Montgomery Fish Bar in Powys

A group of 7 who had a variety of meals including fish, chicken pittas and pies which were all very tasty. Friendly and helpful staff.

We noticed the fish and chip shop by chance when driving through the village. Really impressed with the food. We had 2x fish and chips & 2x kids sausage and chips. The fish was ace, service was friendly and plenty of chips. I’m surprised in the negative reviews by others, ignore them & give it a go!

Walked out without purchasing..ordered two fish & chips & a tartare sauce.. Don’t sell tartare sauce at this fish & chip shop!! Offered to wait whilst fresh fish & chips were cooked….didn’t do that either. The off hand young man showed me the chips he was going to sell me, soggy, not very hot & looking tired & old..I asked if they were full price ( which is not competitive anyway) & yes they were full price.. the thought of the fish was too much to contemplate so I left.. Wake up Montgomery Fish Bar, you’re letting this beautiful town & yourselves down. Unacceptable & not to be recommended.

The chips were crap the kebabs were dry and stale. Need a mortgage to afford this place. Avoid at all costs do not recommend at all

Still crap, cash only, why? Annoying to say the least! How is this place tolerated in such a tight knit community, dedicated to local produce.

We were doing some work at home and could not be asked with cooking and thought we would try the local fish & chip shop for just chips [ to make chip butties ] not something we have very often but just fancied it The chips were not cooked enough really [ not golden & crispy ] like when I make them at home, had hardly any taste and were not that hot either, just really bland really, would not have again, which is a shame.

I was staying local with family and looked at the reviews which had me thinking I'd have to travel all the way to Welshpool to get decent fish and chips. I'm so glad I gave this place a chance, great fish and even better chips!

I was almost put off by the reviews- but really pleased to have given it a go. Fabulous! Very generous portions, great chips and absolutely first rate fish. Sparkling clean shop and friendly staff. Thank you! I’ll visit again.

Me and my partner picked up a large chips with 2 large sausages from this chip shop, which to us is a local friendly environment but that’s where the compliments end unfortunately. The portion of chips wasn’t anywhere near enough for 2 people And at 3.50 just for the chips you can understand the frustration. We won’t be attending again would much rather the longer drive to Welshpool.

Tried the food a few times, it was always lacking and very expensive. The sausage are the worst I have ever ever tasted, mostly bread I would guess.

The chips were pale and slimy. They appeared to have some sort of synthetic coating on them, like a tasteless varnish. I suspect this is a product that has been developed so they can be reheated and still have some version of crunch, but they were just appalling, so oily and unpleasant. It’s a shame, because on the face of it this looks like a place that knows what it’s doing, and has a lovely position in the town, but if you’re going to have something so high calorie for a treat, you really want it to be good. This kind of food shouldn’t be hard, all it’s supposed to be is real whole food ingredients, freshly deep fried, put in paper, some salt and vinegar, that’s it. I hope they can sort it out.

Pale, under cooked chips. Expensive too. The food you usually expect from a chippy was just not there. It cant be that difficult to offer chips and a sausage. The sausage was tasteless. ad the chips were pale and soggy - this is the second and last time I will by food from this place.

I could cope with it being the mostc xpensive fish I’ve ever bought from a chippy if the flesh was not grey and dry. Very disapoonting

Friendly helpful and informative staff, excellent service. Arrived late, not long before closing time, near the end of a long tiring bike ride. Could not have been more helpful, a real life saver.

Called in 5 30 for chips and curry sauce . DISAPPOINTED to put it mildly obviously chips where cooked previously cool and hard will NOT use them again and will call them

Had 3 steak and kidney pies and chips. Chips were ok , but 2 of our 3 pies were dried up with no gravy in as such, of which one was overcooked and had rock hard pastry. Not great by any means, put me right...

We had to pop into Montgommery last weekend and decided to have lunch from here. Great decision - fish cooked perfectly in a tasty batter and the chips were also delicious. Will definitely be coming back. 👍🏻

I haven't had such good fish (cod) for ages. I recommend this place to all food lovers. You have to take it away, by that is no burden.

Usually quite good and freshly cooked. Lunch today was awful. Chips had been cooked a long while before we bought them at 12-15pm and fish just warm and soggy. Bad experience, will not return.

Decent fish and chips - huge portion and all cooked to perfection. This is our 4th visit too 👍 it’ll be our ‘go to’ for Fish and Chips in 2020 👍

We use this Fish Bar regular and the Fish and Chips are always good now, The service is good and nothing too much trouble.

They do other food as well but the fish and chips are always lovely and you get a good portion for the money!

