This restaurant changed hands some time back and this is the first takeaway we have had since then, we used to visit with friends every 5 or 6 weeks and get takeaways in between. The menu has changed significantly since the new owners took over, which is only to be expected, prices have risen sharply, some of which is also to be expected. When we collected the food it was piping hot and the staff were very friendly, sadly however that is where it started to go downhill. The poppadoms were soft, the same texture that they have if you leave one out overnight! The breads were very doughy and lacked seasoning (a common theme), the pilau rice was very pale yellow (I am not expecting brightly coloured rice but this looked odd and unappetising) and did not appear to have had any spices or seasoning used in its preparation. The peas in the peas rice were grey in colour and significantly over cooked. The curries themselves were simply tasteless, again a lack of seasoning did not help, the Dopiaza was like eating vegetables covered in gravy, there was no evidence of spices being used and no heat at all (I don't want hot curry but the mix of spices and a gentle warmth was absent). We had a Tarka Dhal which was nice and the pickles that came with the poppadoms were generous and tasty. Maybe this was just a bad night in the kitchen or maybe they are still trying to deliver the new menu but we will not rush back.

As per previous reporting the restaurant has changed hands and for me the standard of food doesn't compare to the previous owners. Erstwhile spicy dishes are now bland and lack depth of flavour. We were regulars for years and have given the new management time to improve but the food just doesn't do it for me anymore.

Having been a regular here for many years and it being by far the best Indian food iv eaten I was shocked and disappointed on my most recent visit to find the restaurant has changed hands and the quality of food gone massively down hill... The food is now bland and dishes lack character. My usual Balti was poor and the normally stand out masala watery and bland. I was also surprised to find when ordering the chicken shashlik starter which was normally served as a sizzling chicken dish to be served a random small portion curry dish? Clearly the new owners are interpreting the menu in there own way and the new chef isn't anywhere near that standard of that of the previous one. A real shame to see this restaurant change hands and quality slip. Let's hope the owners get a decent chef and a grip of the menu and they can return to the fantastic food this place has become known for

As this was our first visit we gad to rely on past comments and reviews. My starter, mixed kebabaid in a bed of onions were burnt and uneatable this nearly applied to the onion bhaji which had its base against the sizzling plate. Our other starters were fine. That can also be said of the mains plenty of meat, good quality sauce/gravy and enough rice from 2 portions for 3 people. So what about the shifty dodge. Well when you are given a menu you expect the price shown to be what you pay. WRONG....without any prominent or even lesser notice, the printed menu was subject to VAT at 20% on top!! The restaurent owner made no attempt to tell us so it became a disappointment that the prices we had to pay was not what was shown....so beware if you go that this restaurent applies a deceitful charging practice.....you are being warned!!!!

Gave this place a second chance, for a takeaway, having avoided it for years, given the closure of other local restaurants during Coronavirus lock down. It seems that convenience is still all that keeps it going. There are far better curry restaurants in the wider area beyond Southwell. Bland, gloopy sauces, chewy chicken and a “lamb” Bhuna that was 60% beef. Lovely staff, but won’t be trying again. If only Gurkha One was still going...

Whilst we enjoyed our time at this restaurant, with good service and lovely food, everything started to go downhill when we got home. All 4 members of our party have had food poisoning. whilst we understand that sometimes things like this happen, the way the restaurant reacted to our complaint was unacceptable. all we tried to do was call up and make them aware that this had happened so that no one else had the same experience, and were accused of lying by the manager and told that there must be something else wrong with us; we should go get checked out; that it is a family run restaurant with a good reputation so it possibly couldn't be true, and that none of the other tables had complained so we shouldn't be either. After being shouted at and spoken over down the phone for at least 10 minutes we had no other choice but to hang up as we were getting absolutely nowhere. bear in mind we have all been toilet/bed bound since, even calling 111 and getting a diagnosis that was then brushed off by the manager. it was like talking to a brick wall with a horrible attitude.

