Murphys Fish Bar in North Somerset

Saturday 6pm. Pretty quiet on arrival, a few customers waiting for orders sitting in the chairs. I was the only customer waiting to order, ABSOLUTELY no acknowledgment from the 2 staff of my presence at the counter. Nothing ready to serve in the display cabinets apart from a few sausages, understandably as food is freshly cooked, on the other hand if there were plenty of customers the food could be readily available on arrival within reason certainly for the earlier part of opening hours. Chips are usually perfect, batter is soggy. Spent a fortune feeding staff from here in the past over the years. So I went to Oldfields in Congresbury and spent £75, cabinets full of excellent food ready to go, a queue of customers, staff are pleased to see you, good old fashioned family business. Won’t be going back.

Paid £16 for large cod and chips the fish was a decent size with good taste but very stingy with the chips was still hungry afterwards

Had to wait 25minutes as they were so busy (presumably tantamount to their popularity) but worth the wait. Fish was very well cooked with a light batter. Chips very nice too. Service very good and comfortable chairs while you wait.

Previously have had some fairly good fish and chips from here. The past two orders have been awful and we will be looking elsewhere for a new chippy takeaway. The salad in the burgers has been brown and mouldy and the chips have been stale and hard. Shame as previously rated this place.

I pulled-in at Murphy’s on the recommendation of a very “particular” friend, on my way home from a long, busy day. Parking was easy round the back. Although the place is a little untidy inside, there was no smell of stale oil. There was a happy, hard-working bunch of youngsters behind the counter. I ordered haddock, chips and mushy peas. I ate in as I didn’t want to stink my car out. The batter was light and fresh, with the haddock perfectly cooked, beneath. The chips were perfect, not over-cooked, fresh and tasted of potato. The chef asked how it was while I was eating, which was a nice touch and showed that he cared. I’ve tried a few chippies in my time (Braunton, Chew Stoke, Bembridge etc) all claiming to be the best in the country and award winning etc., but this was the best I’ve had in a long time. I shall be back soon. Highly recommended.

Stumbled across this chippy whilst visiting the area. There was a long wait for the food, and when it arrived the chips were fairly tasteless, hardly any salt and vinegar and undercooked in my opinion. The gravy was disgusting, it was so thin it had a watery texture and made the chips taste even worse, so I threw it away after a couple of dips. The only decent part of the meal was the battered sausage which i enjoyed, but the chips were so bland i ended up eating only half of them. My wife and son said their food was mediocre and nothing like our local chippy. Needless to say we won't be visiting again when next in the area.

Absolutely disgraceful. Bought 2 x fish and chips, 1 piece of battered fish and 2 x battered sausages and a curry sauce. All pieces of fish and sausages had hardly any batter.the whole point of battered fish and battered sausages is for the batter. The curry sauce wasn't even in the bag. The worst con the worst fish and chips in the south west. £26 for crap. Avoid and sadly they didn't even answer the phone when I wanted ti bring this to their attention. appauling

My husband had fish and chips from Murphy’s last week and raved about them so on returning from a weekend away to an empty fridge, we thought we would try it again. This evenings offering was not something to rave about!! The batter was chewy and greasy and the fish did not seem fresh and flakey as it had been last week. The curry sauce was gloopy and lumpy with very little taste.

Good chippy, with decent size portions, parking along side behind house, staff always helpfull, but beware can be very busy, as all good places are. shuts a bit early for us as we pass around 9 ish a lot of times..but we understand .

Visited Murphys for the first time and it will be the last. The haddock and chips were awful. The batter on the fish was really over cooked and very greasy. 🤢 I am not sure what they do with the vinegar but that also tasted very odd. 🤮 In my opinion, avoid.