Hi there, we have FISH N' CHIPS last week and again tonight.. Gorgeous flavour, both chips & very nice Cod. Batter perfect. Only one little thing - one potatoe must have got through, doggie said thank you though...few dark patches on chips. Up it up...

Asked what fish they had.....and the guy just pointed at the 2 remaining pieces in the hot cupboard...."cod" we asked....a nod. So we had 2 cod and chips......tepid cod and chips.... Won't be going there again!

Service is always fast even at peak times. Food very good and quite reasonable priced. I have never had a bad meal here!!

Had a good portion of fish and chips from this place and it was piping hot and freshly cooked. One person in our group did have chicken and another a cheese and onion pasty, both said they were not very nice to say the least but I guess that’s what you get when you order something like that in a fish n chip shop

Visited here with our family of 16! They were very accommodating and our food was ready in a reasonable time considering the size of our group! Very reasonably prices and delicious food! Thanks to Montgomery fish bar, especially the man with the long hair! Very friendly :)

Popped in as a group of 16 on holiday after visiting Montgomery Castle. Only a short wait after a large order and everyone their lunchtime chips.

Took a friend to visit the castle. Planned to have lunch in one of the tea shops but they were full so decided last minute to opt for fish and chips. It was a lovely summers day so we ate them sitting on the grass in the castle grounds. The fish and chips were excellent as was the view making it one of the best impromptu picnics in a long while

I am puzzled to read the poor reviews. We visit this chip shop on a regular basis. The food is lovely and the staff are friendly and always pass the time of day with us. I could not fault at all.

We went on a walk in the area and came across this fish bar.some of our party showed restraint whilst the rest of us had chips. Within minutes the none chip buyers were eating our chips. They were lovely. The fish looked so nice and we spoke to a chap outside who was having pie and chips and said it was delicious.

Called in here today at a busy teatime took our order of 15+ meals and all where cooked fresh. Had time for a pint or two in The Crown. The fish and chips where great along with friendly service .Well worth a visit 👍

Call here now again always tidy food staff friendly and are open from lunch time daily which is handy.

Possibly the worst fish and chips in Wales, if not in the world! Chips were half raw and greasy, fish disgusting, service slow... waste of time and money.

We visited the Dragon hotel Montgomery Dec 2017 for a one-night stay but were informed no evening meals were available as they had a drinks party? My wife and I, had both had a drink so could not drive, so the only option for us was the chip shop.

Have not had chips from a chip shop for years, after long walk on a nippy Nov afternoon we shared a small tray, the were gorgeous, piping hot, sat on the bench outside...fab.

having read the reviews we reluctantly tried the fish and chip shop in montgomery and we were very pleasantly suprised the large chips was more than enough for two and the meal of beef and onion pie chips and peas was on par with any other we have had over the years. Sunday night 6pm and the meal was lovely £8.40 all in.

Decided to treat ourselves to a fish and chip lunch as we don't often indulge, not disappointed,lovely crunchy batter and nice fresh chips. Definitely recommend.

Very disappointing, wanted to support local business but prices are too high, portions too small and to be honest not really worth recommending sorry.

Called in after visiting Monty's brewery as this is the only take away in town. Ordered fish and chips which I thought were being freshly prepared, but sadly not. The chips were lukewarm and fish very small and tasteless. The food looks and tastes as though it is standing for a long time and maybe there simply isn't the passing trade to justify opening at lunchtime.

I live locally and it's the only chip shop for miles (which is probably the only reason its still open) but I've vowed never to go back here again after giving it a few goes now.

Had a large fish and chips costing £5.50. The fish was cold,obviously hanging about too long,chips were also cold and soggy. Have used this fish and chip shop before and has previously been ok if not great,but tonight they were inedible.

Over priced. Fish was over cooked and greasy. Chips tasted as they had been cooked twice. Sausage was inedible. Wont be going back again.

Stopped by for a bite in the late afternoon as we were passing and thought we would give this a try as we have passed it a few times. Prices are about average by my reckoning and the food was fine, the staff friendly.

Normally I am not too keen on the traditional English chips, but Montgomery Fish Shop offered a rare treat of perfectly made delicious chips. They have a good range of foods - fish and chips, of course but also burgers, pies, chicken, kebabs and more.

An engaging pair of Bulgarians working hard to make a go of this fish bar and they deserve to succeed. Good fish and chip range and all cooked perfectly.

been here a few years ago and while on holiday i popped back for mini fish and chips, and to say mini was absolutely correct, served on the smallest foam tray i've ever seen and the chips were warm but soggy and the fish was little more than a fish finger asked for salt and vinegar well he waved the pots over but don't think anything came out and all for the rip off price of £4.40 each as i had 2 portions for £8.80 i can get 3 bigger portions back home for £9.75 the lot.
