Moutreys in Scarborough

Came here with a hen party big group during busy goth weekend, they very kindly opened up early for our group (planned ahead of time). The staff were phenomenal, friendly and on the ball with their service. They gave us recommendations for where to go out after and we’re so energetic with us. The food came out hot, delicious and fast with very generous portions. You set up our day so well, couldn’t have been better. Thank you

One of the best meals we've had in a long time. The staff were friendly and attentive, without being over the top. The food was delicious. The roasted vegetables with the parmigiana were amazing and the desert and ice cream finished a lovely meal. Would highly recommend.

Had a lovely meal at Moutreys last Thursday with the family. The restaurant was fully booked when we arrived, but the staff were really accommodating and managed to get us a table later that evening up on the balcony – great atmosphere up there. Food and service were both top notch, and the desserts were a massive hit with the kids. Would definitely return next time we’re in Whitby.

Booked for 6 of us and when we turned up, we we're told to stand in the cold for 10 minutes because they had no room for us. The person behind the bar couldn't give us any estimate about how long it would be and was completely ineffective. When waiting outside like idiots, we were waved in by a waitress who then ignored us... Unsurprisingly, we couldn't find any other restaurant that could accommodate us at 8.20pm on an Easter Saturday. Shocking service. We won't be back - and even if we did decide to give The Four Seasons another go, I wouldn't trust that they'd be sensible enough to limit walk ins so that we could have our booked table anyway.

Worst meal I've ever had, only nice thing about the restaurant was the FOH staff who were lovely. Ordered a simple margarita pizza and it was practically inedible. Zero flavour and the dough tasted like cardboard. Charging £12.95 for an Italian pizza that tasted worse than a cheap greasy late night takeaway is diabolical. Heard several other diners complaining about the state of their pizzas whilst I was there. If you want a pizza in Whitby, go to the Dominos down the road

What a great place, staff are lovely and efficient and the food was amazing, there were 8 in our group and everyone enjoyed their meal. The fish dishes were amazing, would definately recommend a visit

Called in today on the off chance and got a table.fabulous service and amazing food.

Whilst the FOH staff were incredibly polite and attentive I must distress that what the kitchen delivered has much to be desired. The Arrabbiata had little to no resemblance, raw garlic leading to an acrid flavour and next to zero seasoning. Similarly with the carbonara which I was (post meal) informed was made with a cheese substitute leading to a stringy texture and flavourless taste. Once again absent of any seasoning. Pepper is apparently non-existent in this kitchen. Overall we were overwhelmed by portion size, yet severely underwhelmed by flavour. I recommend looking elsewhere.

Had a lovely meal at Moutreys tonight. My husband had a starter and we both had a Pizza absolutely gorgeous. The sweets looked amazing but we was both full. The restaurant has been recently decorated and the toilets are lovely We will be back 👍

The girls doing the serving were brilliant, there was only the two of them serving the whole restaurant and they did a fantastic job! The food was excellent. Would 100% eat there again.

Food was amazing this evening. The best food we’ve had here. Pizzas were perfect. Pasta was delicious. The pork steak was the best. I was so impressed I made sure the owner understood how happy our group was and that I intended to leave this positive review ❤️

We've just been to whitby on holiday and enjoyed moutreys that much that we visited twice, the food, staff and the restaurant were all excellent, easy to recommend 5/5

Wow, fantastic all round. This is our go to restaurant in Whitby. Booked a table, same day, for 9pm via the app. That was the only time left but it suited us. On arrival we were advised by a lovely young lady (owners daughter) that there had been a fault with the gas oven so some things were not available. It's a good job they have a full on pizza oven on the restaurant. Oh oh, we were worried as the specials always include a nice fish dish but it seemed that the fish was off the menu. We usually like the fish specials here and were disappointed that they were off. This was relayed to the chef. Gary, the chef /owner came over and asked what we would like, he offered to do some sea bass with roast vegetables and new potato in garlic butter. We decided to share a garlic bread with tomato starter which was very tasty. I went for the meatballs. There was a choice of how spicy you wanted them, I went for medium and they were nicely spicy. The sea bass was amazing. Fabulous service with outstanding food at a fair price. Best restaurant in Whitby, and possibly in Yorkshire. We will be back. Thanks very much.

