We went for afternoon tea The food was delicious However when we arrived there was no one in reception We waited for five minutes then found our own way to the garden room We had booked this around 2 /3weeks ago only to be told we were not on there list However we thankfully were seated This was a present from our son and daughter in-law They got married here 2 years ago We found the venue itself very tired and run down It all needs a bit more of a sparkle Hubby went to the toilet There was no toilet paper Good job he didn't need any The pavement to the main door is very uneven I know there is a sign saying this But this needs updating asp Overall needs money spent on it The grounds look nice

Had a really delicious and lovely DAIRY FREE afternoon tea today - have tried dairy free afternoon tea in many of the surrounding places offering afternoon tea and this is by far the best. The staff, as usual, were friendly, efficient and accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. Great place to have afternoon tea in with lovely grounds to wander around afterwards. Would highly recommend.

Superb Mother’s Day afternoon tea here yesterday. Beautiful room, fresh generously filled finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and jam and a selection of tasty cakes. Washed down with tea made with tea leaves, not tea bags, and pink Prosecco. And a gift each for the two mothers in our party. And finally staff that were friendly, attentive and obviously enjoy working here. Recommend thoroughly.

Amazing venue incredible staff. Daughter & son in law wedding reception 2/12/23 was absolutely fantastic. Staff led by Clare were kind considerate helpful well organised made the day perfect. Food was delicious and over 100 guests all served well no waiting. All the staff could not have been more helpful they helped make the day very special. Day & evening guests were all extremely complimentary about staff location and service. Everyone had an amazing time. I would highly recommend Mulberry house for wedding reception. Christmas decorations were up so venue looked awesome

The venue is really lovely. The afternoon tea that we were served was the best we have had. Bearing in mind we have eaten at some of the most prestigious venues that really is a compliment. The staff were excellent engaging and friendly. Forget "Betty's" give this a try.

Mulberry House is an impressive building (built in 1767) and has nice, well looked after grounds (which must be perfect for a wedding). It's been extensively restored/modernised in the last decade, and looks the part. Our afternoon tea was in the dining room – with views over the garden. I understand tea is normally served in the conservatory, but this was in use for another large gathering (which we were fine with). After tea (with prosecco) costs around £35/head; maybe marginally above other local hotels of this type in the general area, but broadly similar. The sandwiches were OK – really pretty “boring/standard” and it would have been nice to see them more away from the standard ham on white bread, smoked salmon on brown etc etc. Scones were good, but only strawberry jam was on offer. Between us we had 6 assorted cakes, again they were fine, but “boring/standard”, with the chef using little imagination in their production. Our waitress was friendly, but simple mistakes were made (having to be asked twice for standard things like iced water for example). We've had afternoon tea in many establishments (see other reviews), and this is the first time I've ever been asked to pay extra for additional sandwiches/cakes. I fully understand this if a customer is “stocking up” to take home, but assuming they are to be eaten there and then, it gives a terrible impression. Overall “fine/average”. Would we go back to the hotel - “no”.

I took my 82 year old mum 4 weeks after a hip replacement as a little treat and change of scene. We couldn’t have picked a better place! Beautiful setting, super helpful staff and very stylish interior. The waitress even got my mum an extra cushion so she could get comfortable! The sandwiches included a great variation (were both veggie) and were exceptional! The scones were warm and outstanding and plentiful! We came home with a goody bag which we are looking forward to tucking into later! The range of teas offered is vast and they are great quality. Couldn’t be happier and highly recommend 😃

Had booked afternoon tea for a party of 5 as a special birthday treat for my Mum. Chose Mulberry House for it's beautiful setting (visited on a prior occasion for lunch). Unfortunately, this time we left disappointed. Having paid £21 p.p., we could have paid a lot less with a better selection of food if we had gone up to London! The orange juice which 2 of us opted for instead of tea was good and the scones were warm and tasty. The assortment of cakes was just so. For future reference please offer an even number of sandwiches using both brown and white bread: there were about 4 white ham and mustard (which none of us enjoyed); 4 white chicken (which were delicious); a few brown egg, and a multitude of salmon and cream cheese (only 2 out of 5 of us ate).

