Called in with a group of friends after a walk. We treated ourselves to a cappuccino and a chocolate orange brownie. The coffee was superb, beans supplied by local roasters(voyager coffee from Buckfastleigh) the chocolate brownie was the best I have ever had. We were greeted by the owners who told us they were shortly updating the menu and the name of the establishment. The Toilets were clean and in good condition.

We visited this establishment for breakfast with our family of six whilst holidaying in the local area. The service was friendly and efficient and the breakfast was fresh, and delicious. The children enjoyed hot chocolates and I really enjoyed a dairy free cappuccino made with oat milk replacement. Our daughter is gluten and dairy free and they accommodated her with gluten free sausages. We will definitely be back. Our son enjoyed playing chess whilst we waited for our breakfast. Great atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit. Worth knowing if they don’t have what you fancy on the menu they are open to requests e.g my son fancied a bacon sandwich and they kindly made one.

I have been to Moorish twice since it changed hands. The tapas has gone and instead a simple but appealing lunch menu at a fair price. They are also busy with people having coffee and cakes (which looked nice). The lunch menu consists of various sandwiches, jacket potatoes and a daily soup. They offer half a sandwich and soup which you see occasionally and for me is a brilliant idea. On both occasions we have had the soup and sandwich option. The soup has been piping hot and extremely well made. I could not fault what we had. I think however there are some teething issues which are due to new ownership and I am sure these can be sorted. The young girl and lad serving lacked welcoming warmth. It took 12 minutes to get a glass of tap water and the food around 18 minutes. For a simple menu and not a packed cafe this seems a touch long. The lad was sent out to buy coleslaw from the co op but it is down as homemade slaw. The granary bread offered was seeded not granary. I am being picky!! I think the owners just need some feedback to get them going in a good direction. They have all the makings of a great cafe and as the food is so good I look forward to returning.

I was recommended to go to Moorish on my visit to Ashburton, sadly it has been taken over by new people, all of the charm has vanished along with any good will I suspect. Lukewarm weak coffee. Appallingly slow service and it would have been nice to butter my own tea cake. It was expensive for what it was. It was a pleasant room but due to poor service and quality of coffee i would not return. Tragic demise - how ever there are plenty of other fab places to eat in this delightful town so take full advantage of them and avoid this one!

I was looking forward to eating at this restaurant, recommended by a friend, but was very disapointed. I ordered four tapas dishes, two each, and the tortilla was flat and unappetising. I have cooked better myself and eaten home-made ones cooked by friends better than the one served to me. There were four meatballs for £3.75 which means they were a pound per meatball. The best tapas were the patatas cooked in their skins with mayonnaise. Still expensive for a small bowl of chips , but the worst thing was the sticky pork ribs that tasted like very old meat. I complained but nothing was taken off the bill which came to £25.00 for lunch for two! The service was o.k. but not particularly remarkable. I wouldn't go out of my wy to go there again but I did think the atmosphere was casual, which could be relaxing, especially if one was in charge of children for example.

Unexpectedly in Ashburton for lunch and tried Moorish. It provided a really good light lunch with attentive service and food that was obviously freshly prepared. Prawns were excellent and the soup was good. It has a short but well thought out menu which is extended by a few more dishes in the evening. Went for an evening mid-week meal with family. Relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. Young person serving was smiley and friendly.Ordered some starters, drinks and tapas. My drink arrived barely chilled, with one block of ice, no lemon. Not the best way to serve a diet coke.Starters including dips were OK but nothing that stood out. No napkins provided so ended up dripping oil from the dip variously on the table. Tapas were OK but somehow lacking and did not live up to the exotic title of the place, which hinted at something special,Ordered desserts which took an age to arrive, so long that we had well finished our coffees.Waiter person seemed a bit spaced out and was not very attentive even though there were only 3 tables to serve. Quite expensive to boot, doubt we will be going back for a main meal. We did enjoy coffee there some time ago, which is what inspired us to give it a go.

Tried this restaurant for, an evening meal, as someone had said it was good at a lunch time. Did not know what to expect. The restaurant was quite quiet for a Friday night although we were eating quite early (7pm). The menu had a reasonable selection of tapas (£4 to £5 pounds each) and three main courses (about £12). We were not sure what we would be getting so we ordered 9 tapas and one main course. What a pleasant surprise. The meals were delicious and very enjoyable. Everyone enjoyed them. The drinks were the same as for most restaurants with locally brewed beer on offer. The dessert menu did not have a lot on it but again what we had was very nice. This is a small bistro restaurant in the centre of Ashburton. Nothing too remarkable about the decor or service. The food selection seemed good - bits for vegetarians - but the portions were tiny! A carrot salad was a little mound of grated salad with some toasted pitta (which didn't look homemade) for just shy of a fiver! The main course butternut squash looked like a small starter but was £12. Really disappointing. This is a good place for sharing lunches and slow, gossipy coffees. It's worth considering the specials and their orange cake is to die for.

