Moti Mahal in Kensington and Chelsea

Here you can immerse yourself in authentic Indian food. For those who truly appreciate Indian cuisine, avoiding those tourist oriented bland "Indian style" restaurants. Discovered Moti Mahal some 10 years ago and come back here every time I'm in London. Never been disappointed.

Disaster! After all these years the Moti Mahal has gone alcohol-free. I have no idea why. It’s such a shame. Avoid.

Went here for my sons 16th birthday with all our family too. Staff were super friendly and quick to provide help when needed. Was our first time visiting and has quite an intimate feeling - as it’s only a small restaurant. Food was of a good standard - my wife thought it was the best chicken tikka masala that she’s ever had (it’s what she has wherever we go so she knows how it should taste). The food was not overly hot spice wise - it was just very tasty! No alcohol sold so popped to the local Tesco and bought a few drinks for the table. Saved a bit of money to be honest - came out at just over £20 a head for the food. Can’t go wrong with that price in that location in my opinion.

We were cold, hungry and looking for some wholesome food and we weren’t disappointed! We chose chai tea and lemon ginger tea and it was made with dried and fresh herbs respectively. Our kids can be fussy and the staff had a very pleasant manner with them, nothing was any trouble. The food was hot fresh and tasty and we all felt fully satisfied. Good sized portions and helpful, caring staff. A little gem in Kensington.

Great food with lovely staff! The staff was really kind. When we went it was pretty quiet, so they took the time to chat with us, which was nice! The food was really nice and they made some good suggestions! The portions where perfect and we where really full after our starter and main course.

Hidden just by south Kensington station is a gem of a curry house! Moti Mahal serves amazing Indian dishes with wonderful caring staff! We had our kid tagging along who loved the plain daal (lentil) - felt like eating at home! Their chana curry is one of the best we have ever had and don’t forget to get those crunchy veggie samosas! Will not disappoint - family run with family care! Thank you Mohammed and team!

Whilst visiting the area, we stumbled across the Moti Mahal in Glendower Place, SW7, a neat well presented restaurant serving fresh well prepared Indian food. This small unimposing restaurant prepares delicious Indian food. No alcohol is available but they allow you to bring in from beer or wine from the nearby Tesco

we enjoyed our lunch with lovely Indian dishes. The service too is quick and friendly. Highly recommended.

Just dropped in on the spur of the moment, bit concerned as we were the only 2 people in there, but it was probably the best Indian food I have had in this country. Simply suberb.

We truly enjoyed our meal here. We have eaten here before on another visit and it continues to be wonderful. Our waiter was perfect and fun to share a brief conversation. I started w t Dall, as I am on a Dall quest, and this did not disappoint. It was smooth and perfectly seasoned. My husband had a samosa and was equally happy. We both chose lamb, the shank for me and Pasanda for him. While very different, they were equally delicious. Great sauce, perfect spices, succulent and tender. I have never been disappointed here. And the rice! Not sure what is in here, so fragrant and delicious! A truly memorable meal. Just a note, they do not serve alcohol but feel free to bring your own. They will provide you w t appropriate glass and gladly open your bottle.

Just good enough, not high level. Food was tasty but quite small portions. Garlic naan saved the dinner. Nice tables outside.

We chose the Moti in preference to the other Indian restaurants because of the excellent Covid protection in place, the place is quite small, but partitions have been put in place between every table - great to see. When we looked at the menu there were no alcoholic drinks, I asked the owner if this was correct and he just said yes. So, with a bit of disappointment soft drinks were ordered. Nothing was on the Web page or in any other reviews left. I was then annoyed when several other diners arrived with their own drinks, why hadn't we been told that this was okay to pop round the corner to Tesco's? The food was nice, particularly the Chicken Balti which was really flavoursome.

Decided to check this restaurant out as a part of the discount scheme going on and was pleasantly surprised. Wholesome punjabi food that I enjoyed, the papri chaat however was bit dry and hard to bite. Nevertheless, still good overall.

I'm so happy this restaurant is back in operation! I missed the food during this crazy period of Covid. I only eat and take my friends,family or colleagues to this establishment, because of the tasty food, quality and the love the chef puts into the individual dishes. Most of all, the staff are friendly and attentive. Top marks for hygiene and food safety. Recently, we had our curry fix and I was very impressed with the Covid safety measures implemented. It makes me feel comfortable and confident that my group and I are safe and the Management are taking the correct precautions to ensure customer and staff safety. I recommend this restaurant as one of the best eateries I've dined at in London.

I wanted to have an Indian dinner in London and dined here based on recommendation. Service was slow but good and the food was very good. We ordered Chicken Tikka, Aloo Gobi, Garlic Naan and Raita. I was hoping for something special but this dinner was similar to Indian food in a good Indian restaurant in the US.