Had a lovely afternoon sitting on the garden terrace overlooking the lake enjoying a lovely afternoon tea with my friend. Sandwiches were lovely, so much that we asked for more which was not a problem. The scones and the little cakes were gorgeous. Service was excellent. I was given a voucher to go to Mulberry House, so decided to use it for our 24th Anniversary of meeting. The reception is a little tired & old fashioned - more than you'd expect from the outside. The lady manning it was so much more pleasant on the phone when I booked (may not have been same person) so I was a little disappointed by the less 'bubbly' welcome on arrival; although she wasn't unpleasant at all. However; I wasn't there to inspect the décor & I didn't notice an 'old peoples home' odour as a previous review mentioned. My Husband & I were led through to the conservatory which has a lovely view of the grounds that are very well kept, but I have to say the chairs are quite uncomfortable for a larger person & would benefit from a little cushioning & the very crackly music playing became a little distracting, although it wasn't loud. The food arrived rather quickly, so must be pre-made & I have to agree that the sandwiches are bland. We had salmon & cream cheese, cheese & cucumber & I think 1 egg & 1 ham, but I might be mistaken; the salmon one in particular was very tasteless. I noticed that EVERY other person had a mousse type thing on their display, but we didn't, so I assumed maybe they'd run out & we were given an alternative, yet I think it may have been missed off as the group who arrived after us had it on both of theirs. I couldn't be bothered to query it if I'm honest. The selection of teas are lovely & I tried 2 types, then we changed to lattes, which we enjoyed. I did leave with a satisfied tummy, but the cakes; although nice, are really tiny, literally a small bite each when cut in half, would be so much better to have one of each per person. The scones were lovely & we could've got additional for £1 each, yet more sandwiches was £4.95(?) which I wouldn't pay, as they're just not worth it, not for 6-8 fingers. Overall we enjoyed the afternoon experience, as it's something we haven't done before, but I have to agree with some points from the bad review. I wouldn't book it again personally, but only because it's quite an expensive treat to pay out for, so I'm glad we had a voucher on this occasion.

It was cooked well, very tasty, nicely presented, right temperature and filling . I could have had some more as it was like comfort food! The other ladies meals all looked inviting and tasty . We used Mulberry House as the venue to celebrate my mums 80th and couldnt be more thrilled with all of it. 12 of us had a three course meal first and the food was fresh, flavoursome and delivered all together for each course which was great. The staff were warm and helpful and really made my mum feel special. We then used their conservatory type rooms for an afternoon tea party for wider family, about 50 people in all. Again the food was fresh and higher than average standard. The room/s (the conservatory is made of 2 adjoining rooms) itself is so special looking out to little lake and some beautiful trees. We hired a singer that the venue recommended and he was excellent. Thank you to all the staff at Mulberry House for helping us make my mums 80th so perfect memorable, every one of you worked tirelessly and with a smile. Thank you.

This is more a review for the hotel and event as we were there for a family wedding (including the marriage ceremony). It was wonderful - of course the perfect summer weather helped to show it off at its best. Our room was spacious and comfortable in the courtyard. My parents room was a little small (not much room to walk around the bed) but still comfortable enough. The wedding went off without a hitch and the staff worked so hard that weekend as they had other weddings the day before and the day after. The breakfast was delicious and we were lucky to sit outside for that. We enjoyed exploring the grounds - the lake, the swans and the other animals. Highly recommend it.

I was looking for a venue to have a special birthday family dinner later in the year so booked to have dinner in the Jubilee restaurant as a trial. The setting of the hotel is beautiful and only approximately 20 minutes from Harlow. The evening meal we ordered was excellent. The butternut squash, cumin and lentil Wellington and the Chicken breast with dauphinoise potatoes in a cream sauce were both exceptionally tasty. The prices were comparable to many pub meals, even in comparison to chain pub restaurants, which really surprised me, whilst the quality of the food was significantly higher. I was surprised to find the restaurant quiet. With the quality of the food served and the reasonable prices I would highly recommend that you give the Jubilee restaurant a try. We will definitely be back. The hotel grounds are lovely for an after dinner stroll too.The most enjoyable meal I have had out for a long time.