We were to go on a cookery course at Ashburton Cookery School (really fab) and ate the night before the commenced the course at Moorish. On the cookery course sat next to people who have had a decent meal at Moorish, but we can honestly say that we have never had such bad food. No imagination with the tapas and the mains of a squared chicken with a little salsa and boiled rice. Moorish - why are there no tagines? These can be prepared in advance and heated up with couscous salad etc., There were four "chefs" in the kitchen as I passed on the way to the ladies, just stood round doing nothing. We went early as we thought they would be booked up - that would have been fun. Could honestly say that Ashburton needs somewhere for evening meals and you would make a fortune - nothing could be as bad or as far from Moorish as we have ever seen. Try buying a book from Yotam Ottolenghi. It is not rocket science. Approach the Cookery School for help and inspiration. Would definitely not recommend this restaurant until or if, it pulls its socks up.

Funny how establishments make fundamental mistakes sometimes. Dropped in for a quick drink but was tempted to try the tapas which turned out to be well above average. The staff too were friendly and efficient. But it was a cold evening and the wood burner wasn't lit....my thinking goes "why wouldn't this be the first thing to get right?" OK, if it isn't a wood burner why pretend it is? If you want ambience, just light the fire!

Moorish offers deliciously unusual middle eastern food. A good selection of tapas and main meal special options. The surroundings are spotless, light, relaxed and very friendly. The service was exemplary.

We chose several dishes which were all delicious. The portion on the small size and not all our dishes came out together, but we did enjoy them very much. The decor and atmosphere was very nice. Would go again.

Friendly reception. Choice of some tapas, three desserts and three mains (fish meat, vegetarian). Mains only served for dinner.Mains were adequate, though underseasoned.Pan con tomate was a joke. Two chunks of untoasted bake-off wholemeal baguette with tasteless tomato puree and a couple of slices of Serrano ham for GBP 4.95. Total bill for three tapas, two mains and one dessert was about 50GBPNot a lot of competition in the town of Ashburton makes for an uninspired kitchen at Moorish.

My partner and I had dinner at Moorish while staying at a BnB nearby in order to attend a wedding. I was a bit unsure, having looked at their website, about the small menu, but actually we both found dishes we really enjoyed. The restaurant was quite busy for the time of year. The staff were very friendly and the service was good. We had some olives and bread to start, followed by grilled lamb with beans and pomegranate for me and the Catalan fish stew for my partner. Both delicious! We couldn't resist ordering the fried rice balls on the side (one of the specials from the blackboard) and we also had pudding - ice-cream and chocolate brownie. Portions were generous and everything we ate was tasty and satisfying. I would definitely recommend Moorish for anyone who enjoys Spanish/Moorish and related cuisines.

Our visit here is mixed. The main dishes they offer (we ordered one sea bass, one duck) were amazing! Definitely 5 out of 5 in terms of quality, cooked perfectly, tasty.Service was good.We gave 4 rather than 5 as the tapas was good but not the quality as the mains - so those that opted for mixed tapas instead of mains were raving as much as we were!Would recommend though. Rioja was good too.

Ashburton is a real foodies town. Not only does it host one of the country's top cookery schools, it is also home to some very good food shops and delicatessen. It only follows that there should be a good restaurant in town. This is it. Good fresh food at an honest price.

I ordered tapas at this restaurant. Potato dish was good. But other was described as bruscetta, when it came it was six small French toast style crackers with cheese spread on top and a slither of what I think was fig....they have the nerve to charge 3 95......... presumably made by a chef.My eight year old granddaughter would have made a better job.I didn't pay. Shame as Xmas meeting with friend.

This is the only non-pub venue to serve food in Ashburton. The decor and lighting are pleasing. The food was interesting and tasty, Moroccan based. There are plenty of tapas dishes available but only three mains, a meat, a fish and a vegetarian option. We tried both the fish and chicken and it was delicious.

I come here 2 or 3 times a year and love it. This time with close friend. Always a relaxed atmosphere with friendly relaxed service. A range of seating arrangements. Specials on chalk board, some tapas and mains plus a standard menu of tapas and mains. Good wine list, sherries and sweet wine. Sometimes with the tapas they have seemed quite small but this evening really good value. We share olives and bread and then a lovey sea food / tomatoy fish stew, meatballs in a tomato sauce, spinach, potato wedges with aioli -just lovely. There was also a chicken tapas and some more veggie ones but this was enough for us