I should have known when the mint sauce came out. The food tasted nothing like an Indian, it was bland with no flavour, the mushroom rice overcooked abd pair mushrooms, the chicken chewy, meat samosas with no meat. When we mentioned it the waitress and owner just smiled and took away our barely touched plates and presented us with the bill.Avoid at all costs.

This place is outstanding. I have very specific food need.....’kin hot! They have nailed it. I work here about eight weeks of the year and so rely on reliability, and they have never failed yet!

Ate here for lunch, dinner was OK. We got the Naan and the chicken Tikka masala ; it was not very spicy and that's OK. Price was 70 pounds for 4 people, compared to a night before at an Italian restaurant where it was 90 pounds I think it was OK. Staff very friendly. I would like to say I will come back again but since in London there are hundred of restaurants I don't have enough time and money to visit the same place twice :) but it's a good restaurant.

A very average Indian meal. Nothing particularly bad about the food but it wasn’t memorable. The service was good.

Not very good. Indian food usually is very tasty, this food was not tasty at all. To add up, prices were very high to the amount of food and its quality. Very dry chicken, and tasteless food over all. Also, the decoration is very basic and the place is very lonely. I would not recommend. I love Indian food but did not like this place’s food.

Il locale facilmente meriterebbe i 5 punti ma ci sono delle cose da migliorare, tutto sommato una prima esperienza indiana più che piacevole. Il locale è carino, un po' retrò ma ben curato e pulito, anche i bagni ordinati e puliti. La sala ospita al massimo 20 persone. Entrati ci ha accolti una signora forse cinese, estremamente cordiale; dopo averci portato il menù prende l'ordinazione il signore indiano, è una persona gentilissima. Il menù è variegato e in alcuni punti non intuitivo meglio chiedere consiglio. Le porzioni non sono abbondanti quindi se amate mangiare in quantità preparatevi a ordinare diversi piatti, il portafogli ne risentirà. Ovviamente proverete sapori particolari con abbinamenti per la nostra cucina distanti, mi è piaciuto tutto anche se l'agnello con il cocco lo eviterei davvero.. Il conto, salato.

I went to have dinner last week with a few, business clients who fancied some authentic Indian food. We came across this restaurant. On first impressions, the decor and ambiance was, clean, modern and stylish. The Manager greeted us and showed us to our tables. We ordered quite a few dishes and the food was amazing. Everything was fresh and delicious. A 10 minute wait but considering we ordered at least 17 dishes in total. The mocktails were also lovely. Prices are reasonable considering its Kensington. I would highly recommend. Good portion size also.

Tasty, wide choice of dishes in comfortable setting. Mix of traditional and nouveau cuisine, no licence so bring your own - Tesco mini market nearby has good beer/wine in chiller cabinets.

Got a late night take away of onion bhaghee plain nan bread and a chicken chilli masala. It wa so so good and all for £15. I loved it!

We took a chance and tried the restaurant. It turned out to be a great all-around experience! First of all, the service was polite and prompt. Second, the food was delicious! We ordered the Methi Gosht Bhuna and the Sag Paneer, both of which were prepared really well. Third, the ambience turned out to be quite lively, especially because of a group visiting from France who was obviously happy to be there. I know it was just a coincidence, but it added to our good mood. Oh, and the location in South Kensington is easy to get to, with lots of other things to see and do around it.

Tuve mi primer curry cuando tenía doce años. 1970 en Exeter. Fue grandioso. Desde entonces, he comido en cientos de restaurantes indios, casi en cualquier otro lugar que no sea India, ya que todavía no he llegado. Gracias a esta comida, viajar a India acaba de llegar a la cima de mi lista de deseos.

Nos alojamos en el hotel Kensington y noté que este restaurante estaba en una calle lateral y me pareció que era agradable y acogedor. La comida era deliciosa, estaba fresca y bien presentada. El servicio fue excelente, nos sentimos agradables y cómodos y el personal amable y atento sin ser dominantes. Los precios eran muy razonables, especialmente teniendo en cuenta la ubicación. No servían alcohol, pero hay un supermercado a un minuto de distancia, así que si quieres traer el tuyo, serías bienvenido. Buena comida, buen servicio excelentes precios, definitivamente recomendaría!

A small side street restaurant just a couple of minutes walk from South Kensington underground station and the Natural History/ Science and V&A; museums.

The food was fantastic. The staff were very attentive and pleasant. Well priced. It was a brilliant evening. Chicken briyani-brilliant Chicken Korma-excellent Sag Prawn-delicious Bridal Bhaji- yummy Lamb dansak-very nice. Will definitely come back!

