Mount Batten Bar in Plymouth

The food and especially the Sunday carvery is an excellent service apart from the new manager who treated an elderly couple disgustingly when I recently visited at which I was shocked. He could also dress accordingly (like a manager) instead of in shorts.

90s decor and toilets mixed with over priced food you'd expect in a garden centre. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Paid £12.50 for a microwave lasagna. Staff were nice. However, the food was not. Over priced for what you actually get.

visit this place very often and the food is fabulous real traditional pub grub with REAL CHIPS !!! non of this frozen nonsense..... the staff are very professional always a smile from them even when the little old man that sits at the bar is rude to them they just smile and carry on.....

Polite and friendly barman, great selection of desserts with a classic knickerbocker! Delicious other desserts too. Good drinks selection with classic ales on offer.

Edit: 12th March 2025 - in addition to review below: we met friends here for a late lunch today. Once again, the food was very good, and the pub was a lot quieter in terms of people (met at 3.30pm) ɓut it was still difficult to talk due to the loudness of their music playing.....please can you turn it down a little ? Not been here for many years. We did try ringing for about half an hour before leaving home to check they were open, but got no answer. Took a chance and went, to realise upon arrival it was simply really busy and not enough front of house staff. One guy behind the bar (serving drinks and taking food orders) and two girls running around bringing out food and clearing tables. Need more staff at lunchtime if its like that every day. Thankfully, the food was excellent and worth the wait. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals, and would definitely go again....just after the lunchtime rush next time (we left at about 3pm and it had quietened down by then). Only small complaint was the peas were still a bit too hard. Total bill was £48 for the 3 meals and a soft drink each....no starters/desserts...and we left stuffed.

Busy pub with Sunday roast dinner. Seating outside can be overrun with kids at weekends. Reasonable prices and large portions. Staff are friendly and helpful

Staff are always lovely. Its nice to outside when sunny though inside is rather dark and depressings. Food is typical pub food but nice, but definitely not nice enough to justify the pricing of everything. Since been taken over the prices have become ridiculous, this pub used to be a nice easy place to visit and a go to when the sun was shining, now its so over priced myself, family and friends think twice before going as we are unsure if we can afford the drinks. Definitely cant afford/justify buying more than 1 drink here, its that costly. I understand you are an independent business and times are hard but come on, theres a difference between profit and greed. Also - really stupid comment, but no one wants a SOUP BOWL of curry sauce with their chips, respectfully (i wish i was exaggerating). Save yourself and the customer money and charge £1 for a Rankin of sauce for crying out loud ahahahah

Went for a quiet drink after a walk on the breakwater and was served by very pleasant staff and enjoyed the beautiful views out to sea.

We visited ad a family with the family dog and made to feel welcome. We are hoping to be moving in the area, so we thought we would try out the local pub, and we were all pleasantly surprised. I had a half rack of ribs with chips and coleslaw, a pint of cloudy apple cider . The food was plentiful and absolutely mouth-watering. I ended up cleared the plate. Lovely, thank you, we'll be back.

Great place for a Sunday lunch.

It had only just opened on christmas day when I walked in. For some reason I was the only customer the staff didn't say Merry Christmas to which made me feel a bit sad. Also the disabled toilets are first on the left not second on the right. Got a pint of guinness and a pack of crisps and sat outside to rest before walking home.

Friendly staff, spacious bar. Large portions of good quality delicious home made food in a quiet spot with a view across the water. Good parking. Enjoy.

Food was amazing, freshly prepared , generous portions, honestly it tasted good I could not finish my meal but lovely waitress made me a takeaway.

5 of us went for dinner tonight and it was wonderful! Three of us had Roast beef dinner which was plentiful and well cooked. One had Fish and chips and the other Sea bass. Very friendly staff and great service Well done all concerned

Went in to this bar and the food was excellent serving a range of lunches. My two companions had the Roast beef dinners,and I had liver,bacon and mash which was excellent and the bacon was tender. I wear hearing aids which because of the acoustics,made hearing difficult,so had to turn them off. Excellent food,well laid out,and busy,which shows the food was good,and value for money.

Great place to visit for dinner and a drink

If you don't book for a Sunday roast then get there for midday !! Fabulous choice of veg, 4 meats. £12.50. Large venue. Large menu for midweek. Only had the roast so can't comment on rest. But roast was fantastic. You can always get the water taxi over from the Barbican if you don't want to drive.

Excellent service with professional staff, the food was hot, tasty and good value for money. The Bar and lounge area was quiet with other people enjoying the scenery. Lovely afternoon celebrating with friends. Couldn't find fault with anything 5*****

Daily roast for £12.50 any day of the week, perfect!

Had a delicious carvery £12.50. Plenty of choice of vegetables, plenty of meat. All very tasty. Highly recommend. Will be visiting again.

Cajon Chicken and cheese sandwich is awesome.

