Absolutely incredible place. Very quick service and very reasonable price considering a city center location. Nasi goreng was perfect, so was the pan fried beef noodles. Not your usual greasy take away food, everything was packed with flavours and didn't leave us feeling bloaty or stodged afterwards. Staff very friendly. I recommend the steamed dumplings, and the satay chicken.

Food was good. But not as flavoursome as it should be. I guess the owner toned down on the flavour, spiciness and msg to cater to the local palate. Big portion, can be shared. Halal meat and chicken. It was a full house during lunch hour on our visit. Tables are too close to each other. Can get a little crampy.

Food is not bad for me and the service is good as well. The only reason I give this restaurant 1 star for the service is because I am disappointed that they will charge me if I asked for hot water for my baby who needs to drink milk. I have lived in the UK for 3 years and in many restaurants that I have visited, this restaurant is the only one that charges for asking for hot water for my baby milk while I have spent £67 eating in this restaurant. I mean where is your sense of humanity for the little baby who wants milk. After that, I went to Gregg's café asking for hot water without buying their food and they gave it for free and without hesitation. Shame on the service

We have been here multiple times since 2014 and found the food , service and ambience was always very good . My husband wanted to go here again for his birthday dinner so we booked 3 weeks in advance knowing that it would be booked up during the Edinburgh festival. This time we felt we were crammed into a table at the back of the restaurant and it was very tricky to even get out to go to the toilet. Seems like the owners had crammed even more tables and seats in for the festival customers?? This made the restaurant uncomfortable and very warm indeed , so we opted to have main course because we didn’t want to be in a very warm and noisy atmosphere for too long . There is no AC and because it was a windy day all doors were closed . The portions are generous and tasty enough but my daughter’s meal of nasi goreng was not warm unfortunately and had an overdone fried egg on top . The staff are nice enough even while rushed off their feet

We visited here during the Edinburgh festival. The restaurant was very busy, as is all Edinburgh restaurants this time of year. We had a short wait for a table. The tables were quite tightly packed together. There are tables outside as well as inside but no obvious cover or heaters. We ordered a starter and a main. What we failed to understand was that apparently during the festival, if you order a starter and main, they arrive at the same time. Clearly we weren't happy about this. I did enjoy my main course but would have enjoyed it more if it had been hotter when I got around to it and if I hadn't stuffed my starter down so fast. To be fair, the person in charge that evening apologised and said that this was how the chef was having to operate during the festival. It doesn't work for us and therefore won't be back.

Definitely recommend booking. I showed up without a booking they still seated me but definitely messed things up for the poor staff. They are so insanely busy and for good reason! They have such a cosy atmosphere with amazing food. Not the cheapest of places but their food is worth every penny. Amazing food friendly staff and the vibes are all 10/10 I will be returning very soon!

Too bad it's not possible to give more than 5 stars for the kitchen. After 10 days of hamburgers and fish&ships we decided to try a more exotic restaurant and frankly, this place is worth the detour. The cuisine is succulent and we found the fragrances that we knew during our travels in Asia.

I was very disappointed with the service. We ordered non-spicy rice noodles for kids last night, waited 30mins for it then found out it was spicy. We phoned in but the guy on the phone said the sauce they used for that dish is meant to be a bit spicy. Well then they really shouldn’t advertise it as non-spicy. He said we can have an exchange for chicken/ prawn fried rice instead which is the only plate that was mentioned as properly non-spicy out of the whole menu. No apology or option to have a refund. Then we needed to drive back to exchanged the dish after 20mins. So here was 50mins of waiting to get a portion of fried rice. Again no apology at all. No impressed. Not to mention the fried rice was cheaper than what we originally ordered. They didn’t even refund the difference in price for us. Won’t go back again.

We are very disappointed following our visit to this restaurant yesterday. The service was appalling, and the food I would describe as average. The starters did not come out together and arrived spanning 45 minutes. Some of the group had finished their's a good 30 minutes before others arrived. One had to be returned because it was cold. When it came to the main courses, side dishes arrived without their accompanying main and mains arrived without their accompanying sides! The food came out sporadically, and, like the starters, some of the group had completed their meals prior to others even receiving theirs. The service of the main course spanned over 60 minutes. Food ended up being cold, but due to the obvious shambles in the kitchen, we didn't feel we could return food to the kitchen as we had a show to go to and were now running late for it. We made it clear to the staff that we were unhappy with the service, and when they presented the bill, in fairness to them, they had removed service charge and deducted 10%. However, on checking the bill, they had also added an extra bottle of Prosecco and charged us for a dish, which we ordered, but didn't arrived. A genuine mistake, I'm sure, but nevertheless annoying. What we did notice was numerous home delivery meals going out with delivery drivers, and it was clear that they were receiving preferential treatment over the diners in the restaurant. We felt sorry for the waiting staff, who were clearly trying their best, but it was obviously a kitchen issue where they clearly couldn't cope. We were aware of other diners experiencing similar issues. We appreciate that it's the start of the Edinburgh Festival and restaurants are busy however it was obvious that this restaurant had overstretched itself. During the Festival, people have tight timescales to meet for dining and show attendance. Booking a meal almost 3 hours prior to the start of our show, seemed 100% reasonable however, this was not the case last night.