Me and my friends were looking for a place where to eat something before going to the V&A; museum. The pub nearby was full so we got here. It was the right choice. Food is amazing and people very smart, fast and kind to us. We had a main course plus bread and water and we spent 18 £.

Ate here after attending a play. The food was pretty good and the prices reasonable. The service was very good. The restaurant itself is very stark with no hint it serves Indian food.

Moti Mahal is usually our first dinner upon landing in London, despite a 15-20 minute walk from the Earl’s Court area. We enjoy the indian food here more than any other indian restaurant in the NYC area. The servers are usually attentive and the food is tastily consistent. Our go-to order is the chicken tikka masala and chicken tandoori. We tried a new dish this time, the saag paneer which was also very good.

Food was good, portions small. Not too pricey which was good for the amount you received. No alcohol, too bad, but you can bring your own

Subimos de Poole en Dorset por un par de días. Busqué el restaurante indio más cercano a nuestro hotel y descubrí esta pequeña joya. La comida era de 5 estrellas y soy muy particular con mis curries, el chef lo hizo a la perfección. Tanto mi padre como yo teníamos platos muy limpios. El servicio también fue muy atento y nada era demasiado problema. En general, una comida fabulosa.

I didn’t like the food here at all. First of all the portion was very small and pricey!!!! Worse Butter Chicken i had in my life. Lentil soup was acceptable. Lamb biryani was below average. Definitely not again.

Da unser Hotel nur einige Gehminuten entfernt lag, nutzten wir die Gelegenheit im Moti Mahal zu lunchen. Kleiner, sauberer und etwas spartanisch eingerichteter Betrieb. Die von uns bestellten Gerichte, Butter Chicken und Korai Gosth fanden wir lecker. Der Garlic Naan hingegen war für unseren Geschmack etwas zu teigig. Da wir in dieser Zeit die einzigen Gäste waren, war die Bedienung nur auf uns konzentriert, sprich sie war ausgezeichnet. Das Moti Mahal können wir mit gutem Gewissen weiterempfehlen.

Every time that I visit London and I have time, I come back as I think it is one of the best in the South of England (for me Leeds and Bradford are the capitals of curry in Britain). The dishes taste fresh and the waitress is very polite. The portions became smaller with time and they do not have a license for alcohol any more, although you can bring your own.

After weeks of fancy food we were craving a hit of spice and went off the trip advisor recommendations (discovering the restaurant was literally across the road from the Ampersand where we stay!)

Teníamos ajo chili king, un vegetal gambas principal Rogan Josh principal nan, pan de ajo y arroz. Had samosa, onion bhaji and Indian chai. All of the dishes were below average. They were pre cooked and reheated. The host was surly and we decided to leave. This was in sharp contrast to dishoom where the food was very good and the service exceptional.

The food was excellent and the staff was very helpful accommodating my sons food allergies. On top of it my daughter wasn’t feeling well and we had to leave and they quickly packed up our food for us. Thank you!!

Superb meal tonight, just what was needed on this snowy London evening. Without a doubt the best nan ever. Delicious Tika Masala and the spinach/potato dish was both fresh and tasty. Staff were attentive and pleasant. No alcohol but watched someone dash out for a bottle of wine that was happily opened by staff. Will be back when next in the U.K.

My friend and I come here for lunch to celebrate our birthdays each year. Even though we know the waitress, the service is always exemplary and the food superb every visit.

Muy buen servicio y el gusto de la comida deliciosa. Esta es la primera vez que el comedor en el restaurante indio, y me pareció que la comida era estupenda y el camarero tenía una sugerencia muy buena.

Este restaurante lo encontramos de paso y nos dió buena impresión. El servicio y la atención prestada fueron muy buenos. La comida nos pareció muy corriente y esperábamos algo mejor. Algunas opiniones indicaban opiniones muy favorables pero no nos pareció tanto.

My dad is living in Chelsea right now and insisted he take me here while I was visiting, and I can see why! Some of the best Indian food I've ever had. Light but flavorful sauces, great service.

Found it online looking for an Indian restaurant within walking distance to the Royal Brompton Hospital on New Year's Eve.Lovely little restaurant, nice decor and atmosphere. Amazing food (if slightly smaller than usual portion sizes) and wonderful service.Overall had a really good evening there.

Just stumbled across the Moti. Excellent meal and service. Our only reservation is that it's a small restaurant with little to absorb sound. When we were there it was about one third full but already noisy.

We were walking down the street ready to pop in anywhere. Am I ever glad we picked this place. The service was friendly and prompt. The food is delicious. We have a large Indian community in Toronto, but this is much better than what's on offer there. When they say "hot", they actually mean it here. Heavenly. If I lived in London, I'd be a regular.