Went to this restaurant with wife and two friends on a Thursday evening. Was welcomed into the restaurant immediately on entering and shown to a table. Restaurant is spotless and has a 5* Council hygiene rating. Drinks served within minutes and complimentary puppodums and chutneys a minute or two later. Onion bhaji starters were delicious and best Ive had in years (one onion bhaji starter will serve two - they're used to this and brought 4 plates out when 2 of these starters were ordered). Plates cleared away almost immediately on finishing and mains served again within minute. My tandoori balti chicken was very tasty but could have been hotter, extra green chillies next time, personal taste no fault of the restaurant. Garlic naans were lovely and fluffy as was the pilau rice, perfectly cooked. Complimentary chocolate mints and hot flannels to finish. Best indian I've had in years with faultless service. We almost missed it as it is tucked away upstairs above a take away but we were so glad we didn't. The décor is very modern and clean and the seats are very comfortable. They have a very extensive menu and we started with usual poppadum and pickles which were very good. We shared a starter, no quibbles about that, and followed the exquisite Kashmiri Raan with a balti dish. No room for pudding. We prefer to eat mid week as it can get rather noisy at the weekends. I've dined here 3 times now, & the quality, quantity, and flavour of the food has always been excellent. The service is efficient & unobtrusive, & a complimentary drink offered at the end of your meal is not unusual. I like to go to this local Indian restaurant with friends and have been doing so since moving to Southwell 15 years ago.The food is both excellent and more importantly, consistent.... This is a very popular restaurant which has gained a solid reputation through effort. The staff are attentive but don't fuss, but have the time to advice on the menu and even amend dishes to individual taste. They recently tastefully refurbished the restaurant which has a pleasant, open and relaxing atmosphere. It is popular, so I would suggest you do need to book a weekend table at least 7 days in advance. Plenty of on-street parking outside and good pubs nearby. Recently found this restaurant and we've been back 3 times now. The food is excellent - as is the service. The tandoori specialities are a must to try. This restaurant represents real value for money and I would recommend to anyone.

You can be assured of a warm welcome, excellent value for money and delicious food. What more could one want for an excellent night out? Have tried many others throughout the UK and they come nowhere near the standard of this restaurant. Just make sure you book!

Visited this restaurant many times and have reveiwed it before in 2013 but because it has been redecorated over the last few months felt it time for another reveiw. Dined here Mon evening 20th Oct with a friend,It is probably one of those dining gems hidden away above shops on the high street the entrance is a door inbetween shops you have to look for it but once you walk through the door the decor which features water fountains with lights as been well done, a completely refurbished staircase with inset blue lighting new hand railing all in all a good improvement, the decor upstairs has got new lighting alcoves built in with decoration, new table cloths which all look very nice the floor however is still tiled and has yet to be done,so on to the eating bit, this curry throughout the menu in any combination is the best curry i have had and i compare this to the kismet indian up in edinburgh which when we was there was the number one restaurant out of over a thousand in the area and nationally one of the best so i think this curry ranks along side this easily. the staff are as always polite and helpful i say this because i have been through most of the menu with their help, the popadomes are still complimentory and do not transfer to the bill, the wine is always a good portion not light like in some restuarants always a good full glass, 2 can dine here easily for about £32/33 pounds thats drinks usually 2 wines, 2 beers, main, japaties, coffees, and of coarse the popodomes and chucknies,if you are lucky you can park underneath the restuarant just go through the archway and there is room for 2 cars quite handay,a good tip is you can generally get a table Mon-Thur without booking but Fri,Sat,Sun it is adviable to book, all in all well worth a visit.

I have been dining in this wonderful restaurant for a number of years and have found the quality of both the food and service remarkably consistent. The restaurant has recently had a decor makeover which also adds to the 'experience'. The menu is extensive, the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and happy to modify and adapt the menu to suit individual tastes.I have introduced several visiting friends to this restaurant and they all have enjoyed dining there. My only word of caution to fellow diners is this restaurant is very popular at the weekends, so you do need to pre-book to ensure you get a table.Overall an excellent Indian restaurant & takeaway in the heart of Southwell.

