Thoroughly enjoyed eating here. The food was lovely and beautifully plated. The server was very polite and professional. The only thing that bothered me was the music, it was just too loud . I was with a friend who is hard of hearing and even with his aids on he couldn't keep track of the conversation. It would also be useful that when making a booking people could be informed about quiz night. We did leave a lot earlier than intended because of the high volume.

This is my third time here and it’s fantastic every time, great food lovely service from staff and good setting and atmosphere too

Me and my family have been loyal supporter and fan of Montpellier since we moved in Edinburgh. Lovely atmosphere, lovely staff and great food. Today my experience was truly disheartening. I ordered a Scottish rump steak, as I did few times in the past, and they served a very thin and tough meat, very cheap and terrible quality. Not a rump steak for sure. A very rude manager too. What a pity!

The food was warm, not that tasty. The waiter was lovely but never asked about our experience at all hence review. Bruntsfield has more places that are better than this venue. My friend was persuaded by the decor which is lovely. Never again

If I could leave twenty stars, I would! My friends and I met here on the 25th of January, the day after storm Eowyn. We needed to sit outside because one of us experiences migraines and tinnitus when around mobile phone radiation. The OG Jules was exemplary! She ensured we were warm (switching on the outdoor heating and providing hot water bottles, as well pulling out the awning in case it rained). My group hadn’t met up for a few years and the terrific food and service truly made this an outing to remember. Thank you again to the OG Jules!

Don’t get the ‘steak’ frites. It’s a very thin piece of beef with chips (not the shoestring fries advertised). Not worth £22, the burgers are ok and there’s a good selection of beers

Ah montpeliers....my favourite hangover recovery spot in the 1990s...now so posh and swish, but still with outstanding bacon and black pudding baps...

We had a great evening. Really lovely food, great service from a very friendly hostess and good with food allergies (wheat, dairy, nuts).

Came in for drinks, Lana was great helping us pick wine and all the other staff were super friendly too. It's a gorgeous bar, and dead cosy too.

Food delicious and atmosphere great. Room was a little loud but that’s to be expected for a busy restaurant. The staff are always so lovely to an elderly family member who lives nearby and very obliging when she wants to sit at her favourite table or she wants her food a certain way. I had the veggie breakfast which was delicious. The haggis and tattie scones were a great local twist to the standard breakfast.

The haggis served with the breakfast was nice, meaty and well seasoned. The other breakfast items were ok. They fried the potatoe scone in oil...that was a bit yukky !

Crowded, dogs barking inside, horribly warm, mediocre food, half the menu was unavailable, and some dishes weren't served as they were described on the menu. We commented with the staff about the issues but unfortunately their range of capability tonight went from overworked to numb. We won't be coming back.

When we have family or friends visiting we alternate between two or three places and we went back to Montpelliers this time. Only for our son having his partner with us for the first time I would’ve complained. Everyone’s food was lukewarm (after a lengthy wait) - 2 full Montys, 1 Monty and 2 Eggs Benedict. The Monty’s looked a bit smaller than I remembered but the single sausage with each was laughable - no exaggeration but they looked like my little finger. The toast was even later to arrive and was cold. The Benedicts were okay but not hot enough. Afterwards we did a little shopping and ended up popping into a cafe to have a hot chocolate and cake because no-one felt that they’d had a decent brunch. Used to be a go-to brunch but I can think of several other outlets that I’d use instead. I’m looking for value not cheap food and this certainly isn’t cheap. So until someone persuades me that things will change?

Very rude bar service- never expected to be asked to vacate our seats when no had told us that the bar was shut prior. Rude staff I will not return.

Staff need to learn how to greet customers. Finding this more and more nowadays .. just make sure that the customer knows you have seen them . Acknowledgement is paramount in hospitality

Awful food. Freezing cold homous. Congealed vegetable thai curry with 1980’s white long grain rice. Tough steak. Dripping wet wine glass. Just has a really unclean cheap feel about it. Steamy windows which is always unpleasant to eat in. I agree with previous review used to be great but really disappointing. Not value for money.

Very cosy family owned restaurant with great food and excellent coffee.

Service was lovely, the atmosphere too, but the food was unfortunately a letdown.. poached eggs were dry and cold, juice sold as fresh, was cold not "fresh". The veggies were dry and not seasoned. My friend's food was as disappointing as mine. I remember this place being lovely a few years ago :(

Four of us met for lunch . The food took well over an hour to come - when we enquired about the delay we were told that some of our dishes took a long time to cook! -Burger, fish & chips, chicken Souvlaki and chicken Kiev! In the meantime it was clear to us that people who had been seated after us were getting their food. The Bar was by no means busy. When our food came it we all agreed that it should have been warmer than it was. But we were hungry and the other side of a bottle of wine and decided to just press on. I had the burger, it was dry and lacking one of the ordered additions. The fish was good. We told the waitress that we weren't impressed and we were given a discount and free coffee. Most of us have eaten here before and found it to be pretty good, so we were very disappointed by our experience today.