Just off Old Brompton Road, close to South Ken tube. Fairly small with not too flashy decor - a bit of brass around the ceiling, some light wood around the bar but overall fairly subdued and warm and a pleasant change from the flashy, cold Indian Modern. Nice greeting from the staff who were reasonably attentive and friendly - the one non-Indian was particularly nice. It was almost full and they handled things pretty well.The menu is about right in range of options. Portions are reasonable but not large. A meal for one was about right for one person without dessert. The food was nicely presented and quite tasty without being special. Overall it tends to light spice rather than hot. The bill came to 76 pounds for 3 with drinks, n dessert and one person eating lightly.All in all a dependable, nice place for a simple evening at reasonable prices for the area.

We were looking for some Indian food close to our South Kensington hotel, and gave this a try. We did our usual thing of sharing a few dishes, and some of the vegetarian ones had the option of smaller side-dish portions (so we sampled more than usual). We were impressed with the flavours, and the spice levels were just as we ordered. Along with a couple of beers, this topped some of our most recent Indian meals elsewhere for taste and value.

Stopped off here as we were looking for somewhere comfortable to eat in South Kensington. Good menu, efficient service and overall, a nice curry. Certainly not the best I have ever had, but we left with full bellies and it didn't break the bank!

We took a chance and walked into the Moti Mahal near the South Kensington station. It turned out we made a good choice The restaurant has a full menu and we ordered one of the three course combinations. There is nothing fancy here. Just good food served by friendly staff. The only negative was a group of noisy diners behind us talking loudly on their mobile phones and generally being rude. Once they left, all was good.

We wanted something to eat prior to a show in the west end and famcied a curry. We saw the moti mahal and went in, i thought it was funny that it was empty. We sat down and ordered 2 popadoms and they came with the sauces which we wern't told were an extra £2 20. We also ordered 2 x 660ml bottles of cobra....when they arrived already poured they didn't even reach the pint mark on the glass. Both of our curries had an awful taste and we didn't eat them however when we complained they deducted one off the bill and said an extra 20% off aswell.....but so did everyone as it was an offer but we still had to pay nearly £6 service charge...what a rip off....my advice is go somewhere else

Called in on way home for meal. Warm welcome and tasty food. Chose banquet for two because we were too lazy to plough through large menu and were not disappointed.

Went for a business lunch. The restaurant was quiet at 13:00hrs, there is parking out side on the other side of the street for a few vehicles.I had the Chicken Tika starter and Chilli Fish main, some rice and Naan. Very nice food.Good service although a very small restaurant, suspect it would be full with 50 people in it! I shall be going back

Just 2 minutes walk from the South Kensington Tube station, it's a small place with just 38 seats. I thoroughly enjoyed a fragrant Chicken Tikka Masala with a side of Sag Aloo and a small Cobra beer. Heaven. Some of the best service I've experienced in London. Run, don't walk to this establishment.

Went here with low expectations after being at the Thali nearby on Friday. As a couple from the NE of England we love an Indian meal. The Thali on Friday left us wondering if we'd get a nice one in close proximity to our hotel. This told us we could, lovely food and great value. Service lovely and friendly too well done to the staff

Found this place about 16 months ago when on a course for work.Returned again with my wife on a short break and really enjoyed the meal.If in the South Kensington area it's well worth a visit, the tube station is literally 100 metres away.

The restaurant is in an area where there are plenty of eateries (being a short walk from Sth. Kensington tube) and an evening meal will here usually will hit your pocket quite hard. The food at the Moti Mahal is good and for the area offers fair value for money. Service was attentive, friendly and efficient. Drinks and food were served without delay. The interior is comfortable and typical of many Indian restaurants. Probably worth booking if you plan to eat here other than early in the evening.

The food was very tasty. The portion sizes were perfect, you can split an order of rice between two people. The peshwari naan was delicious. The prices are very reasonable. They have a varied menu. Friendly service.

We were in London for the day and happened upon this restaurant. When we went in we got the last table which for us was a good sign that it was so busy. We were not disappointed. The staff were friendly and catered to any needs we had. The food was very good - I usually have lamb which can sometimes be a bit chewy - but the lamb dhansak was excellent and made a bit more saucy for me. The other half had a chicken vindaloo which probably wasnt as hot as he would have liked but he also said his chicken was lovely. Would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant.

We read a strong review of this restaurant in our guide book, and decided try it, although from our hotel it was a bit of a walk. We were not disappointed, in fact had one of the best South Asian meals we can remember. Highly recommend chicken jalfrezi. Located in a very pleasant Kensington neighborhood that felt far away from the tourist throngs even in mid summer. So we really enjoyed the walk.
