a couple of veggie pasta dishes but both contain dairy/cheese so no vegan options.

So off we went to Gables again for a superb evening. The ribeye on the bone was so tender and tasteful along with my wife's lamb cutlets that was also wonderful, will return again soon.

Met up with friends for lunch here based on reviews (none of us from area) and were not disappointed. Two of us has Roast Beef and two vegetarians had pasta dishes. All food well presented and tasted very good. Service excellent, attentive but not intrusive. I would eat here regularly if I were local.

We don't come to The Gables very often but like to keep it as a special place for nice occasions as it feels like a treat. Food is usually good, ambiance is lovely and the staff are really welcoming. Have been on a couple of New Year's Eves which is a good night although the food is not the best but more about the music and dancing that night! Would recommend.

This lovely restaurant has been on our ‘to do’ list for several years and we finally made it for a family birthday celebration last Friday evening. Very welcoming maitre d’ and – as we had requested - a round table for six. Food and service were both excellent, but . . .

Saturday night restaurant was packed. Great atmosphere, excellent service and exquisite food as always. One of our favourites. Always get a warm welcome from the whole team.

We recently attended a private party at The Gables. Well WOW! The location and ambience is fantastic. In arrival we were made to feel extremely welcome. The staff throughout the evening couldn't have been more attentive or helpful. Our glasses were never empty but we never felt the staff were intrusive. Now the food....there are no words to express the food but I will try....incredible..tasty...hot..fresh..plenty.. super choices...individual, unbelievably well cooked and beautiful presentation. We are going back to have dinner there and are recommending the Gables to friends. This place would be great for all events including wedding receptions, birthday parties, intimate dinners , family dinners. You will not be disappointed. Please go and enjoy it as much as we did. Can't wait to go back!!!

Attended The Gables for the first time for a private party at the weekend. The service was second to none, lots of waiting & bar staff, all very friendly and helpful. Buffet food was amazing, lovely mix of seafood, pork, chicken, rice dishes. Would definitely return to this fantastic restaurant and would definitely consider booking a private party here in the future.

Had a very pleasant mid week evening meal. Spur of the moment decision. The food was good as usual and the staff every attentive. Nice atmosphere and a reasonable price.

We celebrated my wifes birthday on saturday and had a party of 18 at The Gables. We have eaten there on several occasions and our expectations were high, hence why we booked it. On every level they did us proud. Their cooperation with what we wanted, the quality of the food, their friendly and helpful service - everything was good. We had a lovely evening with no sense of rush at all. The restaurant was packed but throughout they took good care of us and made us feel like the most important table. We were so pleased with everything and am delighted that we booked there. Happy to recommend this to anyone. It is a top restaurant with an excellent and atmospheric ambience. We will be back there soon.

Friends recommend the Gables. We love seafood and meat. I had the seafood pasta and my wife the Lamb. Both cooked perfectly and to our liking.

Visited Gables Saturday lunch with my daughter and grandsons age 3 years and 1 week old. The service and the food was very nice and well presented. The staff not only looked after us but also went out of their way to make sure the boys were looked after. I strongly recommend this restaurant. Lovely atmosphere nice food and excellent service.

First visit through FB recommendations. Certainly lived up to expectations. Warm welcome, friendly service, excellent food. Family late lunch with my mother-in-law and 3 year old son. We had calamari, stuffed chicken and seafood linguini. The food was of excellent quality, flavour and portion size and I ate every last mouthful, it was so delicious. The waiter entertainment my son when he started getting a bit restless and went above and beyond his duties to make us feel welcome. Without doubt I will be returning soon. I am so happy to have found this wonderful gem in the countryside and I am already recommending it to all my friends! Thanks again!

i thought it was a pub but it turned out to be a restaurant.

I had lunch here today with a friend and it was my first visit although she had been several times before. The service was excellent - so friendly and attentive. The food was delicious - I started with mozzarella and several different types of tomato perfect on a hot day like this, my friend had the special of the day asparagus with hollandaise sauce. For main course I couldn't choose between the different roasts so went for mixed - wow what an enormous plate for beef, chicken and pork (with great crackling) - I don't feel I did it justice. My friend had a perfectly booked sea bass. For sweet we had banoffee pie and sticky toffee pud - yummy. Will definitely be back.

A lovely surprise. It was our first visit but we were greeted like long lost friends and the service was excellent all evening. The menu was great, lots of options for all of us. The food was excellent, nice sized portions and very tasty, quality ingredients. It's not cheap but we felt it was value for money and will definitely be going back. The atmosphere for a local village restaurant was really impressive, credit to the many staff who clearly want to make the customer experience special. Loved it!

We booked for Thursday as we didn't want to be too busy. Warm welcome, attentive service, good ambience.Main and deserts were really tasty . Now we have been I will recommend it and come again.

Theo and his team really looked after us throughout our first visit to this restaurant, such great service is becoming rare these days. The food was superb with some real originality on the menu. A lovely evening.

First visit, invited by friends to join them for Sunday lunch, we arrived on time and were shown directly to our table, spotless white linen and napkins. Skipped appertizers and went straight for main course, I choose the rabbit which was one of the best I have eaten

Ate here as part of a party of 16, the service was excellent, none of our food was pre-ordered yet the organisation was spot on so everyone got the meals they ordered & within a few minutes of each other. All the food was delicious and I would definitely go back again either as a group or a couple. The staff are, friendly & attentive but not in-your-face.

Attentive staff. Good service. Pleasantly surprised by the high quality of cooking. Especially the seafood. The quality and cooking skill is what I expect in to find in Spain. Really good. A very enjoyable evening. Hats off to the chefs.
