Monnow Bridge Fish Bar Restuarant & Take Away in Monmouthshire

Awful service. Visited today , approximately 1.15 and sat in the garden and ordered our food. 2 people came into the garden about 10 mins after us and hit their meal . After waiting 35 mins we enquired if we had been forgotten, and the surly middle aged lady said they had to cook the fish , even though they were not busy !!!! After another 10 mins we enquired again so 40 min in total the woman and the young boy did not even look up and acknowledge our enquiry so we walked out and hot brilliant service snd food at Wetherspoons .

Listen to this. Senior Citizens set lunch, fish chips and peas, with bread and butter and a pot of tea. £8.35. I'm not kidding. And not small portions either, a delicious big plateful. Conveniently situated near the car park, as well as being a take-out chippy, the Monnow has a clean, pleasant cafe with indoor and outdoor seating, and the service is excellent.

We went having been recommended by a local pub/restaurant who were without a chef for the week and wow. Lovely, efficient people who were able to tell me which of the specials was dairy free with zero fuss. The food was wonderful and plentiful we will definitely going again!

We stopped here this afternoon enroute to Cheltneham, and so glad we did. The fish and chips was the nicest we have ever had, and the staff were lovely, and we didn’t have to wait long at all for our order. Would highly recommend ☺️

Have visited the Monnow Bridge Fish Bar many times. Visited again in last few days and once again received excellent service. Lyndsey served my wife and I. Very friendly and efficient. My wife requested Lyndsey (manager) if she could have a salad instead of the chips. ‘No problem’ and the salad was prepared by Tia with a smile and the salad was very appealing. Robyn cooked the food and to perfection, cooked freshly. Thank you Lyndsey, Tia and Robyn, will be back in again soon when in Monmouth. Bishop David & Anne.

The worst fish and chips ever...tasteless fish, poor batter and undercooked chips. Small portion of fish for a so say large fish. Waste of money.

Stopped here on a December lunchtime on spec. Decided to eat in. Fish, chips, mushy peas, bread and coffee. All piping hot and great quality. Good service, pleasant staff. I couldn't fault it.

I went into this fish bar and found the two young ladies too busy talking to serve until I asked was anyone serving and then I was acknowledged. I asked for 1 large and 1 small fish and separate chips, the chips and fish were bagged up together and when we came to eat them the small fish seemed to be fish skin and batter, no fish inside. As we don't live locally I didn't take it back so because of this I will never go into this shop again. As a suggestion two more mature ladies I'm sure would do a better job

Just stopped off to look around and found this fish and chip shop. Only bought chips bit they were cooked well and very hot.

Expensive considering the small portions. Large fish was a small portion . Fish was cold and staff were not customer focused in managing concerns.

Slow service Unclean Poor hygiene(picking chips that had fallen out of the tray with hands and putting them back on the tray for the customer. Pink in the middle sausages, staff using same meat thermometer on fish and sausages and not washing in-between Staff weren't shocked that sausage was pink in the middle, just oh sorry like they weren't bothered. Would not give them a 2nd chance.

Just had fish & chips from here & wish I hadn't bothered. Ordered one large & one small cod both with chips & a pot of curry sauce which cost over £15, the large cod was about the size of a small portion elsewhere and the small cod was about 2ozin weight, the batter on both was slimey and uncooked inside, chips were vile and as for the curry sauce I don't class a takeaway espresso cup a portion, even my 8yr old grand daughter was disgusted, wish I'd stopped in Ross on Wye for chips now.

Just picked up a portion of chips. Should of been a simple order. I've had poor quality chips before but today's beats previous efforts! They were greasy and soggy, and inedible. If I hadn't been living out of town, I would of taken them back for a refund. I would definately not recommend them and next time I'll go to the chip shop in Priory Street - I've been there before and should of gone there today!

Today 28 May 2021 we bought 3 takeaway lunchtome meals. I had haddock, chips and peas; my husband ordered plaice in breadcrumbs and chips and my daughter had cod, chips and gravy. Her fish was reasonable with crispy batter, overy a skinned cod fillet, already cooked at the time of ordering. However, for my husband and I, our orders were freshly cooked. His was disgusting, a thick slab of hard, coagulated breadcrumbs over an unskilled plaice fillet - he couldn't eat it. Mine was an unskinned cod fillet with pale, flaccid batter. I did eat the fish after removing the batter and skin. I didn't actually go into the restaurant but my daughter commented that the staff on duty that lunchtime were unfriendly and surly.

