Mother Hubbard’s in Barnsley

The fish and chips are awesome. Good value for money. I always sit in. The staff bring the food to you. Love it.

Worst experience ever. First of all met a very rude lady at the till. We placed dine in order, and when we went to the place. Kept waiting at the till for long and no body bothered to cater. Although it was not busy at all at around 09:15pm but the lady at till completely ignored us. When we asked for the food she rudely handed over food with all food boxes open, cold food , no tray, uncovered, no forks, no hand towel. When asked for hand towels she completely ignored. Right after eating the food I had a huge vomit. I ordered fish burger and cheese burger. Definitely it was not fresh. I really hope the management does some workshops to train till staff how to deal with customers and I hope the food is fresh next time as it used to be in the past.

They don't even do pickled onions

The food was nice. Service could have been better because there was me and my mate plus one customer prior yet you forgot I ordered a kebab

That abomination of a chips which comes with fish needs to change. That is not chips, that is a cardboard. Not a food.

There are no disabelet toilets in here, not disabled friendly at all, and it spoils it for a good place like this as I love this place alot it as the nice jacket potatoes here and good salad and toppings

Go to the chip shop every time we come to Barnsley which is every week or so the food is fabulous but every time we go the toilet is Always locked and they say it is broken i feel sorry for the girls that work there because they have to put up with unhappy customers they say the manager is the one that shuts the toilet intentionally because of night time dwellers that are out drinking if you are providing food and drink they you have to provide a toilet not very happy shame on you manager

Absolutely horrible staff, they have been charging extra because we are college students, refused refunds when they were being rude with us. Muttered under their breaths about us Complained because THEY got the order wrong Horrible staff horrible environment

Sadly the last time I went in I stood 10 minutes - the cook kept looking at me but no communication and service staff never appeared - so I left !

Had the smoked fish & it was delicious. Young lady check how I wanted my order serving instead of it just being dished up for take away. Very happy

Ordered a doner kebab after asking if they sold them and they replied yes. On being served I was given a tray full of doner meat and nothing else. When asked the cashier she said that was a doner kebab. Asked to speak to manager and was told he never some in. Online ordering gives loads of options on kebab products. Only plus side was the doner meat was nice.

Chips tasted like they were done in old fat, fish was okayish, table hadn't been cleaned properly from the last guests, the friendly service didn't weigh up yhe deficits.

Wasn't worth the hype ...overpriced

Food is delicious, atmosphere not the best with loud radio music. The staff do not smile or care, they slam your food on the table so it goes everywhere, curry was half empty not a full portion at all, service is terrible and all they do is stare at you like they have no soul, absolutely covered in makeup too. Not a very family friendly place.

New Management and really going downhill.... Stale chips soggy batter and bored staff..... Avoid shame as used to be decent

Went in To take away. Ignorant who work there. £9 for small chips, 3 small fish bites & a curry sauce? Received 2 small fish bites & 1 potato fritter & 1 curry and the chips

This is a very welcoming place comfortable and clean and the food was great.

Reason I only gave 2stars for the food was the batter on the fish was over cooked and the chips were barely warm,let's hope things can improve.

The staff that served us did not seem like she wanted to be there at all, dropped the card reader on the counter then signed and rubbed her. Partner asked if they were “firey fish bites” and she said “I don’t know what you mean” so we had to specify firey meant spicy She could not understand a simple structured sentence and had to repeat or at least 3 times. I am not being dramatic, out of all the staff, we’ve only ever encountered 3 that actually seem happy to be at their job Please choose your employees better since they clearly don’t want to be here.

Bad customer service. The cashier didn't greet us and she was miserable and impolite. The pie was dry, flaky and 90% pastry and the fishcake was stale. Wouldn't recommend.

Have had delivery from here on several occasions and normally really big portions and good food. Last night was really poor.. Fish bites portion size had halved but still same price and they were basically just big scraps... lots of batter and hardly any fish.. really disappointing after past orders and will think definitely think twice before ordering again

10,10 old school value and perfect portion........highly recommend the spicy Irish sauce

Eat in or takeaway chippy. Excellent good value fish, chips and mushy peas, with very generous portions, when our group of 9 turned up, and no complaints from anyone. Well worth a visit.