Oh my god the desserts ! Bloody delicious best we have had for a long time. This is well worth a visit. Staff are friendly, food is excellent, and home made breads what a treat.

A great place, great service and great food.

We have been going to Moutreys for years when we are on our holiday. It never disappoints. Everything is freshly made and there is a great choice for meat eaters and vegetarians. The staff are lovely and friendly. Portion sizes are good, which you need after the walks and days on the beaches. The restaurant is clean and tidy. A lovely atmosphere.

Good service however food and drink was awful. Pizza was really wet like the base was so soggy? Beer tasted like an old dishcloth too. Can't win em all I know.

Amazing little restaurant with a super friendly owner. Gary and his team always make you feel welcome and looked after. Fantastic food with something for everyone. Recently opened back up after some repairs and redecorating, and the place looks fabulous. Possibly my favourite place in Whitby for something to eat. Please get yourself there if you haven’t been before

In Whitby for our 20th wedding anniversary, went to Moutreys for our special anniversary, absolutely fantastic food and service. I had Di Mare seafood pizza and my wife had cajun chicken tagliatelle, which she really enjoyed. My pizza was phenomenal, lots of toppings, very good flavour and a good size, couldn’t finish it. The young waitress was very friendly and attentive. A great dining experience and highly recommended

Dropped in one evening without booking to try and get something other than fish and chips. Seated on a small table near the stairs, but it was fine, not in the way or too busy. Decent wine selection, had a good red for about £30. Two pizzas, the meaty one and the American. Both were good, the meat one came with a serving of delicious ragu to add as you felt fit (was a good way of livening up the crust of the pizza) and the American was well flavoured and particularly garlicky which was unexpected but welcome. Good service and reasonable prices.

We visited Moutreys for the second time, good was gorgeous the cod in Parma ham was divine!!! Service excellent, atmosphere great. Would definitely recommend this restaurant

We have been coming here for 21 years and have always received the same excellent service and superb food. Our children and now grandchildren ocasionally join us and think the same. Well done Gary, Alphie and all the superb staff at Moutrey’s.We have been lucky enough to eat at some of the best restaurants in the world but Moutrey’s is our favourite by far!

Fab place!! Been to Whitby plenty and have missed this place everytime...not sure how or why!!! We had the cod special each, a bottle of Chardonnay and a sharing dessert to finish. This place was brilliant, really buzzing and busy atmosphere, super friendly service. We booked a few weeks in advance via the website ( a credit card is needed to guarantee to this)...we were fine with this as it surely deters rude no shows.😀 Many thanks to all for a fab evening ❤️

Super place to eat in Whitby. Food is outstanding and über delicious, really tasty. I had the spinach and ricotta cannelloni with a mixed leaf salad side. Oh, was it YUM?! I'd have that again. Zingy fresh tasting, all of it. I savoured every bit. There is a small mezzanine and we were up there. A bit cramped, we had to swap tables as bloke next to us was way too close with his back virtually touching our table. A bit intrusive and encroaching but waitress moved us as soon as I mentioned this. Good view from up here too as you have a view of ground floor and all the busy, busy chefs working in the kitchen at the front below. It's bustling and busy and if you dine here you will see why. I'm going back. Very highly recommended indeed.

Visited last night, service was second to none, we both had oil and bread and antipasti to share, the ham was excellent, I had chicken and mushroom pasta the sauce was amazing, I only eat half of it as it was s very generous portion, hubby had the seafood pasta, same again massive portion and he said it was excellent, full of fish. Unfortunately the reason for the 3 rating was he was really ill with dioreah early hours of the morning, he hadn't eaten anything through the day that could have caused this. Really nice restaurant but won't go again.