There was a wide selection of teas and coffees and we opted for the traditional English breakfast tea. The sandwiches were varied and suited all our tastes and a few more were brought in once we’d finished them. We had a lovely warm scone each with clotted cream and Tiptree jam. As one of our party were pregnant we asked for pasteurised clotted cream which was provided, no problems. The sweets were plenty and varied, they included macarons, cake squares, fruit tarts and mini meringue pies. The setting was lovely and traditional with nice crockery. Our server Perry was very polite and extremely attentive, an asset to the business. All in all a great time had by all for great value and would recommend to anyone!

Rang last night for a booking today (New years eve). Staff said they had a table available. That was very true as we were the only booking for lunch! We were welcomed at reception by very friendly staff and shown into the bar.Feeling guilty that we had made the chef cook on a day when he could have been at home, we sat down in the empty restaurant 5 minutes later. The waiter (Alistair ) was attentive and very friendly. The food was absolutely superb and service perfect. We were made to feel very welcome and to be honest it was really nice being the only diners. I simply cannot fault Mulberry house. My son had his wedding here in August 2016 and we had my mums 90th birthday here as well. I took my partner here for a birthday cream tea last week. I opted for the Royal Cream Tea which included a glass of Prosecco. The Prosecco was dry & crisp as it should be. The cream tea was quite pleasant but the portion size was a little disappointing. Not as many sandwiches as we had expected and only one scone per person but only one was a fruit scone so one of us was going to be disappointed! The cakes, other than the Carrot Cake were a little dry and there were more Macaroons than anything else, which sadly, neither of us enjoy. There was a wedding on that day so we had our tea in their marquis which was fine as it was warm, bright and quite cosy. The crockery used was very pretty. I loved the little brightly-coloured, China cups & saucers. It makes the experience all the more special. The surrounding grounds are beautiful and worth a little walk-around. Afternoon tea is one of my favourite pass-times and I have experienced very many. With a little tweek of the menu, Mulberry House's offering could be perfect. Overall - Good value for money!

I am not one to leave reviews but in this instance i felt compelled to do so because I was unfortunately very much mislead by all the other reviews on this website. I booked this afternoon tea for my mothers birthday on Tuesday 14th February. We had never been here before but the trip adviser reviews looked positive and so we took a chance rather than travelling all the way in to central London, we thought it would be lovely if we could find somewhere of high quality outside of London . As we drove up to Mulberry House It looked beautiful, the grounds were well kept and they had lovely greenery. As soon as you open the front door to this establishment however you are met with quite a shock. Not only did it look very tired and old but it smelt and looked like an old peoples home. Ignoring my every instinct to walk out immediately i thought we are here now,we may as well give this a shot. We were led to a conservatory at the back which was a little bit better as you could at least see the beautiful grounds surrounding you. We were seated and left with menus to choose our tea which was all fine. We then asked what was in the sandwiches as we had a member of our party who did not eat fish. We were told it was too late, chef prepares all the sandwiches in advance and we could not change it now. This already started to ring alarm bells with me as I had never experienced this kind of response in any other place I had been to for afternoon tea. A few minutes later the afternoon tea stand was brought over ( telling me that everything had been prepared in advance and had been on the side waiting ) We had 4 finger sandwiches each, and upon asking for more we were given another plate but told that this was the only extras we could have..which was something else I had never heard of before. We had 1 scone each which you could tell had been made in house , but instead of them being light and fluffy they were doughy and very heavy, but these did end up being the best part of the whole experience. We bizarrely received an ice cream sundae glass with three scoops of clotted cream in there..one which arrived with fluff stuck to the side of it. Each of us had one small jar of tiptree jam on the table, like the kind when you go to a hotel for breakfast...this was something else which I found odd as usually there is a selection and its presented in a bowl of some kind. Finally we moved to the cakes - usually the most exciting and memorable part of the afternoon tea .. unfortunately not in the case. We had a selection of miniature cakes, which divided in to 3 was literally a forkful each. From memory we had a little chocolate tart, a cube of lemon drizzle cake, a cube of cherry bakewell sponge, a chocolate and cream cake and a mousse type cheesecake. The cakes were tasteless and absolutely dry to the bone! if they were made in house then i would not be surprised if they had been made a week ago, if they were bought then they had been left unwrapped on the side for about 3 days. I make no exaggeration at all when I say we would have been better off getting some fresh cream cakes from Tesco. We all took a small bite from each and left the rest as they were completely inedible. I honestly have never experienced anything like it. I have been to a number of places for afternoon tea, of varying standards and parts of the UK and I have never experienced anything so shockingly bad , how anyone could think that it was even palatable is beyond me. After we had paid the bill, my mother feeling awful that her birthday treat had been ruined, and that I had to pay over £50 for a meal which had been awful she made her way to the reception to complain as she did not want to make a fuss in front of the other diners. She made a point of politely saying how dry the cakes were to the front of house to which her only response was " thank you for your feedback". Having also worked for a hotel chain a few years ago, that response alone was enough to show me we had made huge error in coming here and taking a chance on somewhere local. I can honestly say please take note of this warning to anyone else looking for a nice place for afternoon tea.. do not go here! you will be better off going to a Patisserie Valerie! Hand on heart I would not go back here again if it was free. I am so sorry to have to leave such an honest and frank review, but it is nothing but a true account of the day, and does not compare at all to the disappointment we experienced from our visit there.

