Miller & Carter - Thornhill in Cardiff

Was booked in for 1pm for my birthday, waited for my son to arrive so ordered starters for hubby & myself, son arrived to order mains, was advised that table needed to be vacated by 2.45pm and wouldn’t be able to order desserts!!! Had I have known that the table was only available for this short time then I would not have booked and gone elsewhere. I wanted a chilled birthday celebration and not to be rushed! Would have been helpful to be notified of short period of time before booking. Previously (busy or not) we have never had this happen at the Hayes restaurant. So disappointed and spoiled my birthday.

Had a lovely lunch this afternoon at miller and carter. Lovely food and staff and a lovely overall experience.

Include the steak meal in two course offer

I’ve been here lots of times over the years and it can be a little bit and miss. Tonight was great, the food was perfect, good potions and hot with fantastic quality steak. We were served by Meg who was very friendly and polite and deserves to be mentioned.

Had to wait 15 minutes for our booking, cold starters, long time to wait between courses. Food was nice, but were clearly short staffed (our waitress was trying her best) and if that’s the case you shouldn’t allow that many bookings. Has put us off returning, which is a shame as the food is nice.

DONT GO HERE THE SERVICE IS SHOCKING!!! Ordered a collection for 7:30 I was left stood up in the bar area for 55 minuets there is a lot of other people complaining about the service here it is very slow and poor don’t waste your money!!!

Had a lovely evening at M&C with family. Booked for 7pm and was very busy. Short wait in the bar before table was ready. Obviously had steak, ribeye, sirloin were delicious and cooked perfectly. Sides, Kids meal and desserts were good too. Service from Luke was excellent, friendly and helpful. Had a great meal.

Great Xmas meal with the boyos! Top nosh! Beef dripping gravy and the Sticky chipotle chicken are an absolute must!!!! Picture is of the 16oz Ribeye with greens, bone-apple-feet!

Awkward moment regarding availability of menu and over charging at the end of the evening

Our table was booked for 730pm, and we ordered around 750pm then waited hour and ten mins for our food. I was told it was because we ordered a well done steak, as a chef that takes no more that 15 mins to cook. Out steaks came but we had to ask for our salad and the steak knifes came after the salad and we were 3/4 though our meal. Miller and carter is amazing food and service in Cardiff but this one, even though so much closer to home , I will never visit again !

The food was stunning. After ordering we waited an hour for our food. When we received our steaks, I had to ask for our side salads. Also, our steak knives were delivered when we had nearly finished the meal.

Went there new years eve starters came out mine was luke warm my wife starter was stone cold so it went back waited one and a half hours for main 2 steaks came 9 oz rumps they were about 9mm thick again both were luke warm so were the chips my wife had boiled potatoes they were a load of mush in a bowl so we left had nothing to eat what a waste of an evening been looking forward to it aswell

The restaurant was beautifully decorated, quiet whilst being very busy, service was excellent despite the restaurant being full.

Out of all the Miller and Carters I've been to, this is the best in Cardiff

Incredible! Food and service were outstanding.

Updating post xmas dinner food down from 5 to 1 spent over £200 for two meals. Xmas day. Apple tart if we hadn't read the menu wouldn't have known the flavourless slices were even apple. Two turkey dinners inconsistent pieces of turkey totally different amounts could taste the advertised cauliflower cheese on one piece of cauliflower. Starters soup for wifeasteless and the hog thing no flavour never again !!!!

My wife and I are a big fan of miller & carter and have been many many times over the years. We’ve just visited tonight in Thornhill and a simple request to swap the onion loaf for a few mushrooms isn’t a big ask. The waitress “who was lovely” said it was no problem but then later come back 15mins later to say the chef refused this request so she was very sorry. It wasn’t her fault and she felt really awkward because she agreed wasn’t a big ask as the chef was being really rude. We told her it wasn’t her fault and not to worry. I ordered the 16oz Rib Eye that was cooked really nice and was lovely, but my wife’s 9oz rump was over cooked and tough and was not worth the money at all. We didn’t want to complain as my wife felt bad for the waitress and we don’t like to complain normally but tonight has really annoyed us. We spent £80 odd and not to give a few mushrooms isn’t the best service especially when it’s a swap for a onion loaf and then for my wife’s steak to not be medium but well done was not good either. Overall wasn’t the best of meal for my wife and she actually said it t was really poor. We’ve don’t get out very often due to children etc but that definitely put a damper on the evening. Like I say not one to complain but the chef needs to thank the waitress for us not returning a terrible cooked steak that was a really poor cut also.