Worst coffee I've had, there is another cafe one minute walk away that serves very nice coffee so I'd recommend going there instead. Service was terrible and a member of staff was extremely rude to our family. Nice view but disappointing service and food and drink.

Loved this place, food was awesome and massive portion could fault anything. I had seafood linguine and my partner had hunters chicken with real chips both were generous and very hot. Staff were very friendly. See you again next year thank you

APPALLING!! Having been at the pub from 6pm and spending near on £150 on food and drink we were literally thrown out at 9.30pm as the pub was closing! No pre-warning given, no last orders, no drinking up time. Appalling attitude of the bar 'manager' and silent ignorance from the owner at the end of the bar. It completely ruined the evening and my sisters and i were forced to stand outside in a cold and empty car park waiting for our ride home. This pub deserves ALL the negative reviews it gets. All they want is your money with no customer care whatsoever. Whoever takes this pub on will have their work cut out re-building the ruined reputation. If I could give a ZERO rating I would. Fuming and simply appalled beyond words.

Lovely setting but food takes an age to arrive Some friends waited two hours and got their money back as they had to leave Food is nice though and service is good Need to manage orders better and not taken so many so quickly!!!

Lovely pub by the sea with beautiful views. Outside seating and smoking. Parking is available right outside or next to it. Food is great, with most dishes being traditional pub grub. Ham, egg, and chips. Or pie and chips. Lasagne with rice or chips. Etc.. prices are good for the food and worth it. The drinks, however..... we paid £17/18 for 2 JD and coke!!!! Basically, the price of a whole bottle. Gritted my teeth and swore quietly but loud enough that the lady at the bar heard me. Shocking! Go for the view and food and have a soft drink instead.

Enjoyed an evening meal with family members. Reasonably priced too. Atmosphere was very relaxing and families with dogs accepted, no disturbance from the animals whatsoever. You can either sit in or sit outside and enjoy wonderful views of boats on the water.

Sunday Carvery for a family birthday treat. We were looked after by the staff and nothing was any trouble to them. Thank you.

Saturday evening my 80 birthday with family meals were cold sent them back. Not the first time this has happened. Been eating at your restaurant for many years and recommend it to friends and family but never again it was very poor. A very disappointed customer.

Food ordered at bar was absolutely vile. Worst dry burger ever! Carvery was nice and the guy serving in there was so friendly considering the heat in there! Very dated in there.

Lovely place for eating in or outside with spectacular seaview 🌊☀️! Visited recently and were pleased with the new menu, such a great choice now! Chicken kebab was very delicious 🍢🥙

Location location location, so they don't need to worry about the quality of the food really. We ordered two basic dishes, both of them were disappointing. Would only drink here in future.

Love the fact Dogs are allowed, although screaming children need to be given a designated area away from those seeking a relaxing meal!!! Staff have been great.

We went to the Mount Batten Bar to have a bite to eat for our 48th Wedding Anniversary, i have eaten here before and the food was good. Not this time totally gutted. We both ordered belly pork, mash, peas and onion gravy. The crackling was soft and we couldnt eat it, the mash was grey, tastless and had lumps which looked like it was powder mash. I wanted to complain while we were there but my poor husband was so devastated he just wanted to leave. Poor very poor.

Visited this place many times. Weekday and weekends, for brunch, lunch or a drink. Lovely dining area, no food menu on Mondays and Tuesdays, the staff is not always friendly or welcoming. However, food is good and the outdoor dining area is nice and the atmosphere is great. The sea front is stunning every season, especially in summer.

Friendly staff quick service well balanced menu and a nice atmosphere make this a repeat destination. You are unlikely to be disappointed

Food was absolutely shocking, sent chicken Tikka back. Because it wasn't a tikka, a watery chicken stew came back in its place. Worse pub food in Plymouth area. Best avoided. If I could of given 0 star for food I would of. £38 for 2 meals a coke each, waste of money.

Myself and my family, have always had a lovely carvery here, it couldn't be faulted! But our Sunday lunch was very disappointing yesterday, (21/04/24) the beef was very stringy/fatty, and impossible to cut, and had to be left on the plate! In the end, an expensive meal, for just a plate of Veg!

Avoid this place at all costs. Called to ask if family friendly before we made our way there. We were shocked it was pretty much empty on an Easter Sunday. The specials were on a TV screen along with the starters and puddings.. no actual menu to read or give diatery requirements/allergen advice. Tiny bar menu on the table was filthy! Table was sticky and we moved 3 times so got the wet wipes out. Staff rude and unhelpful.. rilled there eyes when I asked where to get cutlery etc as we weren't told we're to get any. Very strange set up.. order drinks at one till And food at another. This wasn't told to us until we ordered drinks and went to order the food. Pretty much ignored and staff stood around chatting and on there phones. Everytime we asked for something it was like we had interupted them. Food took ages... Chips were either soggy or so crispy you couldn't bite them. BBQ chicken was very dry and overcooked coleslaw disgusting! It was definitely a cheap shop brought one. Lasanague was really dry but jelly like and definitely heated a fear few times. Kids burger like rubber. The food was so bad we decided to leave without pudding. On leaving we noticed a very poorly written sign which if I had noticed on arrival, we would have left immediately. Don't advertise your a family place and then have a sign which is borderline rudely written. Over a hundred pound on food which I could have got from lido and it would have been better. How there are open I will never know!!

