Not much choice for a solo customer as the price and portions are for sharing customers so you end up having massive portions of quite expensive (but mediocre) food. I was in the area and popped in to see if they’ve changed….I’ve been coming here several times over the past decades but my verdict remains the same 😆

Authentic Food with great flavors and fair prices! The lamb skewers were great and with 2.x ¥ a pcs fairly priced, especially in London. Restaurant was busy throughout our visit and lot of Mandarin is spoken - always a good sign for authentic food 🤘

Kwabarou crazy dog ​​restaurant! This is the 2nd place in my list of restaurants in London.. I ate kewobaro, mapo tofu, and egg fried rice and it was so, so, so delicious..🩶

A pleasantly surprising traditional Chinese Northeastern dish, the portion sizes are very generous. Highly recommend the Guo Bao Rou (crispy sweet and sour pork), it's absolutely delicious. The most important thing is that they don’t charge any service fee!

I came here because I like to visit Gherkin each time when I am in London and it is the nearest Chinese restaurant here. I think the best word to describe the food here is that it is edible: nothing fancy, nothing to expect too much from. I have tried Guo BAO Rou, which is a typical dish from my hometoen, and to my surprise they did it in a very tricky way: you cannot say it is bad, but it is not traditional either way. In short, they used cooking style to cover the fact that it is not skillfully cooked. The seafood noodle is in big portion, and it is too salty, but beyond that I cannot say it is delicious. The northern salad is also a big portion, but the ingredients are not very well balanced. Anyway, if you are around and look forward to a big portion meal, you can come here, if you are a little bit picky, I would not recommend here. P.S., they do not accept credit cards that requires signature.

The pot-roasted mutton skewers are awesome! ! ! Absolutely absolutely absolutely! ! ! ! ! ! Everyone must come to the store and eat it while it’s hot! ! ! The clerk sister is also nice! ! ! The food is served very quickly! ! !

We ordered delivery last night. Dependable authentic Szechuan and Dongbei dishes. Big portions. Their Di San Xian (a non spicy Szechuan vegan dish of aubergine, green pepper and potato) is always excellent. It’s not the easiest dish to get consistently right as it involves deep frying the different vegetables separately before stir frying together in a subtly sweet and sour sauce. Their lamb with cumin is tasty. Hotter but not as tender as the version at The Sichuan on City Road. I often have the green beans with minced pork, ma po tofu, Dongbei twice cooked pork here, which are all good. I would recommend the skewers too. They also have some braised dishes on the menu. Stir fries are ubiquitous on Chinese restaurant menus because they are quick to prepare. Get a taste of Chinese home cooking with their stews and braises. The restaurant is popular and gets crowded requiring a wait for a table if you just walk in. They used to have another branch called Gourmet San on Bethnal Green Road where it was easier to get a table, which has unfortunately closed.

If you’re craving authentic Northeastern Chinese food in London, 老地方 is the place to go! Their Guo Bao Rou (sweet and sour pork) is an absolute must-try—crispy on the outside, perfectly balanced in flavour, and always a clean plate finish. The Di San Xian is a dream for veg lovers, with tender aubergine and crispy potatoes coated in a rich sauce. Portions are massive, ideal for sharing with friends, and everything tastes freshly made in their open kitchen. Two of us spent £80 for four dishes and had leftovers for the next day—great value for such hearty, nostalgic food!

The spicy pig's trotters are the best in the whole restaurant. The fried chili🌶️ and Sichuan peppercorns are paired with the crispy pig's trotters. It's very fragrant and not greasy at all. The sauce for the Guobao Pork is just right, sweet yet sour but not heavy. The skin is crispy and the meat is very tender. The portion of the spicy hotpot is huge and the spiciness we want is just right👅salty and spicy The soup of pickled cabbage and shredded pork stewed with wide noodles goes very well with rice. The chopped coriander in it is the finishing touch. My friend, who doesn’t eat coriander at all, can accept it and thinks it is delicious.

Poor service, waiting for a very long time, they really need more staff. I came here in 2023 and both the food and service were better. The only good part remaining is the fair price, prepare cash so you can get discounts.

Have been a couple of times, the sweet and sour meat dishes are top tier. The set menu wasn't quite as good with the duck a bit underwhelming. Would recommend sticking to your favourite dishes here.

Spacious Chinese restaurant serving authentic Szechuan meals. The beef stir-fry we ordered was delicious, but pity that seafood noodles were a bit overcooked. Still, this place comes with quick service (regardless of busy hours), wide menu selection and cozy Chinese-style interior.