If you love curry and indian food in general, you're in for a treat. Based in the historical town of Southwell, this indian restaurant serves the tastiest food I've ever tasted. Not only that, but the service received from the staff is *always* impeccable. An example of this is when I dropped my spoon on the floor accidentally and was then given a clean replacement by the waiter. I've never had this level of service in any other restaurant I've dined in. The prices are unbeatable and very fair. Me and my partner usually pay no more than £30 between us (For the quality of the food and service, this is incredibly cheap!). Of course, we always tip the waiters for their excellent service because we always feel like we have underpaid! Complementary poppadums and dips are handed out whilst we wait for our food and complimentary drinks are served afterwards. Warm hand towels are also provided after the meal as well as a few "After Eights" mint chocolates.

Since the first time I went to this restaurant, I have received nothing but fantastic food and service. My partner and I go on a regular basis and are never disappointed. The service is impeccable in every way as the friendly, yet very professional staff do all they can to give you the best dining experience they can, which in my opinion is always successfully achieved! The food is absolutely delicious and you can recognise its high quality. You receive complimentary popadums prior to your meal and a drink after your meal which really emphasises the staffs determination to provide great service and value for money. It has recently been refurbished and looks fantastic. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone as I can safely say that it is not just the best Indian restaurant I have ever been to, but it is the best restaurant I have ever had the pleasure of dining in. As an extra bonus, the prices are more than reasonable. Top marks all round!

A great Curry House with extremely friendly and attentive staff, nothing is too much trouble, if you want to experiment a little with the dishes they are happy to oblige.Good value for money with complimentary Popadoms and end of meal drink.I would definitely recommend the Mixed Kebab starter which includes a large Onion Bhargi,Tandoori Chicken and Sheesh Kebab on a sizzling plate of peppers and onions, served with a mint Yoghurt sauce. My only downside is a lack of variation in the menu as everything seems to lean towards a Balti in style, but very nice all the same.I will eventually try the other Curry House in the town but keep finding myself coming here instead!I have been here with family,Friends and for Business and always a good time!

.....something was lacking. The menu seemed a little limited and the ambiance was a bit flat. It was difficult not to compare against the Khyber Pass only a stones throw away. The meal was good and very reasonably priced and the service good, the waiters very polite and attentive. But I think we'll stick to the Khyber for that extra "something" that you expect when going for a special night out. But don't let this review put you off........ try it and judge for yourself.

Blink and you'll miss this place as it is above other shops and accessed by a small doorway, but it's well worth the effort to find it. Very friendly and efficient staff. I dined there with 7 others early evening and we all enjoyed our different main courses. Mine was chicken jaipuri - chicken cooked with chillies, yoghurt and coriander - described as 'hot' on the menu. It was certainly spicy, but not 'over the top' and had a lovely light fresh taste as did the fluffy rice and tasty nan bread. The meal was reasonably priced on the menu, all the more so when you discovered that popadums were complimentary as was a digestif drink to finish. All in all an excellent curry house, spotlessly clean throughout and one to return to if I am ever again in delightful Southwell.

Family run Indian restaurant by the river with an elegant dining room and great for takeout. The manager is welcoming and his charming mother takes orders and will advise on food preferences. They have plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. My favourite are the samosas, sag aloo and dhal dishes there are loads of inventive and delicious dishes for meat and fish eaters. I always look forward to eating there.

Had a take away today from here, nice staff but very average food at best, we ordered 4 main courses, butter chicken… spicy? Chicken biryani….spicy? Garlic chicken…spicy? No, non of these dishes should be spicy!!! not from anywhere else, also dried chicken that didn’t taste at all like chicken. The rice was also dried and hard. We will never go back. Not good enough for £80!! If you are going to charge that kind of money for a take away then it needs to be decent!!. Not good, find another curry place
