A cost-effective Chinese restaurant I have been going to for 10 years. If you go when it's busy, the quality will drop, so I recommend going as soon as it opens. I highly recommend the dry fried sweet and sour pork, lamb skewers, and cold beef.

✋🏼You can stop restaurant hunting now. This is the most underrated spot in London. At time of writing it has ~3.5 stars, which is the sweet spot for a Chinese restaurant (if you haven’t heard of this, search ‘Chinese restaurant 3.5 star theory’. Whether you’re looking for your death row meal, your newborn’s first bites, or a workday lunchtime spot - you won’t regret choosing My Old Place. (Maybe not for a newborn, because all lifetime culinary experiences would never live up to this.) Don’t get me wrong, service is awful, they talk to you like your dad did when he helped with maths homework. And don’t complain because it’s not decorated with cute waving cats. You’re there for the food. You must get sharing specials - I’m talking the Szechuan Fish bowl, or large tofu in soup sharing bowl. (I ate pescatarian but the meat kebabs are popular too.) You can’t go wrong, just look at what the regulars on the table next to you have ordered and get the same. Serving sizes are huge - it’s affordable and they don’t shove service charges down your throat. The photos attached are NOT the sharing dishes. Please get the sharing dishes. Lots of veggie options, allergy friendly, not halal meat.

The service in this restaurant needs to improve. Prices are expensive for very mediocre quality food, mostly deep fried and greasy. The menu does not reflect the true price as it is hiked up when you get the bill. The lady waitress who works here needs to practice good hospitality skills and learn how to treat customers with warmth, a smile and friendly service. Better restaurants in the area, go elsewhere!

One of my favourite restaurants in london to which I have been over 38 times now. I recommend going in a group where this provides exceptional value for money. There are some amazing dishes such as the Drypot beef, lamb skwerers, spicy cucumber salad, and the long beans with minced pork is sublime. Also they do a lovely refreshing pint of Cobra. This is a no nonnsense place that has been around for decades.

Went for Dinner, 6 x tiny spring rolls were £13, no vermicelli options unless in a pork soup. Shame as gluten free people would be able to have some sort of noodles, not just rice dishes. Quite prompt service, pleasant atmosphere, slightly near an housing estate block so not justified charging top dollar for location purposes and food we chose was not mind blowing. Lots of Chinese customers so I guess you have to know what to order to get top notch flavours.

Since 2008, I have been dinning in this place. There are up and downs, I see mixed reviews. Not sure what people are looking for when they come to this restaurant, for me the food is the only thing that matters when I come here. The dishes are not as good as 15 years ago but still the best compare to other Northwestern restaurants in London. Some of their popular dishes are still great, just don’t order random new dishes, they are pretty bad. The place has been newly decorated but still feels a bit worn out, the lighting could be a bite better. The place smell of mold, I am sure that’s something it can be easily fixed. There was a stupid woman / waitress everyone talks about, I have also experienced my self, she is a truly wast of space, I am glad I haven’t seen her today. I hope the owner can keep it up and make some simple improvements.

Well, well, well ... service sucks hard, takes forever to be able to order stuff. Food and price comparison suck as well... so my suggestion is, if you want only Asian cuisine, then go to Spitalfields market or Brick Lane. If you are hungry and it doesnt need to be Asian food then go to a nearby pub, like The Goodman's Field price value over the top.

Large portions. Very tasty spicy food. Very busy with Chinese students and locals. Need to hire more staff. Recommend if you don't mind waiting. Authentic Sept 2024 update. Warning. It's true. Angry waitress still there from reading previous comments from others. Mum Asked for two glasses of water and got snared at. Really horrible service. Even her colleague was avoiding her. She really didn't want to be there. We were first in today. Sunday, after a walk around the market. Ordered the beef noodles and special Lo Mein and lamb and chicken skewers. Noodles were over boiled so mushy and flavours were bland and diluted. The lamb skewers were £2 each and bland. One chicken wing for £2 also. Not sure if they have changed chefs coz it tastes totally different from when I when there before. Will probably not go again and walk extra 5 mins to yeye's dumpling and noodles instead. Portion size was big but if the taste and quality is crap then why bother. Removing a star. 3/5

Went here for a meal with my partner last week. I was looking forward to eating here and found the service to be quick and the décor was quite nice. I was also enjoying the food until it suddenly disagreed with me, and I had a sudden dash to their loo. The next day I ended up on a drip in casualty as I was unable to eat or drink anything since having a meal there. The Dr that I saw thought that the food may have been cooked in a different oil to which I was allergic. My partner also said that he did not feel 100% after but he did not have the reaction that I did. We are definitely not doing back there.

