Our first visit for about 7 years since Sonny, the previous manager, sadly died. Oh dear! Nothing had changed - the same old tired decorations, deflated balloons hanging from the ceiling, the same drab entrance with hand written signs, the same peeling wallpaper. This was a Saturday evening at 7.30, for which we booked (because in the 'old days' you couldn't have got a table without doing so), but there were only two other couples in the whole barn of a restaurant and they had both eaten already, so we were,, for most of the evening, the only people in there. The serving staff both disappeared after we had been brought our food, so we sat with empty dishes for about half an hour before we got up to leave. The Gurkha was once our 'go-to' restaurant in St Austell, but this was a sad experience. Spend a little bit of money on the place, a few tins of paint, some new decorations and partition off at least 50% of the space making it look more inviting and intimate. St Austell is Cornwall's largest town, so 6 people on a Saturday evening in a town centre restaurant is disastrous, but it could so easily be better I almost overlooked the fact that the food was its usual excellent self and it's worth going back just for that and trying to ignore the atmosphere.

Got a takeaway yesterday from this restaurant. Gave me basmati rice despite paying for pilau and the madras curry was full of what I believe to be curry leaves. Overall taste was not great, sauce in the curry’s was more of a water consistency. Won’t be returning

A truly great restaurant, you won't be disappointed. Decided to have dinner here during a recent trip to Cornwall. Was pleasantly surprised and surpassed my expectations. Staff were friendly, kind & attentive - adding to the overall experience. A menu of unique dishes that are exciting & really work, capturing a variety of flavours. For a regular lover of Indian cuisine, I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. A perfect end to a wonderful evening. Johann

The waiter, Rupesh, was welcoming, helpful, informative, professional and friendly. Rupesh asked us which table we would prefer as it was very quiet on a Monday evening. He helped us choose our meals as we were unsure how spicy and tasty some of the items on the menu were. The menu was extensive so should satisfy anyones requirements. All the dishes were very enjoyable. If there was a downside it was trying to find the restaurant as we don't know St. Austell well. The decoration was bright and not to our liking but hey they weren't pretending to be Grand Designs! A family run business

Myself and my husband live in London and are down here for a weekend. We love a good curry so thought we would try it and Oh My Goodness, we were not disappointed. This is a family run business and like I have just said, the food and hospitality was exceptional. If you want good food You Simply MUST try it. GENUINE REVIEW Don’t be fooled my the more then likely fake reviews left daily. we made the mistake of dining here a few days ago, a party of 6 to which 4 of us ended up with quite severe food poisoning the following day. Poor food with bland taste, beers were flat with more a taste of water than beer. Staff tried to overcharge upon payment and got defensive when asking for the receipt. Once the receipt was given we noticed we were being charged £66 pounds more then we should have been for meals and items we didn’t order or eat. Not to mention the dirt and unhygienic areas around the restaurant including, the kitchen (can be seen as it’s open), the toilets and the stair way. These were all disgusting. I will be reporting to health and safety. Save your self the hassle and avoid this place.

Have dined here a few times and each time the food has been excellent! Yes the decor is a bit tired... But so what... Its the food and service you go for isn't it? The young fella who took our order last night was so witty and we had a laugh with his banter.. What a great asset he is, and very knowledgeable about the menu 👌 The lady who checked we were OK and enjoying our meal, what a lovely smile she has, and made us feel so welcome ☺️... The food was sooo good, Im sorry I can't remember the names 😬 as tried something other than the usual balti, buna, etc and tried the Napalese dishes... One word to describe it... Stunning 👌 If you haven't tried this gem yet... Then give it a go... You won't be disappointed!! And prices are very reasonable we spent £64.. 4 drinks highly recommend the Ghurka pilsner.. 2 popadum and sauce tray, 1 meat platter starter, 2 main meals, 1 rice, 2 nan breads... And fab service on top.... Thank you the Ghurka team for a lovely visit, will be back again soon 😊