I went with some old school friends (old being the word - moany old gits 🤣) and we got a last minute table as our primary venue was closed for food unexpectedly. You have to book online they say but I'm nearly certain I saw someone walk in and get a table. Anyway, the place was two thirds full, we got a decent table and service was adequate. The others had steaks and they all enjoyed them (although it was agreed the lettuce wedges are getting smaller and smaller), and I had the Asian cauliflower wings and the veggie pithivier - think pie with a load of cheese in it. They were both really good! For four people it came to £160 with at least one drink each, plus one pudding for Mr "Let's split four ways, yeah?". You can always count on M&C for a better than gastro pub steak dinner, and I've had fish before now which was also great. A decent venue in south Wales now, and glad we didn't have to head into the City proper!

Went here as a party of 5 for a Christmas get together. Staff are amazing, friendly and relaxed. Dress code a bit austere but I guess that's just part of their appeal to some. Steak mains are amazing as are chicken main courses. Starters are another story... Prawn cocktail is not anything close to decent. Clearly thawed (once frozen) prawns with no sauce and just lettuce leaves. 2 other starters were just acceptable and clearly frozen/reheated style of food. Deserts were also quite average with banoffee being quite bad as was the fudge brownie/cake type desert. Lemon tart was the only acceptable one and the raspberry sorbet was lovely. Overall a very expensive meal when only the main courses were of a decent standard.

The food was absolutely fantastic, and I want to give a special shoutout to Luke, our waiter. Despite being incredibly busy with a full house of customers, he remained friendly, attentive, and brought a calm, welcoming presence to the table. His excellent service truly enhanced our dining experience!

Too busy to care. The server did not introduce herself as they used to. She did not understand some drinks names, so said it was not served. She also did not understand “Pink, with no blood” as there was no button for this on the iPad. I purchased the drinks we wanted directly from the bar. The chips were cold, and the steak was delivered well done. They were way too quick to just refund food. No question of changing it, no apology, just “we’ve removed it from the bill”. Beware, if there is no button for it on the iPad, it’s either unavailable, or you just take your chance. It’s so disappointing, it didn’t used to be like this.

Restaurant looked beautiful. Very atmospheric/Christmas theme. Was a special family occasion and took a chance on M&C as we haven't experienced good food there in a while. . But the food was really poor. Ordered a ribeye, medium as would suit the cut. It arrived very rare and took five minutes before I could get the attention of waiting staff to ask for it to be cooked to medium. Waited over ten minutes for its return, by which time my family had almost finished. It was still rare, although tough to the point I couldn't cut it easily with a steak knife, and it bled into the rest of the food. Not the first time we've had poor food here, but will be the last. Certainly not helped by the manager (?) busy messaging on his phone when I was trying to get his attention. Then continued to message/read a message as I was speaking to him asking for the steak to be cooked medium. The person serving, however, was attentive and did her best. Disappointed yet again. May expect a poor steak from a pub, but if this is a steak restaurant with reasonably high prices, then the steaks should be good.

The staff were incredibly helpful to our 8-person group despite us having lots of different requirements and things which cropped up - they made our night really memorable and the steaks were unreal!

Our table of two was booked at 1.30pm we waited nearly an hour for our starters which were warm but not hot. Then we waited a further 40 mins for our mains. We asked on two occasions where our food was as we had to leave at 3.10pm to collect our daughter from school. Our mains arrived at our table at 3pm so we literally had to eat it very quickly which wasn’t ideal. It was lucky the food was cold because if it had been hot we wouldn’t have been able to eat it so fast. When the waitress brought our mains out we still had our starter dishes on the table. We had to ask for steak knives and if we had more time we would have sent the food back as it was cold. Our original plan was to have the 3 course lunch menu but had to have the 2 course instead it wasn’t classed as lunch the time we were eating more like early evening dinner.

Food was good, I had a cobweb next to my table (71) by the mirror. Not very good, and gents toilet should be checked more ofter as lots of pee on the floor!

I’ve ordered takeaway from here three times, twice (including tonight) they didn’t send the dessert, and the other time the dessert was all I ordered, so they couldn’t miss it. Tonight I ordered the squash salad - what I received was a third of the portion shown on the picture, no hummus, about a teaspoon of couscous, and the squash was extremely stringy. First photo is theirs, second is what I received. Not sure why I ordered again, as I should have known this would be a huge disappointment once more. No doubt they will try to blame Uber Eats, but I’ve never had an issue with any other place I order from, and delivery can’t be blamed for the poor quality/quantity of the food I did get. As I didn’t receive the rest of my order, this tiny piece of squash cost me £36. It’s quite a clever move by the restaurant - they can’t serve tiny portions and miss off items to people that eat in, so they do so for takeaways, where there is no recourse for the customer. It must save them quite a bit of money. Update: Response received from the restaurant as seen below, saying they ‘regret that you had a negative experience’, no apology. No action taken for what was two negative experiences, not one, as stated in review. No specifics as to how they will ‘use this as an opportunity to improve.’ Corporate speak with nothing behind it.