The place has amazing atmosphere, it suddenly takes you from a back street of Brick Lane and teleports you somewhere in China. But it deserves 3/5 stars only because it is extremely expensive and the service is not on par with it. That being said, most of the dishes on the menu are tasty and they are as authentic as they can be. Still, they lack a bit of taste, some need more salt or a bit less spicy. But they are authentic and a lot better than the one in Chinatown. At the end of the day, I'd probably come back again (for 3rd time), but I wouldn't come as frequently as I would if they fix the overpriced dishes or improve the quality of the food.

Came here last night to celebrate my friends birthday, I can confirm, It is the kind of restaurant suitable for large gatherings. The meal tasted good particularly the fermented potato, spicy chicken and black fungus and I ate until I was full but this morning I had an unsettled stomach which is rare because when I lived in Paris I ate many rotten vegetables so my stomach linning is strong. This is the main reason I would not return. I think what was fun about it was the location in an unsuspecting basement door and Staff are very friendly with good atmosphere but food was not outstanding and had a complicated after effect. Also the meal was very expensive, every one at my table spent £36. I would have liked to spend £15-£20. I would rate this restaurant a 6.5/10.

The service at My Old Place in London is lightning-fast, giving a taste of efficiency akin to dining in Hong Kong. The food arrives promptly as well. Our group enjoyed every dish we ordered, though one member mentioned the Guobaorou (sweet and sour pork) used to be much better, but it was satisfactory for me. As a Berlin resident, I am envious that there is a Chinese restaurant in the middle of the city. I had very high expectations for the Kkoobarrow (it was originally much more delicious, but my companion who came often said it was a bit soggy that day), so I was very slightly disappointed, but the stir-fried Gongsimchae, mapo tofu, and stir-fried eggplant were really, really, really delicious! Above all, the servers worked so well and were so fast that I felt relieved. The draft beer was also delicious. I think I'll go again next time I go to London!!

Food was pretty decent, but on the greasy side. The service was quite bad, as the waitress had an attitude. We asked to split the bill between 4, and as we were in a rush we didn’t think too much about the charge. However after we left, we realized it was unreasonable to charge us £39 EACH for only 4 dishes and rice, even with a service charge of 15%. We rung them up and they admitted they had miscalculated the price, by a total of £77 extra!!! We were only supposed to pay £19.55 each between the 4 of us. We had to walk back to the restaurant to get the money back in cash. No idea if this was a mistake on the server’s part, but if we hadn’t caught it they would’ve gotten away with it. Should’ve asked them to refund the 15% service charge as well. Not a fan of how they run their business here. Be sure to double check the bill.

If you like to be over-charged, chase for your order and cold dish, or shout to each other, this is your place. Worst experience throughout. Charged me 20% as service charge ??? Which I only found out when walked far away. They deserved only 0% and I should have asked to remove it. Understaffed, we got one dish that came without rice until it got cold we started to eat, and the rice only came when the dish was finished half way - it was even cold fried rice and not prepared fresh, and took them so long?? The second dish never came and had to chase again but we just didn't want to stay longer. Asked for water and never came, asked to change the table as we were right in front of the door with cold air, was ignored and they just gave the table to new customers, when there is downstairs they could have seated us there. Another table was not happy with their service and messed orders either. The seatings are all in one place so the noise and chatter were just too much, people have to shout to hear each other.

Unfortunately has gone incredibly downhill since COVID. Chonqing style chicken, once one of their best dishes, now is dry and chewy with little flavour. Dan dan noodles used to be silky and delicious - now bland and tasteless and were a struggle to finish. Even the chili and sour sliced potato, once a mainstay, has gone way way downhill in terms of flavour. Stewed Aubergine was good, pork dumplings were good as usual. Service was always pretty mediocre, but now it feels outright aggressively bad. Waitress just stared at us unresponsively multiple times with great annoyance when we would order or request anything. I wouldn't care if the food was as good as it used to be, but when the food is bad it adds insult to injury. It really is a shame as it used to be fantastically tasty sichuan and northern chinese food, and that can be less common to find on the eastern side of the city.