My advice would be don't have the buffet, especially if you're the only people in the restaurant! We got there at opening time so assumed the place would fill up, it didn't. They did a few take away orders while we were there. The waiter was lovely and it was good service. Our error was going with the buffet, especially as vegetarians. I ended up with a plate of carbs, rice, potato and lentils. All a bit dry and bland. I can't comment on the taste or quality of the menu food hence my 3 stars as honestly my personal experience was really only 1 star. The place could do with a bit of tlc, no great ambience it felt a bit like I was in someone's home and not a restaurant. Also the buffet price downstairs on the wall menu says £11.95, on the menu in the restaurant it says £15.95 so I think they should update the board.

Ordered a takeaway. One of the dishes was rancid and smelt like piss. The bamboo in the dish looked more like skin than bamboo and it stank my kitchen out it was so strong. Called up and they refused to give a refund insisting we eat the other dishes and have that one dish refunded alone or replaced. We did not want this as obviously their hygiene standards are low so would not want to eat from a kitchen willing to send rancid food out. Absolutely disgusting. I was a regular customer but after today I will be going elsewhere.

Undercooked food, bland taste, zero hospitality, zero ambience. This is the first negative review I've ever done. I've never been so disappointed in my life and it's sad to say it came from my own countrypeople. This has to be the worst Nepali food experience I've ever had. Not only did it lack taste, the food were undercooked. There was lack of effort and self respect from the chefs. They need basic cooking training. Kitchen is close to the seating area which makes your clothes stink. After receiving the starters (Samosas and King Prawn) we were underwhelmed by the taste and realised it was undercooked halfway through eating. I am not a fussy eater ps after a long day I was super hungry. But after being there for less than 30 mins I had enough and decided to leave. I asked for one of my starters(Lamb momos) which wasn't ready, to be packed as a takeaway. As this is not a typical meat choice back for this dish in our homeland I wanted to try it. Yet again this too did not fail to disappoint me. The outer wrapping of the dumplings were partially cooked and the uncooked floury bits were visible. Any Nepalese people visiting Cornwall, don't bother. Unless you want experience the same level of disappointment. THIS WAS A BAD TASTE.

Food isn't bad, I think the naan is a bit dense though to be fair. The rice is fine, samosas were okay... not great though. Always find with places such as this "Nepalese restaurant" that also serves Indian dishes... I'd generally avoid the Indian dishes as they won't be as nice. The Nepalese prawn dish I had was decent, I quite liked it. Very mild dish, but can't be going spicy on a work night lol Service was not much to write home about, with only 3 customers you'd think the food would be quicker especially the poppadoms. Damn, though the atmosphere was poor. Its not the most inviting of restaurants. Kind of dingy up a rickety, sticky flight of stairs. Music which kept skipping which was driving me crazy I have to say. Doesnt particularly look very clean either to be honest. But for one night staying down in St Austell I don't mind. If I lived around here though it certainly wouldn't be my regular.

Ate in here recently and was left very underwhelmed. The food was less than average. We eat enough of this kind of food to know that each type of dish looks different from another. Everything we ordered could have been the same thing; meat sat in brown oily sauce. The taste did nothing to change my mind. The staff were pleasant enough as was the service provided but didn’t give any kind of impression that they had been trained properly or knew what they were doing. There was confusion over what 0% lager was or if they even had it and the person who took our order couldn’t tell us anything about the various dishes because she hadn’t eaten them. The cleanliness was questionable. The person who was waiting our table saw something on one of the plates and decided to wipe it with her hand, then the sleeve of her jumper before setting it down in front of my husband. There is not sufficient ventilation. During our meal we noticed that the air was filled with a haze and my eyes were stinging. It was coming straight out from the kitchen, and filtering through to the restaurant seating area. The floor tiles near the kitchen, stairs and toilet area are dangerously slippery. They weren’t wet, they were greasy! Our clothes smelled strongly of cooking oil and a week later it still lingered on our coats. The decor is shabby and there is no ambiance or atmosphere with subtle lighting etc. Felt a little like sitting in a waiting room. Over all not a great experience and left us wishing we hadn’t bothered. 😕

