Mr Tang in Southend-on-Sea

Something not quite right here. The main course, sizzling mixed meats (i chose chilli black bean sauce with it) was tasteless. No chillies, only two thin slices of green pepper. Portion small but adequate for me after my oysters starter. A bowl of rice is £5-£6, too expensive. Wine at £7 a glass is also too expensive and i cant drink a whole £28/£35 bottle alone. No music, so poor atmosphere, listening to four men on an adjacent table for two hours. I don't like the compulsory 10% tip added to the bill which was £60 for one person. Expensive.

Spent £56 on food and it was absolutely disgusting, spare ribs nothing to spare on them, dirty prawn toast, crispy beef was literally just batter, the food was actually dreadful, rang up to say something and the bloke on the phone assuming owner, was down right rude and unresponsive, constantly over talking. Wasn't looking for a refund just letting him know the foods dead, not the first shit order but benefit of the doubt obviously no changes, wok 88 and food paradise, smoke this out the water.

Freshly cooked/hot food. A broad menu to chose frim

Wasn’t the greatest from here, chips undercooked, very small portions, sauces watery, very tasteless. Overall pretty disappointing won’t order again.

This resturant is excellent. The service was friendly and you don't feel rushed. The food is amazing too! Will definitely be going back.

Good food but starter portions small (and really expensive). Service wasn’t the best - missing parts that were ordered and lack of plates and cutlery unless requested. For a local restaurant the prices have rocketed - drinks crazy expensive and a compulsory 10% service charge is a bitter pill (especially when it’s not earned). Despite every effort to not be greedy the bill for 2 adults and one child was over £100. A money making machine first and foremost, we’ll not be rushing back. A better customer experience can be had elsewhere.

There are very few Chinese restaurants in Leigh on Sea. This is a find but you definitely need to book at the weekends. Great staff, a lovely paced service, great food. Not cheap but worth every penny and the fact that the restaurant was full from the time we arrived at 7pm until the time we left says it all. Will definitely make a return visit.

Excellent, I can't recommend enough. In fact, we regularly travel from Romford just to eat at Mr Tang!

Another excellent experience at Mr Tang. Food was delicious and plentiful and Mary and her team are outstanding hosts. Looking forward to my next visit.

We ordered a takeaway and deliberately went further afield as we thought this was meant to be a great restaurant. We had to go and collect as they had no drivers. The food was more expensive than our locals and the portions were very small so no value for money. My aubergine starter had the purple skin removed and was very odd - just a few sticks of floppy mush. The rest, as per my photos, was awful. There wasn’t a hint of freshness. We left most of it. Would never order again!

First time there last night for my birthday! Fantastic food and service and a lovely atmosphere!

We hadn't booked, but the very nice young lady quickly found us a table. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The food was very nice. The lady "Mary?" who I think may have been the owner, was charming and friendly, as was the dark haired waitress. A real gem and we will be back. If the owner reads this, one suggestion- please can there be a little background music? There was none last night( not sure if there usually is) and it makes for a more comfortable atmosphere during a lull in conversation when you can't clearly hear other diner's conversations. But all on all, def worth a visit!

First time visiting this restaurant on recommendation from many people and wasn't disappointed food was amazing! highlight being the soft shell crab starter🥰 service is friendly and professional would recommend to anyone and will definitely be back

Really love this family-run restaurant. The quality of the food is amazing every time, and we are always given a friendly welcome. The crispy aromatic duck just keeps us coming back. I can’t recommend this restaurant enough.

Just ordered around 18 items for takeout… reasonable priced and extremely tasty!! Very happy I will be back!!

The very best food and great service

Been here numerous times and have never been let down. We had our anniversary here tonight, with many friends, and as usual they went over and above to make us welcome. the food was just exquisite and the service was second to none. Massive thumbs up to a lovely family run Restaurant 👍👍

Been going here for 5yrs.not been for a few months.last visit 2 weeks ago.great welcome as always.but unfortunately was not impressed on this visit.had set meal for two,starter was ok but smaller than before and the other dishes realy were portioned for one person.had two small sort drinks each the bill was almost £80 plus leaving a tip.sorry to the lovely owner and great staff but too expensive for the average person for what was served

Absolutely no words! First time to try it, but we will definitely come back. The food was amazing, large portions, nicely prepared. Very friendly staff and even if the place looks a bit outdated, I was impressed how clean it was.

Hmm , same old Chinese food with the taste that they all have . Not very good quality food , wasn’t hot in fact Luke warm , I wouldn’t recommend nor would I return even if everywhere else was shut . How hard can it be to make decent food . This is my own honest experience if this eatery .

Been going here for years and the food is still amazing. More people should visit! Mary and the team are lovely but they could do with some more clientele, go visit.... you wont regret it!!!!