Visited for a birthday brunch at the weekend. Staff were friendly and we hadn't booked but they managed to make space for us at the bar. Great selection of drinks and extensive menu, however the veggie breakfasts we ordered were fairly mediocre. Food arrived not very warm, poached eggs were hard, and mushrooms lacked seasoning. We never had a follow up table check so didn't get a chance to pass on feedback at the time. I've been before a few years ago and previously had a great experience so I can imagine it was too busy and the kitchen was overrun, but I would've rather been turned away then knowingly served a sub par experience. I think there's much better spots for breakfast in Edinburgh at a much better price so don't think I'll be back.

Huge variety of drinks available, excellent food and service. Busy atmosphere, could be a bit too noisy for little ones but cannot be faulted. Large screens for rugby. Awesome staff.

We had a lovely time for brunch. Ro served us and was great; very attentive to us despite being sat outside. Chai latte and french toast is recommended!

Very nice Breakfast at Montpellier

Popped in for a quick drink before heading out for the evening. Montpeliers is always a very welcoming bar with a friendly atmosphere. One Cocktail & one pint of Peroni were just what was needed . Would recommend a Cocktail from the £5 drinks deal as well worth it.

We had an amazing experience for dinner here! The atmosphere was immaculate and the service was stellar! Cocktails to die for and steak frites were a delight! Big thank you to Scott who made sure we were looked after all night long. Couldn’t recommend enough! ☺️

Food was very mid. My burger was overcooked and the chips were not fresh. The appetizers were good but I would not go again for food. The drinks were great.

Was delightfully surprised by this welcoming spot for brunch. Got an Americano and some French toast. It was pretty average food but the place was great and the staff were amazing.

We stopped here right after landing. The food is excellent, and they have several gluten free options. They have gluten free bread and buns. We enjoyed it so much that we came back for breakfast the next day.

Went for a family meal yesterday we all liked our meals. We were served by a young man called Nathan he was very pleasant attentive nothing was to much trouble. We will definitely be back again

The staff are always super friendly, and the food is consistely good at a reasonable price with good (generous but not too big) portions. It can get busy, and a bit noisy, but has a relaxed atmosphere so always a pleasure :)

Pre Booked in with a huge group today (20+) Difficult service for any restaurant. Front and back of house did a great job. Was really impressed with the cook on my fish. Was perfect. Really good sauces on the dishes I tried. merci à vous tous

First I’d like to start by saying the atmosphere of the place is very lovely and it looked great. The staff was also friendly. However, The food needs work. My friend ordered an eggs Benedict and I ordered a steak. The poached eggs was not poached but instead boiled and very hard. The steak came with fries which seemed cheap and absorbed quite a lot of oil. The itself steak was thin and had little taste, They also did not give a steak knife for it. The drinks were good though. We had wine which was appropriately chilled and cold. Overall the experience was a 2 as the atmosphere and staff is great however the food needs work. Hopefully they can improve. I recommend this place for drinks at this given time!

The restaurant was being used as a mum and baby clinic and there were push chairs and screaming babies. Whilst the staff seemed nice and friendly, the standard of food was particularly poor. Sadly, we have noticed that Montpeliers isn't what it used to be.

We ate here a while ago on a special offer set menu and thought the choice and quality of the food was really nice. I think I had arancini to start and mussels for the main. Well priced, portioned, and tasty. Unfortunately, it was a different experience bringing friends here last night and eating off the main menu. Paying £17.50 for a veggie burger, I would have expected it to come with side salad at least. It was a fairly unadorned burger with a handful of fries, looking sad and sparse on the plate, that would have been rivalled by a McDonald's take away. The £200 bill, for four adults and two kids meals, didn't feel justified no matter how nice the setting or service. I don't know if the lack of effort is because the Fringe is providing a guaranteed tourist turnover, but sadly I am one local who has been put off returning.

Aug 2024 update: visited for breakfast. We had french toast, smashed avocado on toast with smoked salmon and egg benedict with smoked salmon. Always good, always a great atmosphere and always busy. Stocks Beavertown beer!

Nice atmosphere, nice touch the flowers on tables, visually appealing cocktails and food. However the wild raspberry spritz was excessively sweet and the raspberries were large store-bought berries not wild. The steak burger was moist and tasty presented with well cocked fries and a disappointing red sauce. The prawns were delicious and accompanied by gluten-free bread as my guest requested. A positive experience.

They ruined the full monty, makes me so sad. I would pay more for the full thing. The tater tots are disappointing, why not hash browns??