We visited Murphys fish bar on Monday evening at 18:50. I placed my order of 2 cod and chips with curry sauce, after payment I was told the wait would be 30 minutes. We were not familiar with the area so we stayed and waited, there were others waiting also that were getting frustrated with the waiting time. One of the young lads working said to who I can only imagine was in charge "should we not serve all the people waiting for food first" to which the person in charge said "no we honer all delivery orders first". Absolutely shocking as the food I ordered was already cooked and could have sent me on my way. 40 minutes had gone by and I asked how much longer before my order was ready. Another person said sorry for the delay and bagged up food that had been sat the whole time I was there. Definitely not worth the wait the chips were horrible, half were hard and the other OK. Curry sauce was extremely thick like paste and luke warm, the only good thing was the fish but not worth waiting for. Customer service was shocking. Avoid and find somewhere else!!!!!!

I ordered food for a large group of approximately 12 people. Murphy’s were very helpful on the phone and even agreed to have the food ready for a little earlier than their regular opening time. I ordered a large selection of food, including pizza and pie along with the usual fish and chips. As I requested, the food was marked with names and was piping hot and delicious! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Full marks to Murphy’s. We’ll be using you again!

Came in the chip shop today the staff was excellent as always and very friendly. The food was very nice and the chips and fish cooked fresh to a high standard will be definitely stopping in again

We popped in for fish and chips and scampi and chips after flying into Bristol Airport after a recent holiday. We ate in and had a really good meal, very nice chips fish and scampi.

Ok so the food here is very nice, i'll give them that. As i mentioned in my previous review, the fish and chips are very good. I've since had pie and chips and the pie was microwaved so it was very soggy, this was very crap to be honest. Also the chicken strips appear to have changed and are now some weird supermarket bought ones? But the real reason for the 2nd review is something that annoyed me and baffled me in equal measure, And is something a previous reviewer mentioned. The ordering, queuing and cooking process is beyond stupid... So you order your food, get a ticket and wait for your food. Seems very simple right? Wrong! The food is cooked on a per ticket basis! So if you have 15 people in there, which is very possible and normal at busy times, then instead of looking at the orders and seeing that they need 14 chips, 4 battered sausage and 5 cod, they instead cook on a per ticket basis! So if you ordered chips and there are 6 people in front of you then guess what! That's right you're waiting until those 6 have been cooked, served and departed before your chips get done. Absolute MADNESS! So you can be waiting 15 mins for a portion of chips, or as i was waiting for pie and chips. I could see the pie in the warmer on the counter and them cooking chips, so in theory i could have been out of there in 5 mins or less, more like 30 seconds really! But no, i had to wait for about 25 mins as there were a boat load of people that had ordered before me. I sat there then entire looking at the very pie i was later to be served! It was very chaotic to be honest and no one really looked like they knew what they were doing. But hey ho, people got their orders and the food tastes good. So what do i know really?! The guy that runs it seems very nice and he employs a lot of young college age people that are very well meaning and polite. But they are of an age where they're lacking a bit of confidence and are just doing as they're told, and rightly so i guess, they don't own the shop and are being paid to do a job. But its frustrating as they don't have a lot of common sense, not their fault, they're just young and probably in their first job. I don't hold that against them, we were all that age once and i knew 2 thirds of bugger all at their age! But the owner should have a bit more of a system going if he's going to be the 'leader' in there. But having said all of this and i sound like I'm being really negative and down on the place. I'm genuinely not, it's just this level of silliness and inefficiency drives me bonkers! It's always busy and most people just seem to accept this silliness with a bit of an exasperated smile on their face. In conclusion, food is lovely and worth waiting for if you're having cod and chips, but bring a news paper to read and just accept there's a bit of madness happening behind the counter!

Massive portions, even the small bag of chips. Tasty cod roe too. And a very cheerful welcoming team.

Popped in as was camping locally, the portions were huge, the food was hot, fresh and tasty. Perfect tea for us whilst it was chucking it down.

Both had cod and chips towards the end of Friday service. Fish portions are large for what you pay and chips okay. Whilst the meal was nice and good value, the chips were greasier than we are used to in London,

I just loved to the area and decided to pay this place a visit.The food is a very nice and it's reasonably priced, everything is cooked fresh. So far I've had cod and chips, which was delicious.and some chicken strips and chips. The strips were lovely and fresh and the chips cooked properly.If you're passing or fancy some grwat fish and chips then this is the place.As others have said you do wait for about 5 to 10 mins if you order fish or something they don't have waiting to go. But it's worth it. Everything is piping hot and completely fresh. We'll worth it in my opinion. If you can't wait for 5mins for a bit of fish then maybe go to McDonald's.