This was a lovely find. The OAP meal deal was great. The fish was tasty, with chips and bread& butter and pot of hot tea. The service was very friendly, really liked the outside eating terrace, very clean.

ordered cod and chips. The batter was tasteless as was the grey-looking fish! Dont know if it was cod or "something else"! chips were crisp but full of grease. Absolutely horrible, I'd never go there again and neither will you unless you like wasting money!

I went here with my two sons today. I ordered three small battered sausages and a regular portion of chips from the kind worker at the counter, who took my order politely and efficiently and bid me good day. We took the food out to the picnic benches over the road by the river. The sausages were tasty and crisp. the chips were simply the best I have eaten in this country and good enough to rival the best pomme frites or Greek fried chipped potatoes. Worth the 1 1/2 hour drive alone.

Ate hear on our stay in monmouth.I had curry and my partner had fish / chips it was basic food,as we were not that hungry it filled a hole and was ok. The price was right !

We had a takeaway from here and they truly were the best we've had in a very long time. All safety measure were in place and were being adhered too

This little gem of a Fish and chippy is well situated right next to car Parking. A Beauty spot by the River Monnow with its ancient bridge over the monnow. But there is more to this chippy than just a chippy. It sells nice cups of tea and coffee at good prices to take out and if thats not all a dining area for you at the back to have beverages and food. The prices are good and the portions good too. They even sell a small portion of chips just right for an Child or an adult not quite that hungry at the very good price of £1.50. I visit there with friends on Motorbikes and we always have a cuppa and food and then chill out by the River. When its warmer you find families paddling in the river there and feeding the ducks. Plenty of grass space to settle down and also seating for those who wish. One of my favourite places to visit. If you are stuck for a bit of shopping its right next to the main street in monmouth and you will find it caters for about everything.you need

Having bought takeaway meals and hot tea from this establishment a few times in the past and found the food very tasty, I opted again for the 'Senior Citizen's' deal, plus a cup of TEA with NO SUGAR and just a LITTLE milk. I was given what you see in the photo. Nothing wrong with the food, but asking for a 'bit more water in the tea, please' was told 'no', unless I was prepared to pay for TWO TEAS!! I assured the girl I just wanted some more water, not TEA and she said 'we can't' because the cups THEY use (disposable) are smaller!!!??? So much for 'environmentally friendly'Certainly won't be returning

Called into Monnow Bridge Fish Bar on the last night of our new years eve break as the italian restaurant we were hoping to eat at was closed - but it worked out for the best as the chips were the best I have tasted in a very long time! We had a variety of food in our party of 6 but were all extremely happy with our choices and would definitely visit agian if back in Monmouth!

Every time we visit Monmouth fish and chips for lunch...they are especially crispy if bought as they open at lunch time. Service is good, staff are friendly.

Service unbelievably slow 1.00 for 1 slice of bread and butter which was falling to pieces extortionate average price for other food been here 25 mins and still waiting

Great fish and chips, and homemade pies. Very pleasant staff. Pleasant areas to sit and chat. Eating outside and inside lots of space. Close to the centre of Monmouth and views of the famous bridge. A very good selection of shops.

My Wife and I made a snap decision to try this place last week while passing the door. I am more of a fish and chip person than my wife, so she chose a Jacket with curry. My Cod was beautifully cooked and tasted delicious, I was asked if I wanted peas to go with my meal but refused. I think the chip portion was a little on the small size but I enjoyed what I had. This outlet is ideally situated for picnics by the fabulous Monnow riverside setting, a bag of chips will accompany anything. We will call again when visiting in the future. Took my wife for a day out in Monmouth,we have tried a few places for food,for eg Robin Hood ,wither spoons,Es Cala,I have given reviews for these venues previously so I thought I would give one for a small fish&chip shop-cafe,my wife had the fish&chipS ,and I had the all day breakfast,both meals were stunning,and the staff were very obliging,and helpful,

Wonderful service and the best fish and chips ive ever had. Visit on a regular basis and wouldnt go anywhere else. On my last visit I overheard a customer complain that the fish tasted fishy and the young lady behind the counter shrugged at him to say what do u expect it to taste of. I'll be returning as I love it there

Called in for something quick to eat very miserable staff couldn't be bothered to serve us , a smile would go a long way customer service needs to be looked at or new staff need to be employed with a smile and friendly attitude will definitely not be returning.