I was a guest at a wedding anniversary. The food and service are OK, but if you trust their car park signs you're liable to damage your car. Mine was a write off - would have cost more to repair than the value of the vehicle. This is some five years ago (The month quoted in this review is the best approximation the site offered me to the actual date I was there. The owner didn't want to know about the damage, doesn't want to know about it, and I'm still smarting).I clicked "Yes" On "Does This Restaurant Have Parking", but must add the proviso, "if you want to wreck your vehicle".

Having looked at other possible venues, Mulberry House seemed to be ideal with the attractive and peaceful grounds, together with the excellent accommodation in the Garden Room and the adjacent extension both of which afford fine views of the garden and one of the lakes. To “check out the place” after viewing, but before booking, we had a tasty and well cooked 3 Course Lunch in the Dining Room, which prompted us to book the Wake without any hesitation. The Wake for about 40 guests was superb. For the Buffet, we choose "Rate Guide D" from the Funeral Receptions leaflet, plus Mini Desserts and Fruit. Some family members stayed in the house prior to the Wake and they were pleased with their accommodation and filling breakfast.Mulberry House is ideally situated being on the A414 (Chelmsford Road) near the Four Wantz roundabout at High Ongar, and easily accessible to the M11 and the M25.I have no hesitation, whatsoever, in recommending this splendid venue, and the efficient and friendly staff. Some photos are attached.

We ate a really good three course wedding breakfast on Easter Saturday. The food was delicious and service was also very good. The next morning we ate a cooked breakfast which was the tastiest I've eaten in a long while.

Visited the restaurant for their Easter Sunday Lunch menu. Was impressed with the menu choice. It was 3 courses for set price of £29.95.The restaurant was a very pleasant room with good service there is also a conservatory attached which was serving High Teas. The meal was well cooked and presented. The waitresses were cheerful and friendly and willing to assist with any request.

The venue was perfect and we were booked for afternoon tea. The sandwiches and cakes were wonderful and the ambiance perfect for a small wedding with friends.

My partner and I had afternoon tea at Mulberry House yesterday. There was a wedding taking place at same time but that didn't affect the tea which was lovely band the service was first class

Reached my 65th at Christmas and as a surprise my family and friends organised an evening meal at the Mulberry House. Having dined there once before and was impressed I was expectant of a good night. No disappointments at all, great service and very good food. Everything was well cooked and staff very attentive, could not have wished for better. Cannot wait for another visit.

Great cafe with a smashing atmosphere. Food was priced cheaply and of very good quality. I loved it and will be going again. Well done.
