First time here - Nice venue, plenty of attentive staff but when the menu arrived - we looked for a second page and thought - is this it?? No starters, Mains were a few choices of basket meals (I thought they went out in the seventies) and a choice of burgers - what we had was ok but VERY disappointed with the limited menu.

Booked originally for a solo female traveller however added my mum. Whether your a solo or a couple / family you wont be disappointed. We were met at the door by a lovely polite cheerful lady.key cards were presented for each room. Very tasteful decorated through out, with both local and Scottish themes. We were in room 10, which is up a a few stairs. The rooms will not disapoint. Tea and coffee facilities on hand. Decorated slattered blinds covered yhe oginals sashed windows. Lights are controlled under foot to the bathroom. Very quiet during the whole of our stay, both within the hotel and locally. Breakfast was good with a great selection for gluten free. Staff very helpful

We booked as advised as it was very busy, but our table wasn't ready, We were given a different one which was very nice. It took just under a hour to get food and then one of our family didn't get there food Disappointment to say the least. Made more infuriating on blaming the new start. Don't order the French fries (black and oily) wish we could say that we would be back.

Another excellent time in the Murray Arms. Like many rural places they have done so well to keep going to such high standards during these difficult times. As regular guests here for dinner we appreciate their hard work and continuing efforts. We all look forward to eating here again soon. My wife and I were pleased to discover the business now providing food again after the Covid restrictions. A full menu is served from 5pm in pleasant surroundings. Staff were friendly and attentive, happy to suggest dishes which could be adapted for gluten-free preferences. We had dinner on Saturday and enjoyed it so much we booked again for the following night - the food was delicious with generous portions and very reasonable prices. On Sunday my wife had the roast beef “special” which was lovely. Comments from our fellow diners on both days were also very complimentary. The hotel also has a separate and comfortable bar lounge area to relax with a drink before or after your meal. We are looking forward to returning when we are next in town.

We only called in for a drink but we were welcomed and led through to the bar. The pleasant young man took our order and brought our drinks over and said that there was no rush to pay, so long as we did. We were later greeted by the owner, who stood and had a good chat with us. Fifty years in the business. We wish we had gone there for a meal, rather than where we went. It was tastefully decorated and the carpet was like walking on air, due to the excellent underlay. It was a nice end to an evening that had started out poorly.

This hotel used to be the place to go when I lived and worked in the area many years ago. On a short break in the town decided to try it for our first night . The service was good. Very polite and friendly - pretty knowledgable about the menu. The menu was fairly limited though .. I struggled to find something to order which was a shame. When the food arrived it was ok but I’m not sure I’d recommend the place and definitely there’s better in the town. That said if the menu had a refresh and the decor improvements are completed this place has the bones of being very good. Thank you

The food was really very good, service great and there was a nice atmosphere in the restaurant. We were drawn by the Sunday roast deal but by evening this had proved very popular and no longer available. The chef did though prepare pork for the lovely Julia and I chose the steak and ale pie. Both were very good and the food was of restaurant standard. We had shared a haggis dish with mustard mayonnaise sauce which was delicious and ended with a chocolate and walnut parfait that was heavenly. Mrs Redgate had twice her daily allowance of a very nice merlot, one of the wines available by the glass. I enjoyed the Bellhaven best bitter which I was very pleasantly surprised by, wonderfully fresh and delicious (it’s owned by Greene King apparently and reminiscent of some of their beers). I had another one therefore and it went very well with the pie. Mains were around £12 and starters and finishers £5.95 but well worth it and with a very good menu selection. Our waitress was great, very friendly and professional. Very enjoyable evening and excellent for what we were looking for.

We visited the Murray Arms hotel for Sunday Lunch today at 12.30pm and we will not be going back. The food was ok, but the service was terrible. After being shown a table, we waited 25 minutes for a menu (We did nearly walk out) and to order some drinks. The restaurant was not busy either. After another 15 minutes we got our drinks and finally ordered 4 Sunday roast dinners. After being in the restaurant for over an hour we got our meals (roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, roasted new potatoes, carrots and green beans) This was ok, but nothing special and should not of taken all that time to arrive. When we finished our meals, again it took a while for the plates to be cleared and our pudding to arrive, which was close to 2pm when it did. Overall very poor service, other tables were arriving after us and getting served quicker and getting their food before us too!! Would not recommend this place.