I visited this place after reading reviews saying it was a great restaurant. I recommend it. In particular, the Kkoobarrow is without a doubt the best I’ve ever had!! And the mapo tofu was also very large and had a lot of pepper flavor (?!) so I think it was even more delicious!! I highly recommend trying the eggplant fries because they are not the fried eggplants full of batter that you get in Korea! We will stop by one last time before leaving for Korea!! I visited after seeing a review that it was such a good restaurant. I recommend it. Guobaorou in particular is the best I've ever eaten!! And I think Mapa Tofu was also more delicious because it had too much pepper flavor!! Super authentic cooking love the balance of spice used in crrtain dishes. Strongly recomened the Sweet and Sour Pork done the Szechen style.

There are two reliable (until they aren’t— because cooks move around) Szechuanese restaurants in Spitalfields area — this one (cheap and cheerful) and Szechuan Folk (more sophisticated and more expensive). Each has its place. My Old Place is very convenient if you need to catch a train at Liverpool Street Station.

A cost-effective Chinese restaurant I have been going to for 10 years. If you go when it's busy, the quality will drop, so I recommend going as soon as it opens. I highly recommend the dry fried sweet and sour pork, lamb skewers, and cold beef.

✋🏼You can stop restaurant hunting now. This is the most underrated spot in London. At time of writing it has ~3.5 stars, which is the sweet spot for a Chinese restaurant (if you haven’t heard of this, search ‘Chinese restaurant 3.5 star theory’. Whether you’re looking for your death row meal, your newborn’s first bites, or a workday lunchtime spot - you won’t regret choosing My Old Place. (Maybe not for a newborn, because all lifetime culinary experiences would never live up to this.) Don’t get me wrong, service is awful, they talk to you like your dad did when he helped with maths homework. And don’t complain because it’s not decorated with cute waving cats. You’re there for the food. You must get sharing specials - I’m talking the Szechuan Fish bowl, or large tofu in soup sharing bowl. (I ate pescatarian but the meat kebabs are popular too.) You can’t go wrong, just look at what the regulars on the table next to you have ordered and get the same. Serving sizes are huge - it’s affordable and they don’t shove service charges down your throat. The photos attached are NOT the sharing dishes. Please get the sharing dishes. Lots of veggie options, allergy friendly, not halal meat.

The service in this restaurant needs to improve. Prices are expensive for very mediocre quality food, mostly deep fried and greasy. The menu does not reflect the true price as it is hiked up when you get the bill. The lady waitress who works here needs to practice good hospitality skills and learn how to treat customers with warmth, a smile and friendly service. Better restaurants in the area, go elsewhere!

One of my favourite restaurants in london to which I have been over 38 times now. I recommend going in a group where this provides exceptional value for money. There are some amazing dishes such as the Drypot beef, lamb skwerers, spicy cucumber salad, and the long beans with minced pork is sublime. Also they do a lovely refreshing pint of Cobra. This is a no nonnsense place that has been around for decades.

It’s been only 6 months since I lived here. But this is the best chinese restaurant ever. The price is relatively cheap compared to other restaurant and the taste is really authentic. Ah, it’s just full of love, I like chinese food. I’ve known this 3 days ago. This is the best. Please try to pork dishes.

Went for Dinner, 6 x tiny spring rolls were £13, no vermicelli options unless in a pork soup. Shame as gluten free people would be able to have some sort of noodles, not just rice dishes. Quite prompt service, pleasant atmosphere, slightly near an housing estate block so not justified charging top dollar for location purposes and food we chose was not mind blowing. Lots of Chinese customers so I guess you have to know what to order to get top notch flavours.

Since 2008, I have been dinning in this place. There are up and downs, I see mixed reviews. Not sure what people are looking for when they come to this restaurant, for me the food is the only thing that matters when I come here. The dishes are not as good as 15 years ago but still the best compare to other Northwestern restaurants in London. Some of their popular dishes are still great, just don’t order random new dishes, they are pretty bad. The place has been newly decorated but still feels a bit worn out, the lighting could be a bite better. The place smell of mold, I am sure that’s something it can be easily fixed. There was a stupid woman / waitress everyone talks about, I have also experienced my self, she is a truly wast of space, I am glad I haven’t seen her today. I hope the owner can keep it up and make some simple improvements.