One of the best chippies in the area.Yes you have to wait 5-10 minutes for your food to be cooked, but the wait is worth it! Hot crispy fresh food, will definitely be back for more.If you can't wait a few minutes for better quality, get some cold greasy rubbish from elsewhere.

I do not expect to wait 25 minutes for a regular cod and chips. I spoke to a fellow customer who had phoned in his order two hours in advance. He still had to wait for ages. The staff appear to be young university students with no supervision.

The staff cook to order. 8 people waiting in the fish bar. It took 20 mins for them to cook & process my order which was one bag of chips.Two people complained about how long they had to wait. Another customer demanded his money back, he was angry said he wasn't waiting for 15 mins for chips.Staff chatting & not realising they have a line of customers. They made this guy wait for his refund!!Wont be bothering to go here again.Staff have no idea how to move the order line forward. Planning the cooking process to order & not adding how many portions they needed in front of them. Ridiculous

I have passed here many times on the way back from holiday, mostly late at night so it wasn't open but heard good things abouth this place. Well this time i was in luck we had early flight in and Murphys was open so i stopped and got some food all i can say is that it was great all freshly cooked while you waited, really good choice and reasonable prices. I would certainly recomend it.

Passed it many times, called in last night, cooked to order. sat on leather settee to wait. comfortable or what....Superb quality, friendly. Deffo recommend...

This is the best chip shop we have ever had!! Everything is made to order, very tasty and very reasonable prices! They also have comfy sofas where you can sit to wait for your food.. There are also stools if you wish to eat your food inside. The staff were also friendly and chatty too! Highly recommend!!

Traditional takeaway fish & chips - usually short wait but always fresh and good quality. Visit every few months for a treat - definitely recommend.

We come here a lot. You have to wait sometimes, but that is because the food is freshly cooked. The Cod is lovely and they serve an excellent chicken wrap. The staff are great, really friendly. Highly recommended.

Not sure what happens sometimes, you get a good meal then a not so good meal a shame really as it always used to be spot on!

This was the best Cod and chips that we have had in years. The fish was thick and succulent and the batter very crisp and not greasy. The chips were not greasy and stayed crisp and freshly cooked for each customer. We would thoughly recommend this place

Haven’t used them for a while but thought we would give them a try on our way home..my order was taken at 5.56pm my order was ready at 6.30pm. Can’t believe it takes 34 minutes to cook a piece of fish, 1 sausage and a portion of chips. There were 3 young people behind the counter, and all 3 were working painfully slow, the young girl who put my order up seemed to be there as a social event with the 2 lads. Surely at this prime time for fish and chips a more mature person should be there to oversee the service etc. And just to top it all the sausage was very nice but the chips were cold. Won’t be going there again

Pleasant little place, small small carpark easy to miss. Fish prepared fresh sadly not the same for the chips which were dried. Nice polite staff made up for the chips though.

Have popped in to Murphy's a few times over the past 12 months and have usually been impressed by the food there. Service is a bit slow sometimes due to the queue of regulars getting their meals I suppose, but otherwise this is a place worth stopping at. Decent car park and good location.

Stopped in for fuel before going to the airport. Food all freshly cooked, friendly staff and a good price! Worth a visit.

On my first visit ordered basic sausage and chips and was forgotten about for nearly an hour. Money was re-imbursed but sadly didn't help the fact the cold Chinese that was waiting in the car. Decided to get some chips on a Sunday at 7.40 pm to find they had just run out of chips and closed the shop leaving me and two other customers rather bemused that this could happen so early. Really needs sorting out as only had one normal experience there and this really isn't good enough

Popped in yesterday having been before. Unengaged staff and slow. Food was fine. What a shame as it could have been a 4 or 5 star review otherwise.