Family meal out very and very disappointed. The worst steaks I’ve ever been served in my life. In a beef producing area with excellent butchers this is inexcusable. The smoked salmon ( same observation as for the steak) had tasted as if it had been frozen and thawed. We visited the Murray Arms for an evening meal on a Thursday evening. The restaurant area has had a mini makeover, which is nice, but unfortunately is let down by a lack of atmosphere (no background music and you can hear a pin drop) Our waitress was very quiet and didn't really engage which for a restaurant was a bit odd. This was a shame as the food was very nice. They weren't particularly busy but the service was slow. Went for an early dinner with the kids and the restaurant was empty. Ordered kids pizza (burned), Fajitas (ok), kids fish and chips (ok) and the Murray burger (inedible). Our main complaint was the burger - straight from the freezer and evidently a cheap brand. The burger and fish came with oven chips which were dry as a bone. We did complain and the waiting staff were nice about it, but taking off the cost of a kid's main (4.95) doesn't really cut the mustard. Save yourself the indigestion and go to the Galloway Lodge down the road - much better!

On holiday in the area so called in for an early tea with my husband, daughter, son in law and their two young sons ( 2 and 1 year old) food was very mediocre. I oldered scampi from the light bite menu the chips were dry and looked like some had been refried as they were much browner then others in the little basket they came in the garden peas has obviously been microwaved and were shrivelled up. My husband daughter and son in law all ordered the same meal - steak pie which they all said was dry. The children's meal seemed ok but I don't think you can really get a bowl of soup and pasta wrong! We had to ask for cutlery for the boys and the drinks came without ice so at a cost of over £70 all in all it was pretty disappointing and over priced for the quality.

We came here for easter lunch and it was TERRIBLE !!!!!!!!! We were a party of 15 who eat out frequently in the area, ages from 10 to 80+ years.I ordered deep fried brie for starters which was OK but it only went down hill from there! All the people in our group who ordered the other choices of prawn cocktail and soup did not enjoy it and said the food was poor quality, the prawn cocktail was watery and the soup tasteless. The mains came and it was so bad it was funny, I am pretty sure the so called 'chef' had shares in frozen food. My chips tasted like microwave chips and the goujons not as good as my usual frozen home ones, the people in our group who had fish said it was frozen, all the scampi was frozen and my great uncle was served a measly 7 pieces of scampi when the menu specified it would be 10, he was given an extra bowl of more... Frozen scampi ! My mum ordered the steak pie which came with chips (remember those!) Instead of mash as it specified on the menu, the waiter said she would replace it with mash to which my mum replied but then the pie would get cold, the waiter said they could reheated but my mum said she didn't want it to be heated up again !! My uncle had beef served with a rock hard slab of Yorkshire which was a bit like charcoal but 'not as tasty' . after finishing our meals out of the freezer we actually said cold McDonalds would've been better and none of us fancied a dessert, it would only have been frozen! There was also an ensuite dining shower facility AKA a leak in the ceiling through the light fitting, when the owner saw that I almost got wet all he could do was moan that they'd ' just been quoted 25,000 pounds to fix it !' I didn't even know what to say. NEVER GO THERE! Unless of course you fancy a lunch of poor quality frozen food with a side order of miserable staff and a leak in the ceiling.

This was the worst meal we have all ever had!In short food preheated frozen food (badly), roof leaking and unfriendly and unhelpful staff will never go back. A disgrace and ashamed that this is what is considered acceptable to serve! Let's down Scotland. In detail:-15 in party when we arrived they stated that we had to stick to a restricted menu as the chef could not cope with full menus if party was over 8 people. We were never told this when we booked for Easter Sunday lunch. Choice of 3 starters- soup, fried Brie and prawn cocktail - brie frozen rubbish, prawns also frozen and soggy rubbish. Then the main course- really awful. All was out of freezer very badly. The fish and chips at £11, peas cold, chips soggy and luke warm cheap and frozen - captain Birdseye could have done better. Others had scampi said 10 pieces on menu 7 arrived we complained and then got more frozen tiny awful cheap rubbish. No one liked food, we complained and the owner replied that they were getting a new chef! No offer of money off or apologies. Now the food was bad but also take an umbrella roof was leaking through the downlights which were switched on - water on the floor no bucket and definitely a health and safety issue with wet floor and water in electrics. Anyone could have slipped on the floor. The owner said they had got a quote to fix the roof and was £25k and this is why it was not done ! This is not the Clients issue and the public should not be allowed in the area.We did not have puddings of coffee could not stand it anymore.Avoid at all costs!

