Mr. White's English Chophouse in Dover

Excellent service by kind hearted people that make every meal a worthwhile. The food was really good, with a variety of options. We love Paulo, he was amazing, and very attentive!

Whilst visiting the UK from Canada we decided to have a Sunday lunch whilst in Dover. We were excited to see that there was a Marco Pierre White restaurant and we reserved a table for 2. We were surprised at the somewhat rundown location realising that it was a MPW restaurant we were confident that everything would be up to par. Sadly we were mistaken. We arrived at the scheduled time for lunch and although the restaurant was completely devoid of patrons we were offered a small rickety table at the back of the restaurant. Our waitress came and asked us if we wanted to order drinks. We ordered 2 cocktails which were very good. We ordered bottled water (unaware that tap water was an option) We both ordered soup which came and was tasty and hot. My wife ordered roast beef, I opted for the lamb. The meat was somewhat fatty, the potatoes were soft and soggy (no crispy outside) the vegetables were pretty mediocre to put it mildly and the small Yorkshire pudding was bland and soft. We had to remind the staff that we wanted horseradish and mint sauce (despite it being included in the menu) The staff would also shout to each other across the restaurant - all the above was hardly conducive with a fine dining experience. The 2 waitresses who served us kept calling us 'you guys' when we thanked the younger one for bringing something the response was 'thats ok' A young mother came in (part of a group who arrived later) with a VERY young babe and a child of 2-3 years old. Whilst 4 staff hovered around the entrance area - whe had to struggle with a stroller and her 2 children alone - not one of the staff offered to help her. All in all we wondered whether this is a MPW restaurant or a badly managed franchise? Overall the restaurant decor is bland and dated, the food underwhelming and the service disappointing. Marco, if you read this I would say that you need to take a trip to Dover. This restaurant, food and service are all sub par - I am surprised that you put your name to it...

On arrival, and throughout the visit, I received superb service from my server Jack. I am severely site impaired and registered blind. He made me feel extremely comfortable and even went to the trouble of offering to read the menu to me (which wasn’t necessary) Well done young man. I ordered the ribeye steak priced at £31.50 when it arrived the first bite told me all I needed to know, very tough. I sent this back and the second plate arrived which was slightly better but still just about edible. The tomato was Luke warm and room temperature. I ploughed my way through half of the meal and left feeling disappointed. I’m sure I’ll get a reply to this review saying how sorry they are that it didn’t meet their exacting standards but it’s not an apology I want It was a first class meal first time. Would I go again? … No. All in all I’ve had better steaks in Wetherspoons

What a superb date night meal we had this week , service was exceptional, food was excellent , would definitely come again . We also popped into the bar area area for the jazz this was fantastic

Expected a far better experience to be absolutely honest. The food was just ok, although my main course, Chicken Kiev was dreadful. Seriously overcooked, very small and dry. Served on a bed of peas, with fries. I ordered a portion of gratin dauphinoise as a side, (my fries went to my partner) and they too were disappointing. Mushy, very unseasoned, seriously lacking in flavour and cold. I had French Onion Soup to start and it was excellent but cold!! The service itself was questionable. Plenty of staff members but I couldn't work out who was in charge. Food served from the right and cleared from the right too?? A few of the guests ordered puddings, which were enjoyed but even right at the end when we came to pay the bill, there were some leftover side plates from the main course, still with food on them on the table. I also noted that none of the staff seemed able to clear properly, either stacking plates on top of each other or only able to clear two plates at a time. FYI I did not complain as it had been booked by my nephew following his fathers (my brothers) funeral and it was just not the right thing to do. Overall a disappointing experience and given the name and the prices, I did expect a lot more in terms of flavours, quality and service. Would not recommend.

Our daughter-in-law had booked a table in the restaurant but called to ask if we could be seated outside as the weather was good and they wanted to bring their pooch. The staff let us choose from the restaurant menu and we all ordered the roast and dessert, two courses for a reasonable £25. The food was delicious, the waiters were the best, welcoming and helpful, and the live music was marvellous. We celebrated birthdays, and the entire experience was so enjoyable, particularly as our son and daughter-in-law treated us!