I don’t understand why this place has such a low rating. Maybe because Google reviews are dominated by white people? Anyway if you’re looking for a pukka Chinese place service amazing food at good prices then this is it. Don't let the other reviews put you off.

Well, well, well ... service sucks hard, takes forever to be able to order stuff. Food and price comparison suck as well... so my suggestion is, if you want only Asian cuisine, then go to Spitalfields market or Brick Lane. If you are hungry and it doesnt need to be Asian food then go to a nearby pub, like The Goodman's Field price value over the top.

Angry waitress still there from reading previous comments from others. Mum Asked for two glasses of water and got snared at. Really horrible service. Even her colleague was avoiding her. She really didn't want to be there. We were first in today. Sunday, after a walk around the market. Ordered the beef noodles and special Lo Mein and lamb and chicken skewers. Noodles were over boiled so mushy and flavours were bland and diluted. The lamb skewers were £2 each and bland. One chicken wing for £2 also. Not sure if they have changed chefs coz it tastes totally different from when I when there before. Will probably not go again and walk extra 5 mins to yeye's dumpling and noodles instead. Portion size was big but if the taste and quality is crap then why bother. Removing a star. 3/5

Definitely one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the City, go there for lunch quite often with colleagues. We love their food as all dishes are flavorful and come in very good portion as well. Plenty of space in the restaurant but they still tend to get really busy during lunch or dinner time.

Fui aquí a comer con mi pareja la semana pasada. Estaba deseando comer aquí y me pareció que el servicio era rápido y la decoración era bastante agradable. También estaba disfrutando de la comida hasta que de repente no estaba de acuerdo conmigo, y tuve una repentina carrera a su baño. Al día siguiente terminé en un goteo de bajas ya que no pude comer ni beber nada desde que comí allí. El Dr. que vi pensó que la comida puede haber sido cocinada en un aceite diferente al que yo era alérgico. Mi compañero también dijo que no se sentía 100% después, pero no tuvo la reacción que yo tuve. Definitivamente no lo estamos haciendo allí.

Traditional Chinese restaurant with big portions.we the lamb on skewers as starters, beef in black bean sauce, pork in sweet and source and egg fried rice. Great tasting and reasonable price for the portion sizes.

The woman with blue hair was unfriendly...the food was just so-so.

Excellent dining experience! Been the customer since 2016. The braised tofu in special sauce is a standout—perfectly cooked and packed with flavor. The service is quick and friendly, and the atmosphere usually inviting but gets quite busy during lunch time. Definitely a great spot for a satisfying meal. Highly recommend!

Was blown away by how good the food was

Will like to make a complaint about your security guard to your manager tomorrow for discrimination against height age race ethnicity and for talking down against me. I am 21 years old. If I cannot come into speak to a manger I will make a formal complaint against the company and sue you for the security guard if he does not apologise/get fired

Low key, relaxed atmosphere. The food was delicious and enormous portion. Just knocked off a star because limited vegetarian selection. There are some reviews saying the service isn’t great but that wasn’t my experience at all. Smiley and friendly!

Sufficient quantity, normal taste

De zaak is ingericht zoals in china véél licht en vooral ongezellig. Het restaurant stroomde vol met Aziaten. Had een won tan soepje vooraf. Daarna een kipgerecht met véél véél pepertjes. Dat zou niet zo heet zijn, en dat viel ook wel mee. Maar teveel is ook niet oke.

Authentic Sichuan cuisine, make sure you try some dishes that are not available at your local Chinese takeaway. I loved the Sichuan chicken, which is served cold, the beef skewers were also excellent.

The place has amazing atmosphere, it suddenly takes you from a back street of Brick Lane and teleports you somewhere in China. But it deserves 3/5 stars only because it is extremely expensive and the service is not on par with it. That being said, most of the dishes on the menu are tasty and they are as authentic as they can be. Still, they lack a bit of taste, some need more salt or a bit less spicy. But they are authentic and a lot better than the one in Chinatown. At the end of the day, I'd probably come back again (for 3rd time), but I wouldn't come as frequently as I would if they fix the overpriced dishes or improve the quality of the food.

Many Chinese restaurants are delicious, but they always feel a little uncomfortable after eating them. This is delicious, and I feel refreshed after eating it. Food should be clean and not overly processed or seasoned.