Went there last week (2nd time ever). Staff friendly. The chips were the best portion I have had for years.

Decidimos llamar a Murphy's para un rápido té esta noche en el camino a casa desde el trabajo, mi pedido fue tomado, billete recibido (tiempo que 17. 34) y que se normalizaron a esperar ya que sé que su comida recién hecha, sí tenían otros clientes antes que yo, y al menos otros 4 después de todo me colocando órdenes. A su debido tiempo los números de billetes fueron llamados y todo el mundo en la tienda era sirve excepto yo. Fui a la barra sólo se me preguntó si quería a la orden? Me dijo que no había estado esperando las edades, y repetido, no era sólo una disculpa, el formulario que sirve las mujeres solo gruñido diciendo todo el mundo venía juntos. Así que, ¿por qué todas las demás órdenes preparado de antemano la mía,? Al final a la izquierda de la tienda a las 6. 10, realmente no tome 30 minutos para cocinar 5 palitos de mozzarella. Una entrada sencilla que habíamos perdido y una disculpa habría sido aceptable, pero su actitud fue la autocomplacencia, que es lo que me llevo a escribir esta crítica. Si tienes prisa no elegir Murphy's.

Llamamos a Murphys en nuestro camino a casa de Bristol y estamos contentos de haberlo hecho. Pedimos pescado y patatas fritas, que estaban recién cocinada. Tienes sillas cómodas para sentarse mientras se espera. El pescado estaba perfecto como era nuestro patatas, ten en cuenta que es muy grande. Sin duda llamar de nuevo.

A un corto trayecto en coche desde donde estábamos basado en el complejo spa bosques y vale la pena cheddar el drive.

He ido a Murphys quizás cinco veces en dos años. Durante ese tiempo han sido siempre agradable, rápido y sabroso. Puedes sentarte y comer en lujosos sofás que parecen intentar comer. El aparcamiento parece pequeño, pero nunca he tenido problemas para encontrar un lugar.

Probablemente sólo nos visite este bar de pescado 3 o 4 veces al año cuando regreso del baño o Bristol, pero cada vez la calidad ha sido siempre el mismo nivel de calidad, recomiendo encarecidamente

Great value fresh chips lovely mushy peas and great fish cake, I enjoyed it all and was just how I remembered it when I worked in the area, also a great stop off for Bristol airport.

We ate in murphys fish bar while staying in lyncomb lodge hotel and it was ok. The fish was slightly overcooked but the chips were nice and they served drink so it was ok. I might eat therw again but i wouldnt jump at the chance

Stopped here as it was the first chip shop I came across heading south from Bristol airport. What a find it turned out to be!Cod, haddock, Pollock, and hake all available. The regular size cod & haddock was bigger than most shops serve, and the large and jumbo sizes looked like a real challenge. The fish itself was fresh and flaky and very tasty, and neither the fish nor the chips were at all greasy.I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone with a big appetite!

I Regularly drive through Churchill to and from Bristol Airport, and if its Fish & Chips i want !! Well It has to be Murphys Fish Bar. The fish & Chips are always cooked fresh. The size of the portions are really big, and the Quality is so good, every time. Never had a bad piece of Fish & Chips there. my only complaint is that they don't have sit down Restaurant. ! Its Not really a complaint but a comment. Mind you if they did they wouldn't be able to cope with the amount of Customers they would have

Live just a short walk away and visit at least a few times a month. Food always cooked fresh so sometimes you may have to wait a while...but well worth the wait.

Fresh food, cooked to order, fish, chicken, burgers, sausages, all good quality. Excellent chips, really tasty. But, very popular, so be prepared to wait.

This our local chippy.It's not the cheapest, but the food quality is excellent, and the portions are big. Staff are always friendly and helpful, and the place is always clean. We've eaten from here countless times over the last for years and have not had a bad meal yet. Highly recommended!!

Visited with a scout group for a evening takeaway. We had 20 meals . Fish and chips. Pies.nuggets.sausages and a burger everyone cooked to perfection. Helpful staff. Quality value for money food.