We ate here while staying in the attached hotel. Service was very good and staff had made note of all the things on the booking. Menu choice is very good with something for most. The starter I had was a little underwhelming (calamari) I think the oil had cooked too many onion rings. All the other food we had was very good and portion size was reasonable. Not the cheapest meal out but I think it was value for money.

Booked a table for 19-30 as the website stated Sunday roast an offer, on arrival was informed that the roast finished at 15-00 although this was not stated on the website, so totally disappointed. We picked from the main menu which was highly priced and not value for the money spent. The decor was also tired . The only good thing was that the staff were polite . I won’t go again

Average meal and rather overpriced for what we got. Steak was overcooked. Interior decor rather scrappy. On a positive the staff were very attentive and friendly Overall disappointing for what I expected for MPW restaurant. I wouldn't return or recommend. Save your money and go elsewhere

Unimpressed unfortunately. We started with a bottle of red and some olives. The red was a bit too warm for my taste and the olives were unpittted and tough. We then chose from the a la carte menu. Calamari shared starter which was ok, then two mains. My wife had the supreme trout with buttered spinach side and she enjoyed it. I had the chicken Kiev which I found to be rather dry and lacking in flavour - just dry chicken in breadcrumbs. Very disappointing. We didn’t complain. Just paid the £121 bill. I felt a Beefeater meal would have been equally enjoyable and half the price.

I visited on a Sunday with my elderly mother in law. We opted for the Sunday roast and we were very happy with the food and overall service. Food arrived quickly and was of a good standard . Drinks: a bit pricey and for some reason we could not order soft drinks in pint measures- when I asked, no one was able to explain why , I must add that most staff seemed embarrassed about this as it now makes a soft drink a very expensive option. Please reconsider and bring back pints of coke/lemonade etc. I HAVE TO MAKE A POINT AND WARNING TO OTHERS WHO COME HERE FOR A SUNDAY LUNCH. There was a violinist playing throughout- this sounds lovely- except it wasn't!!! The amplifier was set far too high, what could have been pleasant BACKGROUND music had now become very intrusive. Dining is a very social experience ( or it should be!) But having to raise our voices to talk to one another is NOT acceptable, this diminished our experience , so much so that I would NOT come back unless I can be certain that there will be no repeat of this overwhelming noise. I did speak to a manager to explain that we were finding it intrusive, I would like to say that he responded well and asked the violinist to turn the amp down, SADLY THIS WAS NOT THE CASE- VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE- you have ruined our experience and still expect a service charge to be paid!!!! SIMPLY NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

I have been to Marco's London restaurant and the steak was great. I took my family of 6 people to your restaurant in Dover for the steak. We had rib eye and fillet. I'm afraid to say that we were all very disappointed. The rib eye was tough (although cooked rare) and the fillet steak were flavourless. What was even worse was when we saw the cleaner pull the hoover though the restaurant and then one of a kitchen staff came out of the kitchen and cleared the table. I thought I was at Mcdonald. There is a picture in the restaurant of Marco saying that he makes Gordon Ramsey cry I'm afraid that after eating the steak and paying the bill I felt like crying. Although the bill was London prices the standard certainly wasn't. The table was booked under the name of Bradley on the 20th of May. I look forward to hearing back from you. Thank you.

I booked because of the name above the door. I didn't read other reviews first, I wouldn't have gone if I had !!! Disappointed, it doesn't cover it; Beetroot was not pickled. The rare steak was raw, and the medium was passed well done. Garnish was rubbish. Overall, it was very expensive, mediocre/bad pub food from the 90s. Trying to be a restaurant, which is tired and needs a refurb throughout; the best thing was the drinks !! and crumpled, dirty paper menus. Not impressed..

Having had an excellent meal in Wheelers on our first night we booked a table at the Chophouse for the second. For starters my wife opted for the beetroot and goats cheese salad and I chose the French onion soup. For the main course she went for the fillet steak and I chose the ribeye, with peas and spinach as sides. We both really enjoyed our meals and found the food to be of top quality. The steak was cooked to perfection. The service was also to a very high standard and we were seated at a table with views of the sea. Our first visit to a MPW restaurant and it certainly will not be the last.