I've been to the best Malaysians in London and in my opinion this excels them. Authentic, no fuss, delicious food. Reminds me of some of the best local meals we have had in Malaysia. It does have a big menu and looking at the reviews you must need to know what to order, but you can't go wrong with the usual classics. Also the portions are generous at v reasonable prices. Actually, Roti King in London possibly does the curry bit of roti canai better; but this roti is even flakier, which is some skill. What's not to like!

The service can be described as terrible, especially the lady at the front desk. I don't know if she has suffered some major setback in her life. Because she served customer with a bitter face. And customers have to go to the counter in person for asking the service. Or maybe she sees the face of an Asian too often and get used to treat customers differently due to their look. And she can no longer care about the service attitude. How do you have the nerve to charge a service fee?

3.5/5 if I could. A packed place with a large menu of overall decent food. I recommend trying once for something unique, but a some dishes simply arent worth it. The roti canai was VERY oily and I wouldnt have again. Duck malaysian curry was nice only because the roast duck was amazing. The curry was pasty and not so flavorful on its own. That and rice were ~£18 on its own. The portion was good and I did save half for takeaway, so maybe it was worth. Nasi Goreng was HUGE and tasty!! Kari Laksa and their Prawn Mee (noodles) were also great. Service was also questionable. Servers were friendly but sometimes uncoordinated. I was also unsure what the chinese lady was saying sometimes. I'd recommend the "Classic Malaysian Street Food" section and maybe the roast duck items. I may come back

Situated at the heart of the re-generated old hospital site (Quatermile), we went for a light lunch as it was next door to our car park and we had just driven up to Edinburgh. We had a selection of Dim sum and starters with green tea and ginger beer. The satay was one of the best i've ever eaten, the shredded squid was excellent and the traditional Enche Kabin (fried chicken) was superb. The Guo Tie (gyoza) was a bit disappointing, as was the steamed prawn and chicken tauhu roll. Overall very good but not quite 5 stars.

Nice foods, nice atmosphere, Nasi Lemak is recommended, the flavour and texture of coconut rice, fried chicken, ikan teri, peanut, and sambal represent the real taste although the sambal it's not quite punchy in terms of its spicyness - maybe adjusted to the UK taste. The salad is perfect though, a nice and balanced combination of sweet, sour, flavourful and fresh vegetables. Kangkung is ok (more on the salty side) but lacking richness in flavour. It's just good for those who have missed this Southeast Asian (Malaysia and Indonesia) traditional stir fried vegetable - although to my taste it's too simple - a proper stir fried kangkung should use real shallot, chilli, and garlic, not just some Asian ready sauces. My favourite is the shredded beef, which tastes crunchy sweet and a little bit spicy/savoury. The desserts are fantastic. Try black sticky rice with coconut milk added with vanilla ice cream. Not too sweet, just perfect the texture and the taste. Teh tarik is also recommended for drink.

Just went to Nanyang for my birthday meal. I've been craving authentic Malaysian food since we visited Malaysia a few years ago. The food was really flavoursome and definitely curbed the craving. However, the salt and chilli chicken was really hard, not just the coating but the chicken itself. Most of it went untouched. We asked for some sweet chilli sauce to have the chicken with to elevate the dryness. I expressed my concerns to the waiter who took the dish back to the kitchen to discuss, he brought it back out and said the coating was supposed to be like that because it's fried. It wasn't just the coating but the chicken itself, it was borderline inedible. The chicken on the Nasi Goring Ayam also seemed reheated rather than fresh. The food was tasty but very clearly not fresh and reheated instead. We still had a nice evening, the staff are very welcoming and the restaurant in itself has a lovely atmosphere. I guess it can be a hit or a miss if you get fresh food or not.