This is a pretty mixed place, the food is just a little bit disappointing compared to other spots in town (lamb and gizzard skewers no scratch on Silk Road for instance). Perhaps we ordered badly (we took the recommendation of the waiter inc. beef in chilli oil, chicken with Sichuan peppercorns and a green / long bean dish), but I'd say make the short walk up to Sichuan Folk which I think is great.

I’ve been coming here infrequently for about 12 years but hadn’t been for two years until the other day. This used to be great sichuanese food at a reasonable price. The service was never good but the food made up for it. I was so disappointed with it on my recent visit- bland, poor quality produce and with premium prices now. I’ll be searching out alternatives from now on. Such a shame- the menu is also shorter and the service hasn’t improved. It was such a gem a few years ago

Despite relatively low score, I still decided to give it go. 3 stars and no more – food arrived fast in big portion, I actually found the service being pretty good. However, the food quality/taste was poor and too expensive for what it is. You will get much better value elsewhere.

Overall, everything is delicious. It's delicious. Compared to the large space, there are few people working in the hall, so it takes time to take orders and pay, so I recommend coming with plenty of time.

When I first walked in to this restaurant, I feel like I was in China.. some rural area.. It is a very old traditional Chinese decoration restaurant . Food is average, not really amazing, generous big portion tho but it is very oily too. Service is okay, if you visit here, please don't expect you will welcome with smiling 😔 face . the restaurant is quite huge, sometime you need to raise hand to get attention or walk to the counter.

Came here last night to celebrate my friends birthday, I can confirm, It is the kind of restaurant suitable for large gatherings. The meal tasted good particularly the fermented potato, spicy chicken and black fungus and I ate until I was full but this morning I had an unsettled stomach which is rare because when I lived in Paris I ate many rotten vegetables so my stomach linning is strong. This is the main reason I would not return. I think what was fun about it was the location in an unsuspecting basement door and Staff are very friendly with good atmosphere but food was not outstanding and had a complicated after effect. Also the meal was very expensive, every one at my table spent £36. I would have liked to spend £15-£20. I would rate this restaurant a 6.5/10.

Food was nice but it’s bit oily. Service was super slow - ordered two portions of egg fried rice they only came when almost 80% of dishes were finished. Same happened to the tap water we asked for as soon as we sat down - they really need few more servers during peak hours.

The service at My Old Place in London is lightning-fast, giving a taste of efficiency akin to dining in Hong Kong. The food arrives promptly as well. Our group enjoyed every dish we ordered, though one member mentioned the Guobaorou (sweet and sour pork) used to be much better, but it was satisfactory for me. As a Berlin resident, I am envious that there is a Chinese restaurant in the middle of the city. I had very high expectations for the Kkoobarrow (it was originally much more delicious, but my companion who came often said it was a bit soggy that day), so I was very slightly disappointed, but the stir-fried Gongsimchae, mapo tofu, and stir-fried eggplant were really, really, really delicious! Above all, the servers worked so well and were so fast that I felt relieved. The draft beer was also delicious. I think I'll go again next time I go to London!!

I think it’s fair. Some of the dishes are good, some are below average. The sweet and sour pork is really nice, much better than other restaurants nearly. However fried rice is not that good, the taste is not rich enough and bit too oily…

Food portions are ok and some dishes, the quality is ok. One dish was very salty. Squid starter was good. Dishes are expensive for a non salubrious restaurant. But the service was poor. And then they have the audacity to charge 15% service. Will we visit again… probably not.

Modest chinese food frequented by local clients.

La comida está muy bien tanto en cantidad como calidad y precio. No obstante ten cuidado si pides un plato que ya mencionan que es picante, la camarera me dice que se le puede decir que pongan menos picante porque en mi caso creo que se han pasado un pelín. Recomendable. Los servicios están correctos. Hay que bajar unas escaleras, pero tiene barandilla.

Don’t miss out the sweet and sour pork. While the texture might subtly shift in softness or chewiness with each visit, the overall taste is consistently satisfying. Food was good, particular highlight was the prawn toast. Basic choice I know, but a good barometer of the rest of the food to come. Service is charmingly moody. Great little spot!

Pretty good food, but the service and atmosphere wasn't great. I don't expect great service from an authentic Asian restaurant (usually the meaner they are, the better the food). The atmosphere was the worst as it smelled like cleaning solution as soon as you walked into the restaurant. Food wise, we got plenty of dishes (if not too much) like the beef hot pot, the beef noodles, aubergines, and a 1/4 duck. I liked the noodles and aubergines, but the duck was too dry. The beef hot pot was tasty, but a bit too greasy.