We came away to Dover for a weekend of birthday treats - and the Marco Pierre White restaurant within the Best Western Premier Dover Marina hotel did not disappoint. I approached the restaurant at 6:40pm to enquire regarding availability for the same evening, space was ample and I booked for 7:30pm. The server noticed I had a birthday balloon in my hands, and asked if it was for a birthday meal. I agreed that it was, for my partner. On arrival we were seated at a two-seater table by the window with a beautiful moon-lit sea view. The table had been decorated with gold ‘happy birthday’ and star shaped confetti - a lovely unexpected touch. The food was fantastic. We opted for two-courses from the set menu. Starters of Chicken Soup and Shakshuka plus sourdough for the table. Mains being the Cheese and Onion Pig Burger and the Lamb a la Dijonaisse. £19.95 for two courses per person is fantastic value for money, alternatively there is £24.95 for 3-courses however we weren’t enamoured by the set menu dessert choices. We opted to share a Mr Caulson’s Sticky Toffee Pudding from the Main Menu for dessert, as we were quite frankly already stuffed at this point. To our surprise, a candlelit brownie arrived with the team of waiters/waitresses singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to my partner. The plate had ‘Happy Birthday’ written on it too. This was a fantastic surprise, and just like the table decoration, came free of charge. The Sticky Toffee Pudding followed suit - a sweet delight for both of us. Overall the team were great to communicate with, all very friendly and quick to respond to any needs.

Superb service, the staff were smart and extremely attentive. Great Food, everything we had was especially tasty. Very comfortable, lovely room, nice and warm.

Very, very average to say the least. The aesthetics of the places is lovely and has a lot of potential, however, we all felt it was disappointing and very mediocre. We eat out a lot having a Kent food page, and unfortunately this just didn’t meet the standards of other restaurants we’ve been too especially being associated with MPW you’d expect a really lovely meal especially with the high prices. My partner had the rump of lamb, which was cooked well and was pink as it should have been but unfortunately, it was so chewy and was just served on a small bed of peas, pearl onions and gravy, which seems odd given the standard price of the dish. Had we paid full price (£24.95) for it we’d have been extremely disappointed. My friend and I had the chicken kiev which was mediocre. My friend had the burger which was dry. The fries were however lovely. Service was ok, staff seemed friendly. Given we had the 50% off mains promotion & were under a bit of a time constraint, we did not complain, but all agreed we would not return unfortunately.

Our visit was an early dinner on Christmas Eve. The restaurant looks good and is well furnished, over trades on the MPW brand but there you go. The food was nothing better than ok, and at this price range and style of restaurant it should have been way better. If I can cook better then it isn't good enough (and it wasn't). Service was the real low point, after being led to a table in the, cold, conservatory we were promptly abandoned by the waiting staff who were happier chatting to themselves in the warmer part of the restaurant. Our waitress didn't seem to know what was going on on at all, we asked how long the restaurant had been there and she didn't have a clue and got confused with how long she had been there. When I asked for directions to the gents toilets she thought it was hilarious. The knowledge of the menu and wine list was poor at best. I removed the optional service charge because of this. Sadly, this is not the best restaurant in Dover, and that's saying something.

The restaurant is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but thats almost all the good points. The servers were friendly enough, and took the time to ask how things were, especially when clearing your plates between courses. The food, it was a shame really and definitely not a meal I would rush back for or recommend. Starter - some jarred peppers and some mozarella. No real taste, quite bland and something my kid could have thrown together - absolutely no technical skill went into preparing this. Main - this was reasonable, the steak melted in the mouth, but nothing I couldn’t get in other known steak houses. Pudding - not as described on the menu. Disappointing when the menu says white stilton and fig chutney, for the chef to serve brie and sandwich pickle!!! Ruined the meal to be served something you hadn’t ordered. If you run out of an ingredient then you tell your customers, you dont serve them something else and hope they dont realise. I would only return if I was booked at DBB in the next door hotel, it wouldn’t be out of choice.