I've eaten at Nanyang quite a few times and it is always good. Today was different, it was still good but given we're still in lockdown (of sorts) we had to eat outside. Firstly, the outside area is lovely and felt safe. Tables are spaced out, cleaned and undercover. There are patio heaters in sufficient number. Secondly, the attentive staff all wore masks and impressively managed to hear our orders through our own. Thirdly, despite the greater distance from the kitchen and the cooling effects of the outside breeze, the food was hot I'm not a bold eater. Malaysian is ase exotic as I dare. I wouldn't take any friends unable to consider anything more than fish and chips or pizza here. Despite that, I tried something new - the chilli shredded chicken and had coconut rice with it. Delish! It felt much lighter and perhaps slightly more fruity then the beef counterpart that I tried previously. The meal is served in a birds nest bowl of noodles which I presume I could eat but did not. Nanyang isn't terribly expensive either despite being incredibly central. Effectively, it's just off the Meadows. I doubt it's more than 15 minutes walk from Princess Street either. [June 22 update - still good, still ratey] [January 23 update - nice, warm and busy] [April 23 update - still great, thankfully] [June 23 update - popular with people in the know] [August 23 update - The newly modified menu is good]

Run by Malaysian Chinese, the food reflects this. Popular place, booking recommended. Generous portions. Depending on what you order might be more authentic than other dishes, not a lot is home cooked. Roti chanai (did not enjoy, frozen pastry fried in oil with ready made curry sauce), satay was ok. Nasi lemak is not really authentic, fried noodle and rice dishes are good. Was very excited to discover this restaurant, but a bit disappointed with authenticity.

Worst attitude experienced ever. A female staff called me to cancel the order because they don’t have the food I ordered. After the first call, I tried to cancel on the app. But since they had received the order, I cannot cancel it. So I called back the explain this situation. The lady became mad at me and even didn’t allow me to say a sentence. Then she passed her phone to another staff with a extremely impatient attitude. She said that she need to find a person who can speak Chinese in order to communicate with me. But I mean, that’s not the language thing but the attitude thing. She is the first person that saying I cannot communicate with because of my English. After she passed the phone to the other person, what we talk is the totally same thing. If there should have someone who need to take the responsibility for the cancellation of my order, that’s obviously not me. I have ordered food on the menu and have paid for it. If you don’t have it , you should update the menu instead of blame on the customers saying something that why you order it. It is on the menu, right? It is not my responsibility to cancel the order. Great great food but service wasn't great. It was fine but we waited quite a while for some dishes to come out (about 10 minutes between the first and last) and then after we finished the main course we asked to order more drinks and food. Only one of the drinks were brought out and it took about 20 minutes before they even brought a menu out and then they again didn't return for about 20 minutes more (despite being asked multiple times to come take our order) but instead of taking the order they took our menu and gave us the bill and told us we had to leave as another booking was soon to arrive. No staff were unfriendly and I understand more bookings needed the table but in the time we wasted asking for more food we could've ordered and eaten deserts. Also a server could've explained that we wouldn't have time for a second course or some sort of communication rather than ignoring us then giving us a bill and saying to leave. I'd rate lower if the food didn't make up for it, staff were friendly just needed to be a bit more attentive.

I went there for my birthday celebration and loved the food. It was delicious! However, I believe most restaurants give the birthday person something for free (a drink/dessert/cake) and I was a bit sad since I was not even wished "happy birthday" by any of the staff. This is the first time I have experienced something like this. I think the customer service should definitely be improved in that regard. You should make people celebrating birthdays/anniversaries feel special on their special day. Even just wishing them and acknowledging that they chose to spend an important day at your establishment would be nice.

Very busy, the service a bit slow because when I went it was dinner time Food is superb can really taste the “charred” in CKT Hot & sour soup too sour and too much tomato for my liking I will come back again cos the main dishes all look good and legit

Do not come here!!! If I could I would give 0 star for everything. Service and people here are horrible! Came in through the wrong doors in a massive rain and was not permitted to walk to the waiting area 5 m away though restsaurant and was sent back in a rain. Then on other side was created by a horrible person that didn’t explain that a wait will be 40 min. They had plenary of spaces there. Kept on waiting for ages.

We’ve been customers for years and tonight was the first meal we’ve had which was substandard. Chicken black bean dish the chicken was tough, overcooked and dry. Egg fried rice bland and pretty much boiled rice. Not normal and the rest of our food was amazing.

The positives - Ambience was great, waiters were attentive and polite, service was fast. They also indicated which dishes contains non halal ingredients so thats a plus point. Other than that, id say 80% of their menu items are halal. Not so positives - as a Malaysian, the food was subpar at best. We ordered hokkien prawn mee (broth quite watered down), nasi lemak (tasted like white rice but decent sides), nasi goreng (a bit plain but good fried chicken), char kuey teow (needed more seasoning). However, their roti canai was bomb dot com pls order that hehe. Overall id say the food could be improved further BUT i would say its a good exposure of malaysian food to non malaysians. Would i repeat? Yes! need their roti canais in my life 🤤

I have been too ill to complain or post this review in weeks due to visiting China Red. Sick for almost a month from food poisoning & E coli. Strongly recommend a visit if you have a spare 6 week dose of antibiotics.. Or if you are trying to loose weight rapidly.. Off work for 3 straight weeks…

Authentic Chinese food, busy, attentive staff and reasonably priced. The best dim sum restaurant I've been to in Scotland.