The menu advertised Set A at £28.50 with multiple dishes (though it stated "minimum 2 persons"), and when we ordered, we even asked the server if £28.50 included all those dishes, to which she surprisingly said yes! When the server brought all the dishes to the table, we even jokingly mentioned that £28.50 seemed like too much to finish, and she just chuckled and said 'yes, it is.' However, when we checked the bill, it totaled £88.90. She explained that Set A at £28.50 was per head, and since there were two of us, we were charged twice. Of course, the bill also included two £4 drinks, totaling £8, and an £11.50 noodle dish. 3. Nevertheless, this ambiguous pricing approach seemed rather deceptive, and I would advise anyone dining here to clarify and double check the price and menu. The business practices seemed questionable.

I like the food, but the service was appalling and also they charge a "mandatory" 15% service charge for their appalling service. When I asked the staff, who was quite rude, if she could lower it (service in the UK is usually a discretionary 10% or 12.5%) she said no. We didn't even get tap water. Would not recommend.

Best authentic Chinese food that I have had in London. Very different from your corner Chinese takeaway. Very attentive to allergy information. Would thoroughly recommend

Authentic restaurant with authentic food and services. When I say authentic I mean authentic and don’t expect to have the nicest or the friendliest staff. Still highly recommended.

Food was somewhere between average and above-average. The spicy popcorn chicken was really good, but chicken with chilli oil was way too sweet, too much sugar clearly - also i also expected cucumber slices coming at the bottom of the chicken so was a bit surprised they didn’t have them. Lamb skewers were below average, the texture of the meat was too tough, but the seasoning was alright. 辣子雞很棒,不過口水雞太甜了。。。而且不帶黃瓜 有點失望 羊肉串兒的肉好難嚼喔,不過調味方面還可以的

I specially loved their Mapo Tofu with white rice.A dish that I can’t miss every time I visited this place! Also recommend their 锅包肉😋. Have to say it is authentic northern Chinese dish and they nailed it. Always my go-to place when I’m around the area if I crave for some comfort food.

Accidentally found a restaurant with a lot of Northeastern Chinese dishes, something I'm used to and something that's quite hard to find in London. Disanxian (aubergine, potato, sweet paper) is great.

We went there every once in a while and are happy it has been keeping up the good food taste and portion. And it the only place I can eat pig’s intestines:) It’s better than many chinese restaurants in London.

说实在的,做的口味一般,菜量可以,毕竟价格在那,环境就像中国国内二三线城市的小饭馆一样,对于支持中餐的人来说,也没啥太好的选择了

Extremely rude staff, horrible food taste, very unhygienic place, worst service ever!!! I saw the reviews and went to this restaurant. 1. Ordered 1 hot and sour soup which had overpowering taste of soy sauce and tomato ketchup. I tried 1 spoon and left it as is because taste was unbearable. 2. Ordered Beef in chili oil and rice, dish was as if someone poured the entire salt box in it. 3. I saw the kitchen staff tasting the ingredient directly with bottle touching their mouth and then pouring in the large vessel for preparing the food. I complained to the manager for the overpowering salt in my beef dish, he brought spoon and digged in the beef dish and told me it’s not salty. I said I find it very salty and then it’s impossible that he is not finding it salty. Manager said in a very rude tone that even if I am not able to eat more than a spoon, I have to pay the full amount. How can a restaurant manager really dig into a customer dish and say that customer is not right. Especially when customer complained as soon as the dish arrived. It’s extreme case of horrible customer service. They have either bought the ratings or the actual chef left and they are sitting on those ratings with their horrible customer service and rude behavior. Never ever ever go to this restaurant if you respect yourself, your money, taste buds and humanity in general. Owner is probably not aware of how rude these guys are and the horrible service or they are all same gang not bothered by the customer.

This is the sort of authentic Chinese dining experience I like. Not much catering to British preferences (although they do have duck pancakes) and service is not perfect. Our waitress spoke poor English but tried to be helpful. Food was very good. Out of three dishes the beef and prawns were superb - 10/10. Let down by the disappointing pork dish (can't remember what it was). At lunchtime it was full of Chinese City workers which tells us something. I'll be back

Some of the best authentic Chinese food in East London. Northern Chinese specialities, including chuan'r (skewered meat). Plus classic westernised Chinese food. All really really good. Reasonably priced for London.