We visited Dover Marine Hotel yesterday 16th December 2023 for a Christmas lunch. We have visited many times with family for coffees at this Hotel, but never for lunch, so we had no expectations. From the moment we arrived we were treated with courtesy and attentiveness . We were taken to our table which was a lovely crescent shaped banquette and seated. We had a wait of half an hour for our meal in which time we were given fresh French bread, plenty of water and our specified wine and drinks. Our orders taken we were able to take in the atmosphere which was tastefully decorated in the English Christmas tradition with lit Xmas trees. Our starters - salmon and peppers and mozzarella were light, finely prepared and the Game Pie was very filling - all were delicious. The mains were all traditional roast Turkey which lay almost regally across our plates with its courtiers of Brussel sprouts, carrots, French beans, pigs in blankets and stuffing. Finishing with a home made brownie, superb ice-cream and a Dickensian plum pudding. Coffee was offered but declined . Our extended family live abroad so we have made it a yearly event to celebrate with them in spirit at various local eateries and restaurants We all agreed that this lunch was the best not only for its excellent cuisine, but most importantly for its wonderful service. All the staff in the restaurant and throughout the Hotel were impeccable in their manner, in particular our two waiters - Paolo was one who served us and nothing was too much trouble. We wish to commend the whole experience.

booked the table but on my arrival on the day was told they was fully booked and couldn't allocate my booking and was told they could give me a table in the noisy bar instead .very disappointed as havent been there several time was hoping to celebrate my wife birthday . very disappointed on how the matter was dealt with !!

Our dinner at this restaurant involved two different streams: the food and the experience. The food was simply excellent my wife and I tried different appetizers, mains and desserts. All were great. The experience was a bit different. We were seated by the window which was very nice but the chairs were very uncomfortable. There was a screaming child in the restaurant who nobody seemed to be able to control. There were only two servers so the service was a bit slow. When I went to pay, it seemed to be a challenge to find out if and how I could charge it to my room. Maybe we just hit an off night.

Absolutely amazing! Had a two course meal, Food was out of this world, really tasty and plentiful. Excellent choice of starters, mains and deserts. Service was above and beyond Would 100% recommend

The restaurant is situated within the Best Western Marina Hotel. Plenty of parking on the road. The restaurant is very smartly decorated with tables in the conservatory overlooking the sea front. Staff were very friendly , service a little slow but we were not in a hurry. Plenty of choice , we chose from the set menu of 3 courses . Two of us had steak which was cooked perfectly and well presented . The chips were probably some of the best we have had for some time. The wine was well priced for a prime location. Would recommend despite a group of 14 very loud men who swore quite a lot sitting across from us - not the restaurants fault.

this spot is right on the sea front ,with panaramic views. the resturant is very clean and styish. we had the CHOPHOUSE-A-LA-CARTE-MENU. a very good selection of quality food.we all had different staters and main meals.prawn cocktail is a must and the trout main. we sat by the window and was served by the famous PABLO,who could not do enough for us.We all had a great experience and impressed our friends. a fab saturday afternoon.

We had the set menu for dinner, which was very good value. The food was good and there’s a great drinks menu. The staff were very attentive. We also ate there for breakfast at the hotel. It was very standard buffet food, not always rhetorical hottest.

What a perfect lunch. We attended the restaurant today for my parents 40th Wedding Anniversary. I had booked ahead of time and when we arrived the table had been decorated for us and looked beautiful. The food was amazing, we ate from the Sunday menu and the roasts were delicious. Every detail was perfect. After we finished our meal the waiter brought over a dessert with Happy Anniversary written on with was a lovely touch. One of the best dining out experiences I have had in a while and I would definitely recommend this restaurant to people for special occasions. It was fantastic. Thanks again to Par as usual his service was fantastic.

Sirloin steak I asked to be rare was only in part, i know that is difficult when it varies in thickness, my wife's poached egg as part of her Fishcake dish was almost hard boiled and not enjoyable. Wine bottle was unsealed before being brought to the table, so a training need for front of house staff. The environment was dirty and when we pointed this out, our server said she would let them know, this indicates to me a lack of understanding of team. In the resteraunt business there is no them only us! I expected a good standard of food and was disappointed.

We tried the afternoon tea, which was okay except that the crust had not been removed from all of the sandwiches and one sandwich had no beef except for a very tiny piece, 80 percent of which was just bread. Even the butter did not reach the attached crust. The service was fine. The roasted tomato soup was fine, but nothing special. The Steak and the Redefine meals were okay but again, nothing to indicate that this was fine dining. I would not recommend the redefine meat, it maybe veggie, but it looked and tasted like meat, which is okay if you eat meat, but not for veggies. Ice Cream was excellent. The service was appalling. The server was stood, two tables down from our table, leaning against the wall, talking and laughing loudly to a couple throughout the duration of our main meal. Having eaten our main meal, we were waiting for our plates to be removed and order desert and waited and waited. The server had not budged from the wall. My wife attempted to attract her attention, without success. I turned and tried, and my only option, other than to get up and walk to her was to talk out loud and louder until I had to shout to attract her attention.