What a great little find, this restaurant is rustic and has a family vibe about it. The food here is amazing and the portions are massive. We had the meatballs (smoking hot) and Cajun chicken pizza and baked hallumi. The food was piping hot only downside was the wait, but the restaurant was busy when we ate at 2000 hours. I would definitely eat here again

Amazing food and service We sat in the mezzanine with a great view of the kitchen, only issue was that it was a just a little bit smokey from the pizza oven. Will definitely be going again and again, great restaurant, highly recommend 🍷

La comida y el ambiente era genial, sin embargo, debido a que la cocina estaba en el restaurante con lo que ahora parece ser ventiladores extractores insuficientes dejaron la puerta principal abierta toda la noche y una puerta lateral de salida de fuego abierta que estaba junto a nuestra mesa. Estábamos en consecuencia frío en una noche de noviembre. Cerramos la puerta un par de veces solo para que el personal volviera a abrir para “dejar salir el humo”. Tener dos puertas abiertas a un restaurante en una noche de noviembre no es la mejor experiencia. Cuando llegó la factura nos sorprendió que nos hubieran cobrado £ 1 por mayonesa y £ 1 por mostaza. Observando que estábamos pagando £ 30 por un filete, el cargo adicional por los condimentos parece mezquino y no la norma de la industria y más alineado con un cargo de una comida para llevar.

In the past 5 weeks we have booked to have a meal at Moutrey’s and 4-5 hours before they have cancelled our reservation saying they are closed due to staff shortages. Despite sending an email out 24 hours before saying they are looking forward to our visit.

Fabulous food and lovely staff. The cod and calzones especially were exquisite. Decor and toilets could do with an update. Other than that the food was lovely. Would definitely recommend.

This place is amazing, staff so helpful and friendly. The food is great and cooked fresh, you can see the chef making your meal. Had a plain and simple margarita but my mouth is still watering at the thought of it so yummy. Will be making a bee line here next time we're in whitby.

Love this Italian and always visit when staying in Whitby, I have been several times now, and the food is just deliciously outstanding, from lasagna spaghetti Bolognese seafood pasta, pizzas , service very good friendly staff. Definitely recommend a visit here for a great dining experience 🙂

Had an evening meal last night. The staff were very helpful and the was delicious. Garlic bread, amazing. Chorizo burger, so tasty Lasagne, meaty and the pasty was soft and silky. We will definitely be returning

Really looked after by the staff,the food was 1st class,generous portions,especially the pasta dishes,this is the second time we have eaten here,we learned from the first visit that the pasta dish mains are plenty for two and they were happy to let us share,we will certainly visit again the next time we are in whitby

Amazing meal. Turned up on a busy Friday evening and they managed to fit us in. Asked for something that was not on the menu and the chef went out of his way to accommodate this and it was extremely delicious. Exceptional service and welcoming staff. Great quality price to top it off. The chef really cared about the customers experience.

First visit. Really nice inside, superb food. My wife had roast salmon with veg, I had king prawn and anchovy pizza with chilli and far, by far, the nicest pizza I've ever had. The staff were very pleasant and bubbly. When we walked in and approached the kitchen to ask for a table, the really friendly waitress, who dealt with us, was spoken to appallingly by the owner, we were genuinely stunned by how the young lady was spoken to. Apart from that, could not fault anything, the starter, main course and desert was excellent quality. Will definitely be going back next time we're in Whitby

Lovely food but more amazing staff, the two girls waiting on were polite and attentive throughout, made a 5 year olds birthday very happy. Both girls friendly, knew what they were doing and checked in on us at all time, wish everywhere had staff like this! food was very tasty and the girls loved their desert. would definitely recommend for the food and lovely waiting on staff

Do not book this restaurant, we had a table booked for 12 people last night for a 70th birthday, we arrived and it was closed ! No phone call or email to advise us that it was closed !!! Terrible

Lovely food at this restaurant last night. But best of all was the service we received from the servers and the chef who came out to discuss the gluten free options as my daughter is celiac. We felt so confident eating there as they really took time to advise us and the food was all delicious. The chef made a lovely bruschetta adapted with gluten free bread which my daughter really enjoyed. Thank you so much. We will definitely be back.