Great fish and chips, lovely size portions and made nice and fresh. Lovely smell as the food was cooking which entices you in.

Ok so where do I start? Well my husband ordered chips with beans and I ordered a small portion of chips. The chips were absolutely foul!! They were very greasy, completely tasteless and were of very cheap quality. The beans on my husband’s chips were also of cheap quality and nasty. Even the vinegar was tasteless and I doused my chips with it in the hopes that I would be able to taste it. My husband and I ended up throwing the food away because it was just horrible. The young girl who served us was so rude in the way that she served us. She threw the chips into the tray as if we were bothering her and she slammed the trays onto the counter without even bothering to close them. I’ve never received such bad customer service and poor quality food before. It’s not worth coming here for food, save your money and go elsewhere!

Located right next to the Monnow gatehouse bridge, so very easy to find. Nice clean window front that shows off all that lovely battered fish and chips. After a few beers there is nothing like a bag of chips. Yum.

Our first visit here, it smelt good from outside! The staff where helpful, the food was delicious, beautiful chips. Would go there again.

Despite the recommendation of good food, today our experience was dreadful. 8 of the 11 tables were stacked with dirty pots and there was nowhere to sit, so we returned later. The same tables were still dirty, so we cleared ourself a space, and despite the waitresses seeing people come in and leave because there was no space..... they chose to have a conversation. The staff were shouting each other across the building and we waited 10 mins to be served. I ordered a large fish, bread and butter and curry sauce, with a hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was weak and served with a jug of milk on the side??? My fish was NOT any more than 5-6 inches long, served upside down and was swimming in fat with soggy batter. After eating we waited another 5 mins stood by the till waiting to pay. The staff took our money, and as we were leaving we heard her say to another member of staff that we had been overcharged.....so why not put it right? Had I had any confidence in the staff in duty I would have challenged them about the food AND about the money.... but in all fairness, we just wanted to leave as it left us angry and slightly nauseous. Please do think very carefully about visiting here.... it’s expensive and really not worth popping in. Very disappointing.

Went in for lunch today. We do this on an infrequent basis and have previously found the staff to be pleasant and helpful. Today the food was good but the service was terrible. They kept us waiting nearly half an hour for a sweet, and after asking if we could place our order we appeared to be intentionally ignored. When, on paying the bill, I mentioned the slow service I was told they were short of staff but received no apology. Come on Monnow Fish Bar - you can do better than that.

Clean, efficient and great portion size. For a change they had haddock cooked and ready. The batter was light and not greasy and the fish was fresh and perfectly cooked. The chips were piled high although I was offered a large portion I could not see that it would be possible.

We recently where on Holiday in Kingsland Herefordshire this was are 9th visit, we always go to Monmouth for a day and once again went for our lunch to the Monnow Bridge Fish Bar. I had a senior fish & chips special this included bread & butter a choice of tea or coffee, my Husband decided to have the all day breakfast this also included either pot of tea or coffee.The portion where big,all the food was served hot and of excellent quality. The staff are very friendly and come and ask if everything is OK. I would recommend this restaurant for all age groups and families as they have a wide range menu and a children special menu. We will be going again in May 2018

We called into this cafe today for lunch. We sat in the cafe area and had cod & chips with tea and bread & butter. The service was excellent and very prompt, and the food was very enjoyable. The staff were very friendly and attentive and the place was spotless. Will definitely visit again.