Had a lovely family lunch at MPW Dover, the service can be a bit hit and miss but we were looked after by Jack today and he was excellent, thank you for your caring attitude and general all round help.

Booked this restaurant for my brothers birthday meal after hearing great reviews and wow, we was not disappointed! Food, drink and service was all spot on, couldn’t fault anything. The staff even brought out a birthday plate which was such a lovely gesture and really did make our evening that bit more special! We ate Sunday diner in the hotel restaurant with some friends. The food and service was exceptionally good.

Having been to this restaurant at the end of September we were really looking forward to a lovely evening meal. What has happened? On arrival, we were asked if a reservation had been made and my husband gave his name. The (manager?) waved us to an area without pointing/taking us to a table. We eventually chose on in the Orangerie overlooking the marina. The restaurant was only at about 25 - 30% capacity so it was quiet. What was clear was the young and inexperienced staff on duty who had very little direction and definitely needed training. One water had food down his trousers. We used the vegan and main menu to order from. The starters arrived and my beetroot salad nearly landed in my lap. My husband was very happy with his salmon starter. As soon as the starters were removed the main meal arrived. The side dishes had not been ordered with the kitchen so we canceled those as they would have arrived after we had eaten. My pasta dish was dry. It had clearly been prepared and finished off in the microwave. There was no offer of parmesan. We asked for breathing space between the main and deciding on a dessert or we would have been in and out of the restaurant in less than 1 hour! Not an 'experience' but get you out of the door! I chose sticky toffee pudding and only ate a few mouthfuls as it had been put in a microwave and was stuck/burnt to the plate. This was a very different experience compared to September and very disappointing. Has Mr. White visited? Does he know the quality of food being served in his name? To say this meal cost about £135 was an affront. I think I could do a better meal using M & S prepared meals. So sad.My suggestion: quality ingredients, quality chef and trained staff to deliver a meal that deserves a price tag of £135.

We had the Set Christmas Menu on all three days there was only 1 Gluten Free option for Starter, Limp dry Beetroot Salad , 1 option for Main and Dessert with NO deviation from the Menu, we were not even offered Gluten Free Mince Pies or Coffee for afters

We went for a roast dinner. Excellent value for money and I would say the best roast in town (as a local). We had main and the cheeseboard after (which was also excellent). The service is very good and staff are really friendly. We were mainly served by Hannah, who is excellent. We are definitely going back and I would highly recommend.

Attended one of the first whiskey tasting event. Had an amazing time. The food paired perfectly with the whiskey selection and learned a great deal about whisky form the connoisseur. Definitely appreciated the gent taking his time to travel all the way from Birmingham. Great night overall.

We went here for my birthday in August. I have been wanting to write a review for quite a while but was distracted. Excellent service, lovely food and nice drinks. Would definitely recommend. I was more disappointed with booking via The Fork! When I rang the restaurant, they hadn't received our booking. Thankfully, there was space available.

Had butternut squash soup and Shepherds pie.. And the 2 dishes were very disappointing.. Very bland no flavour I was there Friday and Saturday last weekend of sep. If that was a chef in the kitchen no way did he taste as he cooked.... Next time I'd go chippy round the corner. Breakfast on the other hand was great. Staff in dinning room lovely

Such a lovely evening with my husband and son on Saturday night. We eat at MPW resturants a couple of times a year and this certainly met my high expectations. The food & drinks menu were both extensive but quality certainly wasn’t comprimised. My highlights were the scallops and the customer service - perfection! My 6yr old son felt really involved in the experience which was fab. My only 2 issues were:1) I wasn’t asked how I like burger cooked (however, if i asked the waiter i’m sure he’d have corrected this)2) In the main hotel area, customers weren’t made to wear a mask. One man held a mask to his face whilst talking to the staff then took it off to walk to the bathroom without being questionned. Although this isn’t the resturants fault, it did impact my experience. Would I return? Absolutely!