On a Friday evening, without a reservation, we were lucky to get the last available table. The food, in my case the spicy meatballs, was very good - hot enough, without breaking onto a sweat. The ladies running the joint were all very friendly and talkative, making us feel at home. Recommended, but probably best to book in advance.

We always book Moutreys and it’s never disappointed us yet ! It is a very authentic place lovely atmosphere. Meal was great portion sizes excellent! Good wine list . Staff very attentive and polite . Prices were thought were reasonable. Tip - definitely book otherwise you won’t get in at peak times . Will be returning!

Had a great meal with 5 mates in Moutreys - excellent food, large portions, prompt but relaxed service and a nice ambiance - would certainly return.

Called in for a pre wedding meal. Although they were very attentive. The food was excellent aswell 👌

We had such a lovely meal here on Saturday night. We briefly met the owner of Moutreys having breakfast earlier that day. We didn't know however, until we walked in for our reservation & he recognised us. Very lovely owner who mentioned they were 3x staff members down. It didn't seem that way though! We ordered the chicken wings to start and they were lovely, really decent size and came with 3x dips. We had pepperoni pizza and carbonara for our mains and tasted incredible. We had the tiramisu for dessert and it was probably the best we'd ever had! Absolutely delicious. The staff were so lovely & attentive and nothing was too much trouble. We sat upstairs and had a great view of the kitchen and restaurant. Would highly recommend Moutreys!

Food was amazing. They were a little short on staff but the made up for it with being extra helpful and worked so hard. Genuine Italian menu. Nothing was too much trouble including gluten free recommendations and also cooking up a special with no onions and garlic for one of our party. Would thoroughly recommend. Amazing place and would go again if we cam back.

Clearly using very poor pizza dough and poor quality ingredients. Total waste of a wood fired oven. Avoid.

Seated on the mezzanine. Really hot even with the a/c on. Bread and oil starter was a joke. One tiny bread loaf just plonked on a plate. Both of the pasta main courses were way too big and tasteless. Shame because it's got a good atmosphere.

Huge pizzas from a huge wood fired oven. Great atmosphere and service. Just been back and it's still just as good. Enormous calzone this time, which was delicious. Crispy and gooey. Love it.

Great food, generous portions. Refused as walk-in but immediately booked online and returned 20 minutes later without problem! Is very hot, due to pizza oven. Open kitchen, guys working hard to create fab food.

Food and staff absolutely spot on. We didn't book and we fell lucky as it became so busy as we were leaving. The food was honestly out of this world. The only downside is that it is so so hot in there and the chairs hurt your bum.

We all ate pizzas and they were delicious and served quickly. Service was great with friendly and knowledgeable staff.

A little disappointing. We have been going for years and have always had great food and exceptional service. But tonight they couldn’t really be bothered. We’d booked to eat early at 5.30pm and there were no other diners; the staff were all standing around chatting. My pasta marinara was as great as ever and for my wife I’d asked for sea bass which they had. But as usual she really didn’t want all the vegetables in the mix, just some of them and they couldn’t do it. Maybe they are pre mixed and packed up/frozen weeks ahead in a warehouse somewhere but whatever, we were just disappointed and won’t be going again if they can’t now be bothered. Nothing stays the same, but there’s plenty of choice in Whitby.

What a fantastic meal we had! From our warm welcome when we arrived, to our Waitress, Amy, who was a real credit to the restaurant. My wife ordered the Carbonara and I had the Pollo Arribiata. The portion size was epic, we could easily have ordered 1 meal and shared it! Both meals were delicious. Would absolutely recommend booking a table if you are in the Whitby area!

Visited for a meal with my husband on a Friday night. The food was lovely but unfortunately we had to ask for it to be boxed up to take away as the mezzanine was unbearably hot. So stifling you could barely breathe. Other customers were saying the same thing. They really need to invest in a decent air conditioning unit. The staff were lovely and very apologetic. Such a shame as the food really is good!!

Delicious dinner for two, would reccomended a visit. We had amazing chicken wings to start and the Seabass main was sensational. We will be back to try a pizza and the the dessert I couldn't fit in this time.