We visited as a family and the food was very salty. I dare'nt complain as the service was so miserable and the waitress had such a bad attitude.

What a shame that this restaurant has gone downhill .... prices have gone up (£70 for a juice, 2 mains and 1 bowl of rice) and the food quality has gone down, small menu, very greasy and beef chewy. Used to go a lot but won't be going back again.

Something doesn't add up.... we had 3 dishes all at about 15 per dish plus 2 plain rices and 2 teas which is an extra 8 pounds should be 53??? You get 10% discount for paying cash but we were charged 68.20??? Even with a 12% service charge, it doesn't add up... No receipts and this is not the first review for miscalculation. Surely something dodgy is happening here?

The food was delicious, and the quality was mostly good. But the waitress had the worst attitude I’ve ever experienced from a restaurant server. She made many snarky, passive aggressive comments, and looked fed up like she didn’t want to be there at all. And the thing is — we did nothing to incite this behaviour! Her attitude was atrocious from the moment we stepped foot in this restaurant. I would have left a 4 or 5 star review if we had just had a nice enough waiter.

We booked a karaoke room. Service is excellent. All the food we have ordered are delicious, including preserved vegetables fish, aubergine with mince pork, salty fish chicken pot and dim sum. We enjoyed the food very much.

Attendance here is for the food so don't expect great service or atmosphere. That being said, food was absolutely fantastic and worth the visit.

Food was pretty decent, but on the greasy side. The service was quite bad, as the waitress had an attitude. We asked to split the bill between 4, and as we were in a rush we didn’t think too much about the charge. However after we left, we realized it was unreasonable to charge us £39 EACH for only 4 dishes and rice, even with a service charge of 15%. We rung them up and they admitted they had miscalculated the price, by a total of £77 extra!!! We were only supposed to pay £19.55 each between the 4 of us. We had to walk back to the restaurant to get the money back in cash. No idea if this was a mistake on the server’s part, but if we hadn’t caught it they would’ve gotten away with it. Should’ve asked them to refund the 15% service charge as well. Not a fan of how they run their business here. Be sure to double check the bill.

Mein Chinesischer Arbeitskollege hat mich hier ausgeführt - ein echt tolles Erlebnis! Das Essen ist in der Tat ausgezeichnet, lecker gewürzt mit ausreichend grossen Portionen und ist innerhalb von Minuten auf dem Tisch! Wer hier ein angenehmes Candlelight-Ambiente erwartet ist hingegen am falschen Ort: Das Interieur ist spartanisch gehalten, die Menuekarte ist abgenutzt und klebrig und es wird bei zunehmender Belegung immer lauter. Der Fokus liegt in der Tat auf das Essen! Wir haben grosszüging bestellt trotzdem waren wir erstaunt, dass die Rechnung zu zeit bei über GBP 100.- lag - kein Wunder - es wird automatisch ein "S/C" von 15% draufgeschlagen!

Tasty Chinese foods, lots of options, enough amount to share and a reasonable price. Worth to queue!!! I think there are no gluten-free options.

The food are tasty. Very authentic. The only thing is one of us feel uncomfortable afterwards. As one of the dish is very spicy and only him have that, we don't know is the dish or other reason.

Some of portions are really sizeable... But we felt too much salt or other taste makers (may not be good for overall heath vs taste)

The food is below average and not authentic at all! Especially the GUO BAO ROU is awful! Tofu was Chinese takeaway style but with £14 price tag Skewer was okay but £2 each Staff was quite nice! Ended up paying £43 for all this! Won't return!

If you like to be over-charged, chase for your order and cold dish, or shout to each other, this is your place. Worst experience throughout. Charged me 20% as service charge ??? Which I only found out when walked far away. They deserved only 0% and I should have asked to remove it. Understaffed, we got one dish that came without rice until it got cold we started to eat, and the rice only came when the dish was finished half way - it was even cold fried rice and not prepared fresh, and took them so long?? The second dish never came and had to chase again but we just didn't want to stay longer. Asked for water and never came, asked to change the table as we were right in front of the door with cold air, was ignored and they just gave the table to new customers, when there is downstairs they could have seated us there. Another table was not happy with their service and messed orders either. The seatings are all in one place so the noise and chatter were just too much, people have to shout to hear each other.

Really Chinese restaurant in London, you can find here quality food and plenty of dishes. I put 4 stars because it is a bit expensive compared to the other restaurants.