Have used this place for years off and on and it can be up and down..but tonight we have been really disappointed as prices have gone up and portion size has gone way down. Also when I said the sausage and chips were for a little one I was asked do I want a kids meal then which means a small cone of chips with a small sausage so I said yes ok if that's best..I was offered an awful carton drink which she said was free with the meal but we don't give our little one those sugary drinks so I said no thanks...when I came home I thought I'd paid a lot for a couple of chips one sausage and small curry sauce, which isn't very good to be honest..anyway I called to ask about prices which I then realise have gone up but also the kids take away meal is £2.60 and all you get is the smallest £1 cone of chips and the sausage wasn't great..if bought separately would be £1.85 so the free drink isn't actually free at all! I had no apology when I pointed out I'd paid so much more than I needed. i hate feeling like I've been ripped off, Afraid I'll be going to a different chippy from now on.!

Had seen this place earlier in the day, large car park over the road, and the property is by the old town bridge next to the riverOur fish and chips were of good quality and were piping hot and very tasty. Went into this choppy with my two young children. The staff behind the counter pretty much did everything they could to avoid serving me! I don't think I've ever experienced such bad customer service; stroppy, miserable and condescending. The food itself was bleurgh. As this was the first place I wondered into as I crossed the Monnow Bridge, it left a very bad impression.

A popular cafe close to the bus station, it has a very varied menu besides fish and chips you can have baked potatoes, sandwiches and other meals. I had a baked potato which was very nice and a pot of tea. The prices were very reasonable. And the waitress very friendly.

We stopped here for fish & chips a fortnight ago. We love the fish & chips here, and as others do, like to eat them by the river. We are usually served by happy ladies, who are happy to chat to us while they serve our food. Well, what a reception we got when we started ordering our food on this occasion!!!! The girl obviously has had no training in customer services. Really stroppy attitude. We only asked for items on the board - 2 fishcakes & chips with curry sauce, battered sausage & chips, and breaded mushrooms with chips. No requests for anything out of the ordinary. There were 3 of us, so you'd expect 3 boxes of food, wouldn't you? But, after a lot of huffing and puffing, and complaining, we actually had 8 polystyrene boxes!!!!! The girl couldn't get it into her head that sausage & chips go together in one box, as should the fishcakes & chips, and so on... As she was serving out the food, I tried to explain what should go with what, but no, she was determined to do it her own bloody-minded way, and used as many containers as she could, with a backhand "you can sort it out yourselves". When we left, I said "thank you", but was blatantly ignored, and noted the look of shock on the faces of other customers' who were waiting in the queue. There were two girls behind the counter. I have to say that it was "Miss Server" who was the rude, miserable one - "Miss Fryer" appeared much more pleasant, and just said nothing when "Miss Server" was having her rant. It would be a shame not to visit this establishment again, but really Monnow Bridge need to sort out this person. If she is serving if and when we do go again, I will be tempted to ask whether she is in a better frame of mind than last time...

Having had a pleasant wander around Monmouth the wife and I were fancied a light snack for lunch and the Monnow Fish Bar seemed worth a visit. We had a Pensioners Meal consisting of cod,peas and chips with bread and butter and tea at £5.95 per person. We had only been seated for a couple of minutes when the waitress took our order. Within another 5 minutes our lunch was brought to the table. The tea was good and the meal was excellent. Advertised as a smaller piece of cod it was more than enough for me and my wife didn't finish hers as she was full. Whilst we were there several other tables were occupied and there seemed to be a steady stream of customers for the take away. The waitress was chatty and the place appeared spotlessly clean. No doubt this will not be our last visit

This is a regular take away for us on Saturday lunch time. The food is always good and freshly cooked. Staff have always been friendly.

Very disappointed, visited this chip shop tonight on our way back from a day out. I asked for two haddock and chips only to be told they were frozen and they wouldn't cook them but they had cod, which I ended up going with as we were hungry. Why have they not prepared properly for the night ahead and got out sufficient fish I dont know. We went in at 6:00 so hardly far into the evening and they were not going to be doing anymore. I went for two cod and chips. Firstly they put the fish in the tray separate to the chips even though I asked for them to be put together, I then got told to put my own salt and vinegar on, then they didnt even wrap the fish or the chips in paper. The fish lukewarm at best and the batter was soggy and they were eaten straight away. I asked for a portion of mushy peas which were luke warm again and put in container and then wrapped in cling film. When I asked if they could bag them up, I got handed a carrier bag seeing as they had done so little with the service so far I figured they could atleast put them in a bag. The serving shelf was dirty and covered in salt, vinegar and cheese which would have taken a cloth to clean up. Very poor will not be returning.