Lovely food and lovely staff, parking can be a nightmare so make sure you plan your visit and get parked early or somewhere further away so you have time to walk in. Avoid sitting next to the pizza oven if possible otherwise it will be you who bakes. Would definitely recommend!

Dining Area: Was seated on the mezzanine, which is an area the size of a garden shed with 4 small tables. It was so uncomfortably warm up there that the staff had put a portable AC unit up there, which proceeded to turn off every 20 minutes. Me and my partner were both dripping with sweat and eventually had to head down and pay up early just to leave for some fresh air. Food: Our two pasta dishes took 50 minutes to arrive. The actual food was tasty and a decent portion size. I went for the spicy meatball with linguini dish which was delicious, but in hindsight, if I'd have known about the warmth on the mezzanine, I'd have ordered something else as it was hard to stomach the heat of the dish alongside the physical heat of the restaurant. Service: The staff were very friendly but obviously very run off their feet. Twice I had to chase up a coke I ordered 20 minutes prior. Overheard one of the staff mentioning how they divide the dining area up among 3 or so waitresses usually, but tonight one was working all three! Overall I would go back. £50 for 2 people (3 main dishes and 3 drinks) wasn't a bad price. But next time I wouldn't sit upstairs, and I would hope the staffing would be a bit better.

Went as a walk in, they refused service unless we gave them our phone number - apparently in case there is a fire.

The atmosphere in the restaurant is lovely and the staff were super friendly but the food was a huge let down. The lasagne was tasteless and lacked the tomato based sauce. It was dominated with béchamel so the balance wasn’t right. The pasta with meatballs was also lacking flavour and the tomato based sauce was bland and tasteless. The pasta was also overcooked. It’s sad because the staff were lovely and the place felt welcoming.

We have been coming here for 20 years and will continue to do so. There is a reason this restaurant is still in business. It's good. Yes service was slow last night but there was a post explaining they were missing staff. Absolutely no complaints with the food. The girls waiting on were very busy but always polite and eager to help

I had the Lasagna although it was beautiful I would have preferred a smaller portion with salad or garlic bread. A dish on its own was rather boring. My Hubby had the goats cheese burger it was fabulous .🥰

Food was brilliant what an experiance

We were reccomended this place went early 5 ish so was quiet when we got there, waited a while it was very cold in the building had to put coat back on. Pizzas had no taste and were very burnt round edges couldnt eat those bits. The waitress did ask if we wanted more doing but didnt have time to wait for more doing and others that came out looked similar anyway. Pasta dish was okay not the best taste wise.

Another nice and cosy place in whitby to dine if you prefer pasta or pizza rather than just fish.

Very helpful and friendly waiting staff but food somewhere between poor and average. An hour's wait for a meal isn't beyond good news if the food is excellent but sadly it is lacking. A plain burger that looked and tasted uncooked with an odd flavour and the bun couldn't be swallowed. The boy is currently eating us out of house and home (he's 14) and he left 1/3 of his carbonara - ordinarily his favourite meal. Ceasar salad was acceptable, one of the specials (cod) was enjoyed and the lasagna was poor. Don't get your hopes up if you book a table.

Really good selection of Italian food, the pastas are really good and very good portions. Reservation needed.

Had wings to start which were good, but the Carbonara was very disappointing. The grated "parmesan" was lumpy so was obviously grated then kept in the fridge for ages. The sauce was bland, beige and runny. Was nothing like proper Carbonara, definitely not recommended.

No idea on how it was, as we booked a table for a Saturday evening, but had a phone call saying both cooks had gone down with an illness.... What's the chances of 'both' going down? Just hope it wasn't something they ate 😳... A few disappointed people, that afternoon/evening.... Had a large group trying to get access, as we walked past, so I informed them about what had happened. Goth weekend, so would have been busy....

The restaurant was freezing we had to eat in our coats. Poor service ,tasteless lasagne, the pork with roast potatoes was very underwhelming. Flat white coffee was with out coffee. Not a good experience