Will be reporting this place to Fsa and local authorities. They are breaking basic rules. Extremely concerned about the standards especially as they promote 5 food hygiene rating. Absolutely abysmal food. Not received the foods ordered to an acceptable standard. Not even the correct ingredients in the dishes apt. 1) tiger prawn chillies fried. Was mainly onions and peppers and definitely not Tiger praens 2) side of onion. Was diced carrot and cucumber 3) vegetable curry with the biriani. Full of 2 types of carrot and sweetcorn. stalk from cabbage or caulifour. No taste. 4) chicken biriani. Wasn't basmati rice. Looked like maggots to start with but could have been chopped noodle. No sign of the ingredients stated on the menu. 5) meat platter. Was meat but definitely not the stated meats per menu. 4 lumps of meat and a samosa that did not resemble anything we had ever tasted before. On arrival to collect our meal screaming children welcomed us plus a very rude lady. 3 times we tried to call to complain and twice greeted with screaming children and lady. We was told the food was not to our taste. No apology or no offer of a replacement meal to make amends. Told it didn't matter if we returned our food as it would make no difference to the outcome. WILL DEFINITELY BE MAKING COMPLAINTS TO RELEVANT AUTHORITIES

We were passing through St Austell and were looking for a great Indian restaurant that served great vegetarian and vegan food. We thought we would give the Nepalese Gurkha Restaurant a try. It is not the most beautiful stairway up into a glamorous restaurant, but a simple decor and comfortable clean interior welcomes you. Our waiter was very professional and accommodating. As the food is made fresh, they were able to adjust dishes to suit the mildness for our children, while making other dishes superspicy for us adults. The food was authentic and delicious! Probably the best indian food we have had in a very long time - very very very good! And we were pleasantly surprised by the bill as it was alot lower than we expected, for such a good amount of really great food! We will be back. This place is a hidden gem in the middle of St Austell. If you like Asian cuisine you must visit. It's based in an old snooker Hall so there is loads of space. We were in mid week so it was a bit quiet. The only down side is that the decor is really tired and in need of lack of paint. But do not let that detract from the excellent, friendly service and the amazing food. I had the tandoori mixed grill. Which had a fab Nepalese twist on what I have had in the past. The worst experience I’ve ever had! The food was tasteless and the staff not helpful at all. I ended up paying a ridiculous 23pounds for paneer makhnie and rice! Never coming here again. If you are vegetarian this place is a definite no no!

OK Wow, if you like Indian food and have not tried Nepalese you should try it here! I had a Nepalese Gurka Meat Platter, then a Chitwan Bazaar with a Mushroom Bhaji & Keema Naan, Amazing, Go here as the food and service are excellent!

From our perspective, nothing to complain about! Staff were very friendly and attentive. Restaurant area and tables are clean and tidy. Tables spaced out nicely, allowing good social distancing. Great choice of food and selection of drinks. Food was lovely, not too oily and it was as described in the menu. We like spice and heat and weren't disappointed! A warning to those that don't like heat, if it says hot, it means hot! With the exception of the lobby/entrance area, it's a comfortable place to eat out. Decor wasn't to our taste but I'm sure they'd say the same about our house! Don't judge a book by its cover, don't judge this place that way either. Let the staff and the food they serve, do the talking. We'll go back for more!

Have no idea why this place has such a high rating. Possibly because the options for Indian/Nepalese food in the area is so limited. You will see from other reviews I eaten at a lot of curry houses and this was one of the worst. It's very tired on the way up the stairs and the overall decor needs a refresh, this said it's not the reason I'm only giving it two stars. We requested momos which were so saturated in oil that we said we couldn't eat them. (Which they did remove from the bill) the rest of the starters were simple, lacked flavour and would have been better getting a supermarket meal from the freezer. We had a hariyali chicken for main with biryani and it was bland. Not just a little bland....almost devoid of any flavour. To add to this the waiter was more interested in who he was on a video call with than customers. On two occasions l have to get up to request more drinks. Considering there were only 4 tables occupied it was poor service. I guess if you're local you should drive further but if you're visiting don't bother.....for the meal price there are many better options for an evening meal.