I have Always had the best fish and chips from here, they are the best in town. The people working in there are always polite!

Haven't used this chippy for a long time due to poor experience but I have it another try and well done the fish was superb excellent batter chips wher lovely and the kids had sausage and chicken all well cooked and served with a smile

We had gone to Monmouth to have a little walk around the shops which we like to do from time to time. We thought we would buy some chips to eat al fresco; however when we were outside happened to see a notice "Senior Citizens Special", so we decided to go in, they had a small seating area at the back of the fish bar. In the Summer they had outside seating, We had a small portion of cod (which was quite big enough) lovely freshly cooked chips, mushy peas. Bread and butter and a pot of tea. It was really lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal, excellent value at £5.95 and very tasty.

Popped in here yesterday with daughter-in-law and 3 year old grandson because he wanted chips and I needed a tea. Clean and bright café with lovely staff, I'll definitely be back for a meal next time I'm in Monmouth!

Visited for tea with elderly relatives in November, they asked for a small fish and were offered the pensioners special. They were amazed at the size and quality. Always a pleasure.

We always stop off here on our bi annual bus trips to the RHS Malvern shows, it has become a bit of a slightly daffy tradition of ours! We will be going tomorrow in fact. It is a fish and chip shop at the end of the day, true it is in a lovely location but it can get very busy so expect queues at peak times and not the Ritz? We always sit in the small restaurant at the back and we have always found the staff to be polite and the food acceptable/tasty, we have never been kept waiting long to be served or fed. There is a lot of choice. Perhaps we are easily pleased after a day trawling around an agricultural show but we can recommend. The chips are good.

It was a bit last minute, we popped in five minutes before the chip shop was due to close (7.55pm) on bank holiday Monday evening and joined a queue of about 4. When we were approaching the counter we were told that there were no more chips, then it turned out that there were just three sausages and a piece of dry, unappetising chicken.I asked if it would be possible to make three sausage sandwiches, amusingly I was asked if I would like chips with them, but a colleague reminded our server that there were no chips left, we were then presented with three bread rolls wrapped in film and told that we would "have to do them yourself ".At this point we declined their kind offer and apologised for being so much trouble.I appreciate they must have had a long and busy day (judging by the amount of discarded packaging overflowing from the bins outside). I also know sometimes you will run out of things, but even then you should always provide the best service that you can.

Visited with 16 members of the family aged 3-60+ and each of us said it was one of the best fish and chips we have ever had. Sister in law said it was the best chips she ever had.

We were on our way home when our driver stopped in Monmouth, not having had any chips for a while we decided it would be nice to have some. We called in here and the chips were good, but the fish looked greasy so we did not venture that far. We made do with just chips

Have eaten here for years - on my own, with friends and even ordering for quite large groups (with advance notice).This is one chippy that has never let me down.Just what you need when camping in the area, or after a canoeing trip.Super food, good prices and option to takeaway or eat in.Very friendly.

I had lunch here the staff were busy but friendly and organised I didn't have to wait to long and my cod was nicely cooked and the chips were particularly good and it was very reasonably priced

So appalled!!! Wait twenty minutes in the que and the que was out the door, just as a load more came in they was out of half the items on the menu and said another 10 minutes for chips and 20 for anything fried. What was more annoying was how the staff was so blunt and rude and one of the managers told one if the very young girls to go have a fag because she wanted to go out herself afterwards! I then also seen the girl come back in that didn't wash her hands so that was it for me, disappointed and defiantly the worse chip shop I've been to!

Everytime I come back to Monmouth I always come back here to get their fish and chips. It tastes really nice, freshly cooked and they cook to order for you.Very reasonable price and well worth it.

I was amazed by the rudeness of the staff who work in this establishment! I cannot believe ANYONE would ever go back after one visit - several people who were in the queue when I was there were rolling their eyes as they heard the way the lady on the counter spoke to me! Horrendous!!!They were insistent on cleaning down the equipment whilst the shop was still full and it wasn't even 8pm on a FRIDAY night!!SWERVE THIS CHIP SHOP - the one at the TOP of the High Street opposite Iceland is MUCH, MUCH better!!!