Great food and would say prices are ok but we've been put off by £11 service charge I do not agree to and I believe is an absolute rip-off.

Absolutely awful! Read the reviews and thought we would give this restuarant a try as someone on google said the portion sizes were big and affordable. Service was awful.. Kept getting an excuse saying Mary is not here shes ill.. Whos Mary...couldnt care less who Mary is. We waited over an hour for our food to get on the table and when it did finally come...it was all brought out at a snails pace..so the food at the start was cold..portion sizes were not worth the money they were charging...and then when it came to the bill they wanted to add a service charge.... which we refused to pay...why would you pay if the service wasnt there. Absolutely avoid dont be fooled by the reviews on here! Would have been better off geting a takeaway delivered from around the corner to us.

WARNING!!!! Make sure you check your bill the lady owner not the one that makes funny noises will have you over in a shot such a shame because its good food

What a fabulous evening for my mums 80th birthday. Food was delicious , staff excellent, very accommodating and attentive. 15 of us with a packed restaurant of other diners and they couldn’t have done anymore. Thank you Mr Tangs

Visited last night for my daughters 16th birthday with a group of 8. We were immediately greeted warmly by the staff and taken through the menu choices. Food was amazing (recommend the sizzling chicken!) and we were even given a complimentary portion of my daughters favourite chicken balls as a birthday treat! The waiter who looked after us was absolutely brilliant; joined in with banter with us and also took selfies with my youngest at the end of the night! He also bought the whole restaurant to attention when my daughters cake was bought out,announcing her name and leading the other customers in singing Happy Birthday. Would like to also mention the lady who manages who came over and had a lovely chat with us. Was really looked after well and am sorry to say that we hadn't visited before now. We had such a fantastic time and will definitely be booking again soon 🙂

Came here for dinner yesterday as a family of four. Have been here before but not for around 3 years so was hoping it was going to be as nice as I remember. The restaurant was full which was a good sign. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and polite. Despite it being so busy the food was really lovely. We had mixed starters, crispy duck and crispy lamb, followed by various mains with rice and noodles. Everything was hot and fresh and so tasty. The sizzling fillet steak was gorgeous. We all commented on what a nice meal and atmosphere it was. It felt like a family run restaurant and possibly is. The lady who seems in charge was so friendly, and all the staff made sure at various points throughout the meal that we were happy with the food. The meal itself wasn't rushed and there was a nice gap between courses. We will definitely be back.

Mr Tang is something of an institution in these parts, having been in its current premises for over 30 years. Since we had tried the takeaway from here and always enjoyed the food, it was high time we sampled the restaurant itself, and we were not disappointed. Every dish we ordered was served promptly, generously portioned and pleasingly presented. The highlight was definitely the scallops, if you like shellfish and you don’t order these, you’re missing out! This is a family run establishment and the staff are lovely. Yes the dining area looks a little dated but that just adds to its charm and it’s spotlessly clean. If you’re local to Rayleigh and haven’t popped in, what are you waiting for? Highly recommended

Worst chinese ive ever had,went there to get a takeaway,restaurant looks like its back in the 70's! Food came out within 2 mins of me making my order,chicken was rubber and tasted distgusting,sweet sour sauce was watery,just overall,worst chinese ever had,will never step foot in there again!!!!!

I am not a regular visitor of Chinese restaurants so I can’t say for sure where Mr Tangs stands in quality of dishes. BUT, what I can say is the service is excellent, all of the food we ordered was piping hot and tasted lovely. We will definitely be returning.

This was my first visit to this restaurant however my sister has been before, on arrival we were very quickly show to our table (I hadn't booked as it was a Thursday) however is was very busy. The decor is very good giving a warm and cosy atmoshpere, there is plenty of seating which is very comfortable. After looking at the menu we decided to go for option B which is the meal for two. The table service was excellent, all of our servers (including the owner) were very friendly and chatty. Our food arrived in 3 waves, the first being the starter, this was on a large platter and there was more than enough for the two of us. Next came our next dish which was duck and this was followed my our main meal whcih consisted of 3 main and 1 vegatables and a bowl of rice. The food is well cooked and very nicely presented and tasted just great my complements to the chef/s. We were in there for just under 3 hours and were the last people to leave. We had a lovely talk with many of the staff and the owner at the end which made for a very pleasant evening. I would imagine that if you were dining towards the end of the week it would pay to book. I live in Spain so sadly can't visit that often but I have promised to go back again before my return at the end of March. Many thanks for a great evening and lovely food from my sister and I.