Unfortunately our experience was appalling! The service when ordering the food was good, offered a drink whilst waiting for our takeaway food. The food in the other hand was inedible 🤢 Very bland, chicken did not taste fresh, prawns were bland and watery. My husband and I have experienced plenty of delicious Indian food, but this was the most tasteless and appalling Indian food we've ever had! We ended up paying over £70 for a meal for 4 people and being hungry because the food was so inedible. Will definitely not be returning again!!

Had a delivery lastnight and the food was shocking and inedible, it was swimming in grease and the meat was tough dry and certainly not fresh and smelt bad, i had one prawn in the mixed grill that absolutely stank and what i did eat kept me up all night. It was very expensive and the food very bad and i complained and was offered 10% discount on my next order but 100% wont ever be ordering again from this place.

Service is shocking, we preordered had no idea what we were having brought out random dishes. Staff have no idea about customer service. Honestly wouldn’t bother.

Always rated here but our last takeaway was inedible. A huge disappointment and a huge waste of money. Messaged but no reply.

I almost felt part of the family as a little boy was being reluctantly prepared for his bed! However, despite the obvious pressure's the server managed to take my order and bring my delicious meal in good time. I really enjoyed the meal opting for a mild tandoori it was full of flavour and delicious. Will definitely go again when next in Cornwall.

Dated inside and tried looking. The meal was fair, I didn't really enjoy it and certainly doesn't warrant it's good food review of excellent, don't know how they achieved that status I wouldn't eat their again. Give it a miss and ask the locals for recommendations The staff are friendly and helpful so that was a positive.

We have always avoided going in to this restaurant purely because of the appearance of the outside menu display and the scruffy look of the entrance and stairs! So last night it was raining and we didn’t want to walk to our usual curry house, so we thought we would give it a try! We were glad we went in, the food was excellent and the service was the same! My wife had the Nepalese lamb shank which was very tender, with a very well balanced spiced marinade! I had the Lamb Madras which was also perfect! We had a bottle of Pino and a Magners which was very well priced and not over the top! We will be eating there again, never judge a book by its cover!! If the owners read this review I would recommend they make the entrance more appealing and clean and paint the toilet doors as they look awful! Thank you 😊 x

Just had a delivery from Gurkha and everything was really poor. We were told delivery would be within an hour but after 1 hour we rang to be told it was on its way, it was 1hr35m before arriving. When it arrived we were talking to the restaurant saying we would send it back and would pay less which after a chat with the drivers/restaurantwe did otherwise it would have been refused. The curries were so saucy with very little else in them and they chicken tikka was so chunky, no peppers in the Jalfrezi and the rice was really bland. Their onion salad had carrot in it and no coriander and was clearly made as cheap as possible and overall the food was well below average and late. Really poor experience which we won't be having again.

Whenever I visit Cornwall I make every effort to come here to eat. Everything I have had is an incredible taste experience and last night was no difference. Service and ambience just flowed faultlessly. Lovely friendly people looking after you! My Grandson was impressed with the depth of flavour in his dish, as, indeed so was I. This is the nicest food ever and I need to move to Liskeard to become a regular customer!

Lovely meal, beautiful Nan Bread, puffed up and not doughy or greasy, Tarka Dahl exceptionally good and a very flavoursome Malahi Dali (we ate in- remember for takeaway Nan doesn’t travel well and you get lots of sauce with the Malahi Dali which is great for dunking the Nan bead in). Great value for money in this part of the world, be aware they have a busy takeaway service as well

Had a lovely meal in here, went on a Sunday night. Staff were very good , food excellent , would recommend. Starters and main meals had, exactly as stated on menu...portion sizes very good. Tourist to area and second visit in a few years...