This is a traditional fish and chip restaurant. You eat here to enjoy well cooked fish and chips not because of the decor. We had haddock, chips and mushy peas. The batter was light and crisp and the haddock white and thick. The chips were crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. The peas were marrowfat and not just mashed frozen peas. The bill, including drinks, came to £16. The restaurant is clean but basic. This is the second time we have visited and it will not be the last.

If you're visiting Monmouth and want some great takeaway fish and chips, this is the place to try. Good portions of freshly cooked fayre,

My large cod was two thirds batter (which was overcooked), my wife's medium cod was greasy and inedible, the chips were odd didn't taste like they were made from fresh potato, more like frozen chips. They were also fat laden you could squeeze the fat from them.

I didn't have fish, so can't comment on that, but the chips were lovely, tasty and pretty crisp. I also had a pretty decent pie. I asked for a small portion of chips, and all I can say is if that's small I cannot imagine what large is! For £3.50 to takeout I thought it was great value, and sitting on Chippenham Mead in the evening sunshine eating my supper took some beating.

we recently used this fish bar as we have not used this one for a few years and was told that it had improved from the last visit. I must admit the chips were great but the piece of cod I had was disappointing as it was very greasy and a lot of bones ( I had at least 35 bones). Now whether this was because they were busy I do not know but on the day it was dissapointing

Gr8t fish and chips and other grub, this is the one of our choice always, fresh fish, tasty and hot, easy parking close by. Good value and plentiful portions.

we tried this establishment many years ago and was not impressed with the greasy offering we received. Not to give a dog a bad name we thought we would try again. The chips were very nice but I have to say the fish was not fresh and the batter would have served better as the sole of some hob nail boots. We won't to going back.

We had fish and chip supper here on our last night before a return to Oxford. Fish and chips were to an excellent standard. Not greasy and cooked to perfection. Thoroughly recommended. I had cod and partner had plaice, both excellent. Chips could be exchanged for a jacket potato but not necessary on this occasion.

Went here as was so hungry and managed to park, ate inside, haddock in breadcrumbs, well my partner described it as armour plated fish, i had cod, lots of batter once i removed the batter the fish was very small, none of the staff spoke one word to us, £15+ for two lots of fish chips and peas, i expected more, chips were nice although i seemed to have all the little bits, my partner gave ne some of his, the place was nice and clean but couldnt help feeling ripped off, i should have realised when there were no other people in the resturant, would not visit again. Sorry, but if just one of the staff had acknowledged us we could have pointed out the fish,batter issue. But did not appear interested in the only two customers they had

Fish & chips after walking Offa's Dyke path went down very well. Ate them outside in the dark on the next-door pub's outdoor tables! There is a restaurant within the chip shop but that section had closed as it was quite late - hence eating outside.

De Monnow bridge fish bar is gelegen op een fraaie locatie naast de brug over de rivier Monnow. Bij ons bezoek was het er erg druk, maar de bediening was attent. De vis had wat minder deeg mogen krijgen, maar het eten was er verder gewoon prima. Gewoon een fish bar zoals die hoort te zijn.

Fed family of four for £9.35 sat by the river. Cod bites are lovely and convenient when sitting on a rock eating your lunch!

I've had very successful takeaways, but one day decided to eat in. It's very basic but more than adequate, the staff were great + coped well with our three children. I'm happy to go there anytime - but I wish they would wrap the takeaways in paper + not those awful polystyrene cartons.

Despite asking people in town if they think this place was worth eating from and them saying no go to either of the other two chip shops in town. However I stupidly decided to make my own opinion and purchase a small portion of chips with gravy. The chips tasted as if they had been cooked in cheap oil, and I asked for gravy opened it up and couldn't see it, I thought they had just put extra vinegar only to discover there wasn't any vinegar or salt as I had asked just a watered down gravy that was barely even on there. The service is appalling as if I was a piece of dirt , not welcoming and really stuck up. Will never recommend not return again! Only acceptable if you have no sense of taste!