Lovely food and service, very busy over the weekend but food wasn't a disappointment at all. We had to sit outside as it was too busy inside however plenty of outside space available and under cover in some areas which is a bonus especially when it's raining

Great food and lovely staff. They make you welcome as soon as you walk in. There is plenty of choice on the menu and lots of seating inside and outside.

So we visited on Sunday 18th of February 2024 for a carvery with our children, not only was the food completely un edible the floor was absolutely soaking wet my 5 year old daughter went flying when I pointed this out to a member of staff she brushed it off and laughed like it’s funny that she has fallen over, staff are so rude and unhelpful! I would never ever eat here again very unprofessional and like I said food was disgusting we’ve had better at a fast food restaurant! Not only this on our way out my daughter then went flying on a rock they have by there door on the way in and out clearly there to hold the door open but it was not on this occasion and she went flying over it (it’s not small mind ) and has bruised up all her face because of this, I am absolutely fuming this has happened and could not wait to leave. I would give you 0 stars but that option is not available! So no I do not recommend the food. staff was rude and unhelpful and certainly not suitable. For children. I’ll expect a response from this mount batten and I will take this further ! Death trap! and disgusting food!

Very dissapointed as from our last visit in the summer. Our party of 4 had Fish and chips x2 and fish pie x2. I think it was Cod but not sure. An oblong piece, not fillet shaped at all. Soggy chips but the peas were ok. No interaction with the waiteress, she seemed bored. The general consensus between us, was not good value for money, with a policy of 'Charge high, Serve inferior'. Will not be returning anytime soon. Such a shame as it is a magnificent location Brian G

This is my go to bar when eating out, great staff, awesome food and brilliant views especially in summer. Great location, you can use sea taxi from Barbican I think it runs more in summer..

It's a good bar especially for food. Socially not. The food and location is why people go. Very nice food good service and at good prices. The portions are large and should fill you. There is outside space for seating and dogs are welcome inside and out. We go here quite often and are never disappointed. The Mountbatten quay is 100 yards away to walk off the meal and there is parking available.

Didn’t book. Busy Sunday lunchtime. The pub has sensibly split the bar area into first come first served and restaurant area for reservations. Carvery had good choice and was good value.

Great food, not expensive. Lovely location.

Being the Kids first day back at school, the wife and I felt like going somewhere for a nice quiet meal. But to our shock they no longer serve food on Monday's and Tuesday's, why? To give the staff a rest, well that just says you need more staff. As a result we went somewhere else spending nearly £40. How they can turn business away I have no idea but can't see them staying in business if they keep this up.

Busy pub, ordered a ploughman's which cost 12 50 and it was terrible. Poor quality ingredients, overpriced and not that great. Looking at other people's food their portions were enormous but it's pub grub. Not particularly healthy

Average food, nice seating outside in the sun was rather spoiled by smokers (no obvious divide between areas for antisocial smokers and healthy people).

Nice bar for a drink with a decent view of Mountbatten pier and the fort. Arrived late in the evening so not in time for food.

Felt really uncomfortable bringing my child here he wasn’t being badly behaved or anything, just your average 2 year old, felt really unwelcome. Service wasn’t great food was ok but a bit pricy.

Fantastic food , best gammon egg and chips had in long time..nice clean place , only thing that lets place down ,is serve excellent food then have to use really cheap sauce sachets..,the cost of quality,out ways cheap not good tasting .. Apart from that, definitely recommend..

Big portions and very good quality. Traditional desserts are a big plus. Banana split is just one of them.

Went at the end of a long day in the local hospice, so to be fair we didn't really notice the atmosphere. The staff were attentive and the food was lovely. Would recommend it if you are visiting the Barbican where it's just a short water taxi away.

Plenty of space to sit. Non-alcoholic drinks available Quite a wait for our meal which was fresh and tasty. Worth the wait. Slightly overpriced No table service which was difficult as all three of us are disabled

Arrived without a booking but was seated straight away. Our food arrived in good time and was both very tasty and generously portioned. Prices were good and all in all a very pleasant evening.

Delicious food, always high quality and good sized portions. So far I've tried fish & chips, roast dinner, burgers, paninis, all lovely and filling! Drinks are a little expensive (beer and cider are £5-£6 range), but it seems to be that way in a lot of places. Nice location and staff are friendly. Would recommend!

Came here for a drink with the family. It's ok, was a bit busy but not majorly. A lot of tables that needed cleaning. Bar staff don't seem overly happy either.