Previous review: It's ok. Staff are lovely and friendly, it's just the quality of food isn't great for the price. We've visited quite a few times and there's always an issue or disappointment with meals. Drinks however are good and as mentioned, the staff are lovely, friendly and very helpful when something goes wrong. The atmosphere is great and we end up going for drinks now and then. Although it has a great atmosphere, it's close to "style over substance". Again, staff make a big positive impact

Wow the staff made us wait a lot today. Waited a while for water that all tables got on arrival, then a while for our order to be taken. The drinks took so long the table who arrived some time after us got their drinks first so we had to ask where ours were. Took another long while for the food, which was underwhelming. We had the Scottish Beef Burger. It was very dry. We were offered sauces and I said yes, but they only brought us a tiny amount, enough for one of us only even though we both had the burger. The fries came salted - tough if you don't like or can't eat salt. The rolls for the burgers were also dry, so in combo with the dry burgers, not a great experience. Only two toilet cubicles in the ladies. One had no loo paper and a broken lock. The floor was wet and my mother slipped on it. Hardly any room to move or close the toilet doors. Toilet seat was broken. Then we had to wait a long time for the bill - while the same table mentioned above got their bill handed to them immediately after their plates were removed. Disappointing, underwhelming, will not be back!

Great place to catchup with friends. Get very crowded so I recommend you book a spot earlier. Food was great, and I appreciate the list of non alcoholic drinks!

not tasty at all, duck as the main dish - it’s not duck - it’s pasta with some duck leftovers. Nothing even close to French cuisine.

We only went in for drinks with a friend who lives close by. Joolz (the gaffa) was lovely as we're the rest of the staff. It was popular on both our visits. It has a good selection of beers and spirits (Brooklyn lager £6ish).

Lovely local spot for food or drinks . Bit noisy when busy as the tables are close together. Nice £ 15 dinner menu although my friend’s portion of risotto was small and lacking the oils promised.

Really great place to have dinner in Edinburgh, casual with delicious food. When they are busy, it might take longer to bring out your food, so be wary of it. I do recommend the Scottish eggs!

Service was excellent and very accommodating. However, I’ve been going to Montpeliers for about 5 years, this was my first time back in over a year and I was very disappointed to find that the quality of the food had substantially dropped. My partner is vegetarian and ordered the moving mountains burger, which felt like a half arsed, bare minimum effort at providing a veggie burger, and came out burned and extremely dry. Other people in our party had better experiences, but were generally underwhelmed by the food, which was quite bland and uninspired for the price we were charged. TLDR; Service and atmosphere were great. The food was very forgettable. Sadly won’t be rushing back.

We’ve been to Montpeliers countless times over the years and was really disappointed in our last visit. We had booked a table and were kept waiting for 15mins after the booking time because we were told someone else was on the table. We were left to stand at the bar and had to remind the staff more than once about our booking. The food itself was the most disappointing thing, I had the Duck pasta which was very bland and tasteless. My wife had a pie, which was watery, bland, soggy and not heated the whole way through. The staff were also very deliberate in trying to upsell us on specific sides, which we did have and found to be expensive and tasteless. I’ve had great food in the past here but this experience was highly disappointing. The staff also didn’t ask us how our meal was at the end and seemed very uninterested.

Our server Amber was so friendly and our food was amazing, came really quickly - another lovely experience at Montpeliers!

Fantastic experience at Montpeliers today. Was with a friend I hadn't seen for ages and we had loads to catch up on and so we were very slow to order (and we hadn't booked). But we were never hurried by our waiter RO. First we chatted for ages, then we had coffees, then we mused over brunch... And it was a busy Saturday but we were allowed to follow our own pace. So full marks to Ro. Impeccable attendance - we will certainly be back.

Only been a couple of times, but found the food very overpriced (and overcooked) with little flavour. The burger I had was extremely dry and the overwhelming taste was just burnt beef. Fries were stone cold before finishing the meal and the only reason I didn't complain at the time was to save embarrassment among our small party (the others seemed to enjoy their food, so maybe I was just unlucky). I know it's Edinburgh, but think a Burger King would have been a far better choice (and much cheaper too!). The only positive thing I can say is that the service was good.

Great food and stylish ambience. Ro couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful. The place was full but didn’t feel too loud and there was no pressure for us to finish and make room for the next customers. We will be back.

Absolute great cooked breakfast, even my Italian parents shared one and loved it. The manager is a lovely lady who looked after us, I'd definitely go back next time in Edinburgh.

Me and my wife went a few times to get the breakfast from Montpeliers. The full monty is specially great. The vibe of the restaurant is very relaxing, the architecture and interior design is very well thought. The service was always great, Amber was a specially thoughtful waitress. I would definetly come back when in Edimburg.