My son and I decided late in the day to have dinner, unable to get a table in nearby Masonic, so popped into the Murray. Entered restaurant but no staff to be seen. Eventually got some attention from somebody and we sat in a lovely spot that had been recently refurbished. We placed our order and waited, we chatted a while and suddenly realised that after 30 minutes, still no food.No apologies for long wait from staff, but food eventually arrived. Roast beef for me and burger for my son. I then looked at plate to find the flattest Yorkshire pudding ever. My food was good apart from that, but the burger was tough, a bit tasteless, under cooked bacon and a very small amount of cheese, which both were extra. The salad was small and the coldslaw appeared watery. The staff during our meal were absent a lot of the time. I got the bill but had to go to reception to pay it by card.No staff asked me at any time, if everything was alright, so no tip and won't be returning soon. I gave it 3 stars, as it was really between 2-3 stars. Shame, going by other reviews it must pull it's act together sometimes.

I haven't reviewed a restaurant on TripAdvisor for around 2 years but felt this place was so bad I had to.We were greeted by a voice from around the bar shouting "just take a seat", we then got our own menus. We were never offered a highchair for our 2 year son and when our drinks arrived the syrup had ran out on the post mix juice, so the cola was light brown in colour and tasteless. When we advised the waitress, she didn't even apologise just replaced them with poured cans. The menu choices were very limited, out of the 5 starters, 3 of the were fish/seafood, 1 was soup and the other was brie. We ordered no starters, just 1 steak pie, 1 burger and 1 kids macaroni. The burger was poor quality meat, very greasy, i have had better from snack vans at the roadside. The bun was stale and the chips were cheap catering chips that you would find in a works canteen. In this day and age people expect much better from a restaurant. My wife's steak pie was tasteless and the meat was tough, the same comments were overheard from the table next to us. My sons macaroni was also lacking taste but was, to be fair, the best meal served today. The service was appalling from the waitress and we didn't think people got away with this level of service anymore but we were wrong. NO offer of a high chair, NO offer of sauces/vinegar, NO check backs re the meals, NO offer of 2nd drinks, NO interaction with us and therefore NO tip.Poor food, worse service - the only good thing was the owner or manager bringing our son a colouring page and crayons during the 28 minute wait for our poor lunch, with only 2 tables in with straight checks no starters. Then she wasn't to be seen again. We are regulars in the area for family holidays and certainly WILL NOT BE BACK.

The inside of the Murray Arms was a pleasant surprise. We hadn't been to the area for a while and the refurbishment of the restaurant was a lovely surprise. The staff are friendly and attentive. The food was nicely presented and of good quality. Definitely worth a try

We were staying overnight in the area and this was recommended to us for dinner. It more than lived up to the recommendation. Good range of dishes to choose from on the menu and very reasonable prices given the quality of food served. Service was quick and friendly but most of all the food was delicious.

Ate in this restaurant recently whilst visiting the area. The food was really not up to scratch and can only be described as bland - no seasoning at all. The lentil soup was flooded with salt though. Not keen on salty food but there was nothing in the Haddock Mornay and was quite unpalatable. Pity as the bistro is pleasant and is in a lovely setting.

This place has equally good and bad points. The restaurant is nicely decorated but had very little atmosphere. To be fair we were eating early at 6pm which meant that the restaurant was largely empty but this gave the room an awkward feel. The gentleman that served us was very friendly and the food was served quickly.I had brie to start which was very nice and well presented . My husband opted for soup which he found to be very salty. For mains my husband had fish and chips which was a good sized portion and he really enjoyed it. I ordered chicken stroganoff which was tasty itself but the accompanying vegetables weren't the best. What I found bad manners was that a couple came in after us and asked to sit by the window. The gentleman that served us was just about to let them sit down when a lady came in and said they couldn't sit there because that was the place of one of their regulars. The couple sat elsewhere. Ten minutes later another couple came in and asked to sit at the same table by the window and the female waitress said that they could, and then commented that their regular visitor could sit on the next table along when he arrived.I think if I had been the first couple, I would have walked out at that point. I find it bad manners to treat guests differently in this manner. Not the best way to encourage people to come back!