Had the misfortune of having fish and chips at this place,really terrible. They seal the box up and then you have to open it to put in salt and vinegar, very oily and chips had lots of green at the sides cheap and tasteless. Never again.

Ordered and collected our food when we returned my order was missing. We were then told that they wouldn’t deliver it out to us we had to then come all the way back to collect. When I asked for a refund we were told that we had to come into the shop for a refund. The lady on the phone was extremely rude, will not be ordering again and will NOT be recommending on to anyone!!!

Amazing food definitely worth the visit

My local favourite was closed so tried here and was so disappointed. The chips had no taste, fish bites were weird and full of grease. I had fish bites chips and curry sauce partner had sausage and chips. We will not be coming here again.

A great English experience!!! A true chippy!!! Being American we have nothing that even compares to this. I've been to many other Chip Shops throughout the UK, but this was hands down the best. The food was phenomenal. The service was great and the atmosphere was just the icing on the cake!!! The decor was perfect, all the way down to the Friday night drunks. I highly recommend this restaurant!!!

5 people in chitchen and just 1 work every where, long whiting and food is have oil taste

I was sceptical about the fiery fish burger but it surprised on many levels. They fish was well cooked, tender and evidently marinated in a tandoori style rub. The best part was the brioche bread though... always a barometer of a quality sarnie. Well done!

Great fish and chip restaurant in the centre of Barnsley.

Was a bit hungry and had some time to kill so I stopped in for some chips. They were £1.99 for decent chips. Friendly service.

Only called in for a chip butty and it was massive. Extra large bread cake with plenty of chunky chips. Very nice! Clean place and seems value for money. Staff are lovely.

Our food arrived last minute. We had chips missing from our battered sausage order and this was the portion for £11 fish and chips. Everything was soggy. All the batter was soggy- on fish, sausage and onion rings.

There are many options in the menu my favorite is the spicy fish and chips, red color fried fish cubes (forgot the name) Staff is wonderful and the service is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Absolutely s**t service placed a £45 order 3 kids 2 adults for the food to come missing 1 meal only to be told I had to ring back in an hour and half to talk with the manager kids meals ridiculous chips with black inside and tinned teas full of water absolute p**s take will never eat hear again that's for sure

Just had it for the first time tonight the fish was greasy and the chips were dry and tasted like they had been sat under the heat for hours. Customer service was non existent too!

Called in here on a Sunday after a day out in Holmfirth & thought some lovely fish & chips would be a fantastic meal to end the afternoon with. Unfortunately, my regular fish & chip shop was closed so searched for one that was open. Mother Hubbard came up so headed for it. Got dropped off by partner, who parked up the street to wait for me, ironically the same street of another town centre fish & chip shop. The inside of mother Hubbard is clean & modern looking with a seated area to the left of the counter. I ordered 2 regular fish & a portion of chips & was shocked to see the price of £16.20 for this. But I thought well it's a town centre establishment so let's see what I get for the money. I waited for the food to be cooked which is no problem as the food is freshly cooked & to order. After an appropriate time the food came in 2 rectangular cardboard cartons inside a plastic bag & I thanked the lady who served me, who was polite & efficient, to go home to eagerly eat this meal. I was disappointed with the amount of chips but they did taste o.k but were a bit anaemic looking. I thought the fish tasted o.k too & they were slightly bigger than my local chip shop one's but they weren't anything special to warrant the price. My partner & I were struggling to understand why this meal cost £6 more than my local chip shop (Dodworth road chip shop 400yds away from Mother Hubbard) Yes the fish was slightly bigger but the chip portion was a lot less. Yes Mother Hubbard was open on a Sunday & is a town centre business which is open a lot longer during the day & is next to the bus station but still it is a big price difference. I've probably answered my own question there but this makes Mother Hubbard a chip shop only to use when you're in the town centre after having a drink. There's no way I would actively go there instead of my local chip shop for the quality or quantity of the food & I'm sure other local chip shop users would probably feel the same way.

Dough was about an inch thick an all sloppy chips was as white as paper an tasted like soil an all tho it’s cooked fresh that fish was not fresh had a frozen taste an it’s not cheap won’t be going again that for sure few chips an two fish £18.00 just under 3 sides cost nearly a fiver disappointed