This place does not deliver, good job because I would of asked them to come back and collet it !!! absolutely shocking !!! Needed the kids arm bands to swim through the grease - we tried it and it’s definitely a no Who likes dry crispy duck ? I don’t do reviews but people need to know - absolutely horrific !!

Our first takeaway from this restaurant which appeared to have received good reviews. However found ribs, spring rolls and chow mein cooked in a little too much fat for my taste

Delicious food let down by chaotic service and expensive drinks, a pint of tiger beer is 9 pounds! And carlsberg 5.40! I would also recommend they scrap the 10% service charge and let people tip what they feel comfortable with themselfs as our charge would of ment an extra 60 pounds on the bill witch was unacceptable especially as families are feeling the pinch with high inflation. Nice polite people and good atmosphere, they did resolve my concerns without any problem.

Friendly helpful staff. Made vegetarian dishes requested on the night. Parking outside a bit tricky, but you can park (free) across the road.

Moved in nearby a year ago but due to covid had never been able to try. Accommodated us late at night and food was exceptional. Freshest best tasting Chinese we have had in years and will definitely be returning regularly

We have been coming to this restaurant for 30 years and can easily say that we have never had a bad meal. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. On this visit we had the sweet and sour chicken which was lovely and the salt and chilli squid which is fresh and light. We will be back soon.

First visit to this Chinese. Good service, attentive staff, fine fresh cooked food. Will definitely return. One thing of note is we thought it a little bit pricey.

We had a table booked and our friends were stuck in traffic coming from London. We called to advice we were going to be late and they assured us all was ok, however upon arrival we were informed that there were no hygiene facilities, ie toilets or (worse still) running water to wash ones hands, or wash up or (worse still) for the chef to wash his hands after handling food stuffs like RAW chicken, prawns, pork!!!!!!!!!

This is a restaurant that is close to home, yet rarely visited because our eldest son is disabled and the tables always appeared through the window to be too close together for it to be wheelchair friendly. That said, we decided on a whim to head out for a family meal last week and we weren't disappointed. The attentive staff moved chairs out of the way to accommodate our wheelchair and then continued with their friendly and warm service throughout the meal. As far as the food was concerned, it was all excellent - the dumplings were amongst the best we have had, the ribs were huge, tender and tasty and the aromatic lamb in lettuce leaves were amazing. The main courses were also really tasty and plentiful. We look forward to visiting again soon!

Wonderful evening spent at Mr Tang’s the food was divine. The scallops were done to perfection. Then we had the set menu. every dish was extremely delicious, so much food, and all enjoyably tasty.The service from Mary, Kelly and the team behind the scenes doing all the cooking in this family run business was superb. Couldn't fault the service but it was early 18.00 hrs so we were the only people there. Food freshly cooked for the reasons stated above. Food was not oily my Singapore noodles lacked seasoning but that could be down to my palate although I do not think so

Just moved to the area and thought we'd try the local Chinese. Had a very warm welcome from whom we found out later was the owner. The restaurant was busy and everyone working was professional and attentive. The food was excellent and at a reasonable price. I highly recommend a visit or takeaway

My husband and I enjoyed 3 course on a Friday evening. The ribs were beautifully cooked and fell of the bone! The smocked chilli chicken was beautiful. The duck was delicious and an extremely large portion. We managed to eat half of the rice, chicken and beef dish we ordered which were all very pleasant. Too full to finish, we we’re given the rest to take home. All in all a very enjoyable meal.

The staff are great and the food even better. Instead of the duck have the lamb with lettuce or have them both as we do. It’s always enjoyable and you don’t get that horrid bloated feeling you get in other chinese restaurants. We ordered the whole lobster in advance and they cooked it to perfection. The toffee banana finishes it off nicely.

Best Chinese around, food quality is excellent and service is prompt can’t beat it, been going here for years and wouldn’t go anywhere else.

Really disappointed with this place, came here based on good reviews. The food was ok/good, the service really let itself down. It took too long to bring the food out, and we waited 45mins for our bill even after asking for it 3 times. They eventually sent someone over with it who just kept giggling and saying we so busy tonight. I was not impressed It also cost us £40 a head for a two course meal with soft drinks Will not be returning

Introduced to Mr Tangs a couple of years ago, it's our friends local chinese. We've been a fan since our first visit. Great food. The difference is that Mr Tangs food is consistently good, never had a poor dish yet, we are working our way through the menu, so much to choose from, my mouth is watering just talking about their food, the deep fried oysters are to die for as is the crispy pork, i could go on but i'll only get boring. On very rare occasions we've had to wait a tad to long between courses but that's the price you pay when you frequent a very popular restaurant but also a small price to pay for excellence. All in all one of the best places we have been to, Mary looks after you superbly as do the rest of the staff, looking forward to our next visit. If you like chinese food you must give it a try...