This is the first time we have eaten here since the restaurant has been revamped, the Bistro is extremely stylish , we visited on a Tuesday Lunchtime an hour before service ended, we were the only customers initially the waitress didn't seem too pleased to serve us, however once we engaged in some banter about the refit she became much more friendly and chatty. The food was very good The fish and chips was excellent and well priced, the menu choice was varied including several fish dishes and a vegetarian option. We usually eat at the Masonic Arms next door but would now happily choose the Murray Arms instead.

Out on a cycle rdie from Kirkcudbright we spotted the sign and it tempted us in - we just had coffee and carrot cake which was very nice. Strangely although it was a Sunday lunchtime in the holiday season there were only 4 other people in there having their lunch. We were surpised as it is very nicely done out - modern but retaining some of the traditional scottish feel - so it seemed a shame to be so empty

The musty smell at the entrance was possibly expected given the historic age of the hotel but surprising when compared to the modern look of the bistro just to it’s left which we’d seen from the street. Once seated in the bistro it was fine.We ordered a bottle of wine and for starters I had the Brie in batter with onion relish and salad garnish (£5.50) whilst my wife had Haggis Bites, again in batter with a raspberry dip and salad garnish (£5.50). Both were fairly standard fare.Next up for mains I had the Poached Solway Salmon which was served with a lemon & herb butter, potatoes, vegetables and salad garnish (£11.50) and my wife had Seabass fillet with a tomato, olive & herb sauce, potatoes and vegetables (£12.95). These were delivered without cutlery and when we requested some we’ve no idea where the waitress went - she possibly didn’t understand English but we’ll never know as she didn’t return. The waiter eventually came to the rescue as we were about to help ourselves from a neighbouring table. The salmon was ok but, as was the case with both dishes, the vegetables had been overcooked and were tasteless. The Seabass was dry and the sauce, plumped on top, did not appeal at all so my wife left most of the food. When collecting the plates no check was made on satisfaction with the meal when clearly one had barely been touched and the other still had a pile of vegetables left. Some time passed after we finished our wine before we were approached to see if we wished dessert however based on our experience with the mains dishes we were not at all tempted.Another member of staff who took payment enquired if we’d enjoyed the meal and only apologised without further enquiry when we said we hadn’t.The food was £35, the wine £19 - at least we enjoyed the latter.

The only good service was from the older guy who took our initial drinks order. The two waitresses who then took over need training! One was soooo miserable, not someone that you would put 'front of house'! Neither asked if the food was OK. The service was the minimum they could get away with. When the waitress cleared our plates, she just said 'do you want desert?' Didn't ask whether we'd finished, or whether everything was OK.Food was OK. A couple of us had steak, it was a bit fatty thought and the juices where all over the plate. Had to soak them up with a napkin to stop the rest of they food becoming soggy! They must be happy not to benefit from repeat custom. We wouldn't visit again.

We thought the staff were very welcoming and accommodating. We had four very tired and hungry children with us and they took our order early even though they hadn't started serving food yet. Portion sizes were generous - especially for kids. The lovely lady who served us couldn't have been more helpful. I really liked the modern and very clean decor. Would return.

Although the food was OK, the waiting time was tedious - an hour before we got the first starter, then strung out for each person in our 8 person group. Would not return.

The meals were really lovely as I'm vegetarian. I was delighted with a high standard. Usually vegetarian meals are basic, but they did a lovely vegetable fajita with a delicious sauce. I would recommend that. Also the staff were very friendly and helpful.

The steak tasted boiled not fried and the onions were sparse and undercooked. This was not a good steak baguette. Nice service though in good surroundings.

Amazing location just to the side of the A75 near Castle Douglas. Perfect spot to take a breath, enjoy the view and also the good coffee and flapjack that they serve. A great little find.

Excellent service with you ordering everything from your table which is very convenient. Good choice of food although children’s menu could be better and there were no pizzas which dissapointed our youngest grandchild. We all enjoyed what we ordered and look forward to calling again soon.

It's always a pleasant surprise to find a pub with a good menu using local ingredients! We ate well, the service was friendly. The pub has a large garden. This must be one of the best pubs for miles in any direction! My wife left her sunglasses behind, but Tim, the landlord, was super-helpful, finding them and posting them on. We will definitely go there again.