Came in for food tonight and despite it being busy we received amazing service from Kacie. She was brilliant and made sure everything was okay and nothing was too much for her. She gave us recommendations for starters and sides and made sure we knew how the best way to have our steak cooked was. She was brilliant. Food and service 10/10!!

My partner and I had a wonderful evening at Miller & Carter. The food was delicious, though a bit overcooked initially. However, when we mentioned it to our server, Tracey, she took care of it right away without any hesitation. She was so friendly and attentive, and the replacement dish was cooked to perfection.

The staff were lovely, the food was great, and the good attention to gluten free dietary requirements made me feel confident eating there.

We came on the recommendation of a friend and are so glad that we did. We were celebrating a birthday and the birthday girl thoroughly enjoyed her halloumi fries and 12oz steak. All of us found the food delicious, the service excellent and the whole experience was a relaxed evening out. One important point to note is the extra care given to one of our party who is coeliac. Evan, who looked after us, was attentive and knowledgeable about the condition, and we were confident that the food being served to him would be safe. You really don't get this level of care and attention everywhere. Many thanks. We'll be back soon.

Wonderful food at Thornhill with family. We did have to move tables because we were getting blasted by the air con and I was freezing, but the lady was happy for us to move so thank you! We will be back. We have also previously been here for just drinks on the patio with our dog which they were more than happy to accommodate 😊

We popped into Miller and Carter Thornhill recently for an evening meal and it has to be said we all enjoyed ourselves. The staff were, as always, friendly and welcoming. Before our meal we had a drink at the bar. I particularly enjoyed the choice of draught beer and lager. Very impressive. For food we ordered 2 rump steaks and a starter as one of us doesn't eat meat. The steaks went down well as did the lettuce side. The only slight downside appears to be less fish on the menu. Yes this a steak house but I'm sure there used to be salmon, fish in batter on the menu. Our server, Meg, did a good job throughout our visit.

18 of my family plus two infants were celebrating 3 major birthdays and we decided on a Saturday set menu. My point of contact was David the duty manager who was at all times approachable ,gregarious and unflappable he assured me that we would be well catered for and they are more than used to larger parties. He was true to his word as the day ran very smooth with absolutely no problems.. David was a hands on manager greeting, behind the bar and clearing the tables he obviously leads by example as we hit the jackpot with the two servers we had. Haydn very gregarious top of his game ,nothing was to much trouble and he helped to turn the day from a memorable one to a magical one. Rachel softly spoken was exemplary she was generous with her time ,advice and laughs. David ,Hadyn, Rachel should have a template made as they are the epitome of customer service. big shout out to the chef as the cuisine was top class with such a variety of meals they came out spot on the steaks superb the starters and desserts were exquisite .They were all a credit to the Millers and Carter brand. like my headline reads 5* service 5* cuisine 5* staff

A little bit of a wait of 20-25 mins initially for drinks, but from what I could make out there seemed to be some staffing issues which is the only reason I’m unable to give 5* for service. Order taken by Evan who was very polite and extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Opted for the Sunday sharer which is relatively new to the menu, which was absolutely outstanding and cooked to perfection by grill chef Alex. Have visited all of the restaurants within a reasonable driving range and Thornhill is by far the best.

Had a great night here tonight. Great atmosphere brilliant service from our sever rhiannon. My only gripe was that we skipped starters and just had mains and it took just over an hour to come. Understand that it was a full restaurant just felt a little long. Still would recover as its always a good night here

Worse steak ever I wanted mediam rare I got well done

Unfortunately food not up to usual standard. It was luke warm, had fries and sauce replaced. Onion loaf was soggy, disappointing. Staff attentive, very busy so service a little slow.

My husband and I come to this Miller and Carter frequently and always have a lovely meal. As I’m coeliac I find my options limited but as M&C are accredited by the Coeliac Society there’s always piece of mind that I can enjoy my meal without fear of being unwell. We attended recently to celebrate an anniversary and were looked after by Tracy. She went above and beyond the entire night. She was friendly, very reassuring when it came to discussing my food preparation and made a superb wine recommendation, she really made the evening. We also treated ourselves to a butchers block for the first time, each steak was cooked beautifully and it arrived piping hot. This visit was the best steak and overall experience we’ve ever had at M&C, and we’re looking forward to the next!
